Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has left Tottenham to join Ligue 1 club Marseille in a loan move with an obligation to buy, as confirmed by the Premier League club.

According to Sky Sports, Hojbjerg, who made 184 appearances for Spurs, would first join the Ligue 1 team on loan with an obligation to buy for £17 million.

Although Atletico Madrid and Fulham had also expressed interest in Hojbjerg, it is said that the player was eager to work with Roberto De Zerbi, the new manager of Marseille.

After Ange Postecoglou signed Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, the midfielder’s position in the team became uncertain, which became the reason of his departure.

The talks progressed swiftly, and the 28-year-old will spend the forthcoming season in France as part of a loan move before his deal becomes permanent.

Hojbjerg had begun the last year of his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The midfielder was not in the plans of manager Postecoglou as he did not suit the playing style of the manager.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg Marseille Tottenham
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has officially left Tottenham to join Marseille.

Due to this reason, he was not given a starting role last season by Postecoglou and it became clear that he would be allowed to leave the club.

At Marseille, he is going to play with Mason Greenwood and they both could soon be joined by Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

Hojbjerg was a reliable presence in the Tottenham midfield but with the arrival of new midfielders like Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur, he lost his place in the team and fell down the pecking order.

Tottenham are going through a major overhaul of the squad

With the departures of Joe Rodon, Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele, Ivan Perisic, Japhet Tanganga, and Ryan Sessegnon, Hojbjerg is now the seventh player to leave the team.

The Spurs manager is overseeing changes at the club in terms of personnel and wants to sign players who fit his philosophy.

After losing out on a place in the Champions League, Postecoglou is preparing his squad to challenge for the top four positon again next season.

Tottenham have been busy in sorting out the futures of their academy players, with several going out on loan for further development. The latest to be sent out on loan is Matthew Craig.

The club has officially confirmed that Craig will join League One side Barnsley on a season-long loan for the 2024/25 campaign. Spurs announced the transfer on their officially confirmed, stating: “Matthew Craig has joined League One side Barnsley on loan for the 2024/25 season.”

Craig, a product of Tottenham’s academy, has made just one Premier League appearance, which came on the final day of the 2022/23 season against Leeds United.

Earlier this year, Craig was loaned to League Two side Doncaster Rovers for the remainder of the season, where he gained valuable experience and playing time.

He made 20 appearances, contributed a goal and two assists, and helped the team reach the playoffs.

Craig joined the Tottenham academy along with his brother at the age of 12. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 2021, committing to the club until 2023.

And last July, Spurs extended his contract, ensuring that he remains with the club until 2026.

Craig has also captain the club’s U21 side and is highly rated for his leadership qualities as well.

The club will hope that the loan move helps the player gain valuable experience that helps aid his development as a player.

Matthew Craig is not the only midfielder Tottenham have agreed a loan deal for. Not long after confirming Craig’s move to Barnsley, they also announced that they have agreed a deal with French side Marseille for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The deal is an initial loan move with an obligation to buy for €20 million next summer.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is on the verge of completing a move to French side Marseille.

The news broke last night that Tottenham have come to an agreement with the Ligue 1 club regarding a fee for the Danish midfielder. Journalist Santi Aouna reported that a fee has been agreed upon and that the player will make the move in the coming days.

Romano reveals why Tottenham made the decision on Hojbjerg

Fabrizio Romano has now shared the details of the deal and explained why Tottenham decided to sell the 28-year-old.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer expert confirmed the reports, stating that a fee of £14 million plus add-ons has been agreed between the two clubs.

New manager Roberto de Zerbi who took in charge of the club this summer has been in contact with the player and that Hojbjerg is expected to accept the deal as well.

Romano further revealed that the move happened because Hojbjerg has only one year left on his current contract at Tottenham and did not plan on extending his deal. This prompted the club to sell him now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.

He said:

“Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is joining Marseille from Tottenham Hotspur, it is a ‘here we go’.”

“It is a huge signing and he will complete for a fee of around £14m plus add-ons. Hojbjerg has said yes and so we wait for the contract to be signed the formal steps but the agreement is done, it’s a massive one for Longoria and Robert de Zerbi, who has been in contact in recent days to agree on terms.

“Hojbjerg is ready to accept and why did Tottenham accept? Because he had one year left on his contract and he was not going to renew so Tottenham preferred to sell now instead of losing him on a free next summer.”

Hojbjerg was outstanding for Denmark in the Euro 2024

Selling Hojbjerg is the best decision for all involved

Hojbjerg has been linked with a move away for the last two transfer windows. While he was a constant presence in the midfield since joining the club from Southampton, he lost his place in the starting XI under Ange Postecoglou last season.

A move will benefit all parties involved, as Spurs can use the transfer money to reinvest in the squad while Hojbjerg will be able to ensure regular playing time.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is all set to leave the club permanently.

