Sean Dyche says Jarrad Branthwaite is making ‘good progress’ toward full fitness after missing Everton’s friendly against Sligo Rovers on Friday.

The Toffees had to come from 2-0 and 3-1 down to salvage a draw against the Irish club in their first friendly of the summer — held in honour of Everton captain Seamus Coleman, who signed for the club from Sligo for just £60,000 back in 2009.

Mason Holgate scored Everton’s first goal in his first appearance for the club since returning from loans to Southampton and Sheffield United last season. And after going 3-1 down, two late strikes in two minutes from Portuguese youngster Youssef Chermiti spared Everton’s blushes.

Everton were missing a number of players for their trip to Ireland, including experienced defender James Tarkowski, Scottish right-back Nathan Patterson and former England international Dele Alli.

“He [Tarkowski] has got a minor niggle at this stage and we have to be careful,” Dyche told Everton‘s official website of Tarkowski after the match. “We’ve got some other players we’re just being a bit careful with – they’re okay, just a few niggles that we’re going to monitor but nothing too serious. We’re hopeful with Tarky, hopefully it’s nothing.”

Branthwaite ‘making good progress’

Most notable, however, was the absence of Branthwaite, who has been the subject of much transfer speculation this summer.

The 22-year-old was among Everton’s standout players last season as he helped the Toffees finish 15th and 14 points clear of relegation despite suffering an eight-point deduction.

Branthwaite’s form saw him pick up his first senior cap for England prior to Euro 2024, although he ultimately failed to make Gareth Southgate’s final squad for the run to the final.

The former Carlisle United youngster has also caught the attention of Manchester United who, according to Sky Sports, have already seen two offers for Branthwaite knocked back, the latest of which came in at £50m — £20m short of Everton’s asking price.

But Branthwaite’s absence against Sligo wasn’t related to any sort of transfer activity, with the defender simply struggling for match fitness. Dyche revealed that he will be back in action soon.

He added: “Jarrad is making good progress as are Patto and Dele so we’ll see how those guys go. At this stage, it’s nothing too serious so we’re thankful for that.”

Up next for Everton is another friendly against League Two side Salford City on Saturday.

Leeds United winger, Willy Gnonto, is a man that is very much in demand, though Everton remain confident in signing the 20-year-old Italian this summer.

ToffeeWeb note the two offers that the club made for the player this time last year, both of which were rejected at the time.

With Daniel Farke’s side unable to get promotion back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking, it has left the all whites vulnerable to reasonable offers from clubs for their players.

Everton and nine other clubs interested in Willy Gnonto

CaughtOffside sources with knowledge of Gnonto’s situation are aware of his willingness to move to Goodison Park, and his desire to have his current club facilitate the transfer.

However, there are another nine clubs interested in the player’s services, and that could potentially complicate Everton’s desire to complete the signing soonest.

Sources have indicated to CaughtOffside that a price tag of £25m would be enough to prise the player, who scored eight goals and provided three assists last season (WhoScored), from Elland Road.

However, with so much interest in him, the Yorkshire-based outfit may consider that it’s worth holding out for the highest bidder.

Napoli, Juventus, Como, AS Roma, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Wolves and Newcastle United are all credited with an interest, with Everton set to submit their bid after selling Amadou Onana to Aston Villa.

A successful transfer at this stage could require some manoeuvring from Everton over the next couple of weeks, but if they’re determined to bring Gnonto to Merseyside, the one thing that they could have in their favour is the player’s desire to join them a year ago.

If nothing has changed since then, there’s simply no reason for him to take up any offers from elsewhere.

Man United transfer target, Jarrad Branthwaite, is evidently a player that is very much in demand this summer.

The 22-year-old Everton centre-back wasn’t taken by Gareth Southgate as part of his final squad to Germany for the European Championship, though that shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a reflection of his footballing prowess.

With Gareth Southgate expected to leave the position of England manager once the Three Lions participation in the European Championship has concluded, any new incumbent would be hard pressed to think of a reason not to include Branthwaite in future squads.

Everton reject second Man United bid for Branthwaite

In any event, Man United had already made their intentions regarding the player clear, having made a bid believed to be in the region of £35m for him.

