Chelsea have announced the squad that will travel on their pre-season tour to the United States and there were some noticeable absences with Trevoh Chalobah and Alfie Gilchrist left off the list by Enzo Maresca.

Both players featured for the Blues last season as Mauricio Pochettino trusted the two defensive stars at points throughout the campaign.

Gilchrist featured in 11 Premier League matches after the 20-year-old was handed his senior debut by the Argentine coach when he came on as a substitute against Crystal Palace back in December. The 2023/24 season was an important one for the young defender and he is now expected to go on loan to gain further experience.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Englishman has received two loan proposals for the upcoming season from Preston and Sheffield United. The youngster will pick his favourite destination over the coming days and it is the reason he has not been taken on Chelsea’s pre-season tour.

Chalobah’s story is a lot different as his Chelsea exit has been written on the walls at Stamford Bridge for some time.

Trevoh Chalobah’s time at Chelsea is coming to an end

Chalobah has been told that he will be staying in London while the rest of the Chelsea squad travels to the United States as the Premier League club feel that they already have enough defensive options with Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo, states Fabrizio Romano.

The West London outfit will also take 18-year-old Josh Acheapong with them to America as Maresca wants to use this time to evaluate the young defender.

The report claims that Eddie Howe’s side needs to sell players to help with financial issues but they are not keen on letting the Swedish forward leave.

West Ham offered Chelsea homegrown transfer opportunity

West Ham have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, according to reports.

Chelsea are one of a number of clubs facing a battle to remain compliant with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Blues have already been active in raising funds for homegrown players — which is the most effective way to stay ahead of PSR restraints — selling defenders Ian Maatsen and Lewis Hall on big-money permanent deals to Aston Villa and Newcastle, respectively.

Chalobah is a product of the Chelsea youth system and after a series of loans away from the club, made his first-team breakthrough in 2021/22 with 30 appearances across all competitions.

Now 24, the centre-back — who can also play as a defensive midfielder — has taken his appearance tally for the two-time European Champions to 80. Last season, however, was a step back for Chalobah, who played just 13 times in the Premier League and 17 times across all competitions.

Chalobah the latest homegrown to leave Chelsea?

According to a report from the Times (via TBR Football), Chelsea are open to selling Chalobah this summer and have offered the defender to West Ham United, as well as Nottingham Forest.

West Ham have already been active in the market this summer, signing goalkeeper Wes Foderingham from Sheffield United and exciting Brazilian talent Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras.

The Hammers’ stance on Chalobah is unclear, but having already sold Thilo Kehrer this summer and with Angelo Ogbonna turning 36 last month, adding a defender would make sense for new boss Julen Lopetegui, who is preparing for his first campaign at the London Stadium.

Chelsea are weighing up whether to offer defender Trevoh Chalobah as part of a swap deal for Michael Olise according to reports.

The Blues have identified Olise as their main transfer target this summer and are pushing hard to sign the 22-year-old.

Chelsea almost signed the winger last summer when they activated his then £35m release clause, but the deal fell through with Palace unhappy at how Olise was approached.

Chelsea consider using Chalobah as part of Olise deal

Olise ended up signing a new contract with the Eagles which saw his release clause increase to in the region of £60m.

This hasn’t put Chelsea off and they have once again returned this summer to try and complete a deal for the Frenchman.

The Blues along with Newcastle and Bayern Munich have been given permission by Palace to speak to Olise’s representatives over a possible deal.

Chelsea are reportedly considering using Chalobah as part of a swap deal for Olise.

Olise’s release clause is thought to be complicated in it’s nature due to his former club Reading being owed part of it as well as Palace and the player himself.

One option for Chelsea could be to include a player as part of the deal and GIVEMESPORT report they are considering using Chalobah as a makeweight.

The report adds that Palace have identified Chalobah as a possible option, with Chelsea known to be open to moving him on this summer.

The Blues are reportedly leading the race for the Frenchman, but will be aware other club’s are in the race, and they will need to convince Olise Stamford Bridge is the best place for him despite a lack of Champions League football.

Olise is set to represent France at the Olympics and will no doubt want his future resolved before then, with staying at Selhurst Park for another season a possibility which can’t be ruled out, and Palace are believed to have offered him a new contract which would see his release clause become higher.

Chelsea still have some interest in Victor Osimhen and are working on the deal behind the scenes, sources close to the situation have informed CaughtOffside.

Although the Blues are yet to make a breakthrough on signing Osimhen from Napoli, it seems they haven’t given up on the Nigeria international just yet and are making slow progress on the potential deal.

