Unceremoniously dumped by Erik ten Hag at Man United, former number one, David de Gea, may appear to have found himself a new club.

The Spaniard is likely still smarting from his treatment by the Dutchman, however, as Sky Sports reported, though club and custodian had been in contract discussions for several months, no new terms were ever offered.

That might have something to do with his £375,000 per week salary, via Capology, which would’ve put him in the highest bracket of earners at the club.

Compare that to the £120,000 per week (Capology) that the Red Devils are paying new custodian, Andre Onana, and the five year age gap that the Cameroonian has on the 32-year-old, and it makes United’s decision, however controversial it may seem on the surface, perfectly sensible. Both from a playing and business perspective.

The issue for de Gea is whether to find a new employer where he will continue to be the first choice between the posts, or accept that the best he can hope for in future is to be a number two.

The latter scenario would appear to be where he’s at presently given that Sky Germany (h/t Daily Mirror) have reported that de Gea is ready to replace Yann Sommer at Bayern Munich, and become the understudy to Manuel Neuer.

A deal hasn’t yet been concluded but he has apparently given the green light to the move, and with a couple of weeks left of the transfer window, there’s still time to get the transfer over the line.

It’s sure to be a big summer transfer wise for Leicester City, whether they remain in the Premier League or drop down into the Championship after the final games of the season.

As things stand, the Foxes have to beat West Ham United on Sunday to have any hope whatsoever of staying up.

If they manage to fulfil their end of the bargain, then they need both Leeds United and Everton to lose their games against Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth respectively.

It’s a tall order and would be a sad footnote for a side that were Premier League champions just seven years ago.

In any event, it would be remiss of the board of the club, Dean Smith and his staff to not be having discussions about transfer targets given that the summer transfer window opens for business in a little under three weeks time.

Yann Sommer in action for Borussia Monchengladbach

To that end, it’s being reported that Leicester are a possible destination for Bayern Munich custodian, Yann Sommer.

According to Kicker (h/t Sportbuzzer), Sommer is almost certain to leave the Bavarian giants thanks to the return to fitness and form of usual Bayern No.1, Manual Neuer.

The 34-year-old was only signed in January as cover for the German international after he sustained an injury on holiday, but has clearly not impressed the club’s paymasters enough to keep him on as a back-up to Neuer.

Whether a stint in the Championship would be of interest to the keeper isn’t clear, but from Leicester’s point of view, they have to remain in the market for experienced players who can get them straight back up again should relegation be confirmed on Sunday.

Reports suggest that Bayern Munich would have preferred to sign Kasper Schmeichel over Yann Sommer back in January amid the injury to Manuel Neuer.

This is according to Kicker, who say that the club wanted Schmeichel as a short-term fix for the absence of Manuel Neuer, who broke his leg on a skiing trip in December, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

The outlet goes on to suggest that now-departed coach Julian Nagelsmann wanted a keeper that could speak German and with Yann Sommer a Swiss international and also having been at Borussia Monchengladbach for nine seasons, the club ended up signing the 34-year old for €8million.

Since signing, Sommer has featured in every league game for the Bavarians, keeping three clean sheets in his 14 matches in the Bundesliga.

Sommer has played 20 times in all competitions for Bayern since joining in the winter window

Despite the club bringing in the former Monchengladbach man for a cheap fee, the situation that will arise upon Neuer’s return from injury will be an interesting one, as to whether Sommer will accept a backup role to the German who is still at the top of his game aged 37.

Either way, a goalkeeping department of Sommer and Neuer is not bad depth in that position, however you can’t help but feel that bringing in Schmeichel from Nice on a deal until the end of the campaign may have been a better business decision from the Bayern hierarchy in order for them to avoid the decision of having to decide who takes the club’s No.1 spot going into next season.

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing up a move for the Switzerland international Yann Sommer.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper joined Bayern Munich during the January transfer window, and he has established himself as a key player for the German club.

First-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is currently sidelined with an injury and it will be interesting to see if he is allowed to regain his position as an automatic starter when he returns next season.

