Manchester United have completed the sale of Mason Greenwood to Ligue 1 side Marseille, but the deal includes a clause that keeps the door open for his potential return.

The Telegraph reports that Manchester United have negotiated a £30 million transfer fee with Marseille for the controversial striker, and crucially, have included a buy-back option in the agreement.

He was one of the most promising talents to come out of the United academy but soon after breaking into the first-team, he was involved in an off-the-pitch controversy.

He was accused of assaulting and attempted rape by his girlfriend. He was suspended by the club until the investigation went on. However, the charges were later dropped.

United tried to reintegrate him into the team but backtracked on their decision after backlash from their own fans and he was soon loaned out to Getafe.

Despite a lot of criticsm, the Spanish side backed the player, who delivered on the pitch, contributing with 10 goals.

The Telegraph’s report notes the peculiar nature of including a buy-back clause in Greenwood’s deal, given Manchester United’s previous stance on the player. This clause suggests that the club is not entirely closing the door on a future return for Greenwood.

Mason Greenwood’s talent remains unquestionable

Despite the off-field controversies, Greenwood’s talent remains evident. At just 22 years old, he has already accumulated 185 senior appearances for Manchester United and Getafe, with 45 goals and 18 assists to his name.

His impressive youth record includes 34 goals in 34 appearances for the United U18s and 5 goals with 2 assists in 8 games for the U21s. (Transfermarkt)

Mason Greenwood’s story with Man United is soon to be over, with another chapter in his career about to be written at Ligue Un giants, Marseille.

After a brilliant season on loan at Getafe in 2023/24, there had been speculation as to where the youngster would end up next.

As CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, noted on his official X account, Greenwood landed in Marseille overnight, and he was welcomed by a crowd letting off flares and chanting his name.

Mason Greenwood’s exit from Man United is getting closer as the controversial footballer has accepted an offer from Marseille to move to France ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

A deal was agreed between the clubs last week with the package for Greenwood being worth €31.6m (£26.7m), comprising of a €27.6m (£23.3m) fixed fee and €4m (£3.4m) in add-ons, plus a large share of any future sale.

However, Marseille needed to agree terms with the player and according to The Athletic, that has now been achieved as Greenwood has accepted the Ligue 1 side’s contract.

The 22-year-old must still travel to France before any transfer is announced as the Man United star still needs to undergo a medical and put pen to paper on his contract.

Marseille have beaten a whole host of interested clubs to the forward this summer as the report states that Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Napoli have all tracked the Englishman at one point.

It remains to be seen how this transfer will go down in France given the player’s past but on the field, the Ligue 1 giants are getting a top talent.

The sale of Mason Greenwood is huge for Man United

Greenwood’s transfer is a big one for Man United as the Premier League giants are finally getting the controversial footballer off of their books. The 22-year-old has not represented United since he was arrested in January 2022 and has been available for transfer since last August.

The £26.7m fee will help the Manchester club bring in new faces during the current transfer market as Erik ten Hag looks to build a competitive team ahead of the new campaign.

Man United will be disappointed to be leaving a talent as good as Greenwood go for so little but given his recent history, it was an easy decision for the Premier League outfit to make.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte is reportedly keen to strengthen his attack with the transfers of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Italian tactician has only recently taken over at Napoli, having previously worked with Lukaku at Inter Milan, and it could be that we’ll now see the pair cross paths again this summer.

According to Todo Fichajes, Conte’s dream is to have both Lukaku and Greenwood up front together at his new club, though of course it remains to be seen how realistic an idea this is.

Napoli might feel they will be able to cash in on star striker Victor Osimhen soon, and that would then give them potentially a lot to spend on new signings up front.

Greenwood and Lukaku are two players likely to be available this summer, for different reasons, so it will be intriguing to see if we do end up getting a look at this partnership.

Romelu Lukaku to Napoli?

Why Greenwood and Lukaku transfers make sense for Napoli

Greenwood is surely out of the first-team picture at Man Utd now after being arrested and then suspended by the club in 2022, while he spent last season out on loan at La Liga side Getafe.

It’s hard to imagine the Red Devils being prepared to deal with the kind of backlash they could get if they gave him another chance in their first-team, so a sale makes sense for them, also partly because it could represent significant profit on a homegrown player.

Mason Greenwood to Napoli?

Lukaku, meanwhile, has flopped at Chelsea and it makes sense that they want to offload him now after loan spells at Inter and Roma.

