With the Act that effectively gives the Delhi Lieutenant Governor more power than the elected government in matters of governance being notified, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is turning its focus on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2023, was notified by the Legislative Department of the Ministry of Law and Justice after the President’s assent.

The law bolsters the Centre’s control over the administration of Delhi through the Lieutenant Governor, giving the latter “sole discretion” to act in matters that fall out of the ambit of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. It also hands over the reins of the bureaucracy to the L-G.

According to sources, the AAP, with its hands tied in several matters in the Delhi government, is now planning to focus its energies on governance at the civic body.

“The new cleanliness drive is an example of that. While it may seem like a small thing, sanitation has been a persistent issue in the Capital fodelhir several years. With our leaders at the helm, we can make a difference on the ground and show people what we can do in areas that have been neglected for so long. While this does not mean that issues falling under the Delhi government will be neglected, it gives us an opportunity to continue working even with the hurdles,” an AAP official said.

Another official said that the plan to revamp municipal schools and hospitals is next in line. “It is a big project, but we have shown what we can do with the Delhi government schools. While work on improving the teaching-learning process is already underway, infrastructure upgradation will also start soon,” an AAP leader said.
