Liverpool manager Arne Slot is looking to make an attacking addition to his squad this summer.

The Reds are blessed with options upfront in the wide and the central positions but they could make a move for another player to help their frontline next season.

Slot has not made any signing so far this summer and with just less than a month left in the Premier League season to start, the Reds have to move quickly now in order to strengthen their squad.

According to reports, Liverpool have targeted an academy product from Arsenal as a possible first signing this summer under new manager Slot.

Donyell Malen, Dutch forward who played two years at Arsenal before joining PSV in his own country in 2017, is reportedly a target for Liverpool, according to BILD.

Malen had a respectable 2023–24 season, but since moving from PSV Eindhoven to Dortmund in the summer of 2021, he has had difficulty establishing himself.

The 25-year-old scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 38 games last season, which is a respectable return.

Borussia Dortmund attacker Donyell Malen to Liverpool?

His form for Dortmund has attracted the attention of Liverpool who could now make a move for the former Arsenal academy player.

It is unclear how and whether Malen will be used in the upcoming campaign by head coach Nuri Sahin.

It’s evident that the player has the ability to score goals and under the right environment, he can perform well.

Liverpool need a new attacking option this summer

The Reds are looking to add a wide attacker to their squad this summer and Malen fits the bill.

Before his transfer to Dortmund, he was linked with a move to the Reds but the Bundesliga club won the race to sign him.

The Reds have been linked to a number of a players so far this summer but at the moment, it seems like they are not close to making any new signing.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has started preparing for the new season.

The Reds manager has been given the difficult job to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

The Merseyside club have decided to add fresh faces to their squad this summer after losing some key members.

Following the expiry of their contracts, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Adrian left the club and now the Reds will have to replace them with new signings.

Slot is targeting a triple raid on Bundesliga to sign an attacker, midfielder and a defender this summer.

Liverpool are reportedly pursuing moves for Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen, right-back Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen, and midfielder Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich, according to German news agency Bild, via the Liverpool Echo.

All the three players were outstanding performers for their team in the 2023-24 season.

Frimpong was a crucial part of the title winning Bayer Leverkusen team under the leadership of Xabi Alonso.

Joshua Kimmich Liverpool Premier League
Joshua Kimmich can add a winning mentality to Liverpool.

Kimmich has been a key member of the Bayern Munich setup for a long time and his ability to play in the midfield and as a right-back is widely recognised and appreciated.

Malen was on the books of Arsenal in the past and a potential move back to the Premier League would see him get a proper chance to prove himself in England.

Liverpool need new additions in the summer transfer window

Making a move for all those three players would make sense for the Reds as they need additions in those positions.

Kimmich has entered the final year of his contract at Allianz Arena and Bayern Munich are willing to cash in on him, which would make signing him easier than the other two players.

The Reds have still not made a new signing so far this summer while Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United have actively made moves this summer.

With just one month left in the Premier League season to start, it is time to bring new players to the club to prepare them with the new manager and the current squad for a better start to the season.

The Netherlands are through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after defeating Romania 3-0 in Munich and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo had a big role to play in their success.

The Dutch are on the easy side of the draw and will be confident of going deep having overcome the Romanians in the Round of 16 as they now await the winner of Austria vs Turkey.

The Dutch took the lead after 20 minutes as Gakpo produced a wonderful strike to go level at the top of the Euro 2024 goalscoring chart.

The Netherlands pushed for a second and it looked like it would never come but it eventually did courtesy of a brilliant assist from the Liverpool man. Gakpo ran along the end line before cutting the ball back to Donyell Malen to finish which highlighted his strength and tenacity.

The Reds star put in a brilliant shift in Munich for the Dutch and his campaign in Germany bodes well for new Liverpool boss Arne Slot ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as it should fill the forward with a lot of confidence.

Netherlands star Donyell Malen is having a horror first half in the Dutch’s crucial Group D clash with Austria with the result being the difference between first and third.

Ronald Koeman’s side won their first game against Poland, before drawing against France on Friday. A defeat could see the Netherlands finish third in the group and that will result in a tough Round of 16 tie – which could potentially be England.

That is exactly how things are playing out in the early stages as Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen scored an own goal after just six minutes. The 25-year-old had the chance to redeem himself 16 minutes later as he went through one-on-one but the forward put his attempt wide.

It has been a difficult first half for Malen and he will need to shake it off if he is to help the Netherlands get an easier tie for the next round.

Manchester United reportedly have six transfer targets in mind for the summer, including some big names from the Premier League and the Bundesliga.

The Red Devils need to majorly revamp their squad after a difficult season, with Erik ten Hag’s future also looking likely to be the subject of some debate, while the club will likely have a long list of current players that they’d be prepared to sell.

According to the Daily Mirror, a long list of big names could leave Old Trafford this summer, while Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is one of their targets from the Premier League, along with Wolves duo Pedro Neto and Joao Gomes.

MUFC could also look to raid the German top flight for some star names, with the Mirror mentioning Bayer Leverkusen pair Jeremie Frimpong and Edmond Tapsoba as being on their radar, along with Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen.