Chelsea may also be boosted by the fact that Paris Saint-Germain have not made an offer for Osimhen yet, while it’s also not true that Arsenal consider him a priority, despite some speculation to the contrary, CaughtOffside understands.

Osimhen is understood to be keen on a move away from Napoli this summer, and the Serie A giants seem to be preparing for this eventuality as they have replacements in mind for the 25-year-old.

One possible advantage for Chelsea in the race for Osimhen is that Napoli are keen on signing Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for their star player.

The Belgium international has done well during loan spells at Inter Milan and Roma in the last couple of years, so it perhaps makes sense that Napoli are now keen on working on bringing him back to Italy again.

Other names on Napoli’s list are Artem Dovbyk and Santiago Gimenez, CaughtOffside understands, but Lukaku could be one to watch as Chelsea are keen to sell the 31-year-old.

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has responded to stories of Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah being wanted by Manchester United, admitting the player could leave Stamford Bridge once Tosin Adarabioyo’s move is completed.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column, Romano explained that Chalobah could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer, but without anything concrete yet with any particular club.

Man Utd could do with signing defenders this summer, with Raphael Varane leaving Old Trafford on a free, and Romano has admitted that the Red Devils are looking at several names like Goncalo Inacio and Jarrad Branthwaite.

It remains to be seen if Chalobah will end up being an option for them, but if he is available as Adarabioyo replaces him at Chelsea, then the 24-year-old could surely be a fine option for United to consider.

Chalobah transfer latest and Man United’s centre-back search

On Adarabioyo to Chelsea and how it impacts Chalobah’s future, Romano said: “Chelsea’s first signing of the summer is also nearly done, with everything verbally agreed for Tosin Adarabioyo to join as a free agent after deciding to leave Fulham. We’re just waiting now for medical tests and for contracts to be signed, and then Adarabioyo will be a new centre-back signing for Maresca at Chelsea.

“Chelsea could also still look for another centre-back, and it could depend on the future of Trevoh Chalobah.

“Although Chalobah has been linked by some outlets with Manchester United, I don’t have updates on specific clubs yet. Chalobah will be one to watch, but things might happen a bit later, with Chelsea wanting to complete the formal steps on the Adarabioyo deal first.”

On United’s potential defensive targets, he added: “United are also working on a right footed centre-back as a priority this summer – Jean-Clair Todibo, Jarrad Branthwaite and Gleison Bremer are on the list, but they also want one more centre-back – a left footed one.

“It’s not decided yet but it’s a possibility they are considering internally, and one player they have been scouting is Goncalo Inacio from Sporting Lisbon.

It was always expected that Chelsea would be busy during the summer transfer window, and one player in particular could be part of a transfer tug-of-war ahead of next season.

Trevoh Chalobah has long been out-of-favour at Stamford Bridge, and whilst it’s believed that he had turned down the chance to leave the club before now, with no realistic prospect of regular first-team football, the player is apparently and reluctantly willing to accept that his future is elsewhere.

West London neighbours, Fulham, are continuing negotiations with alternative names to replace Tosin Adarabioyo, and they are understood to have prioritised a loan move for Chelsea’s 24-year-old English defender, according to CaughtOffside sources close to the Blues.

However, the Cottagers may not get things all their own way as many clubs from the Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A are interested in taking Chalobah on a permanent deal, which will surely have more appeal to Chelsea given their widely-reported Financial Fair Play issues.

Although Manchester United are going after the transfer of 21-year-old English defender, Jarrad Branthwaite, they are still far away from any deal with Everton because of the finances involved.

Trevoh Chalobah is expected to leave Chelsea.

With Jonny Evans also likely to leave the club when his contract expires, the Red Devils will consider making a move for Chalobah.

West Ham United and Tottenham also shouldn’t be ruled out as both have been linked with a move for the Chelsea defender and can offer him the opportunity of joining an exciting project whilst staying in London.

CaughtOffside sources understand that Chelsea want €35m for Chalobah, and whilst the final fee may be less than that, it’s in the Blues best interests to get the player off the wage bill sooner rather than later.

No teams are likely to want to get involved in a bidding war for his services either, but that might just end up being the case because Chalobah is now, evidently, a player in demand.

Chalobah could be a smart option for Man Utd, and the Independent claim he’s now on their radar as it looks like Chelsea are under pressure to sell a homegrown player in order to keep in line with Financial Fair Play rules.

The 24-year-old has mostly been a solid and reliable performer at Stamford Bridge, though he’s had spells out of the side, so some United fans might well feel they could aim a bit higher than someone who hasn’t always been first choice for one of their rivals, who have been struggling in a similar way to them in recent years.
