Manchester United have reportedly discussed Brentford striker Ivan Toney internally, while his asking price has dropped to around £50million this summer.

Toney has just a year left on his Brentford contract, while his value will have fallen partly due to his lengthy betting ban and some injury troubles that have contributed to a general loss of form, though that hasn’t completely stopped Man Utd from taking a look at him, or so it would seem, according to The Athletic.

The England international could surely be a useful option for the Red Devils, though one imagines that price might actually need to fall further due to the presence of other quality young strikers in their squad in the form of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

That might not leave much room for Toney to come in and be a regular starter, even if there’d surely still be some value in having him as a rotation option in Erik ten Hag’s side.

Toney transfer: Do Man United need the Brentford striker?

Ivan Toney to Manchester United?

Toney could be useful to ensure there’s not too much pressure on Hojlund and Zirkzee at this relatively early stage in their careers, while the 28-year-old could also surely be a good and experienced player for the youthful duo to learn from.

It will be interesting to see how this saga develops, as clubs will surely swoop for Toney given that there’ll be an opportunity due to Brentford’s desire not to lose him on a free in a year’s time.

Toney has been linked with other big clubs in the past but those links have gone quieter in recent times.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank has admitted ‘you never know’ what might happen with Ivan Toney in the summer transfer market.

The 28-year-old striker has been the subject of much transfer speculation over recent months, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham heavily linked with his signature.

West Ham have also been urged to make a bid for Toney — who has 36 Premier League goals in 85 appearances to his name and was part of England’s squad for Euro 2024.

Despite Toney only managing four goals last season following his return from an eight-month ban, his 20-goal showing in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign remains strong in the memory.

As such, Brentford would love to keep hold of their star striker and have reportedly slapped a £60m fee on his head — although some outlets (including The Sun) have suggested the Bees are willing to slash their asking price.

Either way, Frank cannot say with any real certainty that the Bees will keep Toney away from the clutches of bigger powers this summer.

“You never know! He’s a Brentford player and I would love him to stay. It would give me a very positive challenge,” Frank told Sky Sports News on Saturday.

“I haven’t met a coach who doesn’t want as many good players as possible. Right now, he’s a Brentford player.

“He’s enjoying his time off and I’m happy, if he’s here with us I’ll be more than happy. A 20-goal goalscorer, there’s two things in that. It’s very good to have that in your team, and it makes him expensive!

“We’ve said before, I want to keep all my players, besides maybe five or six clubs in the world we’re a selling club – and if there’s the right bid which comes in, fine.”

The owner of Peterborough United, Darragh MacAnthony, has dismissed rumours that Ivan Toney’s high wage demands are putting off potential suitors as ‘nonsense’.

The 28-year-old striker has been the subject of much transfer speculation over recent months after scoring 36 goals in 85 Premier League appearances for Brentford over the last few seasons. The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham have been heavily linked with his signature.

Brentford are thought to be demanding £60m for Toney — who has 36 Premier League goals in 85 appearances to his name and was part of England’s squad for Euro 2024 — which is putting some potential suitors off.

Another rumoured sticking point has been Toney’s wage demands, with The Sun even reporting earlier this year that the forward could demand £250k per week from any new club.

However, speaking to talkSPORT recently, MacAnthony, who is the owner of Peterborough United — where Toney scored 49 goals in 94 appearances across all competitions between 2018 and 2020 — has dismissed those reports out of hand.

“Well that’s nonsense and I know that for a fact. I know his agent very well,” he said. “I speak to his agent every week because he’s got two of our players.”

MacAnthony also blasted rumours that Peterborough could be in line for a massive sell-on fee, should Brentford cash in on Toney this summer.

He added: “Sky came out and said I was going to get 15 to 20 million [pounds for Toney], I was like ‘what are you doing?’

“Every club we’re going to try and buy off thinks we’re loaded. We’ll probably end up, after Newcastle get paid their bit and everyone else, probably three, four, five million.”

West Ham have been urged to show ‘common sense’ by signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer.

The 28-year-old striker has been the subject of much transfer speculation over recent months, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham heavily linked with his signature.

Brentford are thought to be demanding £60m for Toney — who has 36 Premier League goals in 85 appearances to his name and was part of England’s squad for Euro 2024 — which is putting some potential suitors off.

