Although it’s unlikely anyone at the club will come out and say it in interviews, Arsenal really do need to win the Premier League title in 2024/25.

By the end of the upcoming season, Mikel Arteta will have been at the helm for five and a half years, and backed to the hilt by his board during every transfer window.

If he’s still unable to land silverware in the English top-flight, the Gunners hierarchy surely have to at least question what needs to happen in order for the Spaniard to be able to get over the line.

Arteta will, of course, live or die by his transfer decisions, and one that he appears to have made recently is astonishing.

Despite being incredibly injury prone and hardly having played for the club during 2023/24, according to Football Transfers, the club don’t want to sell Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal keeping hold of Gabriel Jesus

The 27-year-old is apparently fitter than ever according to club sources, though frankly that’s not difficult considering the horrendous time that he’s had with injuries over the past couple of seasons.

In the last two seasons alone he’s missed 33 games according to transfermarkt, mainly due to knee problems.

If nothing else, he has to prove himself all over again, and that may be what benefits the squad most.

Arsenal are going to keep faith with Gabriel Jesus
Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Gabriel Jesus

Genuine strength in depth is what all managers purport to wanting from their squads, so even if Gabriel Jesus isn’t a first choice, if he’s champing at the bit to be involved, that can only be good from Arteta’s point of view.

Time will tell of course just how fit the player is, and whether he can prove to be a genuine asset for his club in their fight to topple his former employers, Man City, from their perch.

It’s set to be an important summer transfer window for Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta looking to sign those players he believes will finally get them over the line in the Premier League title race.

Benjamin Sesko was believed to be a target, however, he has now committed himself to another season at RB Leipzig according to CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, writing on X (formerly Twitter).

Romano has also noted that a long-term target of the Gunners, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, is on the verge of a sensational swap deal with Juventus.

Notwithstanding any disappointment Arsenal will clearly feel if they were to miss out on both targets, there are likely to be more players available and ready to move.

Although focus is likely to remain on incoming players, the club have to be attentive to those players that wish to move on or the club prefer to sell.

Arsenal ready to sell Gabriel Jesus

One of those, according to The Athletic (subscription required) is Brazilian forward, Gabriel Jesus.

During 2023/24, the striker managed a reasonable eight goals and eight assists according to WhoScored, however, his season was once again peppered with injury concerns.

Despite being just 27 years of age, and arguably in that period which is defined as a player’s ‘peak’ years, the persistent threat of further injuries is clearly behind Arsenal’s decision to accept offers for Gabriel Jesus’ services.

It’s believed that the player himself would prefer to stay at the Emirates Stadium, though Arsenal’s pursuit of Sesko in particular means that Jesus will understand that if he does remain at the North London outfit, that he can’t consider himself as the first choice striker any longer.

At present, it isn’t clear just how much the Gunners will want for his services, though he’ll surely be priced to sell.

Arsenal reviving Douglas Luiz transfer interest can’t be ruled out

Douglas Luiz is a player Arsenal have admired for some time. It’s not a secret. In fact, we know that they tried very hard to lure him away from Aston Villa two years ago when they had multiple bids rejected for the midfielder on deadline day.

Mikel Arteta and Edu were both convinced enough by Luiz’s quality that the club made offers, but Villa were adamant at the time that they would not sell. So we know that Arsenal are long-term admirers of the Brazilian, which explains why links are once again surfacing over a potential move this summer.

I haven’t heard anything yet to suggest that Arsenal will try again for Luiz, however. But it’s one of those transfers you could never completely rule out as we know he is a player that they like. Although at the moment, if he goes anywhere, it looks like it could be Juventus.

Arsenal moving for Luiz would make sense for a number of reasons, however. We know they are in the market for a central midfielder this summer and it looks like Villa’s PSR problems could mean that he is available for a relatively decent price.

Luiz knows the league, so would not need time to adjust to the demands of playing in England and he has shown with his form for Villa that he is a top level player who would improve the Arsenal squad.

