Arsenal would ideally like to keep Emile Smith Rowe, according to Gunners expert Charles Watts in his latest exclusive column for the Daily Briefing.

Speaking to CaughtOffside for this week’s column, Watts discussed the current situation regarding Smith Rowe and interest from Fulham and Crystal Palace, while he also provided some insight into what’s going on with Eddie Nketiah and a possible move to Marseille.

Arsenal fans will no doubt be keen to have these players’ situations resolved soon, so they have a clearer idea of what kind of squad Mikel Arteta will be working with next season in what could be a hugely important campaign for the club.

Having come so close to winning the Premier League title last term, Arsenal now urgently need to have a good transfer window, and that will likely require some player sales to help fund new signings.

Smith Rowe and Nketiah make sense as candidates for the exit door after a lack of recent playing time, and Watts has given us his latest understanding of their situations, admitting that Smith Rowe is perhaps a player Arteta could try to keep if he gets his way.

Arsenal transfer update from Charles Watts

Emile Smith Rowe in action for Arsenal

“There has been a bid from Fulham for Smith Rowe, but that has been rejected. A second bid is expected, but Crystal Palace are also expected to make an offer soon having made their interest in the playmaker known,” Watts said.

“In an ideal world, Mikel Arteta would keep Smith Rowe. This time last year he made it clear that he would not be sold and I think his stance would be the same this time around if it was just down to a footballing decision. But Smith Rowe now has just two years left on his contract and has a strong desire to be playing regular football having sat on the bench for much of the last two seasons.

“So Arsenal would reluctantly let him leave should a good offer arrive from Fulham, Palace or anyone else. But at the moment that offer has not arrived and that is why Smith Rowe has flown with the squad to the United States. It’s certainly not a case that Arsenal will be forcing him out of the door.”

He added: “It’s a similar situation for Nketiah. Marseille’s interest is interesting. It would be a bold and exciting move for Nketiah to make. But for Arsenal to let him go, then Marseille would have to commit to stumping up some serious cash. Whether they can hit the type of number that Arsenal are holding out for is up for debate.

“I don’t believe a bid has arrived yet from the French club. The interest is there, but as far as I’ve been told it hasn’t materialised into anything concrete yet.”

Marseille are reportedly working on signing Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah on loan this summer, with the obligation to make the move permanent at the end of it.

Nketiah has struggled for playing time at the Emirates Stadium in recent times, so it perhaps makes sense that his future with the Gunners is now in serious doubt.

According to the Daily Mirror, it could be that Marseille will be his next destination, as the Ligue 1 giants look for a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and a partner for new signing Mason Greenwood.

Even if Nketiah has not quite made it at Arsenal, he’s shown some potential at times and could be someone who’d have a positive impact for a number of other big clubs in England or elsewhere around Europe.

Nketiah transfer: Opportunity for Arsenal to make pure profit

Eddie Nketiah to Marseille?

Selling an academy player like Nketiah will surely be very tempting for Arsenal, as the 25-year-old is homegrown, so cost them nothing to sign, meaning his sale can be put down as pure profit from a Financial Fair Play point of view.

Some Arsenal fans might well think it’s worth keeping Nketiah as a squad player as Mikel Arteta could find himself short of depth without him, though that might be a risk worth taking.

If AFC can cash in on Nketiah then they would have a decent amount of freedom to go and spend on a replacement, so it will be interesting to see how this saga pans out, with a loan move perhaps not the best option for the north London giants.

Arsenal are actively looking to make new additions in the transfer market this summer.

The Gunners have lost the Premier League title race against Manchester City for the last two seasons but they are determined to fight again against Pep Guardiola’s star studded squad.

Mikel Arteta has made the signing of goalkeeper David Raya permanent this summer and another signing could soon be completed as Gunners edge closer to Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori.

The North Londoners are eyeing a move for another defender and they are prepared to offer striker Eddie Nketiah in a deal to sign him.

According to the Sunday Star, as reported by the Express, Arsenal are willing to offer Nketiah in a swap deal to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Palace defender has attracted the interest of some of the biggest Premier League clubs due to his fine performances in the Premier League and for England at the Euros this summer.

It would not be wrong to say that he was one of England’s best players in the competition after showing consistency and reliability at the back for the Three Lions.

Marc Guehi Arsenal
Marc Guehi to Arsenal?

