Brighton playmaker Pascal Groß has agreed on a deal to return to his native Germany with Borussia Dortmund, according to reports.

Groß has been a key figure for the Seagulls since their promotion to the Premier League in 2017, registering 75 direct goal involvements (30g/45a) in 228 top-flight appearances. Last season, the 33-year-old finished behind only Ollie Watkins (13) and Cole Palmer (11) on 10 Premier League assists.

However, Groß — who has eight caps for Germany and was part of the Die Mannschaft side that reached the Euro 2024 quarter-finals on home soil this summer, playing 45 minutes of their opening 5-1 win over Scotland — has entered the final year of his contract at the American Express Stadium.

That means Brighton must act now if they’re to receive a fee for the midfielder, rather than losing him for free next summer.

Dortmund agree terms with Groß

Pascal Gross of Germany reacts during the international friendly match between Germany and Ukraine at Max-Morlock-Stadion on June 03, 2024 in Nuremberg, Germany.

According to Sky Sports Germany (via Bulinews), 2023/24 Champions League finalists Dortmund have now reached an agreement on personal terms with Groß that will see him sign a two-year deal with an extra option year.

All that is left now is for the two clubs to agree on a transfer fee and while there is yet to be a concrete figure reported, it’s understood Brighton value Groß in the region of €8-10m (£6.7m-8.5m).

Groß last played in the Bundesliga back in 2016/17 for Ingolstadt and has six goals and 12 assists to his name in 70 appearances in the competition, which also includes a previous spell with Hoffenheim.

Brighton have taken the lead against Tottenham, with Pascal Gross converting from the penalty spot.

The penalty was awarded after Danny Welbeck was fouled in the box.

Rodrigo Bentancur lost possession near the edge of the Spurs’ box as Spurs tried to play out from the back.

Gross spinned it into Buonanotte, who then played in Welbeck but the former Arsenal man is brought down by Micky Van de Ven.

In the absence of Joao Pedro, Pascal Gross stepped up and confidently dispatched the penalty, sending Tottenham goalkeeper Vicario the wrong way to give Brighton the lead.

Bryan Mbeumo gave his side the lead from the penalty spot before Brighton levelled just moments later through Pascal Groß.

With just three points separating both clubs a win for Brentford could see them leapfrog their opposition into eighth place.

It looked like they would do just that after Vitaly Janelt was dragged down in the box by a Brighton player giving the referee no choice but to point to the spot, Mbeumo calmly dispatched.

However, the lead didn’t last long as Groß rifled a strike from the edge of the area into the bottom corner just minutes later.

Is Antoine Griezmann really a target for Manchester United?

There have been many rumours during the international break about the future of Antoine Griezmann. I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about him since there were some reports in Spain linking Griezmann with Manchester United.

While it’s true that Griezmann has a release clause at Atletico Madrid, but it’s also the case that the player is only focused on Atletico Madrid – he is in love with the club. He already left once in the past, joining Barcelona in 2019, and then he wanted to return. Now he’s back and he has a great relationship with manager Diego Simeone and his teammates – his idea is not to change clubs in January, there is no plan at all to leave, there is absolutely nothing going on with Manchester United.

And as I’ve previously reported on Griezmann, back in June he had the possibility to accept a life-changing contract proposal to move to Saudi Arabia, but he wasn’t interested because he only wanted to stay at Atletico Madrid. So it’s not just Man United, there is no desire for Griezmann to leave for any club, he wants to stay at Atletico Madrid.

Staying with Man United, there’s no concrete update yet on Donny van de Beek, but he is one player who is very much expected to leave in January. United and Van de Beek will find a solution for sure, though there is no clarity yet about a specific club, it’s still too early.

Chelsea still backing Mykhaylo Mudryk despite Khvicha Kvaratskhelia links

I’m aware there have been some stories about Chelsea having an interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with reports that he’s a player they really like, but I wouldn’t read too much into this for now. Of course we can all see Kvaratskhelia is a superb talent – he’s been a joy to watch for Napoli and so I think it’s normal to see stories like this.