So if Arsenal did decide to step up their interest in Luiz this summer, I wouldn’t view it as a bad move, especially if the price is a good one. It could be one of those market opportunities that arise from time to time that is just too good to walk away from.

I think if I were choosing between Luiz and Bruno Guimaraes, that I would probably opt for the latter. I just think Bruno would offer Arsenal a little bit more in terms of what they need right now.

But he would certainly be the more expensive option and given Arsenal are looking to strengthen throughout the squad this summer, I would understand it if they went down the slightly cheaper route and looked to take advantage of Villa’s need to raise some cash this window.

No way Man City would sell Julian Alvarez to Arsenal

I just don’t see any way that Manchester City would sell a player to Arsenal this summer, especially one as talented as Julian Alvarez.

There have been reports that the Argentine forward could be on his way out of City this summer, and we’ve unsurprisingly seen a host of names linked with him, but I wouldn’t expect this to be a saga that Arsenal get involved in.

City see Arsenal as genuine challenges now. They didn’t when they sanctioned the deals for Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko two years ago, but that view has changed, for obvious reasons.

We saw it last summer when Arsenal touched base to ask about Joao Cancelo – City made it clear they would not do business with them again and I can’t see that changing this time around, given how closely matched the two teams now are.

Alvarez is a quality player, but if he does end up leaving City this summer, we won’t be seeing him pitch up at the Emirates, even if there is a need and a desire for a top signing up front.

Arsenal pushed for Jadon Sancho in the past, but what about now?

Given what Mikel Arteta has done with Kai Havertz, you would never rule out him being able to turn around any player’s career. He’s a manager who has shown he can improve a player and get them performing at the highest level again.

Arsenal need another wide option in the squad and in Jadon Sancho, there is undoubtedly a high quality winger on the market this summer, with Manchester United looking to sell him, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Sancho gave everyone a reminder of what he can do with his performances for Dortmund while he was back in Germany on loan and I’m sure there will be plenty of interest in him on the back of that spell.

I can’t see Arsenal being one of those interested clubs, however, despite their need for a new winger – something I’ve discussed more here.

The club were interested in Sancho in the past, way back when he was still a youngster at Manchester City and hadn’t signed his new contract.

Arsene Wenger was pushing for him then, but he opted to go to Dortmund instead. And you have to say, given the way his career went after he left England for Germany, you have to say it was probably the right decision.

Arsenal stars to watch at Euro 2024

I’m really looking forward to the Euros and can’t wait to see all the Arsenal players in action.

Obviously, I think England have a great chance and I can see both Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice having a huge say in the tournament.

It makes me laugh when I see people questioning Saka’s place in the side. I know Cole Palmer has had a fantastic season for Chelsea, but it’s not like Saka had a bad one at Arsenal.

He scored 20 goals in all competitions, the most he’s ever scored in a single season. He also chipped in with 15 assists.

He was superb once again and has always delivered for England as well. If he’s fit, he has to start and he deserves to start.

There’s no doubt in my mind that if England go and win the Euros, then Saka will have played a big part in that.

I would love to see William Saliba start for France, but that doesn’t look like happening. It absolutely baffles me that Didier Deschamps prefers others over Saliba right now.

If I was a France fan I would be fuming to go into games with Saliba sitting on the bench.

I can see Leandro Trossard performing well for Belgium. He’s going into the tournament on the back of a really strong season and I think Belgium have a decent chance of going far in the competition. No-one is really tipping them to do much, but that might be a good thing. They don’t have that weight of expectation on them anymore and that could help them in the long-run.

I’m not quite sure what to make of Germany. They have some excellent players and in Kai Havertz they have a forward leading the line who must be full of confidence after such an impressive debut season with Arsenal.

He is also surrounded by some exceptional young talents like Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, so Havertz could have an excellent tournament.

In fact, I could see him being one of the stars of the competition. Lots of people are writing off Germany, but that feels dangerous to me. If they get some early wins and start to build momentum with all that home support, they could be very difficult to stop.