The centre-back is valued at £70m by Crystal Palace and the Gunners are prepared to offer Nketiah plus cash in a deal to sign him.

Arteta already has William Saliba and Gabriel as his starting centre-backs, who had the best defensive record in the league last season.

Adding Calafiori and potentially Guehi would make it one of the strongest defensive line ups in European football.

The report has mentioned that Nketiah is liked by Palace and they have shown interest to sign the Arsenal attacker.

Arsenal face competition from Liverpool to sign Guehi

It remains to be seen where Guehi will be playing his football next season as Liverpool boss Arne Slot is also keen on signing the England international.

The Reds have still not replaced Joel Matip after his exit from Anfield this summer and they are ready to target Guehi to partner him with Virgil Van Dijk in their defensive setup.

Guehi has shown he belongs to a bigger club and sooner or later, a move to a top six Premier League club will come for him.

There’s always so much transfer news to sift through at this time of the year, but we’ve put together ten deals that genuinely look like ones to watch out for very soon, if Fabrizio Romano and other top journalists are anything to go by.

While there’s still plenty of time left until Deadline Day, and we’ve seen more than a few twists and turns in some major sagas in recent times, here’s a look at some signings that should go through soon due to being at an advanced stage, or that are at least being worked on at the moment.

Read on four our pick of ten transfer deals to watch out for next this summer…

Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal

After weeks of speculation, it now looks like the Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal transfer deal is more or less a done deal, with just some formalities remaining before it can be made official, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column earlier today, Romano said: “Riccardo Calafiori and Arsenal – the ‘here we go’ is coming because there is an agreement between Arsenal and Bologna on a €40m fixed fee, €5m in add-ons, and a sell-on clause for Bologna.

“Calafiori had already agreed a contract with Arsenal back in June, which would be until 2029, so everything is ready for him to go to Arsenal.

“Despite some reports that the deal had stalled, the reality is that the negotiations never stopped. It was not easy, but they kept going, and now there’s an agreement.”

Manuel Ugarte to Manchester United

After some exciting early deals for young talents Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, Manchester United could make another smart move to strengthen their squad as they’ve agreed personal terms with PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

As also reported by Romano, Ugarte wants to join Man Utd, and the Uruguay international looks like he could be an important upgrade on inconsistent performers like Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat, who looked far from good enough for much of last season.

This perhaps isn’t as advanced as something like the Calafiori to Arsenal deal, as United still need to agree a deal with PSG, but one imagines they’ll be prepared t let him go as they have a midfield signing of their own in the works. More on that next…

Joao Neves to PSG

Although it’s not done yet, PSG are accelerating their efforts to sign Benfica midfield wonderkid Joao Neves, as French football expert Jonathan Johnson exclusively told us for his column last week.

Neves is one of the most exciting young players in the world in his position, and it makes sense that the Ligue 1 giants seem keen to offload someone like Ugarte and bring in this exciting long-term addition who perhaps looks a better fit for Luis Enrique’s style of play.

“Joao Neves to PSG looks to be accelerating at the moment, with PSG stealing a march on other European competitors,” Johnson said on Thursday.

“PSG are looking to negotiate a deal with Benfica, with Neves happy to make the move to the Parc des Princes. It’s now down to the two clubs to reach an agreement.”

Victor Osimhen to PSG

Another big name to watch for PSG will be Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is another concrete target for the French champions as they look for a big-name signing up front to replace departing star Kylian Mbappe.

Osimhen to PSG looks to be advancing, as Romano recently told us, and it’s fair to say the Nigeria international will be one of the biggest names to move this summer if this deal does go through.

Napoli aren’t an easy club to negotiate with, so this one can’t be considered a done deal yet, but it seems there is serious intent there from PSG, who surely need upgrades on last summer’s unconvincing new attacking duo Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani.

Victor Osimhen to PSG and Romelu Lukaku to Napoli?

Romelu Lukaku to Napoli

If Osimhen does leave Napoli for PSG, Romano has made it clear that Romelu Lukaku to Napoli would be one to watch, with the Belgian striker surely having no future at Chelsea.

Lukaku has been out on loan for the last two seasons, first at Inter Milan and then at Roma, and it seems he could now be set for a spell with a third Serie A club.

Even if Lukaku has flopped at Chelsea, Napoli would surely be pretty happy with him as a replacement for Osimhen up front, especially as one imagines he probably wouldn’t be too expensive.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah wants to leave the Premier League club to join Marseille ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as talks get underway between both clubs.

