Security was beefed up at Mohali-Chandigarh border due to a protest call given by Quami Insaaf Morcha. A meeting of the organisers of the morcha and Chandigarh Police officials was held on Sunday.
The representatives of the Sant Samaaj led a 31-member jatha which marched to the Chandigarh border. The Sant Samaaj extended support to the morcha and also gave a call to join the morcha on August 15 to hold a protest outside Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence in Chandigarh.
Gurcharan Singh, the organiser of the morcha, told The Indian Express that UT Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur held a meeting with them for around one hour.
“They are not giving any clearance to us about the route. We want a route be earmarked so that we can hold a peaceful protest,” Singh added. The morcha has been demanding the release of Sikh prisoners who have completed their jail terms in various terror-related cases. The morcha had started a protest on January 7.
Meanwhile, security was beefed up at Mohali-Chandigarh border as the UT Administration did not want the protesters to enter Chandigarh.
On February 18, violence had broken out in Sector 52 during a clash between the protesters and the Chandigarh Police.