The 28-year-old had fallen down the pecking order at the North London club since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou and he needed to leave the club in order to play regularly. It appears that French outfit Marseille are prepared to provide him with an exit route this summer.

According to journalist Santi Aouna, the two clubs have agreed on a deal for the midfielder and Tottenham will receive a fee of around €13.5 million. The transfer is expected to be completed in the coming days.

The Denmark international midfielder will look to get his career back on track with regular football at the Ligue 1 club.

Hojbjerg would improve Marseille

Hojbjerg has proven himself to be a reliable performer in the English top flight over the years and there is no doubt that he has the quality and technical attributes to succeed with Marseille as well.

He could prove to be a quality acquisition for them and he will add control, composure and defensive stability to the side. The 28-year-old is at the peak of his powers and he will look to make an instant impact at his new club. The Denmark international will look to get back to his best with regular first-team action in the upcoming season now.

The midfielder has been linked with a number of other European clubs this summer as well, but the French outfit have won the race for his signature. They will look to sort out an agreement on personal terms and close the deal quickly.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will look to invest the proceeds from his departure into a new signing. They need to bring in a quality central midfielder and it will be interesting to see if they can bring in the right additions.

Tottenham are open to offers for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer and Fulham are one Premier League club believed to be readying a move for the Denmark international.

Marco Silva is looking to bring in a new midfielder ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as his options at Craven Cottage are limited. The Portuguese coach currently has Tom Cairney, Harrison Reed, and Sasa Lukic to choose from following the departure of his main star Joao Palhinha.

The 29-year-old joined Bayern Munich as part of a deal worth €56m. The Bundesliga club had an interest in the Fulham star since last summer and having failed to secure his services back then, the German giants returned.

The London club originally wanted Man United’s Scott McTominay but they had a bid worth £17m rejected by the Manchester club, reports Football Insider.

As a result, Fulham have now turned their attention to Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with the Cottagers said to be readying a bid for the Danish midfielder.

Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg should jump at Fulham opportunity

Hojbjerg does not have a future at Tottenham as the North London club would ideally like to sell the midfielder before his contract expires in 2025.

The Danish star was not a major player for Ange Postecoglou last season starting in just nine of his 36 Premier League appearances as the Australian coach preferred Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr in his midfield two.

Spurs have now added Archie Gray to their ranks having signed the youngster from Leeds United during the current transfer window. This will reduce Hojbjerg’s minutes further and the 28-year-old should jump at the chance to play for Fulham.

Bigger clubs may arrive for the Tottenham star but Fulham is an exciting project under Silva’s leadership as the West London club played some beautiful football last season on the way to a 13th-place finish – which could have been higher.

It remains to be seen if the Cottagers submit an official proposal to Tottenham for the Denmark international, but Hojbjerg will certainly be at a new club come the end of the transfer window.

It’s all change at Tottenham Hotspur at the moment it seems, with Ange Postecoglou clearly keen to ensure that Spurs’ form at the back end of last season was just a blip.

For most of 2023/24, the North Londoners had been great to watch and were also getting results, however, they tailed off significantly towards the end of the campaign.

So much so that they dropped out of the Champions League places, handing Aston Villa the chance to compete in European football’s premier competition in 2024/25.

If there was any disappointment at the way in which last season finished, the manager can’t allow that to fester.

The last thing that Postecoglou needs in the dressing room is a feeling of ‘what might’ve been.’ He’s a forward thinking individual and will only want his players looking ahead rather than back.

Dortmund want Hojbjerg

Similarly, those players that haven’t really made a mark under his tutelage will be considered for sale, perhaps for no other reason than to ensure that dressing room equilibrium remains.

To that end, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will finally be allowed to move on, and Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg goes as far as to suggest that Borussia Dortmund are keen on taking the player if they can’t land Brighton and Hove Albion’s Pascal Gross.

It isn’t clear how much Spurs will ask for the 28-year-old, though the player himself will surely be keen to make the move, and that would arguably mean that the club might need to lower any demands in the first instance.

Getting Hojbjerg’s £100,000 per week wages off the books too (Capology), should give Postecoglou the opportunity to add to the signings that have already been made this summer and who will arguably improve what Spurs already have in situ.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is ready to quit the Premier League club and join Atletico Madrid amid interest from the La Liga club this summer.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who reports that the Danish star would like to move to Madrid ahead of the 2024/25 campaign having seen a move collapse last summer.

Hojbjerg enters the summer transfer window with one year remaining on his current Tottenham contract and is expected to leave the club over the coming months. The 28-year-old has been linked with a move away from Spurs for some time now due to his deal running down and his lack of game time in North London.

The Denmark international featured in 39 games for Tottenham this season, but the majority of them came from the bench, as the midfielder’s style of play does not match what Ange Postecoglou is trying to do at Spurs.