According to FootMercato’s Santi Aouna, Marseille have sent an undisclosed offer to Arsenal for the striker as talks are underway to agree a transfer fee.

Negotiations are also underway with the player as the French club look to agree personal terms with the Arsenal star. The 25-year-old is believed to want to complete a move to the Ligue 1 giants ahead of the new season as he has been completely convinced by their sporting project.

Marseille are looking to put a strong squad together for the 2024/25 campaign as they try to knock PSG off of their perch.

The French giants have already acquired the services of Mason Greenwood, Ismael Kone and Bamo Meite so far this summer and are now looking to add Nketiah to their attacking ranks.

Arsenal should cash in on Eddie Nketiah this summer

Nketiah has been at Arsenal his whole career and has supported several strikers at the Emirates Stadium over the last few years. The 25-year-old has shown that he is a good player and deserves to be a starter at another club that is a step below the Gunners.

The forward featured in 37 matches for the North London club last season as he backed up Kai Havertz, netting six goals and assisting a further three in all competitions. This took his numbers at Arsenal up to 168 appearances, with the English star producing 38 goals and seven assists.

The Gunners star would be a great signing for Marseille and it is a transfer that would also suit Arsenal.

Nketiah is a player Mikel Arteta can afford to lose and his sale would help raise funds to bring in new talent. The North London club need to strengthen their squad again ahead of the upcoming campaign as they plan another run at the Premier League title.

Arsenal are eyeing up two potential striker transfer targets in the form of Ajax’s Brian Brobbey and Lille’s Jonathan David as they could soon be set to sell Eddie Nketiah to Marseille.

Sources with a close understanding of the situation at Arsenal have informed CaughtOffside that although nothing is advanced yet for the Gunners to sign a new striker, they have Brobbey and David on their list as potential options, while they’re open to selling Nketiah for the right price.

Marseille want Nketiah as well as Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, and CaughtOffside understands that the Ligue 1 giants are preparing an opening offer in the region of €25m for the Arsenal striker.

How to buy tickets for the Euro 2024 final

Arsenal, however, do not intend to sell Nketiah on the cheap, and are understood to value him at closer to €35-40m, and they may feel they’re in a strong position to hold out for more money due to the long list of clubs interested in the 25-year-old this summer.

Nketiah transfer: Arsenal ace wanted by Marseille and Premier League clubs

As well as Marseille, CaughtOffside understands Arsenal’s Nketiah is also attracting interest from Brentford, Crystal Palace, Everton, West Ham United and Wolves.

Sources believe these clubs could also make moves for Nketiah soon, so Marseille may need to up their offer if they are serious about luring him to France.

Nketiah himself, meanwhile, is understood to be open to leaving the Emirates Stadium for a new challenge after falling down the pecking order and seeing a lot less playing time in Mikel Arteta’s side last season.

Being a homegrown player, AFC could make pure profit from selling Nketiah, so this is undoubtedly a deal that will appeal to them as they look to raise funds for players to come in, though it remains to be seen if they will end up prioritising Brobbey and David, or focus on other positions.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is reportedly emerging as a transfer target for Marseille, with initial positive talks held, according to journalist Santi Aouna.

Nketiah has struggled for playing time in Mikel Arteta’s side in recent times, so it makes sense that he’ll surely be on his way out of the Emirates Stadium this summer for more playing time.

Marseille have Roberto de Zerbi in as their new manager and are also closing in on signing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, according to Fabrizio Romano via his Daily Briefing column.

See below as Nketiah is now another name being linked with Marseille this summer, with the Ligue 1 giants exploring this possibility and having positive contacts so far…

Nketiah could surely be a useful signing for a club like Marseille, even if things haven’t quite gone to plan for him at Arsenal.

The 25-year-old clearly has some potential, even if he’s not quite good enough to be a regular starter for Arsenal, and it will be interesting to see if he benefits from moving abroad for a new challenge.

Arsenal have had a quiet start to the summer, but player sales like this could be essential to help the north London club keep in line with Financial Fair Play laws and to afford the signings they need.

Nketiah being homegrown means Arsenal would make pure profit from his sale, so the club will no doubt be hoping to get a decent fee to give them a bit of breathing room as they look to afford some big-name targets.

Eddie Nketiah could leave Arsenal for Marseille

Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal remains in the works, while Fabrizio Romano has also told CaughtOffside about Arsenal’s Mikel Merino interest in the latest edition of his exclusive column.