Arsenal could reportedly have a €90million transfer bid for Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez in the works as they look to replace Gabriel Jesus.

Things have not quite gone to plan for Jesus during his time at the Emirates Stadium so far, and it seems the Gunners are now seeking to offload him and they want Martinez to come in as an upgrade up front, with a potential €90m offer enough to persuade Inter to sell, according to Todo Fichajes.

Martinez has shone during his time in Serie A and it would be intriguing to see him in the Premier League, especially at Arsenal, where a world class focal point up front is precisely what Mikel Arteta’s side have been lacking for some time now.

Jesus has not done enough for Arsenal in that position, leading to Arteta using the likes of Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard out of position as the team’s main striker for a lot of the season just gone.

Lautaro Martinez to Arsenal?

Still, Martinez is more of a specialist in that position so seems ideal to give AFC that extra quality and goal threat that could finally see them close what has been a pretty slender gap between themselves and Manchester City in the last couple of years.

Martinez transfer: Should Arsenal sign the Inter front-man or look elsewhere?

Arsenal have also been linked with a host of other names to come in and bolster their attack, with the Independent recently naming the likes of Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Brian Brobbey as names on their radar.

Isak has performed well at Newcastle United and has that bonus of being proven in the Premier League, but there’s no doubt that Martinez is another exciting big name who could be better than what Arsenal currently have in that position.

The Argentina international also has the experience of winning titles at Inter, and one cannot underplay how crucial that could be for this otherwise youthful Gunners side.

Why Joao Cancelo didn’t join Rafael Leao at AC Milan

It was great to get the chance to speak to Rafael Leao about a number of topics, and it was interesting to hear that he tried to persuade Joao Cancelo to join him at AC Milan.

“I was talking with Joao Cancelo and he liked AC Milan… so I told Joao: ok, come to AC Milan!” Leao said. “He was at Man City, I tried… but it was difficult. It was like the perfect match for him to join our new era.”

The reason it didn’t happen is because Cancelo only wanted to play for Barcelona, but also it was never a club to club negotiation. Leao spoke to Cancelo, but Milan never spoke to City also because they already had two right-backs.

For Cancelo it was only Barca and he still hopes to stay at the club next season after joining them on loan from Man City this term.

The truth about Thomas Frank to Manchester United links

We’re hearing more speculation about the Manchester United job, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank the latest name to be linked as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag.

Still, as I always repeat about Manchester United – no decision has been made about Ten Hag’s position and we have to wait for that in order to understand what they will do with the new manager. There are many links but nothing will be concrete until they decide on Ten Hag.

I like Frank and he’s done an impressive job at Brentford, but it’s too early at the moment to be talking about him or anyone else as a candidate for United. Let’s see how Ten Hag ends the season, with two more league matches and the FA Cup final still to come.

Chelsea and Man United could join open race for Tosin Adarabioyo

Tosin Adarabioyo in action for Fulham

As previously reported, Tosin Adarabioyo has decided to leave Fulham as a free agent this summer, and so there’s unsurprisingly a lot of interest and a lot of media speculation about where he could go next.

Still, my understanding remains that Newcastle remain frontrunners, they are in advanced talks to sign Adarabioyo this summer, and they’re also chasing another defender in Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly. Newcastle want both players and are progressing well with these deals – they are optimistic about making it happen early in the summer.

Chelsea and Man United are also informed on conditions of the Adarabioyo deal but at the moment, there is still no substantial change in the race to sign the centre-back; until he signs the contract, it’s still open, so let’s see what happens and if there are any surprises, but for the moment Newcastle are leading the race and their interest is the most advanced.

One more point on Chelsea – despite some talk about them being open to selling both left-backs Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell this summer, there are no negotiations or talks for either Cucurella or Chilwell at this point. Chelsea are not negotiating for them, and also Cucurella is doing very well so at the moment the situation is still quiet.

