Tottenham are keeping an eye on the striker market throughout this summer with Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and Brentford’s Ivan Toney viewed as the ideal players to fill the role in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

The Australian coach lost his main goalscorer in Harry Kane last summer before the Premier League got underway and the North London club’s hierarchy failed to find their new coach a replacement.

That forced the former Celtic boss to play Son Heung-min or Richarlison in the number nine spot, which could also be an option for the 2024/25 campaign.

Football Insider report that Tottenham could play their South Korean captain through the middle during the upcoming season and sign a wideman to take his place on the wings. The same outlet states that Wolves’ Perdo Neto and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze are options for the North London side but no official proposals have been submitted.

Most Tottenham fans would prefer to see their club sign a proper number nine and Spurs have their eyes on two targets should they go down that route.

Will Son Heung-min play as a number nine for Tottenham this season?

Tottenham monitoring Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and Brentford’s Ivan Toney

Both Gimenez and Toney are great options for Tottenham but both are different profiles and at different points in their careers.

The Mexican striker is a long-term target for Spurs and impressed last season in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord, scoring 23 goals and producing a further six assists across 30 games in the Dutch top flight.

The forward is also only 23 and would have more room to develop under Postecoglou.

As for Toney, the England international is an established Premier League goalscorer and would need no time to adjust at Tottenham.

The 28-year-old is an elite marksman and is exactly what Spurs need as he is also brilliant at bringing other players into a game. Brentford are open to selling their biggest star this summer as he has just one year remaining on his current contract, which could open up a path for Tottenham.

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has apologised to his Spurs teammate Son Heung-min for making a racist joke about his home country South Korea while speaking in an interview whilst away with Uruguay.

The 26-year-old has been with the North London club since 2022 and has known Son in all that time. The South Korean star is Tottenham’s captain and is one player who deserves a little more respect than the others in the Spurs dressing room.

Nevertheless, that did not stop Bentancur from making a racist comment about the forward’s home country of South Korea as the Uruguay star stated that people from the Asian nation “all look the same”.

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out said on Wednesday it had received a “significant number” of complaints regarding the South American’s comments, while Tottenham also put out a statement to condemn Bentancur’s behaviour.

The Tottenham midfielder has since apologised for his comments posting a message to Son on social media, which read via The Guardian: “Sonny brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke.”

Son has since responded to Bentancur’s apology and has admitted that he has already spoken to his Tottenham teammate about the incident. The South Korean star has stated that it is already behind them and that he is looking forward to seeing the Uruguay star in pre-season.

“I’ve spoken with Lolo [Bentancur]. He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised,” the Tottenham captain has said via The Guardian.

“Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all. We’re past this, we’re united, and we will be back together in pre-season to fight for our club as one.”

Son Heung-min, the captain of Tottenham, has urged supporters and the team to unite together in support of Ange Postecoglou.

Visibly incensed, Postecoglou declared after Spurs’ 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday that the lead-up to the game had demonstrated that the team’s foundations were more “fragile” than he had initially believed.

This seemed to be directed at supporters who were undecided about their team’s victory.

The outcome ruined Tottenham’s ambitions of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League again, and guaranteed that Man City would defeat Arsenal, Spurs’ rivals in north London, to win the league title if they defeat West Ham at home on Sunday.

Son wants the players and fans to unite and support the manager as he feels Postecoglou is the right man to bring success to the club.

“We should understand that this is the gaffer’s first year and he has brought a lot of positive attitude and different football,” Son told the Evening Standard.

“I know it’s early to talk about it, but we need to prepare much better next season because I still believe he can bring a lot of success to the club.

Son Heung-min Ange Postecoglou Tottenham
Tottenham captain wants the fans and players to support the manager.

“I’m in. I like the way he wants to play. I experienced this for the first time.

“Everybody — the club, the players, also the fans — everybody has to step up, because we have to be all together in this. He’s definitely shown he can bring success to the club.”

Son has a leading role at the club now after the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer.

The South Korean international has lead the Tottenham attack this season and he has been in fine form for the North London club.

Postecoglou is the right man to take Tottenham forward

However, he missed a one on one opportunity against Man City which was a huge surprise for the fans, more for the Arsenal fans.