That was swiftly rebuffed by the Toffees, though Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Erik ten Hag appear not to have been deterred and have now submitted a second offer.

According to CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, the new bid is for £45m plus £5m in add-ons, but this too has been rejected out of hand.

It’s understood that Everton want closer to £60m/£70m to get them around the negotiating table, so any further lowballing from the Old Trafford outfit might not have the effect intended.

From the player’s own point of view, it isn’t clear if he’s willing to dig his heels in to help force through a move or if he’s happy staying where he is for now.

What is clear is that the Red Devils really need to up the ante if they want to begin the new Premier League campaign with a squad worthy of challenging for honours both domestically and in Europe.

It’s clear that Everton ace, Jarrad Branthwaite, is a player that is in demand, with Man United already agreeing personal terms with the player.

The issue for the Red Devils now is to come to an accord with the Toffees, and that might be easier said than done given how highly they rate the 21-year-old.

Erik ten Hag always maintained that his United side struggled throughout the 2023/24 campaign because they didn’t have a settled back four, and the fact that they had serious injury concerns with the centre-backs.

Everton want double Man United’s offer for Jarrad Branthwaite

Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire were all out for long periods and at various points in the campaign, making life incredibly difficult for the Dutchman.

He showed that with Martinez coming back to shore up the defence in the FA Cup final, that they were capable of beating rivals, Man City, and keeping them quiet whilst doing so.

It wasn’t until late on that Jeremy Doku gave the Cityzens hope, and he was their major threat on the day.

Therefore, if the Red Devils can land a talent such as Branthwaite and keep him injury free, there’s a good possibility that United can get up a head of steam from the start of the 2024/25 season.

They could find negotiations with Everton difficult, however.

According to CaughtOffside columnist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, the Toffees want at least £65m/£70m, whereas Sir Jim Ratcliffe is believed to have only offered £35m.

If there’s no room for negotiation, then it’s entirely possible that United will turn their attentions elsewhere, but the will of the player might just sway this one for somewhere between what’s already been offered and Everton’s original expectations.

It’s been a trying time of late for Everton Football Club.

Buy Last Minute Tickets to the UEFA Champions League Final!

Although there is the move to a new stadium to look forward to, the apparent mismanagement of the club has left a potential takeover by 777 Partners hanging by a thread.

Were any takeover to end up not being completed, it would almost certainly impact heavily on the club and its ability to move forward on and off the pitch.

The cost of the new stadium will remain a millstone around the necks of those at the club unless things can be put on an even keel.

Everton will lose out on Ross Barkley

Despite being deducted points for their financial problems last season, Sean Dyche performed something of a miracle by being able to keep the Toffees in the Premier League.

In order for the side to have a reasonable chance of not having to go through another season-long relegation scrap, it’s obvious the manager needs some reliable exponents in his squad.

Ross Barkley will sign for Aston Villa as Everton need to sell before they can buy.
Everton will miss out on the signing of Ross Barkley.

It’s believed that he wanted to secure a switch for Everton old boy, Ross Barkley, however, there’s a frustrating reason, according to Football Insider, why the likelihood is the attacking midfielder will sign for Unai Emery at Aston Villa instead.

Everton will need to sell players before they can bring any new faces in, and that will clearly leave Dyche with a huge predicament ahead of the new season.

Improvements need to be made in various positions, but if there’s no money available to be able to do just that, and the movement of players out of Goodison Park isn’t flowing in as timely a fashion as the club would like, it represents a real problem for Dyche and his backroom team.

There’s only a finite amount of times that he can work miracles with what he has available, and relegation could soon become a reality for the club if nothing changes.

Everton are eyeing up a summer move for promising Newcastle United winger Yankuba Minteh, according to reports.

The 19-year-old joined the Magpies from Danish side OB for £6m last summer before immediately being loaned out to Feyenoord.

Minteh thrived with the Dutch giants, notching 11 goals –including one in the Champions League — and six assists across all competitions to help the Rotterdam side finish second in the Eredivisie and lift the KNVB Cup.