Latest on three potential Arsenal exits, including Saudi-linked stars

It could be another big summer to watch for Saudi Pro League clubs, but at the moment it’s still early to know about things like budget, so although someone like Casemiro is a top target and he has chances to leave Manchester United, it’s not yet guaranteed that he’ll move to Saudi.

Two Arsenal stars have also been linked with Saudi. Firstly, Gabriel Jesus has been mentioned as a target, but at the moment he is not talking to any Saudi clubs. There are no proper negotiations ongoing, it’s just about interest. It’s the same for Thomas Partey – he was a target for Saudi last summer, but he’s not in contact with them at the moment.

Another name to watch at Arsenal is Reiss Nelson. It’s a possibility that he could be leaving the club. There was interest in Nelson last summer but he ended up signing a new contract. Still, he will now consider proposals in the summer and Arsenal too; they’re not desperate to part ways, only in case there’s a good proposal in the summer transfer window.

Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation of three Arsenal players ahead of this summer amid plenty of speculation over their futures.

Speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano made it clear that there was a chance for Reiss Nelson to leave the Emirates Stadium for the right price, but that neither the player nor the club were desperate to part ways.

Nelson has only been a backup player this season, despite looking decent when he’s been given the chance, and despite signing a new contract when his future was also in some doubt a year ago.

Elsewhere at Arsenal, both Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey have been linked with clubs in the Saudi Pro League, but Romano has played down those rumours for now, as it’s still too early to know for sure how much Saudi teams will spend this summer, or who their priority targets will be.

Thomas Partey to leave Arsenal?

Romano says Partey was a target for Saudi clubs last summer, but for now it looks like it’s quiet with both him and Jesus.

Arsenal transfer update from today’s Romano column

“Two Arsenal stars have also been linked with Saudi. Firstly, Gabriel Jesus has been mentioned as a target, but at the moment he is not talking to any Saudi clubs,” Romano said.

Friday afternoon brought with it some interesting news as far as Brazil’s squad for the Copa America is concerned, with Premier League stars from Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham all not making the cut this year.

Dorival Junior was always going to be without Neymar, but he’s made a number of bold moves in the hope of getting the Selecao back to the summit of South American football.

Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison left out of Brazil squad

Argentina have ruled the roost for a while now, and La Albiceleste will surely be favourites to land another title, however, fortune sometimes favours the brave, and Brazil’s supporters will certainly hope that’s the case.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from CaughtOffside columnist, Fabrizio Romano, Dorival Junior has decided not to pick Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison.

Inter’s Carlos Augusto, Juventus’ Gleison Bremer and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha also don’t make the cut.

In another bold move, the likes of Palmeiras ace, Endrick, and Girona’s superb wide man, Savinho, have both been picked, as has Gabriel Martinelli.

There will almost certainly be pundits ready to blast Dorival Junior for his squad selection, however, every squad, be that club or international, needs to go through a period of growth in order to improve.

Decisions such as those that have been made aren’t easy either, given the gravitas that those players will have in the Brazil dressing room.

What it does indicate is that it’s time to move on and bring through the next generation of Brazilian talent.

If Brazil also go on to win the Copa this summer there’ll be no criticism of the coach then, only praise.

It’s a very fine line of course, but at least Dorival Junior has the courage of his convictions and will live or die by his decisions.

Arsenal are prepared to cash in on Gabriel Jesus at the end of the season.

According to a report from TBR football, Arsenal have already informed that 27-year-old striker that they would be open to accepting a reasonable offer this summer.

Jesus has been quite underwhelming this season scoring just four goals in the league. Arsenal will need a better player at their disposal if they want to compete for major trophies consistently. They should look to invest in a prolific goalscorer and replacing Jesus should be one of their priorities this summer.

The 27-year-old has shown his quality in the Premier League over the years and he could prove to be a useful acquisition for most clubs.

Jesus has not been a regular starter for Arsenal in recent months and a permanent exit from the north London club would be ideal for him as well. He needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and he’s unlikely to get that opportunity at the north London club.

