A 70-year-old woman was killed while her husband was left injured after three unidentified men barged into their house and tied them up early on Sunday.
The Tardeo police have registered a case of murder and robbery as some valuables and gold ornaments were stolen from their house.
According to the police, the deceased woman, identified as Surekha Agarwal, stayed with her 75-year-old husband Madan Mohan Agarwal in the third-floor apartment of Yusuf Manzil in Tardeo.
The police said that Madan had earlier worked as an imitation jeweller.
At around 6am on Sunday, the police said that three unknown persons wearing masks barged into their 3BHK apartment.
An officer said, “Madan went for his morning walk around that time and as soon as he opened the door and stepped out, three men held him and pushed him back inside his house. The accused tied his hands and legs with a brown cello tape and even taped his mouth.”
The trio subsequently found Surekha sleeping in the bedroom and tied her hands, legs and mouth as well.
The police said that the three accused took away the gold ornaments that the couple was wearing following which they stole other valuables and jewelleries from their apartment and escaped from the house.
“The incident lasted more than an hour and after they left, Madan, whose hands and legs were tied, crawled towards the door and opened it. The tape on his mouth had come down a bit due to which he managed to raise an alarm for help,” said an officer.
One of the neighbours in the building heard his cry for help after which they went to the house and untied him.
Mohan and the neighbour found that his wife had fallen unconscious in the bedroom due to which Tardeo police were informed and the woman was rushed to the hospital. She was declared dead during treatment.
An officer said, “We suspect that she died due to suffocation as we have not found any assault injuries on them while Madan has also confirmed that the three intruders did not beat them.”
The investigators further added that they are scrutinising the CCTV footage of the building premises while teams are also checking cameras installed in the nearby shops and localities.
“We believe that the three accused have done a recce of the senior citizen before targeting them early on Sunday as they were well aware of the time Madan leaves for a walk every morning,” said an officer.
Different teams of crime branch along with Tardeo police station are conducting a probe and are trying to trace the culprits.