However, Darragh MacAnthony — the owner of Toney’s former club, Peterborough United, where he scored 49 goals in 94 appearances across all competitions between 2018 and 2020 — believes West Ham’s David Sullivan may be waiting in the shadows to try a cut-price approach for Toney.

MacAnthony even believes it would be demonstrating a lack of ‘common sense’ if Sullivan and West Ham didn’t make an approach for the striker.

“I think for me, the betting man [in me] would say, knowing what David Sullivan is like at West Ham, he’s always liked Ivan Toney,” he told talkSPORT.

“He’ll try and basically get him at a dropped-down bargain offer from Brentford.

“And I know the Brentford people and they’d be like ‘no chance’. But I know Sullivan will try, and if he had any common sense he would.

“It would be the best signing West Ham have made in 12 years, instead of a foreign striker for £70million who couldn’t hit a barn door.”

Tottenham have been handed a big boost by Premier League rivals Brentford as the Bees have slashed their asking price for star striker Ivan Toney by 50%.

The England international is expected to move on from the Gtech Community Stadium during the current transfer window as the forward has just one year remaining on his contract and is not going to sign a new deal with the London club.

This situation attracted a lot of interest from Premier League clubs as Arsenal and Chelsea considered a move for Toney in January. However, Brentford placed a £100m price tag on the 28-year-old, which scared the London giants away.

The Daily Mail now reports that this asking price has now been halved with Brentford willing to accept less than £50m for Toney.

Tottenham and West Ham are believed to be the only two clubs left in the race for the Englishman and if that is true, this is a huge boost for both London clubs as they could acquire one of the Premier League’s best marksmen for a good price ahead of the new campaign.

Ivan Toney would be the perfect replacement for Harry Kane at Tottenham

Having lost Harry Kane last summer to Bayern Munich, Tottenham never replaced their greatest-ever goalscorer in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Toney would be a great option as he has a lot of similar qualities to his England teammate. The 28-year-old is a lethal goalscorer and is very intelligent in how he brings teammates into play with his ability to link things up.

The striker has proven over the last few years to be one of the best strikers in the Premier League and signing him for potentially less than £50m could prove to be one of the signings of the summer for Spurs if they decide to make a move for the Brentford star.

Arsenal are eyeing up two potential striker transfer targets in the form of Ajax’s Brian Brobbey and Lille’s Jonathan David as they could soon be set to sell Eddie Nketiah to Marseille.

Sources with a close understanding of the situation at Arsenal have informed CaughtOffside that although nothing is advanced yet for the Gunners to sign a new striker, they have Brobbey and David on their list as potential options, while they’re open to selling Nketiah for the right price.

Marseille want Nketiah as well as Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, and CaughtOffside understands that the Ligue 1 giants are preparing an opening offer in the region of €25m for the Arsenal striker.

How to buy tickets for the Euro 2024 final

Arsenal, however, do not intend to sell Nketiah on the cheap, and are understood to value him at closer to €35-40m, and they may feel they’re in a strong position to hold out for more money due to the long list of clubs interested in the 25-year-old this summer.

Nketiah transfer: Arsenal ace wanted by Marseille and Premier League clubs

As well as Marseille, CaughtOffside understands Arsenal’s Nketiah is also attracting interest from Brentford, Crystal Palace, Everton, West Ham United and Wolves.

Sources believe these clubs could also make moves for Nketiah soon, so Marseille may need to up their offer if they are serious about luring him to France.

Nketiah himself, meanwhile, is understood to be open to leaving the Emirates Stadium for a new challenge after falling down the pecking order and seeing a lot less playing time in Mikel Arteta’s side last season.

Being a homegrown player, AFC could make pure profit from selling Nketiah, so this is undoubtedly a deal that will appeal to them as they look to raise funds for players to come in, though it remains to be seen if they will end up prioritising Brobbey and David, or focus on other positions.

Tottenham Hotspur need to have a decent transfer window this summer if they’re to improve on their fifth placed finish last season.

The North Londoners looked odds on at one point to qualify for next season’s Champions League, but they were eventually beaten to the post by Aston Villa.

Just two points separated them from Unai Emery’s side at the end of the campaign, and with Spurs losing five of their last seven matches in the English top-flight, winning the other two against relegated Burnley and Sheffield United, they’ve really only got themselves to blame.