Also with Napoli there is the reality that they could be forced to sell Victor Osimhen in the summer – I’ve reported on interest in him several times recently, and there’s been no progress on a new contract with Napoli, so they will hope to keep Kvaratskhelia if they lose another of their important players.

A lot can change in football and it’s too early to know for sure what will happen, but my understanding remains that it’s not a concrete thing with Chelsea so far.

In other news…

Pablo Fornals – There have been some surprise links between Pablo Fornals and Barcelona, with the West Ham midfielder supposedly mentioned as an option to cover for the injured Gavi. Still, I’m not aware of concrete talks for Fornals so far, there’s still nothing decided in terms of new midfielder; as Deco said, the situation is still very quiet. Barcelona’s priority is to use funds on Financial Fair Play to register Vitor Roque.

Pascal Gross – The Brighton star is a player Eintracht Frankfurt really like, as has been reported. Eintracht love Gross, but they also know nothing will happen in January, he’s a dream target for June but very difficult as Gross is very happy at Brighton and there are no problems between Brighton and Gross, at all.

Jose Mourinho – Al Hilal wanted Jose Mourinho in June 2023, but he decided to respect AS Roma and so he turned down the proposal. He’s now suggested he will manage in Saudi Arabia one day, but it’s too early for anything concrete, as nothing will happen until at least next summer.

Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross is seemingly well liked by Eintracht Frankfurt, according to Fabrizio Romano as he spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing column.

The 32-year-old has been a key performer for Brighton in recent times and it’s hardly surprising that there’s now interest in him, with Romano admitting that Eintracht Frankfurt really like him as a player.

Still, the transfer news expert has made it clear that a January deal looks complicated for Gross, with the German side making him a dream target for the summer instead.

Discussing Gross’ situation, Romano said: “Pascal Gross – The Brighton star is a player Eintracht Frankfurt really like, as has been reported. Eintracht love Gross, but they also know nothing will happen in January, he’s a dream target for June but very difficult as Gross is very happy at Brighton and there are no problems between Brighton and Gross, at all.”

Brighton have had to cope with selling a number of their star players in recent times, with Ben White and Leandro Trossard both moving to Arsenal in recent times, while Moises Caicedo and Robert Sanchez both joined Chelsea in the summer, and Alexis Mac Allister moved to Liverpool.

Losing Gross would be another blow, especially as one imagines there’ll also be plenty of interest in exciting talents like Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson.

Eintracht Frankfurt are reportedly interested in signing Pascal Gross.

That’s according to a recent report from Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, who claims the Brighton and Hove Albion star is wanted in the Bundesliga.

With just 18 months left on his contract and no talk of a renewal just yet, Gross, 32, is attracting some high-profile European interest.

Although the 32-year-old is one of Roberto De Zerbi’s most reliable players, with the Seagulls’ policy quite obviously centred around developing future stars, the summer may be the best time to cash in on the German.

The midfielder may also jump at the chance to return to his homeland having left FC Ingolstadt nearly seven years ago.

The potential obstacles Frankfurt must first overcome include the player’s valuation, as well as his salary, which according to Spotrac, is around £65,000-per week.

Nevertheless, with the German’s contract running further down with every passing day, Frankfurt officials will continue to keep a close eye on the player’s situation.

After Brighton had suffered defeats to Chelsea in the Carabao cup (1-0), Aston Villa in the Premier League (6-1) and a draw after going 2-0 down to Marseille in midweek, Brighton managed a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Amex.

Brighton have had a poor few weeks, especially defensively with mistakes costing them in recent times. With a few injuries in the squad, a few changes were made to freshen up the side, with the likes of Simon Adingra, Carlos Baleba and Igor Julio coming in. These changes gave Brighton a different energy than they have had in recent weeks, and there was definently chances for the Seagulls to beat Liverpool.