Jarrad Branthwaite has been linked with Manchester United

Man Utd transfers – what can we expect from the Red Devils under INEOS?

United have made a lot of big mistakes in the transfer marker in recent years, with a lack of a coherent recruitment strategy seeing them splash the cash on a long list of flops since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.

Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Antony are just some of the big names who’ve failed to live up to their potential despite arriving for big fees, and the club will need to do better this year if they are to become serious top four contenders again.

Jeremie Frimpong is also on Man United’s radar this summer

Branthwaite, Neto and Gomes look like smart options to come in as they’ve already proven themselves in England, while Leverkusen duo Frimpong and Tapsoba could be fine options as well as they’ve tasted title success in the Bundesliga this term.

It will be interesting to see if INEOS and new key figures like Jason Wilcox can see United improve when it comes to major transfer decisions this summer.

Liverpool would be mad to consider selling Trent Alexander-Arnold, but his contract situation is a concern

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been linked with Real Madrid, with my fellow columnists on here, Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto providing some insight into the Spanish giants monitoring his contract situation at Liverpool.

I personally think it is highly unlikely that Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool this summer, but of course the longer his new contract remains unsigned, the more you start to wonder. He is due to enter his final year in June, and from the club’s perspective, that is not a situation you want to be in with regards to one of your star players.

I’m not surprised to see Real Madrid linked. They are a club that makes a habit of targeting the best players in the world, and Alexander-Arnold is certainly one of those. As far as I’m aware, it’s no more than a ‘watching with interest’ situation, as opposed to bids, offers etc, but certainly the sooner Liverpool get Alexander-Arnold tied down to a new deal, the sooner those stories can be put to bed.

He’s such an important player for the Reds, and a symbol of Liverpool as a club too. He is, like Steven Gerrard previously, the home-grown star who represents both the city and the club. He’s the vice-captain, and primed to take over from Virgil van Dijk as skipper one day, and on top of that, he’s a world-class performer who makes a huge difference to the team. At 25, Liverpool would be mad to consider selling him, and I fully expect that with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes now in place on the football administration side, a new deal will be finalised.

Xabi Alonso uncertainty shouldn’t be too much of a worry for Liverpool

Xabi Alonso to Liverpool?

The situation regarding Xabi Alonso remains unchanged for now as far as I’m aware; there has been no indication of what he wants to do in the summer as his focus remains very much on Bayer Leverkusen and what could be an incredible end to the season.

German reports suggest that Bayern Munich is his favoured destination, but Alonso and his camp have been very quiet and until there is any clarity from their side, I think it’s a case of wait and see.

What is clear, as said previously, is that he is going to have at least three options to choose from this summer. Not a bad place for any young manager to be in!

If Alonso is not available, one thing is for certain now that Michael Edwards is in place as Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football; Liverpool will do extensive research before appointing their next manager.

Edwards has always championed a data-driven approach to recruitment, and that will certainly be the case with finding Jurgen Klopp’s successor. Liverpool’s research team, led by Will Spearman, have already been hard at work, and there will already have been a whittling-down of contenders.

In terms of names, it should not surprise you to learn that Ruben Amorim is well thought of within Liverpool, and Roberto De Zerbi is another strong contender. De Zerbi would have been in contention to take over at Bournemouth in 2022 when Richard Hughes was technical director, but for a change in ownership at the Cherries, and Hughes is a known fanatic of Italian football and Italian methodology.

Edwards and Hughes also have strong relationships with both Eddie Howe and Gary O’Neil, but I don’t expect either of those two to come into contention for the role this summer. If O’Neil were to continue impressing at Wolves, however, then I wouldn’t rule out the idea of him coming onto Liverpool’s radar in the future.

Donyell Malen to Liverpool? There’s room for another attacking player at Anfield

Donyell Malen has been linked with Liverpool, but how likely is a move for the Borussia Dortmund forward, who has also been linked at times with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal?

I think when we talk about potential signings at Liverpool this summer, we have to acknowledge that much will be dictated by the managerial appointment. As such, confirming concrete ‘targets’ is difficult at this moment.

What we do know is that Malen was looked at previously, when at PSV Eindhoven, and not followed up on. He’s done OK at Dortmund since, nothing more, and while he fits Liverpool’s profile in terms of age and experience, I’d be sceptical as to whether he’s of the quality required to improve a pretty well-stocked attack.

Me personally? I feel there is room for another attacker at Liverpool this summer, even if Mohamed Salah remains – and there’s a decent chance of that, by the way. I still feel they lack a little bit of searing pace, particularly out wide, and I wonder if that might be an area they look at in this window. They have some talented young players emerging, such as Ben Doak, Kaide Gordon and Jayden Danns, but I think there is room for another senior forward in the squad, and even more so if Salah – or Luis Diaz, who has been linked with PSG – were to leave.

Arsenal FC expert Charles Watts has provided some exclusive insight into attacking players such as Pedro Neto and Nico Williams being considered by the Gunners ahead of the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest column in the Daily Briefing, Watts explained that he’s not entirely convinced by recent transfer rumours linking Arsenal with Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen, as he named Neto and Williams as players who might be higher on the club’s list.

