At the back end of the 2023/24 Premier League season, Crystal Palace under Oliver Glasner were one of the form teams in the English top-flight.

In the final seven games of the campaign, the Eagles won six and drew one, and picked off some big names in the process.

Liverpool were downed 1-0 at Anfield, Man United lost 4-0 at Selhurst Park, whilst both West Ham and Aston Villa were hit for five in South London. Newcastle and Wolves also succumbed in that brilliant run.

Since then of course, Michael Olise has moved on to Bayern Munich and there appear to be transfer rumours surrounding both Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze.

Crystal Palace want Ismaila Sarr

Whilst Glasner and Palace owner, Steve Parish, will have to expect and accept there will be bids for Palace’s best players, so they will also need to raid the transfer window themselves.

According to The Athletic (subscription required), one of the players that the South Londoners are interested in is Marseille’s ex-Watford man, Ismaila Sarr.

The appointment of Roberto De Zerbi at the French giants will apparently see a number of players depart the Ligue Un outfit, with Sarr almost certainly one.

Marseille's Ismaila Sarr could be on the way to Crystal Palace

It isn’t clear at this stage whether the player will accept Palace’s overtures, but given that there don’t seem to be any other offers on the table for his services, Sarr will need to consider that when making any decision on his future.

Further, Glasner clearly sees something in the player that he likes, and if he’s able to espouse the virtues of the club to Sarr, particularly on the back of that incredible late-season surge, there’s every chance that the 26-year-old will buy into that.

West Ham United have been linked with Marseille ace Ismaila Sarr during the January transfer window as they search for attacking reinforcements. But transfer insider Dean Jones, speaking has revealed why the move was never going to materialise.

The prospect of achieving European football for the third consecutive season is becoming increasingly tangible in East London following an expensive yet impressive transfer window. Despite shelling out around £117 million on new arrivals, the club’s lofty expenditure has proven to be worthwhile, yielding results.

And they have been linked with a cluster of players to keep the feel-good factor going.

Not only Ismaila Sarr, but there have been numerous names rumoured to be admired by David Moyes and his recruitment staff during this January transfer window. Ibrahim Osman, Willy Gnonto, Jota, and Hugo Ekitike, who has since joined Eintracht Frankfurt, were all reportedly considered as options alongside the Senegal international.

Sarr, who has tallied four goals and two assists so far this season, has attracted interest from the Hammers due to limited opportunities to impress in France’s top flight. Starting just eight league games this season, Nottingham Forest and Villarreal have also been credited with an interest in his services.

However, Jones has suggested that all avenues West Ham have explored have ended up being a “dead end,” especially regarding Sarr, a player whom the transfer insider believes would appeal to the Hammers.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s been a long old month for West Ham with every avenue they have explored turning out to be a dead end. Even late in the afternoon today they were looking at opportunities, and one of those was Sarr.”

Mbappe saga leaves PSG working with one hand tied behind their back, but they won’t banish him from the first-team

Undoubtedly the story of the week is Kylian Mbappe, with the big development being that Al Hilal have their delegation in Paris sorting out the deal for Malcom to join from Zenit Saint Petersburg. Obviously this has led to various reports about Mbappe’s situation and although it’s been claimed that Mbappe has flat-out rejected Al Hilal, it’s not the case that he’s communicated that to them, it’s that he’s refusing to enter into talks over the possibility.

PSG’s acceptance of Al Hilal’s bid is conditional on Mbappe accepting the move to Saudi Arabia, and the fact that he’s not in those talks at the moment just further fuels PSG’s suspicion that he has a long-standing agreement with Real Madrid. It’s possible that that’s been in place since even just weeks after his most recent contract extension last year. Mbappe also still seems absolutely set on seeing out his PSG contract, so that points towards a decision being made to join Real Madrid as a free agent.

For now, the situation with Mbappe hasn’t actually changed that much. He’s still no closer to any resolution over his PSG future and there’s no indication that Real Madrid will come to the table in the next couple of weeks. There’s just this growing feeling in PSG’s ranks that Mbappe has basically already agreed lucrative terms with Real Madrid and that’s why he’s absolutely set on joining them in 2024. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if that’s still compatible with him spending a year at Al Hilal. Still, at this moment in time Mbappe has been reluctant to even consider starting talks with Al Hilal – the offer is there but he hasn’t responded whatsoever.