There have been several clubs linked to Hojbjerg in the build-up to the summer transfer window with FulhamJuventus and Napoli also showing interest in the former Southampton star over the past year.

What is the best move for Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer?

A move to Juventus would be the best option for Hojbjerg this summer and it could happen should they fail to land their top target in Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz.

Serie A is a very tactical league and its slower pace would suit the Danish star’s game. The Italian giants also have Champions League football to offer the 28-year-old, which is a big incentive to move to Turin ahead of the new season.

However, it remains to be seen what happens between Luiz and Juve as the Serie A giants will not be able to afford both midfielders.

After a disappointing end to their 2023/24 campaign, it was always going to follow that Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou, was going to change things around this summer.

Right up until the last few games of the season, the Lilywhites were in with a chance of making next season’s Champions League.

However, five losses from their last seven matches, per WhoScored, was enough to see them out of contention for the premier European football club tournament.

Tottenham could lose Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Atletico Madrid

In press conferences and interviews at the end of the season, the Australian’s ire was palpable, and so it’s no surprise that he is clearing out certain players ahead of the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

One player that almost left the club last summer was Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and it now appears that the Dane could finally be on his way out of North London.

Tottenham could sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Atletico Madrid
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg of Tottenham Hotspur

The Daily Mail are reporting that Juventus, Napoli and Fulham all have an interest in the player, however, Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid, appear to be the favourites to secure his services.

It was the Rojiblancos that came closest to signing him 12 months ago but a deal never managed to get over the line.

The Spanish top-flight side have seemingly kept tabs on the player since then and are now in a position to be able to land him.

Given that he never really featured as a regular under Postecoglou – WhoScored note just eight starts in 2023/24, it’s a move that makes sense for all parties, and leaves some room in club coffers for the Tottenham manager to utilise as he makes progress on bringing in a handful of new faces.

Whilst he’ll clearly want to see an improvement from last season, Postecoglou isn’t necessarily under pressure either from Daniel Levy or the Spurs board, given that he’s only just getting started with his project.

Jose Mourinho has informed Fenerbahce of his desire to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer.

The Portuguese manager, who returned to management with the Turkish side last week, is looking to bolster the squad and has identified Hojbjerg as a key target.

Mourinho submits details report on Hojbjerg

According to Turkish news outlet Yeni Malatya, Mourinho considers Hojbjerg to be an ideal player for Fenerbahce.

Mourinho has reportedly submitted an extensive report to the club hierarchy, detailing the Danish midfielder’s potential contributions and emphasising why he is the perfect player for the club to sign this summer.

The report adds that following Mourinho’s recommendation, Fenerbahce are now set to officially begin proceedings to secure Hojbjerg’s transfer.

The club aims to finalise a deal as soon as possible and will start by evaluating the player’s contract and fee before making a move.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Fenerbahce?

Reunion with Mourinho

Hojbjerg joined Spurs from Southampton in the summer of 2020 and quickly established himself as a consistent performer in the midfield.

Under Mourinho’s previous tenure at Tottenham, he was a pivotal player at the club, however, under Ange Postecoglou, Hojbjerg has seen his role reduced to that of a squad player, with most of his appearances last season coming from the bench.

With Hojbjerg entering the final year of his contract, which expires in June next year, Tottenham recognise the need to sell him this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.

The prospect of reuniting with Mourinho at Fenerbahce could be an attractive option for Hojbjerg, offering him the regular football he desires and the opportunity to play under a manager who values his abilities.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is among those who are set to leave the club this summer in search of more regular playing time.

Under manager Ange Postecoglou, Hojbjerg’s playing time was significantly reduced. Despite making 36 appearances in the Premier League, he started in only 21% of the games, with most of his contributions coming as a substitute.

This limited role has reignited his desire to seek more consistent playing opportunities elsewhere.

The Danish international has been linked with a move away since last summer, and was very close to leaving in January as well but in the end decided to stay at the club to help them out during their injury crisis.

Fenerbahce’s interest in Tottenham’s Hojbjerg

Turkish giants Fenerbahce have emerged as the latest club to register their interest in the 28-year-old midfielder.

The Istanbul-based club recently appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager, and Mourinho is eager to reunite with Hojbjerg, whom he previously managed at Tottenham.

Turkish journalist Omer Celikbasli reported on X that discussions are underway between Fenerbahce and Spurs regarding a potential deal for the defensive midfielder.

Mourinho, who made Hojbjerg a key player during his tenure at Tottenham, sees the Dane as a valuable addition to his new team.

However, the Turkish club are not the only ones interested in signing him. The player continues to be linked with a move to Italy and Spain as well, with several Serie A clubs as well as Atletico Madrid linked with moves for him.

Hojbjerg is entering the final year of his contract, which expires in June of next year. Tottenham recognises the need to sell him this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