Tottenham prepare to cash in on Sergio Reguilon

That’s all in the past of course, and Ange Postecoglou will surely want everyone to be looking forward and willing to correct the mistakes of the past 12 months.

The squad started like a house on fire under the Australian and it wasn’t long before his name was heartily being sung from the stands, however, the longer the season went on, the more marked the drop off in performance became.

Tottenham are willing to sell Sergio Reguilon for just £10m
Tottenham are willing to sell Sergio Reguilon for just £10m

One player that can’t be blamed for Spurs’ malaise is Sergio Reguilon, as he was sent on loan to Man United and then Brentford for the entirety of the campaign.

Now Football Insider are reporting that the North Londoners are looking to cash in. That said, the outlet suggest a fee of just £10m will be enough to prise him from Tottenham, who paid a whopping £32m for him back in 2020.

It isn’t clear at this point if there are any interested parties, even though they might consider Reguilon as a bargain signing.

At 27, it’s generally thought to be about the time a player peaks, and with years still ahead of him in the game, £10m is peanuts.

Any sale would get his wages off the books too, and would leave Tottenham in the enviable position of being able to utilise those funds elsewhere.

Arsenal are focusing their efforts on finalising the details of the Riccardo Calafiori transfer deal, while there could also be some other deals in the works soon, CaughtOffside understands.

The Gunners are in talks with Bologna and with Calafiori’s agents to fully understand the structure of the payments for the Italy international, while sources close to the situation have also informed CaughtOffside that Jakub Kiwior’s name has come up in conversations.

Bologna have an interest in possibly signing Kiwior in a separate deal, while the Poland international is also wanted by Inter Milan, CaughtOffside understands, with the Nerazzuri asking for information on the player, who may now struggle to play as often once Mikel Arteta also has Calafiori to choose from in that inverted left-back role.

It remains to be seen precisely when the final details of the Calafiori to Arsenal move can be finalised, but things seem to be at an advanced stage, and AFC fans will hope there are no late issues that see the deal collapse.

Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal could be edging closer

Calafiori transfer edging closer for Arsenal – new striker next?

Once Calafiori is done, Arsenal are also understood to be eyeing up a number of striker targets to come in next, with Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres one of the main names high up on their list, as well as Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez could also be one to watch, though he also has long-standing interest from other big names like Tottenham and Napoli.

Arsenal would do well to bring in Gyokeres in particular after his superb form for Sporting last season, while the north London giants might also do well to consider strengthening in midfield after that.

Mikel Merino is on Arsenal’s radar in that area of the pitch, as Fabrizio Romano exclusively told CaughtOffside for today’s Daily Briefing column.

Tottenham are keeping an eye on the striker market throughout this summer with Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and Brentford’s Ivan Toney viewed as the ideal players to fill the role in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

The Australian coach lost his main goalscorer in Harry Kane last summer before the Premier League got underway and the North London club’s hierarchy failed to find their new coach a replacement.

That forced the former Celtic boss to play Son Heung-min or Richarlison in the number nine spot, which could also be an option for the 2024/25 campaign.

Football Insider report that Tottenham could play their South Korean captain through the middle during the upcoming season and sign a wideman to take his place on the wings. The same outlet states that Wolves’ Perdo Neto and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze are options for the North London side but no official proposals have been submitted.

Most Tottenham fans would prefer to see their club sign a proper number nine and Spurs have their eyes on two targets should they go down that route.

Will Son Heung-min play as a number nine for Tottenham this season?
Will Son Heung-min play as a number nine for Tottenham this season?

Tottenham monitoring Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and Brentford’s Ivan Toney

Both Gimenez and Toney are great options for Tottenham but both are different profiles and at different points in their careers.

The Mexican striker is a long-term target for Spurs and impressed last season in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord, scoring 23 goals and producing a further six assists across 30 games in the Dutch top flight.

The forward is also only 23 and would have more room to develop under Postecoglou.

As for Toney, the England international is an established Premier League goalscorer and would need no time to adjust at Tottenham.

The 28-year-old is an elite marksman and is exactly what Spurs need as he is also brilliant at bringing other players into a game. Brentford are open to selling their biggest star this summer as he has just one year remaining on his current contract, which could open up a path for Tottenham.