There’s been talk that PSG have threatened to keep Mbappe on the bench all season if he stays, but I find it hard to believe they’d actually be able to do that. A lot would have to happen between now and the end of the summer for PSG and Mbappe to have to continue together next season, but there have been previous sagas like this with Adrien Rabiot and Hatem Ben Arfa. Basically, PSG can keep Mbappe separate from the rest of the squad while the transfer window’s open, but once it’s closed they’ll have a very hard time marginalising him.

I think there would have to be some sort of reintegration process – that doesn’t necessarily mean that Luis Enrique would have to use him as a player on the pitch and make him a focal point of the team, but PSG wouldn’t be able to just banish him to the Reserves for the entirety of the season because of the legalities that would be involved in a situation like that. There’s the French Players’ Union, who could remind PSG that they can’t continue to marginalise him in that way once the transfer window is closed, so the idea of PSG punishing Mbappe in that way doesn’t really chime with what the reality might be. I think if Mbappe were to find himself still at PSG in September there would probably have to be some kind of manoeuvre from both the player’s camp and the club to find a way forward together. Even without the European Championships coming up next summer, a whole season without playing would not work in Mbappe’s favour – it’s very difficult to imagine that either party would allow the situation to get to that point, especially as there would be major legal complications for PSG.

Who could replace Mbappe at PSG?

If PSG were to bank €300m from selling Mbappe, I’m not sure it would actually change their transfer plans significantly – the players they’ve looked at already have pretty big price tags. They have looked the situations regarding players like Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane, so those are players already on PSG’s radar, it’s just that there’s the feeling they might not be the best fit.

I don’t expect PSG’s plans to really change based on the huge windfall from the sale of Mbappe – what they really have to plan for is how that front line would be structured. PSG’s star power has already taken a bit of a hit with Lionel Messi leaving, so it would be another massive hit if Mbappe goes as well. It would surely mean Neymar staying put and becoming the face of the project, unless they were able to land another big name.

PSG have been interested in Bernardo Silva for the whole transfer window, and it looks like situation at Manchester City, having already lost a few big names, might complicate that pursuit, but if they suddenly found themselves with the kind of money that could allow them to enter into meaningful talks over that calibre of player, I think that’s something they’d definitely do.

It’s certainly the case that all the uncertainty with Mbappe is tying one hand behind their back to an extent in terms of planning for next season. Luis Enrique is currently trying to get to grips with this PSG squad in Japan but there’s no real source of goals for him at the moment without Mbappe, with Neymar still working his way back to fitness after surgery, so PSG would clearly need a reliable goal-scorer should they lose Mbappe and receive all that money from Al Hilal. Equally, PSG are already looking at those kind of players anyway, to pair with Mbappe, so it doesn’t change much in the immediate sense in terms of what PSG are trying to do on the market, but it does make things a bit easier in terms of Financial Fair Play and other considerations – they could suddenly plough ahead with some big-name targets without having to worry about offloading others.

In terms of attacking targets, PSG continue to be strongly linked with Rasmus Hojlund. He’s a fantastic talent, but I actually think he’s a better fit for what Manchester United are trying to do at this moment in time. The pressure on Hojlund would be massive if he was coming to PSG to replace Mbappe – he doesn’t have the same prolific record as some of the names mentioned above, such as Osimhen or Kane, or even Goncalo Ramos, who’s also been linked.

Still, the interest is genuine and L’Equipe now claim PSG have submitted an official bid. It’s hard to predict for sure, but my feeling is that Man United will end up beating PSG to his signature – he’d get the chance to play more at Old Trafford and become more of a key player straight away than he would at PSG, where he’d more likely be coming in with a view towards building around him in the future.

And while Hojlund has great potential, it’s clear his asking price is pretty steep for someone of his track record. For a bit more money PSG could probably get a more established player with a more prolific record. I don’t really see PSG coming up with something that would be enough to see them beat United to Hojlund.

Potential PSG exits for Marco Verratti and Renato Sanches

In terms of outgoings at PSG, Renato Sanches now looks set to join Roma. Things haven’t really worked out as hoped with the Portuguese midfielder and I think it’s highly likely PSG would consider an exit.

Of course, he’s only been there for a year, so this might surprise some people, but it’s worth pointing out that PSG were a bit limited with what they could do in the transfer market last summer after committing as much as they did to that mega contract renewal for Mbappe, so they had to look at budget-friendly options, and Renato was one of those.

Unfortunately, when you’re looking for bargains there are risks associated with that. With Sanches, one of the risks was, unfortunately, his injury record, which has come back to haunt him again. And when he has been on the pitch he hasn’t really added that much, but that’s not a criticism of Sanches alone because a lot of players in that area have failed to live up to expectations. Another one was Carlos Soler, who plays a similar position to Sanches, and most of the midfielders such as Fabian Ruiz, who promised a lot but then disappointed, and the same with Vitinha – a lot of those Luis Campos gambles in midfield didn’t really work out.