The Belgium international has played well under Conte in the past, so it could be good business for Napoli to deliver this as one of their main signings for their new manager this summer.

Calm situation for sought-after Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi has been excellent for England during the Euros and many clubs have been scouting him this season, but at the moment nothing is concrete yet.

For example, around March Liverpool asked about his situation but didn’t follow up with proposals or negotiations.

I can guarantee that as of today, it remains a calm situation to be discussed later in the window.

Nothing decided yet for Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk is going to enjoy some down time before making a decision on his career
Virgil van Dijk is going to enjoy some down time before making a decision on his career

There’s nothing at all in Virgil van Dijk’s answer on his future, he was just being honest in a post-match interview after an intense game by saying that he will discuss his future after the holidays.

He has not discussed or decided anything now, he was only focused on the Euros, and this is the situation as of today.

Conversations ongoing for Dani Olmo

Dani Olmo's future could be decided next week
Dani Olmo’s future could be decided next week

Dani Olmo’s release clause is now valid until July 20.

I’m not aware of contacts with Chelsea at the moment despite links, but let’s see with other clubs.

His agents are having conversations but there’s still nothing close or imminent as of now… and nothing before next week.

Olmo has no preference, just waiting to see which proposals will arrive.

Cucurella is happy at Chelsea… but will consider his options

I don’t think that it was a big statement that Marc Cucurella’s agent made recently, he simply confirmed that Cucurella wants to stay at Chelsea and he’s happy at the club.

But, in case the club decide to sell him, Cucurella would consider his options.

It’s really quiet now, there are no talks, though clubs appeared at the end of the summer one year ago for example.

Chelsea are happy with Cucurella but with big proposals, everything could be open for Cucurella or… Ben Chilwell.

Thiago’s return to Barcelona will be clarified shortly

Hansi Flick wants Thiago as a member of his staff at Barcelona
Hansi Flick wants Thiago as a member of his staff at Barcelona

I can confirm that there are discussions between Thiago Alcântara and Hansi Flick personally over Thiago’s potential appointment to help Flick at Barcelona as part of his staff.

Those discussions are still ongoing,

Thiago is tempted and Flick really considers him as a fantastic factor to help. Final outcome will be clear soon.

Juve want Todibo but it’s not going to be easy

It’s true that Jean-Clair Todibo is interested in the Juventus project yes, but OGC Nice want around €45m and Juve have only discussed a loan with buy clause.

That’s not something easy for Nice to accept at this stage.

Nice rejected €35m from West Ham, but for Juventus to sign him it will also depend on outgoings like Hujisen, who could leave the club.

Zirkzee ‘Here we go’ to Man United, de Ligt soon

Joshua Zirkzee will put pen to paper on a deal with Man United soon
Joshua Zirkzee will put pen to paper on a deal with Man United soon

Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna to Manchester United is a ‘here we go!’

An important and exclusive detail on this story is that my understanding is that Manchester United won’t pay the release clause for Joshua Zirkzee.

So what’s the agreement? Instead of paying €40m to Bologna in one solution, Manchester United have agreed on paying slightly above the release clause, but with better payment terms.

The fee will be paid over three years and the player has already agreed a five-year deal, with the option for another season.

It’s the first signing of the summer for Manchester United, and the first signing of the new era with INEOS.

Medical tests are expected before the holidays and then the deal will be officially done.

A really important update on a really important story, guys.

It’s also important to tell you something else on Manchester United. They are advancing in negotiations with Bayern for Matthijs de Ligt.

The expectation from Manchester United after Joshua Zirkzee is to get the Matthijs de Ligt deal done. The player has told his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, he only wanted to negotiate with Manchester United, so no negotiations ongoing with any other club.

The contract is already agreed until 2029, and the salary is ready, but the club to club agreement is still needed.

Marseille working hard to land Mason Greenwood

Olympique Marseille are insisting on making the Mason Greenwood deal happen. Lazio are waiting to see what happens and of course, if the deal collapses with Marseille, Lazio will still be there.

But Marseille remain confident. They have an agreement with Manchester United, €30m with add-ons included, and they are working to reach an agreement with the player.

So, despite the comments in the recent days about Mason Greenwood, the point remains very clear. Marseille want to sign the player on a permanent deal.

Man United are looking forward expectantly after the final piece of the puzzle in terms of the make up of the club’s board was put into place.