The Gambia international certainly caught the attention of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

“I have been keeping a very close eye on him,” Howe said of Minteh in April (via ChronicleLive), adding: “I think he has done really well and attacked the challenge of going alone, new league, new team-mates and has played in the Champions League.

“I think he has done really well this year and he can be proud of his efforts.”

Everton ‘post interest’ in Minteh

Minteh has highlighted the Premier League as his main goal, but admitted he doesn’t know if that will be with Newcastle United or another club.

Given the finances now at Newcastle’s disposal, coupled with the strong form of the likes of Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron, Minteh may well have to seek pastures new if he wants a long-term career in the English top-flight.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton have been impressed with Minteh’s form in the Netherlands and have already ‘posted an interest’ in the winger.

The major sticking point for the Toffees is finances after they suffered an eight-point deduction this season for breaking Premier League spending rules.

Everton still aren’t out of hot water when it comes to their financial position, so Sean Dyche may be restricted in what he can spend this summer.

According to the same report, however, Newcastle remain keen on Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, perhaps creating some wiggle room in negotiations, although it’s understood the Magpies’ main focus this summer will be battling Manchester United and Chelsea for Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Sean Dyche has once again worked miracles this season as he guided Everton to safety despite multiple off-field issues which have plagued the campaign.

Everton’s season has very much been a rollercoaster of emotions. The team on the pitch have performed on the whole and have given a good account of themselves against some of the Premier League’s best teams, including a recent 2-0 victory against Liverpool.

But while Sean Dyche and his players have worked hard and battled for every point, the farcical operations of the football club have meant the Toffees have been hit with a points deduction of eight points. If you were to add that on to their 40 points they would be on the verge of the top half of the Premier League, highlighting just what an unbelievable job Dyche has done on the blue side of Merseyside.

The Everton manager foresees another season characterised by the arduous task of preserving the club’s Premier League status. As the Blues navigate through significant off-the-pitch uncertainties, Dyche anticipates a challenging summer ahead.

Sean Dyche admits Everton will likely have to sell key players this summer
Amadou Onana, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jordan Pickford during Everton’s 6-0 loss to Chelsea.

Sean Dyche admits their will be more challenges for Everton to overcome next season

Expressing the likelihood of player departures, he acknowledges the necessity of balancing the squad while addressing financial constraints and restructuring the wage framework.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “There are more challenges to come, I don’t just mean financial, I mean balancing out the club, balancing out the playing side of things, balancing out the wage structure. There are more challenges to come.”

Two players that are likely to be linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer are Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite, and if Everton are in desperate need to raise funds then those two are their prized assets that will fetch in the most.

Although Leicester City have only just been promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, one of their players could well be looking to pastures new over the summer.

The Foxes were pegged back towards the latter stages of the Championship season but they were, in truth, head and shoulders above many of their English second-tier opponents.

Despite this, Kelechi Iheanacho may not be too happy at the club.

Everton could sign Iheanacho

Former Everton CEO, Keith Wyness, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, believes that a move could be afoot, and to his former club potentially.

“There will have been discussions about his future behind the scenes and both sides may be close,” he said.

“He could be trying to put fan pressure on the board. All these little things aren’t a coincidence, there is usually something going on behind the scenes.

“I think he can do a big job for Premier League sides, he’s someone I’d keep an eye on.

“I know Everton have been interested in him, and he’s got the ability to get a good move in the Premier League.”

Iheanacho is still only 27 years of age, and has a number of seasons left in the game. With his contract up at the end of June, he therefore represents a reasonable hire for any teams that are interested in his services.

Everton may need to get creative in terms of their accounting in order to be able to afford the front man, but with five goals in 10 Championship starts (WhoScored), he could well be a value for money hire.

The future of Everton Football Club is still an unknown at this point in time, with the protracted takeover by 777 Partners showing no signs of being completed.

The Toffees have endured an awful time over the past few seasons and have almost been relegated in the past two.

Ahead of their move from Goodison Park to a brand new, state-of-the-art stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, the club appear to be sinking in a mound of debt which will make life difficult when it comes to transfers in.

Certainly, if Sean Dyche, or whomever comes to the club in his stead, doesn’t have money to spend, the Toffees aren’t going to have a squad that befits such a grand new home.

