Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has revealed Tyler Adams will miss the start of the new Premier League season after undergoing back surgery. 

Adams joined the Cherries from Leeds United last summer in a deal worth over £20m (per BBC Sport) but has been beset by injury troubles.

The United States international was restricted to four appearances across all competitions, notching up just 118 minutes of Premier League action.

However, that didn’t stop Adams from being called into the US squad for this summer’s Copa America, with the 25-year-old playing all three group matches to the tune of 180 minutes — as well as 14 minutes in a pre-tournament friendly against Brazil.

The Stars and Stripes suffered a shock group stage exit from the tournament with back-to-back defeats to Panama (2-1) and Uruguay (1-0) after they beat Bolivia 2-0 in their opening match.

But by then, the damage was already done, with Iraola admitting Adams’ desperation to play at Copa America only serving to aggravate a back injury he picked up toward the end of the domestic season.

“He finished the season with an injury in his back,” said the Spanish coach.

“He wanted to play Copa America because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain, so two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery.

“He is out for some time. It is difficult to say how long but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know.”

Pushed further on the issue of why Adams was called up in the first place, Iraola insisted the club had no say in the matter.

He added: “It was not our choice. It is a decision for the nations, who are allowed to select players, and he wanted to play thinking the injury would get better but he felt it was getting worse.”

Liverpool could have as many as nine names on their list of midfield transfer targets as we head towards the end of the summer transfer window, according to Neil Jones.

Writing exclusively for CaughtOffside, Jones named a long list of candidates for the Reds in the middle of the park after being beaten to both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia by Chelsea.

While Jones ruled out Liverpool moving for the likes of Tyler Adams and Sofyan Amrabat, he mentioned Manu Kone, Khephren Thuram, Florentino Luis, Joao Palhinha, Cheick Doucoure, Martin Zubimendi, Kalvin Phillips, Ibrahim Sangare and Ryan Gravenberch as possible names to look out for.

Liverpool have had a difficult summer so far, with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all leaving the club, and it’s fair to say it’s left them a little light in the middle of the park.

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai both joined earlier in the window, but one imagines Jurgen Klopp will want at least one more signing in that position, and fans would surely be happy with most of the names mentioned above.

It is speculated that Chelsea backing out of the deal has much to do with Liverpool’s attempt to hijack the deal for Moises Caicedo. Due to FFP regulations they could not outbid Liverpool’s £111m bid but could be able to after backing out their £20m deal for Adams.

Alternatively, there are reports that Chelsea’s decision might have been influenced by concerns about Adams’ hamstring injury.

Chelsea had also come in for Tyler Adams and his release clause had been met, but then the west Londoners backed out of the deal.

It’s now been revealed, by the Daily Mail, that the reason for not following through with the transfer was that Adams has a hamstring injury that, although his camp claim will have cleared up enough for him to resume playing after the September international break, rumours suggest could be much longer.

Either way, Adams being sold or not in the team because of injury doesn’t help Farke in any way, shape or form.

The German will need things to settle down sooner rather than later if he wants his squad to be able to build up a head of steam.

The 24-year-old United States international was expected to move to Stamford Bridge this summer but it seems that the transfer has now collapsed.

According to a report from Daily Mail, the midfielder failed his medical and Chelsea has now pulled out of the move.

The 24-year-old tore his hamstring back in March and he was expected to return before the start of the new season.

However the medical with Chelsea revealed that the player could be sidelined for another four months.

It makes sense for them to pull out of the transfer given the fact that Adams will be sidelined for several weeks.

The Blues have been trying to sign Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo. Both players were quite impressive in the Premier League last season and they could prove to be excellent acquisitions for Mauricio Pochettino.

Chelsea sanctioned the departures of Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante earlier this summer and they must look to replace the two players adequately before the new season begins.

Brighton

• Liverpool have submitted their official bid for Moisés Caicedo in the early hours of Friday morning and Brighton are set to accept. The offer is a fee of around £110m – a new record for a British transfer. Caicedo will become a Liverpool player on Friday if all goes to plan.

Burnley

Chelsea will certainly fancy their chances of signing a quality midfielder on a bargain and it remains to be seen whether they can get a deal for Adams done quickly.