Dan Ashworth had taken an age to join the club but he can now move forward with his colleagues and first-team manager, Erik ten Hag, to help bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

Two players, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood, would, under normal circumstances, be crucial to United’s aspirations, but their well publicised issues have meant that a move away is a certainty.

How to buy tickets for England vs Spain

Certainly, Sir Jim Ratcliffe doesn’t appear to be in any mood to allow the slate to be wiped clean and the former England internationals given a second chance.

Stan Collymore believes that, in fact, United have let down both players as they look to resurrect their careers elsewhere.

“I think that both Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood were unfortunate to be at the madhouse over the past few years that is Manchester United,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“Sancho being dug out by the manager in particular isn’t helpful at all, and his form back at Dortmund proved that.

Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood at Man United.
Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood at Man United.

“In terms of Greenwood, it was and is a very serious situation. We all saw the videos, we all saw the pictures, and I’m a massive believer – I have to be because of my own mistakes in life – that you get an opportunity to learn and move forward, and Getafe allowed him to do that.

“There was very toxic way in which his situation was talked about amongst Manchester United fans, men and women. I doubt that there’s a way back for him there, and I think that makes it very difficult for him to come back to an English club too.”

Both players would also have been a shoo-in for the England national team at Euro 2024 if things had’ve been different, and Collymore doesn’t believe the international door is closed yet – at least not in Sancho’s case.

“For both of them to play abroad now is a is a good thing and I think they’ll get plenty of offers because of England being on the world stage at the moment after their win over the Netherlands. There’s a lot of positive connotations after that performance and result,” he added.

“They should go and enjoy a career outside of the English top flight, because yes, to a degree, Man United and English football has failed them.

“I wish them both very well because they’re both extremely talented players, and in a year’s time, if Sancho is doing what we know he can do, there’s nothing to say that by that point, the next England manager doesn’t look to bring him back into the fold.

“For Greenwood I think it’s more difficult because if he plays for England again, everybody – media, women’s groups and the general public – will say that he shouldn’t be.

“Despite me thinking that anybody should have the ability to redeem themselves, I don’t think there is a way back to international duty for Mason Greenwood.”

In his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, former Aston Villa attacker Stan Collymore discusses some of football’s biggest talking points, including why England are now a squad to be proud of, why Crystal Palace and West Ham are moving forward, and why Man United have let down Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood.

England finally have a squad and a manager to be proud of

I really enjoyed England’s performance against the Netherlands. It was a lot more assured, a lot more assertive, a lot more aggressive.

When the Dutch scored, there was always an element of ‘here we go again,’ but England got that slice of luck with the penalty. I’d be very disappointed if that was given against me as a player and I was very surprised that the referee’s original decision wasn’t upheld. Incredibly fortuitous.

After that I thought for pretty much the entirety of the match, 70 plus minutes, England were the better team.

It shows how far we’ve come that the expectation in this tournament to date hadn’t been met, and for an England team to dominate possession of the ball against the Dutch is quite remarkable – and that may not get commented on as much as it should.

It’s a massive vindication of the St George’s Park project, of English coaches and English coaching, and of the talent that we’re now producing.

England used to play the Dutch and you’d think to yourself ‘how are we going to get the ball back?’ and on Wednesday I watched an English team play a Dutch team where the Netherlands players were running around wondering when they were going to get the ball back. That could be a real watershed moment for English football in many ways.

I still think that Harry Kane is labouring a little bit, but the main positive is that we now know that another glass ceiling can be broken.

The captain of the national team can be taken off and there won’t be any sort of division amongst England fans because there are now players coming through – like Ollie Watkins – that can provide those golden moments. That’s massive. That’s absolutely massive.

Credit has to be given to Gareth Southgate because he said all the way through, judge him on results.

He’s obviously been wounded by some of the personal stuff, which I think is out of order. You can criticise somebody, and we have, rightly so, because of performances, without it being personal.

Guehi transfer won’t trouble Crystal Palace despite Olise switch

If Crystal Palace can bring in up to £100m in sales over the next two or three years, with a progressive coach and an academy that continues to produce good players, they’ll be very happy.

They’ll look at the situation and say that ideally they’d have liked to build like Brighton or other progressive clubs have, get some success and into Europe before having to start to shed our players.

But the reality is it doesn’t matter.

When you are seen as a mid-table ‘smaller’ club you are going to have other people look at your players, and to lose Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in the same window would be concerning.