Arsenal ready to sell Gabriel Jesus.
Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal

Arsenal need to upgrade on Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal have been pushing for the league title since last season and they will want to win major trophies consistently. They need better players at their disposal in order to overtake the likes of Manchester City. Gabriel Jesus is undoubtedly a quality player who brings a lot to the table. The Brazilian is more than just a goalscorer but Arsenal already have a number of creative outlets in the team and the need a reliable finisher now. They should look to invest in a quality number nine instead of sticking with the former Manchester City striker.

The player is reportedly a target for Saudi Arabian clubs and it remains to be seen whether they come forward with a lucrative proposal for the Brazilian this summer. It will be interesting to see if Jesus is willing to move to Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career. He might feel that he is good enough to play for the top clubs across Europe and move to the Saudi pro league might be better suited later in his career.

It remains to be seen how the situation develops over the next few weeks.

Latest on Gabriel Jesus’ Arsenal future, and is Ivan Toney still a target?

I’ve had a lot of questions from fans about Gabriel Jesus’ future at Arsenal after some rumours that he could be sold for the right price this summer. Mikel Arteta, however, was quite clear when he spoke about this in his press conference – he said that Arsenal have absolutely not made any decision to sell Jesus.

From what I’m hearing, Arsenal have not made any communication to the player or to his agents about the intention to sell him in the summer transfer window, but this is not changing Arsenal’s strategy in terms of strikers. Arsenal want to bring in a new striker in the summer, and I’ve previously told you about their appreciation of players like Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko. We also have to remember that they like Alexander Isak at Newcastle, though that would be a complicated one.

So, Arsenal are looking for a striker, but it doesn’t mean that they have to sell Jesus. So at the moment the situation is quiet, they don’t want any distraction at this important moment of the season. We’ll see what happens in the summer, but at the moment the feeling is Arsenal could sell Eddie Nketiah instead, because there is interest from clubs in the Premier League, and also there was interest from Bundesliga clubs last year. So Nketiah could be on the move, but for Jesus at the moment it’s quiet.

It’s also quiet around Ivan Toney right now. Honestly, Arsenal and Chelsea never made proposals now or in January despite links – I’m told Toney’s situation will be assessed in the summer and it’s not one for May. Let’s see the strikers domino, and the player’s price tag. Brentford never wanted to make any discount for Toney, despite some talk of his price coming down significantly.

My thoughts on those surprise Pedri to Liverpool stories

Despite what has been reported elsewhere, I can guarantee that there is nothing between Pedri and Liverpool, or between Liverpool and Barcelona for Pedri – the situation is completely quiet. Pedri is really happy and always super committed to Barcelona, and he’s a crucial part of the project at the Nou Camp.

Of course, contract talks will have to take place in the next weeks and months – this will be one of the priorities for Barca after an agreement was reached for Pau Cubarsi (it’s just about the final details now); Pedri is another player who will speak to Barca about a new contract, talks will take place, but when PSG were interested in the past Pedri never wanted to entertain any talks because his full focus remains on Barcelona.

So, a new contract will be a topic really soon between Pedri and Barca, and it’s also important to say that Liverpool have different priorities – a new centre-back, and a new player in the offensive positions, so these are the areas to watch, more than a big signing in midfield.

I also wanted to clarify that, despite some speculation, it was never close for any other candidate to replace Xavi as Barcelona manager because president Joan Laporta always wanted to continue with Xavi, only Xavi was his priority. It’s not about money, it’s about project they wanted together with Xavi also to trust young players and keep going with their shared ideas. No other manager was really close to the Barca job in the recent months.

Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid nearly done, plus contact made over Argentine wonderkid

Kylian Mbappe

For Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid, everything is going in the right direction. We are just waiting now for the contract to be signed, and Real Madrid are preparing a special official announcement, so they are more than confident that it’s all going in the right direction.