Calafiori and Merino look like ideal additions to Arteta’s squad, while fans will probably be content with squad players like Nketiah leaving this summer.

Arsenal express interest in Riccardo Calafiori transfer

The current links with Riccardo Calafiori remind me of Arsenal’s interest in Manuel Locatelli a few years ago. The club liked Locatelli and had made that known to the player’s representatives, but they were always under the impression that he wanted to join Juventus. So while the interest was there, it never really went any further than that.

And that’s how I see things with Calafiori right now. Arsenal are interested in him and have expressed that interest. Bologna are aware of it and so is the player. Calafiori is seen as someone who could come in and strengthen Mikel Arteta’s defensive options this summer. But Arsenal know that there is widespread interest in him from other clubs, both in Italy and in the Premier League. So it will not be an easy deal to get done should Bologna agree to let him go.

It is one to keep an eye on though as the summer progresses and there’s no doubt it would be an exciting signing for the Gunners should they be able to pull it off.

Calafiori has obviously put himself in a shop window with his performances at the Euros. Several top clubs are looking at him, but the expectation right now is that he would favour a move to Juventus over all other options. At the moment there seems to be a bit of animosity between Bologna and Juventus, however, because of Thiago Motta’s decision to move to Turin, so Bologna are looking to make life as difficult as possible for Juventus as they look to lure Calafiori away as well.

For Bologna, it is of course very beneficial to have Arsenal and Chelsea looking at the player as that could strengthen their hand when it comes to any future negotiations with Juventus.

Arsenal are looking at possible new arrivals in defence this summer, but they have good options at the back and I don’t really see them spending big money on someone like Calafiori unless they move a player on and right now that doesn’t seem close to happening.

There is interest from Italian clubs in Jakob Kiwior, but it would take a sizeable bid to sign the Poland international, who impressed last season – especially over the closing months of the campaign.

Eddie Nketiah has admirers but £50m price tag has not been confirmed

A possible price tag of £50 million for Eddie Nketiah has been a big discussion point over the last week or so. I have to admit though, I’m a bit sceptical about that figure.

Arsenal are open to offers for Nketiah and I’ve always felt like this will be the summer that he does leave the club. I struggle to see someone paying £50m for him though.  That just feels a bit too high for me, although from Arsenal’s point of view it makes sense to value him as high as possible when it comes to any negotiations.

It’s simple business really, but I’ve not been told that the £50m figure is accurate.  Nketiah is a decent player though and I do think Arsenal should be getting good money for him this summer.

He’s still only 25 and he’s proven that he can score goals in the Premier League. He’s also improved his all round game massively under Mikel Arteta.

Eddie Nketiah in action for Arsenal

He just needs to go and play regularly now. If he does that, I have no doubt that he can make a big impact somewhere.

Crystal Palace are long-term admirers of the striker and he’s been close to going to Selhurst Park on more than one occasion in the last couple of years. Fulham, Brighton and West Ham are also believed to be interested.

At the moment Nketiah is over in Marbella with a handful of other Arsenal players as they prepare for the start of preseason. Arteta is with them and he has shown he has plenty of faith in Nketiah.

So I don’t think Arsenal will push him out of the door this summer, but they are certainly open to offers. Whether anyone will go as far as £50m though, I’m not so sure.

Were Arsenal right to sell Granit Xhaka when they did?

Granit Xhaka is deservedly getting the plaudits for his fantastic performances for Switzerland at the Euros. He’s been absolutely superb, just as he was for Beyer Leverkusen during their remarkable season in Germany in 2023/24.

Obviously people are looking at how he has been performing since leaving Arsenal and question whether the club made a mistake in letting him go.

I don’t think they did, although I’m convinced they would have won the title had he still been in North London last season.

The football he is producing now should be no surprise because he’s playing exactly as he did during his final two years with Arsenal. Mikel Arteta took his game to a new level and he has continued that under Xabi Alonso.

Ideally, Arteta would have liked Xhaka to have stayed at Arsenal, but Xhaka wanted to go. Arteta had managed to convince him to stay with the club 12 months earlier when the Swiss International was again pushing for a move. But he was unable to do the same in 2023.

Xhaka only had a year left on his contract and made it clear to Arsenal during the final few months of the 2022/23 campaign that he wanted a new challenge. Arsenal could have kept him of course, but then they would have lost him for nothing in the summer of 2024. So they had to let him go really.