However, they’ve got a state of the art training facility and still have plenty of very good players. I mean, we haven’t even mentioned Adam Wharton and I don’t think they’d let him go.

If Crystal Palace get some decent money in, Steve Parish can ask himself the question as to whether he has somebody that he would trust to spend it wisely, and in Oliver Glasner, yes, the manager has done very well so far. He looks like somebody that’s going to be there for the longer term.

So this isn’t Roy Hodgson that’s being given a war chest of £70m, they’ve got a young, vibrant manager with a very, very good style of play who, if you gave him the resources, will ensure Crystal Palace go from strength to strength.

West Ham finally moving towards big club status under Lopetegui

I think that we got it absolutely spot on in this column previously about West Ham having to make sure that Lopetegui’s ego, which is big, is assuaged and pandered to.

The fact that he wanted a player that he worked with at Wolves in Max Kilman, and West Ham got him straightaway, tells you that the club have effectively said ‘we’ll back you.’

So that’s a really positive sign and it’s one step forward and not two steps back, but another one forward for a change.

Like other clubs, they will get mentioned and linked with several players over the next few weeks, but I think that Lopetegui has his wish list, and they’ve got target number one.

The manager will already feel like he can walk into the office and start to put his plans for pre-season together, knowing that the West Ham board are going to put their money where their mouth is.

They did put in a lower bid for Kilman which was turned down, but the West Ham of old would’ve walked away. Not anymore.

They’ve got a very good, top 10 squad already, and on the back of the Euros if they want to tap into the whole ‘West Ham won the World Cup’ thing, they all of a sudden become a more attractive proposition for players.

Man United have let both Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood down

I think that both Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood were unfortunate to be at the madhouse over the past few years that is Manchester United.

Sancho being dug out by the manager in particular isn’t helpful at all, and his form back at Dortmund proved that.

In terms of Greenwood, it was and is a very serious situation. We all saw the videos, we all saw the pictures, and I’m a massive believer – I have to be because of my own mistakes in life – that you get an opportunity to learn and move forward, and Getafe allowed him to do that.

One in, one out up front for Manchester United

Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle with Marseille over the sale of Mason Greenwood. This was one of the main missions for Man United this summer, and now the agreement between the clubs is done, so we’re now just waiting for a full agreement with the player. Marseille already have the green light from Greenwood, who is tempted by the project and the club and working under Roberto de Zerbi, but we’re still waiting on the contracts.

It will now be time to finalise the salary and also there are specific bonuses wanted by Greenwood, so there are still some details to be discussed between the player and Marseille, but the agreement between the clubs is done. Greenwood will join for €31m with add-ons included as part of this package, and, an important detail, Man United will have a future sell-on clause worth almost 50%.

This is a big percentage, and it’s because Manchester United feel that after Marseille we could see Greenwood join another big club in Europe, so they want the opportunity to make more money from his future sale.

This money will be important for Man United to reinvest in some positions. One of those positions is the striker, and with Joshua Zirkzee everything is going to plan. The ‘here we go’ is coming, it’s just Manchester United deciding how to proceed – they could pay the release clause at Bologna, or pay slightly above it but then get better payment terms, allowing them to pay it over maybe three, four or five years.

For now, United are still discussing this point, as soon as they clarify this the deal will get done. So it’s just a matter of time, we can just wait for Man United to decide soon which way they want to follow. But it’s all agreed with Zirkzee for a five-year contract, valid until June 2029… he’s waiting for Man United. Let’s see what the clubs agree, but after the Euros it could be soon that we see Zirkzee become the first new signing of the INEOS era.

Leny Yoro bid accepted, but Man United still pursuing other centre-backs as well

Another big story from yesterday was Man United’s official bid for Leny Yoro, which was accepted by Lille. The club president Olivier Letang is now pushing for Yoro to join Man United, as that is now the best proposal they have on the table – it’s €50m plus add-ons that could take the deal up to €60m.

So, Man United are offering big money to Lille to anticipate all the other clubs, but now the decision is for Yoro. Lille hope he will decide to go Old Trafford, but Real Madrid are still there, they are still confident and feel they are in control. Why? Because Real Madrid have been very clear – the only way to close the deal is on their conditions, they will not over-pay for Yoro when he’s due to be out of contract next summer. Real Madrid are ready to wait to get the deal done on their terms, or to even close the deal on a free transfer next summer because they know Yoro will not sign a new deal, and that he wants to join Real Madrid.

