Aston Villa are expected to complete the £50m signing of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this weekend according to reports.

Villa have been busy this summer as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a Champions League campaign next season.

Ian Maatsen, Ross Barkley, Samuel Iling Junior, Enzo Barrenechea and Lewis Dobbin have all arrived whilst Jaden Philogene is set to complete his return to the club imminently from Hull City.

Villa to complete Onana deal this weekend

Villa agreed a deal last weekend with Everton worth £50m for the Belgium international, and he’s some what of a marquee signing for the club.

The Telegraph report that Onana is set to complete his move to Villa Park this weekend and will undergo a medical at the club’s training ground following his break after Euro 2024.

Amadou Onana applauds the Everton fans.
Onana is set to complete his switch to Villa this weekend.

The report adds that the 22-year-old, who was a key target for Unai Emery will sign a long term contract at the club, and is set to be available for Villa’s pre-season tour of America later this month.

Onana arrived at Everton from French side Lille in 2022 and has impressed over his two seasons at Goodison Park, with his performances seeing him linked with moves to Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Belgian made 37 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees last season, scoring three goals as the club finished 15th following a points deduction.

Onana is likely viewed as a replacement for Douglas Luiz after the Brazilian moved to Juventus, and Villa have a strong set of options in the middle of the park, which includes the likes of Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara.

However, Villa could be set to lose Moussa Diaby just a year after signing him, with Al-Ittihad in advanced talks over a move for the 25-year-old, who picked the Premier League over going to Saudi Arabia last summer.

West Ham are considering a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin according to Sky Sports.

The Hammers are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season and have so far added Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme, whilst defender Max Kilman has arrived from Wolves in a deal worth £40m.

West Ham were heavily reliant on Jarrod Bowen for goals last season, and with Danny Ings’ move to the London Stadium not working out, and Michail Antonio not getting any younger the club need new options at the top end of the pitch.

West Ham consider move for Calvert Lewin

The Hammers have been linked with a number of strikers ahead of Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge with the Spaniard replacing David Moyes at the end of the last campaign.

West Ham have reportedly looked at Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, who Chelsea had expressed interest in earlier this summer, but an offer has yet to be made.

Calvert-Lewin is attracting interest from Premier League clubs this summer.

Sky Sports have reported that Calvert-Lewin could be an option for the club, with the Englishman now inside the final 12 months of his deal.

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move to Newcastle earlier in the window, but that reportedly fell through due to personal terms not being agreed.

The England international, who is believed to be valued at around £30m by Everton, has been at Goodison Park since 2016, and has scored 68 goals for the Toffees.

Calvert-Lewin has had a number injury problems over the last couple of years, but he put those behind him as he made 38 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.

The Hammers are also believed to have an interest in Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson who looks likely to leave the Emirates this summer, whilst they have also looked at Nice centre back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Colombia are on an impressive run in this 2024 Copa America tournament, and two of the players who have starred in this competition are former Everton player James Rodríguez and Crystal Palace defender Daniel Muñoz.

Rodríguez had one goal and five assists heading into the semifinal against Uruguay while Muñoz has two goals and one assist. WhoScored.com highlighted a stat that shows how notable these two players have been for Colombia and that they are among the best talents in this tournament.

According to the statistical outlet, Rodríguez (6) and Muñoz (3) are in the top four regarding the most direct goal involvements at the 2024 Copa America. Rodríguez assisted in the semifinal match against Uruguay, so the 32-year-old now has seven goal involvements.

Regardless of what happens in the semifinals, these two players have shown themselves among South America’s top talents. Muñoz’s form bodes well for Crystal Palace, as the squad will get back a defender who is riding on ultra-confidence.

Last season, for Crystal Palace, Muñoz registered four assists in 16 Premier League matches, and the Colombian’s next campaign could be an outstanding one.

Jordan Pickford once again played a part as England beat Switzerland on penalties to advance to the semi finals of Euro 2024, but it was his water bottle that caught people’s attention.

Pickford saved Switzerland’s first penalty from Manuel Akanji as he got down to make a smart stop, although Akanji’s effort was poor and lacked power.

It turned out to be the crucial save as no other penalties were missed in the remainder of the shootout.

England’s players are rightly receiving plaudits for their brilliant penalties, but a picture of Pickford’s water bottle has emerged on social media.

On Pickford’s bottle was a list detailing Switzerland’s penalty takers and the direction in which they go, with dive left written next to Akanji’s name.

This isn’t something new and Pickford has also done this with Everton and had success with it.

It has seemingly worked in Pickford’s favour again, but there’s always the chance if the opposition know they will change their mind and go in a different direction.