I think Roma are now hoping to get a similar bargain with Sanches to the one they got with Georginio Wijnaldum last summer before his injury. It’s also worth pointing out that Sanches has a bit of a historical following in Serie A – AC Milan were very keen on him for quite a while, so it doesn’t surprise me to see him potentially being on the move to Italy, it seems like quite a logical destination for him.

Al Hilal and PSG could also agree a deal for Marco Verratti, which might’ve taken some people by surprise but is not actually a huge surprise if you look at what’s happened with him over the last few years. He’s had a great career at the club but those top performances have become fewer and further between and Mbappe himself actually questioned Verratti quite publicly a few months ago, when he spoke about players having to eat and sleep right – people assumed those comments were aimed at Neymar, but it was actually Verratti.

West Ham United are reportedly interested in signing the Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr at the end of the season.

According to a report from Jeunes Footeux, the 25-year-old is looking to leave Watford at the end of the season and West Ham are prepared to provide him with an exit route.

Apparently, the Hornets will cash in on the player for an offer of around €20 million (£17.3m).

West Ham are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements and Sarr could prove to be a quality acquisition.

The 25-year-old has played in the Premier League before and he should be able to adapt quickly and make an immediate impact at the London club.

The 25-year-old has a contract with Watford until the summer of 2024 and the Hornets will be under pressure to cash in on him this summer. They will not want to lose him on a free transfer next year.

It has been a disappointing season for Watford in the Championship and they are currently 11th in the table. Sarr is reportedly looking for a fresh new challenge and the opportunity to play for a Premier League club will be an attractive option for him.

The attacker has 11 goals and six assists to his name across all competitions this season and he could prove to be an upgrade on Gianluca Scamacca and Michail Antonio. Both players have struggled to find the back of the net consistently and West Ham will have to bring in more quality in the final third.

Hello guys! Welcome to today’s exclusive Daily Briefing – click here to subscribe if you want this in your inbox five mornings a week, plus exclusives from some other of the biggest journalists in world football!

AC Milan

There’s been a lot written about Brahim Diaz’s future, so here’s my current understanding of the situation: Real Madrid are in talks with Brahim Diaz to offer him a new long term contract, while AC Milan would love to keep him. But decisions will be made in May. I’m not aware of Chelsea interest, they already have many players in that position.

Almeria

Almeria’s talented striker Marciano, born in 2004, is expected to debut in La Liga soon. He is already training with the first-team and has admirers in the form of Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Brighton. He also has a €40m release clause in his contract.

Arsenal

Emile Smith Rowe: “I’m desperate to be playing, the team are doing really well and it’s something I want to be a part of. I’ve got to stay fit now for when the manager needs me. I’m trying to work as hard as I can so I’m ready to perform.”

Barcelona

Barcelona have been interested in Dani Olmo for years, since summer 2020; but their priorities this summer are in different positions or for different players, like Brazilian talent Vitor Roque. For sure Olmo situation in general is one to follow for this summer, but I wouldn’t get too excited about links with Barca as things stand.

There have been no changes on the Sergino Dest situation since December. AC Milan are not planning to trigger the buy option clause in June. The USMNT right-back will return to Barcelona and then discuss his future at the end of the season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly keen to return to Barca – click here to read more.

Bayern Munich

Hasan Salihamidzic further explains the decision to change coaches during the international break: “We have to win every game and have big goals. The circle of coaches is small — so due to the fact there was Thomas Tuchel available on the market now, we dared to take this step. Coach has to have a certain consistent attitude, a leadership style.”

Borussia Monchengladbach

This looks like being an important summer for Manu Kone. He’s a superb talent – good vision and quality on the ball, very fast, and I can see him being a good option for many top clubs. My current understanding is that three clubs are leading the race – one of those is Chelsea, who have many players on their list, including Declan Rice and Romeo Lavia. Still, they really appreciate Kone, they will be there. Manchester United also like him, and PSG always follow top young French players. With PSG, they still have to decide who will be their coach next season, and what the project will look like, but these are the clubs in the race at the moment.

Bournemouth

Official: Bournemouth confirm the club captain Neto has signed a three-year contract extension. Former Barcelona goalkeeper loves the club and he decided to commit for the future on deal valid until 2026.