Now it’s on Yoro and his decision – will he accept Man United or wait for Real Madrid? Real Madrid know that Yoro’s dream is to play for them, and also Man United won’t wait forever because they are also looking at other centre-backs and they don’t want this to be something that drags on throughout the summer. Man United wanted to try and show ambition, so it’s never a wasted effort or something negative, in my opinion. They tried to be ‘aggressive’ in a positive sense, trying to show their intentions…now it’s on Yoro.

As previously reported, Matthijs de Ligt is another of their defensive targets, and talks are ongoing with Bayern Munich. Man United are very confident as their agreement with the player is almost done, they’re working on the final details, but De Ligt wants to join Man United, so it’s now about finding an agreement with Bayern.

Jarrad Branthwaite is another defender United have been trying to sign, and they’ve now had two bids rejected by Everton. The second bid was £45m plus add-ons, but Everton said no and keep mentioning other recent expensive centre-backs like Harry Maguire, Wesley Fofana and Josko Gvardiol. Everton do not feel any pressure to sell Branthwaite, but United are still thinking of the player.

In midfield, talks are ongoing for Manuel Ugarte. Manchester United are keen on the Uruguay international, and he’s keen on the move as well. It depends on the clubs as Man United and PSG are in contact but not close to getting the deal done yet. Negotiations are needed, and it could take some days as PSG insist on there being other clubs also showing a concrete interest in Ugarte.

In other news…

Riccardo Calafiori – Negotiations are still ongoing between Arsenal and Bologna for Riccardo Calafiori. It’s not a done deal yet between clubs, only done on player side with a five-year contract agreed but still discussing the fee, deal structure, add-ons and more. We can just wait and see what happens between Arsenal and Bologna. Calafiori wants Arsenal and is waiting for Arsenal.

Mikel Merino – The Spain midfielder is on the list at Barcelona for sure, appreciated by the board; Arsenal have also been tracking him as he’s considered a good market opportunity with one year left on his contract, while Mikel Arteta also follows Real Sociedad regularly. Let’s see what happens, it’s still early for this one with all options open.

Jack Grealish – There have been some new rumours about Jack Grealish and his future at Manchester City possibly being in doubt. Still, I can honestly say I don’t have any concrete info on Grealish now. I’m not hearing anything new, decisions, bid or anything… it’s all quiet around him at Man City now. We will see.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sell Mason Greenwood to Marseille.

Charged with criminal offences in 2022, although later cleared, Greenwood, 22, has failed to feature for United since.

Shipped out on loan to Getafe last season, the English forward enjoyed a decent career rival after scoring 10 goals in 36 games.

However, always unlikely to re-sign the disgraced striker on a permanent deal, Getafe were forced to withdraw from the running as last season’s star loanee returned to Carrington.

And after holding talks with the club’s senior officials, Greenwood is now close to understanding his next move.

Man United include rare clause in Mason Greenwood transfer

The Red Devils, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, are about to finalise a deal that will see the 22-year-old join Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille.

And interestingly, although Greenwood’s move has yet to be officially confirmed, the deal’s finer details are already emerging.

In addition to the £23 million fee and a huge 50 per cent sell-on clause, Journalist Ben Jacobs claims United have retained the option to purchase an even higher sell-on percentage further down the line — clever negotiating by minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe and new sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Although Greenwood’s future continues to divide opinions, one thing fans will agree on is the smart business their club have done in what is the first significant sale under Ratcliffe.

Marseille fans have reportedly started an online protest movement against the potential transfer of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

It seems a large chunk of OM supporters are not at all happy about the potential signing of Greenwood from Man Utd as the deal now looks closer than ever, according to French outlet RMC Sport.

Greenwood was notably suspended by the Red Devils in early 2022 after very serious allegations made against him by his former partner, which led to him being arrested.

Those charges have since been dropped, but Greenwood is not expected to have a future at Old Trafford now, and spent last season on loan with La Liga club Getafe.

Marseille could be his next destination, but, perhaps unsurprisingly, there are a lot of their supporters who aren’t happy about this deal and are making it clear that the 22-year-old is not welcome.

It will be interesting to see if this affects the decision-making at the Ligue 1 club, as it’s easy to imagine there’ll be enough high-up figures who would rather not risk the backlash they could get for going through with this controversial deal.

Getafe were happy enough to do it, and Greenwood performed well for them, but it might perhaps be too risky to the brands of bigger clubs with more worldwide followings.