Read on for our Brighton player ratings, and who stood out for the Seagulls…

Bart Verbruggen – 6.5 – Made two saves inside the box, and played 44 successful passes showing his importance for Brighton in build up. Not much he could do about the goals, one being a penalty.

Solly March – 7.5 – March played further back than usual, playing as a left back but with license to go forward and overlap Mitoma. Got the assist from a freekick for Lewis Dunk’s goal and made a whopping six tackles.

Igor Julio – 6 – Looked to be suffering from a knock throughout the game, and was subbed off in the 63rd minute. Still managed two key passes from defense and contributed well for Brighton in possession.

Lewis Dunk – 7.5 – Dunk scored the important equaliser for Brighton, and made one key pass from the back. Dunk was also very solid defensively with two aerial duels won out of three, three out of three ground duels won, three clearances, one block and one tackle.

Joel Veltman – 6 – Veltman made a few clearances and a tackle but had the likes of Nunez drifting over to his side and cause him problems. He only made 17 passes (14 successful) with an 82% pass accuracy, and he also lost both of his aerial duels.

Pascal Gross – 6 – Gross looked to drop between the central defenders in this game, to help with build up play, he had a few poor passes in central areas losing possession 10 times, but Gross did manage one key pass and a pass accuracy of 89% despite playing six long balls.

Carlos Baleba – 7.5 – Baleba added a much needed presence in midfield, covering a lot of ground and getting stuck in. He made two blocks, three interceptions and two tackles, along with four out of four long balls completed.

Kaoru Mitoma – 5.5 – Not the most impactful game from Mitoma we have seen, only managing one shot which was off target and one cross. Much more went down the opposite side for Brighton.

Joao Pedro – 6.5 – Pedro was involved, making two key passes and had two shots (one blocked and one off target). However he also lost possession quite a few times in dangerous deeper areas with his back to goal, losing possession 11 times.

Simon Adingra – 8 – The real bright spark for Brighton, won the ball back and scored for their first goal, and was direct at every chance down his flank. Completed three out of nine dribbles attempted, had two shots on target, completed two out of two long balls and of course scored his goal.

Evan Ferguson – 5 – Wasn’t very involved and was taken off after 60 minutes. Only had 24 touches, losing possession six times and only having the one shot off target, quiet day for Ferguson.

Subs: Danny Welbeck 6, Jan Paul van Hecke 5, Ansu Fati N/A.

Though it came very late in the second half, Joao Pedro’s spot-kick looked to have earned Brighton and Hove Albion a vital point against Marseille in the Europa League.

The French giants had raced into a two-goal first-half lead, both goals coming inside two minutes.

The Seagulls managed to stop the rot and managed to get themselves back into the game thanks to a second-half strike from Pascal Gross.

With time running out, Joao Pedro was the calmest man on the pitch to equalise for Roberto De Zerbi’s team.

After conceding two in two minutes during the first half of their Europa League tie against Marseille, Brighton and Hove Albion held firm until Pascal Gross gave them a glimmer of hope after the break.

Roberto De Zerbi would be forgiven for thinking that lightning was striking twice after the two quickfire goals brought memories of the weekend’s humbling at Aston Villa back.

Fortunately, the Italian galvanised his side who began to gain a foothold in the match the longer it went on.

The Seagulls got their reward in the 54th minute as Pascal Gross fired home from a Kaoru Mitoma delivery.

After being well beaten by a dynamic and exciting Brighton and Hove Albion side, Man United manager, Erik ten Hag, offered the lamest of excuses for another poor performance.

For the first time in the Red Devils illustrious history, they’ve lost three of their opening five matches in a season, and it shouldn’t be forgotten that they were lucky to win the other two.

“It was not our day,” the Dutchman said after the match, supplementing that quote with more cliches.

It was painful to watch, and in the space of a few games in 2023/24, ten Hag has gone from hero to zero.

The last thing he needs is to be playing Bayern Munich in the Champions League as United’s next match.