Chelsea

I think it’s not new that Chelsea are looking for a striker, this was very clear and remains a priority. The arrival of Christopher Nkunku has not changed Chelsea’s plans to add another signing up front.

As for Victor Osimhen, all the top clubs are interested in him after his outstanding season with Napoli. Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea…they are all following the situation.

Victor Osimhen to Chelsea, Man Utd, or PSG?

Chelsea are one of the clubs leading the race for Manu Kone, but they also still have players like Declan Rice and Romeo Lavia on their list for this summer.

Official: Marcus Bettinelli signs new long term deal with Chelsea. He said: “It is a privilege to be at Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world — it is amazing to be a part of and I am buzzing to be here for an extra couple of years.”

Liverpool

Some Liverpool fans have been asking me to clarify some rumours on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with reports linking him with Newcastle, Aston Villa and Brighton.

From what I’ve been told, there are two clubs in England and two clubs abroad looking at him at the moment. There is interest but is very early and not advanced, at this stage. Newcastle, for example, have different priorities in that position, so I wouldn’t read too much into that particular story.

Lorient

Enzo Le Fee announces: “It’s time for me to leave Lorient. I will no longer extend the contract, I waited for new proposal in December but then it didn’t arrive. It’s time to go. I hope to leave this summer so my transfer brings money to Lorient.”

Manchester City

Josko Gvardiol admits he’s spoken with Pep Guardiola, but has distanced himself from leaving RB Leipzig in the summer: “I congratulated Pep Guardiola — he threw a few words at me. But I will keep them to myself. My future? RB Leipzig is not interested in selling me this summer, there is no point in talking about anything else.”

Manchester United

All the top clubs are interested in Victor Osimhen after his outstanding season with Napoli. Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea…they are all following the situation.

Napoli

I’ve had a lot of questions about Kim Min-jae after his fantastic season with Napoli. It’s true that he has a release clause, and it’s a bit less than €50m, but only valid for a few days in July. So, there will be an opportunity there, but also Napoli want to offer him a new deal. Manchester United are monitoring the situation, but Napoli will push to keep him, and offer him a new contract to change this clause. As for the player, he’s been very clear that he wants to focus on the rest of the season in Serie A and the Champions League, and then we will see.

PSG

Manu Kone: “Interest of PSG? You know that I am Parisien, I was born and trained here. There is a logical link. But whether it’s Paris or another club doesn’t matter to me. I just want to play. If I have to leave, I’ll think about playing as priority.”

Julian Draxler and Leandro Paredes are both expected to return to PSG at the end of the season, waiting for possible new solutions. Juventus are not planning to activate the buy option clause for Paredes at this stage; Draxler, injured and expected to leave Benfica.

Real Madrid

There’s been a lot written about Brahim Diaz’s future, so here’s my current understanding of the situation: Real Madrid are in talks with Brahim Diaz to offer him a new long term contract, while AC Milan would love to keep him. But decisions will be made in May. I’m not aware of Chelsea interest, they already have many players in that position.

Those Carlo Ancelotti links with the Brazil job don’t seem to be going away, with Brazilian FA president Ednaldo fuelling the speculation by saying: “I really admire Ancelotti. He’s not only players’ favourite but fans’ too. Everywhere I go in Brazil, Ancelotti is the first name the supporters ask me about. Let’s wait for the appropriate time, we’ll see if we can make it happen.”

Tottenham

Antonio Conte has spoken for the first time since leaving Tottenham, saying: “Football is passion. I thank everyone at Spurs who appreciated and shared my passion. Special thought to the Fans who always showed me support and appreciation, unforgettable to hear them singing my name. I wish you all the best for the future.”

It’s too early to know what will come next for Conte. It will take some weeks to assess his options and pick the best next step. I’m sure Italy will be his priority due to the family and personal reasons, so personally I’d say Italy as the best destination for Antonio.

Emerson Royal is set to miss next six weeks with a knee injury — and it also requires surgery. Operation will take place in the next days — one more blow for Spurs and Stellini.

Watford

There’s a chance for Ismaila Sarr to leave Watford this summer, regardless of whether or not they win promotion. But at the end, interested clubs will have to offer what Watford want; every summer or January we have Sarr’s name around and deals are not completed because of Watford’s position. An important bid will be needed.

It looks likely that Ismaila Sarr will be on the move this summer as long as the right offer comes in, according to Fabrizio Romano in his exclusive CaughtOffside column.

The Senegal international has shone for Watford in recent years, proving one of their star players in both the Premier League and in the Championship, and it seems inevitable that he’ll soon earn himself a big move.