Neto has impressed in his time in the Premier League with Wolves and would surely be a popular choice among many AFC fans, though his injury record is perhaps a bit of a concern.

Williams, meanwhile, may not be proven in English football, but has lit up La Liga in recent times and looks well worth investing in, with Fabrizio Romano also previously revealing to us that Chelsea have joined Arsenal in scouting him.

Pedro Neto of Wolves has been linked with Arsenal

Neto transfer among Arsenal priorities out wide

Arsenal seem keen to add a winger to their squad this summer, which makes sense as Mikel Arteta lacks real alternatives to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, so fans will surely be pleased to hear about talents like Neto and Williams being on the north Londoners’ radar.

Williams may also have admirers in the form of Chelsea, but one imagines Arsenal would be the far more attractive destination at the moment after the Blues’ recent decline which has seen them slip to mid-table.

“My understanding is that Arsenal are looking for a player who can operate in the wide positions and Malen has obviously done very well since leaving north London in 2017 and going to PSV and then to Dortmund. But I would be surprised if he is a genuine option for Arsenal,” Watts said.

“What I do know is that they have a long-standing interest in Pedro Neto, while Nico Williams is also understood to be high up on their list of potential targets. I see players like those two well ahead of Malen in the pecking order when it comes to the summer.”

Liverpool have shown an interest in Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen in the past, but without following up on it, according to Neil Jones.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his column for the Daily Briefing, Jones responded to the fresh Liverpool links with Malen, whilst also acknowledging that the Netherlands international has also seemingly attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United.

Although Liverpool already have big names like Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo to choose from in attack, it seems Jones would welcome another addition to that area of the pitch.

The Reds writer feels it could be worth thinking about bringing someone in amid doubts over both Salah and Diaz, while one imagines there’ll also be a fair few LFC fans who have been unconvinced with what they’ve seen from Gakpo so far at Anfield.

Malen transfer: Neil Jones’ verdict in this week’s column

Would Malen be the ideal signing for Liverpool? Jones had his say, casting some scepticism about the player, even if he also acknowledged that he fits the profile for the club.

Donyell Malen celebrates a goal for Borussia Dortmund

Jones said: “Donyell Malen has been linked with Liverpool, but how likely is a move for the Borussia Dortmund forward, who has also been linked at times with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal?

Jadon Sancho’s high-calibre performances for Borussia Dortmund could yet force out Donyell Malen from the club.

The Englishman’s in-form teammate could be used as a makeweight in a potential swap deal that would see the ex-Manchester United man stay put in Germany.

That said, Edin Terzic’s men won’t be short of suitors for the 25-year-old right-sided attacker.

“Jadon Sancho is getting better and better. Most recently he scored against Bremen and Eindhoven. The club looked up old data from the archives to compare Sancho’s stats from his first time at Dortmund. His training plan will then be adjusted,” Christian Falk shared in his exclusive Fact Files column.

“Sports director Sebastian Kehl is very happy with Sancho. That’s why he wants to talk to Manchester United in May. The goal: another loan.

“But there is also a plan B: Donyell Malen is currently playing in his best form since he joined Dortmund. Manchester United are interested in him. Dortmund would give him away. A swap deal would be possible.

“Good for Dortmund: Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC are also interested in the Dutchman.”

Malen is enjoying a superb run in the German top-flight in recent weeks, registering eight goal contributions in his last seven league games.

Could Sancho return to Manchester United?

It seems highly unlikely at this stage – barring the emergence of a very public apology to Erik ten Hag – that Sancho will restore his career at Old Trafford.

That said, given how a return to Germany has rejuvenated a flagging career, the 23-year-old may very well feel content with the idea of staying put.

Perhaps only a change of manager in Manchester could tempt Sancho into a different way of thinking at this stage.

Man United are in the market for a new forward and according to a recent report, the Red Devils’ interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen is serious.

The Dutch star has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga club in recent months and Man United are one club that have often been linked.

According to Football Insider, Erik ten Hag likes the versatility of the 25-year-old as Malen can play as a winger and a striker.

The United boss is very keen to strengthen his front line and could use Jadon Sancho to bring his fellow countryman to Old Trafford.

Malen has been at Dortmund since 2021 and has hit 13 goals, alongside five assists, in 33 appearances across all competitions for the German club during the current campaign.

Donyell Malen is wanted by Man United
Donyell Malen is wanted by Man United

Donyell Malen is not the answer for Man United

Although Malen has been in good form of late, the 25-year-old is not the answer for Man United.

Ten Hag needs a proper goalscorer who can net at least 20 goals a season in the Premier League, with a player such as Inter’s Lautaro Martinez being a prime example of who United should target.

Malen would be a nice player to sign alongside a number nine as he would provide adequate cover across multiple positions given his versatility.

This summer is a huge one for the direction Man United want to go in and the Manchester club must get their signings for key positions right or it could be costly.
