Jagtar Singh Hawara, a convict in former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh’s assassination, will be produced in court through video conferencing (VC) on Thursday in an 18-year-old terror-related case. On July 28, the Mohali district court had ordered that Hawara be produced in court in person but on August 9, the court allowed the police application to produce him through video conferencing.
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Krishan Kumar Singla said in its order that the police application mentioned that Hawara was a high-risk prisoner and it was not possible to produce him physically in court.
The order also mentioned that the court had received a letter on August 8 from the additional superintendent of Central Jail No. 15 in Mandoli, Delhi. “In that letter, it finds mention that wireless message was sent to DCP DAP [Delhi Armed Police] 3rd Btn. (Battalion) Vikaspuri, Delhi to provide adequate escort guard to produce the accused physically before this court but due to Independence Day, a DD entry is received from DCP DAP 3rd BN regarding non availability of DAP guard,” the court order stated.
“In view of this, when the request has already sent by additional superintendent Central Jail as to that it is not possible to produce the accused in court and he will be produced through VC then it is quite obvious that on August 10, accused will be produced through VC only,” the order added.
Hawara, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi, was booked in 2005 under sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosives Act and sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act at Kharar police station.