It was just about trying to get the best deal possible for him, which I think they did when you take into account his age and contract status. A fee of £21.5 million was pretty decent.

Arteta was very loyal to Xhaka. The pair had an excellent relationship and had a great amount of respect for each other. So when Xhaka said he wanted to go, Arteta reluctantly agreed to allow it to happen.

Xhaka had spent a long time at Arsenal and at times his stay was very difficult. The way he turned things round and won over the supporters was an unbelievable redemption story and I think it was the right decision to let him go out on a high, especially with Declan Rice coming in.

Arsenal will surely sign a midfielder, but Ugarte and Rabiot seem unlikely

I did smile to myself when I saw reports saying Manuel Ugarte had been offered to Arsenal.

It might well have happened obviously, but Arsenal are not in the business any more of signing unwanted players because they are offered to them by clubs or agents.

Arsenal’s transfer policy now is planned out months in advance and one thing they will not do is sign someone just for the sake of it.

I will be very surprised if they don’t sign a midfielder this summer. It’s an area they are working hard to strengthen, but I would be surprised if it’s a player that another club are just looking to get rid of.

Adrien Rabiot is another name that seems to be linked every few months and he is now on the market obviously as a free agent after his contract ended with Juventus. But I don’t see him being an option for Arsenal. He just doesn’t tick the right boxes when it comes to the type of profile they look for.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Martin Zubimendi once the Euros comes to an end. His future will be decided one way or the other and we know Arsenal are long-term admirers.

Getting him out of Real Sociedad won’t be easy, as he has suggested himself given his love for the club, but I don’t think Arsenal have totally given up hope on that one yet.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has interest from four Premier League clubs this summer amid talk of him possibly leaving the Emirates Stadium for a transfer fee as high as £50million.

However, speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Charles Watts played down the idea of Nketiah costing as much as £50m, saying he hadn’t had this price tag confirmed by his sources, despite it circulating in some media outlets recently.

Discussing the possible suitors for Nketiah, Watts named West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Fulham as possible options for the 25-year-old ahead of next season, though it seems nothing is particularly advanced on this story for the moment.

Although Watts says he’s sceptical about the £50m price tag doing the rounds, he does think Arsenal should be in line to get good money for Nketiah, so this could be a deal to watch out for, and one that could have a big impact for the club as it would represent pure profit from a Financial Fair Play perspective.

Nketiah transfer update from Arsenal expert Charles Watts

Eddie Nketiah could leave Arsenal this summer

“A possible price tag of £50 million for Eddie Nketiah has been a big discussion point over the last week or so. I have to admit though, I’m a bit sceptical about that figure,” Watts said.

“Arsenal are open to offers for Nketiah and I’ve always felt like this will be the summer that he does leave the club. I struggle to see someone paying £50m for him though.  That just feels a bit too high for me, although from Arsenal’s point of view it makes sense to value him as high as possible when it comes to any negotiations.

“It’s simple business really, but I’ve not been told that the £50m figure is accurate.  Nketiah is a decent player though and I do think Arsenal should be getting good money for him this summer.

“He’s still only 25 and he’s proven that he can score goals in the Premier League. He’s also improved his all round game massively under Mikel Arteta.

“He just needs to go and play regularly now. If he does that, I have no doubt that he can make a big impact somewhere.”

He added: “Crystal Palace are long-term admirers of the striker and he’s been close to going to Selhurst Park on more than one occasion in the last couple of years. Fulham, Brighton and West Ham are also believed to be interested.”

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is reportedly available for £50million this summer as West Ham United are among the clubs being linked with the player.

Nketiah has struggled for playing time at the Emirates Stadium for a while now, and it makes sense that the Gunners are now keen to offload him to raise funds for other areas of their squad.

West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford have been among Nketiah’s suitors in recent times, and it seems the Hammers now have to decide if they’re willing to meet Arsenal’s pretty hefty asking price for the 25-year-old.

£50m might not be as much as it used to be in the transfer market, but it’s still a considerable outlay for someone who has just nine Premier League goals in the last two years, and 19 in his top flight career in total.

Of course, Nketiah would likely play more at West Ham so could therefore get the chance to score more goals, but it still seems like a risky price to be paying when there could surely be other cheaper players out there who would bring more proven quality and experience to Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Arsenal are also expected to sell other homegrown players like Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson this summer.