Everton are unlikely to be taken over by 777 Partners

The last thing the club need is a relegation to the Championship but if things don’t turnaround soon, there’s every possibility that could happen.

Former Premier League co-creator, Jon Smith, doesn’t believe that the takeover will ever be done with 777 Partners, though he has sounded a positive note for the Toffees.

“777 Partners have got a lot of baggage that seems to be crystallising in all the wrong places and at the wrong time,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“That is now beginning to infiltrate the thinking of people who need to be on side with them, such as the Premier League, and this would indicate that this is a problematic position for them to continue to progress.

“Interestingly enough, the Everton supporters have possibly handed them a way out because at the recent AGM fans voiced their concerns regarding 777.

“That could be the kicker for 777 to say ‘look, supporters don’t want us now, obviously they’re the heartbeat of the club and so we will no longer be there.’

Everton's takeover isn't likely to go through
Construction of a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock has plunged Everton into crisis

“MSP Sports Capital are a company that seems to be circling Everton at the moment and there will be others. I’m aware of the numbers by the way, and they are huge; into eight/nine figures, and I think there’s going to have to be a lot of potential Russian write offs to get the right owners in place.

“Everton won’t go down. Had they gone down I think they would’ve had to go into administration which, in a bizarre way, might have been the best solution. Don’t try telling that to someone who’s got blue in their veins though.

“They’re a wonderful club with a great history, good players and good support and I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I think it’s unlikely that the 777 takeover will happen now.

“Everton are big enough to attract huge money so if I was Moshiri, I’d do what I do very well at the moment and that’s do nothing at all because I think there’s going to be more interest from other parties.”

One of the English top-flight’s most storied teams, the glory days of the Howard Kendall era seem a long time ago now.

The ownership of the club need to accept the criticism that’s routinely come their way of late, and do the right thing for the organisation and its loyal supporters.

For Everton to even be close to going into administration denotes the seriousness of their situation, and goes to show that if the ownership don’t appear to have the club’s best interests at heart, any club is at risk of financial penalties and the potential of sailing close to the wind in terms of going out of business altogether.

Sky Sports legend Martin Tyler has claimed that Everton manager Sean Dyche should be considered for the Manchester United job.

Erik ten Hag’s job is unsafe at Old Trafford after Man United’s disastrous campaign that has seen them struggle in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The Dutch manager is walking on a thin rope and defeat in the FA Cup final against Manchester City this month can seal his fate.

The former Ajax boss has failed to improve Man United and has been unable to create a football identity at the club since his highly promising move.

A number of managers have been linked with the Man United job including Thomas Tuchel, Roberto De Zerbi, Graham Potter and England boss Gareth Southgate.

Tyler has now thrown a new name in the conversation as the legendary football commentator feels Dyche deserves credit for what he has done.

Speaking on the Joy of Football podcast, Tyler said:

“I’ve said Sean Dyche should be considered by Manchester United. Gareth Southgate is being considered by Manchester United, we believe. And Sean maybe as well, because it is a fresh point of view and they need some freshness, they need a different point of view, a different sense of purpose.

Man United Premier League Martin Tyler Everton
Martin Tyler wants Sean Dyche to be considered for the Man United job.

“And maybe if you were sitting around a table with all those new influences at Manchester United, you could make the point and make the case that actually what you do need is something a bit closer to home. It was tough for David Moyes because it’s straight on the back of Fergie. It’s a terribly difficult job to follow. And since then, obviously people have come and gone without… have Manchester United lost that DNA that they had?”

Tyler wants someone at Man United who is from the same country and who has seen the club get success in the last thirty years under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The iconic commentator feels that Man United have struggled because they have gone for foreign managers who have failed to understand the true essence of the club.

Man United are still looking for the right manager

Since Ferguson’s retirement, Man United have gone for big name managers like Jose Mourinho and Louis Van Gaal but none of them worked.

Ten Hag joined the club with great expectation after his impressive work at Ajax but he has faced a similar fate as previous Man United managers.

Dyche lacks experience of managing a big club and the Man United job could be too big for him.

The Red Devils are yet to decide if they are going to sack ten Hag or show faith in him.