Sarr has previously attracted interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, according to the Athletic, and there’s no doubt those two clubs could still do well to strengthen in attack with a pacey and skilful attacking player of his calibre.

The recent Athletic report also named Aston Villa and Crystal Palace as potential Sarr suitors, but Romano hasn’t named any names for the time being.

Ismaila Sarr celebrates a goal for Watford

The journalist simply stresses that it won’t necessarily be easy to do business with Watford, who will want an important bid to let their star player go.

“There’s a chance for Ismaila Sarr to leave Watford this summer, regardless of whether or not they win promotion,” Romano said.

“But at the end, interested clubs will have to offer what Watford want; every summer or January we have Sarr’s name around and deals are not completed because of Watford’s position. An important bid will be needed.”

In the end, it may well be that it’s only clubs like Man Utd or Liverpool who will be able to afford to meet Watford’s valuation for Sarr.

Watford winger Ismaila Sarr will reportedly definitely be leaving the club this summer after a lack of progress in talks over a new contract with the Hornets.

The Senegal international is undoubtedly one of the finest talents outside of the Premier League, and it seems he’s now set to leave Watford even if they get promoted back to the Premier League at the end of this season, according to The Athletic.

The report notes that both Manchester United and Liverpool have considered Sarr in the past, while Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have also shown an interest in the 25-year-old.

It remains to be seen where Sarr could be moving to next, but Man Utd would surely benefit from strengthening out wide after some inconsistent form from both Jadon Sancho and Antony this season.

Ismaila Sarr celebrates a goal for Watford

Liverpool, meanwhile, could also do well to look at Sarr again after the departure of Sadio Mane last summer, with the likes of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota struggling to stay fit and help replace the Bayern Munich man.

It will be interesting to see who Sarr chooses, and if he can really make that step up from playing in the Championship to representing some of the top teams in the top flight.

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for the Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.

According to a report from the Sun, the Championship outfit will demand a fee of around £25 million for their star forward and it remains to be seen whether Villa are prepared to pay up for his services.

Unai Emery is looking to add more quality and depth to his attack after the departure of Danny Ings. The former Aston Villa striker has now joined West Ham United and the West Midlands club are looking to replace him adequately.

Sarr has been in impressive form for the Championship outfit this season and he did reasonably well in the recently concluded World Cup with his country Senegal as well.

The 24-year-old has 7 goals and 4 assists to his name in the Championship this season.

He has played in the Premier League before with Watford and the Senegalese international managed to impress in the top flight as well. There is no doubt that he could prove to be a quality long-term addition to the Aston Villa attack and it remains to be seen whether the two clubs can work out a transfer before the January window closes.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa will face competition from Crystal Palace for the highly-rated winger.

Villa have improved a lot since the arrival of Emery and they will be aiming to finish the season strongly. Bringing in the right additions this month will certainly help them sustain their recent upturn in form and finish the season on a high.

Everton have reportedly approached Watford regarding a potential deal for Ismaila Sarr.

However, according to Tutto Udinese, the Toffees have been put off by Watford’s £35 million asking price. The 24-year-old is seeking a move away from the club and would like to leave as soon as January.

His price tag has likely increased due to his performances at the World Cup, in which he started every match and netted a goal on the biggest stage for Senegal. He also became an AFCON champion last year with his national team.

In the Championship this season, Sarr has registered six goals and three assists in 17 appearances. He has been a key player for the Hornets since he joined in 2019 and the club, as well as its supporters, will be hoping he can be instrumental in their pursuit of promotion to the Premier League.

Everton must bolster attack

On the other hand, Frank Lampard will be on the hunt for prolific attackers that can help Everton in their mission of staying in the top division after a poor start to the league campaign. They sit in 17th place and face back-to-back title winners Manchester City on December 31.

Crystal Palace are interested in signing Watford and Senegal attacker Ismaila Sarr.

That’s according to journalist and former Foot Mercato editor Ignazio Genuardi, who believes there are three Premier League clubs chasing the African’s signature.

Having consistently been Watford’s best player, as well as boasting a World Cup campaign on his CV, it appears to be only a matter of time before the 24-year-old departs the Hornets.

Posting an exciting update on his Twitter, Genuardi has claimed that ‘in addition’ to Aston Villa and Everton, Patrick Viera’s Eagles are also tracking the talented winger.

Since joining Watford from Rennes back in 2019, Sarr, who has 18 months left on his contract, has gone on to feature in 109 matches, in all competitions, directly contributing to 51 goals along the way.