But for Real Madrid it’s also always important to think about the future, and we know they have a special relationship with South America – there are many fantastic players there, not just in Brazil where Real have found talents like Vinicius, Rodrygo and Endrick, but also Uruguay with Federico Valverde.

Now, Real Madrid really like River Plate wonderkid Franco Mastantuono – a player they believe could be another Fede Valverde for them. He’s a different style of player, but Los Blancos believe he could have a similar impact. He’s also got similar values – he’s a super professional guy, just like Valverde, and of course he’s also a fantastic midfielder. He’s still only 16, but Real Madrid believe he’s very special and they’ve made contact in recent weeks to ask about his situation. He has a release clause worth €45m, which becomes €50m in the final days of the summer transfer window.

Let’s see what Real Madrid will do. At the moment there is still no proposal, but the interest is there, and Mastantuono is a player really appreciated by Real Madrid’s scouting department.

AC Milan crisis and managerial merry-go-round update

It’s been a difficult time for AC Milan and we saw some intriguing scenes this weekend as Milan’s ultras stayed silent for the entire game against Genoa and left ten minutes before the end of the game.

It’s understandable that the fans are not happy, as the fans want to see AC Milan performing on different level. Fans can’t be happy with this situation as they want titles. Stefano Pioli will be fired at the end of the season and fans also want an important manager for the new cycle. The managerial choice will be crucial for the relationship with the fans.

Julen Lopetegui had been linked with the Milan job, but is speaking to West Ham and he wants the job for sure, so he’s a candidate. Meanwhile, the situation with Ruben Amorim is quiet now, his decision will be made at the end of the season and not now so we have to see what he will decide. For sure, West Ham will fire David Moyes, but I’m hearing that Hansi Flick is not close to the job despite recent links.

Tosin Adarabioyo to Newcastle or Chelsea?

As previously reported, Newcastle are in the race for Tosin Adarabioyo, that’s for sure. Talks are taking place, he’s one of the names in their list for sure, though nothing is done or agreed yet.

Chelsea also called to be informed on Adarabioyo a few weeks ago but there’s nothing advanced and no proposal from them at this stage. Still, the defender will be leaving Fulham as a free agent, so it’s not surprising to see interest from multiple clubs.

My player of the season vote depends on who wins the title

We’re nearly at the point now where choosing the player of the season will be a topic of conversation, and I have some of my own candidates in mind, but for me it will also be crucial to see who wins the Premier League title – my vote will be based on that.

As of today, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer is the one who impressed me the most but Erling Haaland, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice also have a good chance to win as they deserve it. Let’s see who’s going make an impact in the final games, for my vote that’s a crucial step!

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus is reportedly a loan target for Brazilian side Palmeiras ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

The former Manchester City man started his career at Palmeiras, establishing himself as a real wonderkid before earning his big move to Europe with City in 2017.

Jesus has had a fine career in England, particularly at City where he won multiple titles, but he’s had some injury troubles in recent times that seem to have cast his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium into doubt.

According to CNN Brasil, Jesus is now being eyed for a loan move back to Palmeiras in what would be a bit of a surprise move, as the 27-year-old is surely still good enough to be playing at the highest level in Europe.

Jesus transfer: Will any big European clubs gamble on the injury-prone Arsenal man?

If the Palmeiras links are accurate, it could be a significant moment for Jesus, as it perhaps shows that his career at the very top level is now nearing an end, and if so, injuries will be a big part of that.

While there’s no doubting Jesus’ quality on his day, it’s been a difficult last year or so for him at Arsenal, as he’s rarely looked like even half the player he’s capable of being, while he’s spoken publicly about often playing through pain.

Having also missed a lot of games, it’s hard to imagine a lot of top European clubs being ready to gamble on the Brazil international at this stage, so perhaps he’d do well to return to his home club to try to revive his career.

Palmeiras continue to develop some truly outstanding young players, such as Endrick and Estevao Willian, so one imagines having an experienced figure like Jesus around to guide whoever comes through next could be really useful for them.