Postecoglou has made an impression in his first season at the club and played an attacking brand of football, different to what was played under previous managers Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho.

He needs to be supported in the transfer market now as he intends to make Tottenham a force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham were defeated 2-0 by Man City on Tuesday night but they could have earned a draw had Son Heung-min converted a massive chance for the North London side.

With Pep Guardiola’s men 1-0 ahead, the South Korean star pounced on a Manuel Akanji mistake with 86 minutes on the clock to go through one-on-one with Stefan Ortega in the Man City goal.

However, Son missed the chance and with that went Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League as Erling Haaland would convert a penalty just moments later.

Fans of the Gunners would not have believed it as the Tottenham captain is a clinical finisher and normally puts those chances away.

The popularity of the Premier League continues to ensure that new territories are invested in the English top-flight, both financially and actually.

Summer tours across the world are now the norm for most of the top teams in the division, with thousands of overseas supporters getting to see their heroes up close and personal.

Son’s popularity key to South Korean broadcast rights

It isn’t just on the pitch for friendlies where the players are seen on planet football of course.

Fans will stay up till all hours to watch on TV, and according to Sport Business (subscription required), it appears that Coupang, an e-commerce company, are closing in on a deal for the rights to show Premier League and FA Cup games in South Korea.

That can only be as a result of the popularity of one of their star players, Tottenham Hotspur ace Son Heung-min, and if the deal is concluded successfully, it will be the first time that those media rights have both been sold together.

Tottenham are reportedly confident that they can agree a new contract with their captain Son Heung-min once the current campaign reaches its conclusion.

The South Korean star has been at Spurs since 2015 but his current contract would see him depart the North London outfit in 2025. The forward has been a major player for the Premier League side over the last decade, scoring 161 goals and assisting a further 83 across 403 appearances.

Son became Tottenham’s captain ahead of this season, following the exits of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.

All this highlights the importance of the 31-year-old to Spurs and the London club want to offer him a new deal.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham chiefs have held talks with the South Korean international and all parties are now expecting to reach an agreement once the current campaign comes to an end.

Son is said to be focussing on having a good end to the season and hopes to help Tottenham qualify for the Champions League.

New Son Heung-min deal is a smart move from Tottenham

Tieing down Son to a new deal is a smart move for Tottenham as the forward is still the club’s best goalscorer.

The South Korean star also has a big presence in the Spurs dressing room and provides it with some experience given that Ange Postecoglou is building a young team at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A new deal will likely be a short-term contract as the Tottenham captain is turning 32 this year.

However, Son is still having a big impact on the pitch and his 16 goals this season highlights this. With Ange Postecoglou’s team expected to get better for the 2024/25 campaign, the 31-year-old will be hoping to do even better next season.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 in the North London derby to spark nerves in the Arsenal squad.

The Gunners stormed into a 3-0 lead in the first half and have tried to manage the game throughout the second.

However, David Raya would hand the hosts a lifeline when he kicked the ball to Cristian Romero to pull one back for Spurs.

Tottenham have now grabbed a second from the penalty spot as Declan Rice fouled Ben Davies in the box. Son stepped up and smashed the ball to Raya’s right, setting up a nervy end to the match for Arsenal.

Tottenham and Arsenal will go head-to-head on Sunday in what is set to be one of the biggest North London derbies in history and Spurs captain Son Heung-min has made a surprising admission ahead of the clash.

The Gunners go into the clash knowing that anything but a win could be detrimental to their Premier League title hopes as they currently lead Man City by one point, with the Manchester club having a game in hand.

As for Tottenham, Ange Postecoglu’s team have their own goal and need to win the North London Derby to chase down Aston Villa for the final spot in next season’s Champions League. Spurs are six points behind the Birmingham club with two games in hand, while the goal difference is also very close between the pair.

With both teams needing to win, this makes Sunday’s derby a massive game and ahead of the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs captain Son Heung-min has stated that his team will not change their style when playing Arsenal, which comes as a surprise given the Gunners’ recent form.