Sommer has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga over a number of seasons and he will be hoping to play regularly. If Bayern Munich cannot provide him with that opportunity next season, it would be better for the 34-year-old to leave the club in the summer.

Manchester United are looking to bring an upgrade on David De Gea and Sommer has emerged as an option according to the Telegraph.

The Spanish goalkeeper is not an ideal fit for Erik ten Hag’s style of football. The Dutchman prefers goalkeepers with better distribution skills and David De Gea has made quite a few errors with his passing from the back this season.

Yann Sommer to Manchester United?

Furthermore, the 32-year-old goalkeeper is nearing the end of his contract at Old Trafford, and he is yet to sign an extension. He could leave the club as a free agent in the summer, and Manchester United will have to start planning for a future without him.

While Sommer is 34, he could still be a quality option for the Red Devils in the short term. The opportunity to showcase his qualities in the Premier League could be a tempting option for the Swiss international.

Bayern Munich have reached an agreement with Borussia Monchengladbach for the transfer of goalkeeper Yann Sommer who was being lined up by Manchester United for a summer move.

The German champions were in the market for a goalkeeper due to Manuel Neuer injuring his leg in a skiing accident following the World Cup and according to Florian Plettenburg, Bayern have now got their man in a deal worth €10m (€8.5m initial fee + €1.5m in add-ons).

The Swiss international only wanted to move to Munich and will sign a contract at the Allianz Arena until 2025 states Sky Sport’s Plettenberg.

The 34-year-old was out of contract with Monchengladbach at the end of the season, therefore, this was the German club’s last chance to sell the goalkeeper.

This might come as a blow to Man United as according to ESPN, the Manchester club were also interested in Sommer and were planning a move for the 34-year-old this summer.

There were questions over David de Gea’s long-term future at Old Trafford heading into the summer transfer window but it now looks like the Spaniard will be staying at Old Trafford, reports the Telegraph; therefore, missing out on Sommer is not a disaster for the Premier League giants but they still need to sort out their second choice goalkeeper, and maybe their first as well.

Hello and welcome to my Daily Briefing – every morning I will round up the most important news in football, providing you with exclusive insight, inside stories and everything you need to know for the day ahead – click here to donate a subscription!

Arsenal

I’m told that nothing will be decided now for Declan Rice, also because the player is not leaving in January as things stand. But for sure Arsenal have an interest, as has been reported, and they discussed Declan internally. He’s appreciated by many clubs including Chelsea. But again, it will take time to see where Declan will go; no discussions have taken place on the player’s side yet.

Ben Jacobs recently stated in his column here that Rice’s transfer valuation may have fallen to around the £70-75million mark.

Facundo Torres reveals: “Orlando confirmed to me that there was contact with Arsenal, but then I left for the World Cup… we will see now how it goes. I would love to play in Europe. It’s a dream I’ve had since I was a kid.”

William Saliba: “I am so happy here at Arsenal. The club is speaking with my agent and me on new contract. The only thing I can do is focus on my football, but I am really so happy here.”

Talks are ongoing with Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba. All discussions are very positive but it will be time to get deals signed this year. Timing is up to club and player, could be any moment or months.

Aston Villa

Official, completed. Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Chicago Fire for the permanent transfer of the Colombian striker Jhon Duran. The talented 19-year-old has signed a long term contract as the deal is confirmed. Villa will pay $18m guaranteed fee plus $4m potential add-ons.

Atalanta

Many important clubs are monitoring Merih Demiral as Turkish centre back has always attracted interest in the last few years after his performances with Atalanta. He’s one to watch this year as clubs are informed on the conditions of a potential transfer.

Barcelona

Memphis Depay in action for Barcelona

Memphis Depay’s lawyer Sebastien Ledure: “There are no negotiations ongoing for Memphis to join Inter. I can deny all these links — it’s not a possibility we are discussing.”

My understanding is that Depay will leave Barca in January, as Atletico Madrid remain interested.

Franck Kessie’s future depends now on Barcelona. Discussions took place with intermediaries on a possible swap deal with Marcelo Brozovic over last days, but it’s up to Barca and Xavi.