Ange Postecoglou has brought exciting football to Tottenham

Tottenham will not change their style for free-scoring Arsenal

“We’re still a little bit inexperienced because we’re building a young team, some of them are in their first season in the Premier League,” Son said ahead of the Arsenal game via The Standard. “So look, we can test ourselves against one of the biggest teams in Europe and the Premier League. But also in the world.

“So I think it’s very important the way we play: stick to our [style of] play, stick to our game. I think it’s a very, very good test. As I said, it’s against one of the best teams in the world so it’s perfect [for us]. You want to always have good competition and you always want to face the best teams in the world.”

Postecoglou was never going to change his style of play when facing Arsenal but it is a system that Mikel Arteta’s team can definetly exploit.

It would be a surprise if Tottenham didn’t accommodate Arsenal a little as the Gunners’ wingers have the potential to cause Spurs huge problems given the way their full-backs play.

With six games of their Premier League season left to play, Ange Postecoglou still has a great chance of getting Tottenham Hotspur back into the Champions League next season.

Aston Villa’s win over Arsenal at the weekend not only dented the Gunners hopes of landing the title for the first time in 20 years, but it kept them three points ahead of the Lilywhites, albeit with one more game played.

Unai Emery’s side also have the distraction of the Europa Conference League which could well play right into Spurs’ hands in the final few English top-flight games.

Ange Postecoglou could drop a Tottenham regular

Villa actually play twice more before Tottenham’s next game – a North London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

It could mean that Postecoglou’s side go into that game some nine points behind the team directly above them, in what would then become a must-win match for both Spurs and Arsenal.

The atmosphere will be insane, but one player that might not get to experience it is January loan signing Timo Werner.

Although he’s done reasonably well since signing from RB Leipzig – WhoScored note he has two goals and three assists in 784 minutes of Premier League action – Jay Bothroyd can’t seen him getting a game when Richarlison returns.

Richarlison's return could cause problems for Ange Postecoglou.
Tottenham star Richarlison will soon return for Ange Postecoglou.

“I feel like, if Richarlison is back, Son will go to the left, he (Werner) will be out of the team,” he said on the The Optus Sport Football Podcast.

“And I think they will be better going forward because then you’ve got some players that you can play link-up play with, that you can work with.”

It’s a harsh assessment, but the manager isn’t likely to keep the Brazilian benched if the team need to score goals to bring them closer to Villa in the final stages.

Werner has been good but not great and when it comes down to it, the Lilywhites can’t afford to have any passengers in the final few matches.

The other question mark of course is whether any permanent move in the summer could be curtailed because of what may happen over the course of the next few weeks.

Tottenham Hotspur had a week to get ready for the visit to Fulham, as they were fueled by the momentum from their tremendous victory against Aston Villa.

Fulham came out of the block firing against Spurs, leaving the visitors stunned. The Cottagers eventually took the lead late in the first half when Antonee Robinson provided an exceptional cross into the box, and Brazilian forward Rodrigo Muniz capitalised on the chance, beating the Spurs defence to calmly place the ball past Guglielmo Vicario, securing the lead for Fulham.

Just four minutes into the second half, Sasa Lukic doubled Fulham’s lead with a fantastic finish from a Timothy Castagne cross. Then, 12 minutes later, Fulham extended their lead even further as Muniz scored his second goal of the game, effectively putting the match out of Tottenham’s reach.

Son heavily critical as Tottenham disappoint against Fulham

Son Heung-min’s unusually intense reaction to Tottenham’s disappointing performance under Ange Postecoglou’s management suggests a deep sense of frustration.

As a typically composed and rational figure, his scathing assessment, implying that Spurs’ display was a betrayal to the entire Premier League, highlights the severity of the situation. Son’s implication that the team displayed a lack of fight when trailing underscores the gravity of their performance.

He told Sky Sports: “We haven’t given everything, including me, which is really painful. We have to bounce back. We cannot just give up in games. I am devastated, disappointed, frustrated. As captain of this club, I want to apologise to the Tottenham fans, they don’t deserve that result, they don’t deserve that performance.”

“Everybody has to come back firing. You go to the national team, you represent your country, but also you have to think about it, you are representing Spurs and the Premier League.”