How much of a difference it makes is unknown but at the top level it’s about fine margins and you need every advantage you can get no matter how small.

The Dutch media have launched an astonishing attack on Jordan Pickford in the aftermath of England’s victory against Slovakia on Sunday.

Special Offer for England Fans – Get Fabrizio Romano’s Premium Transfer Newsletter FREE for a YEAR (normally £60)!

England toiled for most of the game before Jude Bellingham’s superb bicycle kick in the 95th minute spared their blushes and Harry Kane scored the winner in extra time.

The Three Lions have been massively underwhelming, with a number of players not hitting the heights expected, but Pickford certainly doesn’t fall into that category.

Dutch media attack Pickford

Pickford has been one of England’s better performers at Euro 2024 and has only conceded two goals in four matches, and he will be tasked with keeping Switzerland at bay in Saturday’s quarter final.

A number of players have rightfully come in for criticism which has certainly been warranted, and Pickford has found himself on the end of an astonishing attack from the Dutch Media.

Jordan Pickford in action for England.
Pickford has been heavily criticised by Dutch media.

In quotes picked up by Dutch outlet FC Update, pundit Johan Derksen tore into Pickford, labelling him “that terrible Everton goalkeeper.”

“What really bothers me about that team is that terrible Everton goalkeeper. A goalkeeper with sagging socks, who looks like a goalkeeper from the sixth team of an amateur club,” he said.

Another pundit Wilfred Genee was equally as scathing and said:

“Did you see how happy he was at the end, when he had that ball? It wasn’t good! He had to be admitted, that guy. He was lying there and I think he is not well anymore. Something happened, laughing gas?”

Quite what has wound them up so much about Pickford is unclear, but it feels very personal and for professional pundits they are quite astonishing comments which have clearly crossed the line.

Pickford has been an ever present under Southgate and has won 65 caps for the Three Lions, and he will be hoping despite an underwhelming start England can end their 58-year wait for a trophy in Germany of all places.

Former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton believes Spurs could “hijack” Manchester United’s move for Jarrad Branthwaite.

Branthwaite is a man in demand this summer following a successful season which saw him break into the England squad, although he missed out on the final squad for Euro 2024.

Everton will be desperate to keep hold of the 21-year-old and they are believed to value him at around £70m.

Hutton thinks Spurs could hijack United’s move for Branthwaite

United are looking for defensive reinforcements following the departure of Raphael Varane, whilst doubts still surround the future of Harry Maguire, who was subject of strong interest from West Ham last summer.

The Red Devils have identified Branthwaite as their priority target, and saw an opening bid of £35m turned down earlier this month, which is someway short of Everton’s valuation.

Branthwaite is reportedly keen to join United, but there has been no significant progress since the opening offer, and Hutton believes his former club Spurs could be set to try and hijack the deal for the defender.

Jarrad Branthwaite in action for Everton.
Hutton feels Spurs could hijack United’s move for Branthwaite.

“I feel at times [Tottenham] have been light in that sense, actually across the back four,” he told Football Insider.

“When you look at their starting back line, if any of them get injured or go missing for a good length of time, the players that come in aren’t quite up to the standard.

“To have someone in the door with that potential who could be a regular starter for England moving forward, that could be a great deal.

“He did really well last season, and there are talks [Cristian] Romero could be on the move, so there’s a few things in the pipeline that might lead towards them going for someone like [Branthwaite], and him filling that void at centre-half.

“I have heard there could be a hijack there, from people I speak to at the club.”

Whether Spurs enter the race for Branthwaite remains to be seen, but given they conceded 61 goals last season Ange Postecoglou could be in the market for defensive reinforcements despite signing Micky van de Ven last summer and Radu Dragusin in January.

Everton could find themselves embroiled in a three-club tug of war for the potential signing of Jayden Oosterwolde.

The Fenerbahçe left-back’s situation is being monitored by the Toffees, fellow Premier League outfit West Ham United and the Serie A’s Napoli.

Sources close to CaughtOffside have noted that the Hammers have already met with the Dutchman’s agents for further information.

Despite this, it’s understood that Everton won’t be rushed into making a move themselves.

Sources close to the club believe that there are currently no plans to sell the 23-year-old in the current summer window.

That said, everything does have a price. Fenerbahçe’s position could be seriously tested by an offer of around the €25-30m [£21.1-25.3m] mark.

What do the stats say about Oosterwolde?

Could Oosterwolde be Lopetugui’s next signing?

The fullback, who doubles up as a centre-back and left midfielder, was ever-present in Fenerbahçe’s Super Lig campaign in 2023/24, racking up 43 appearances across all competitions.

The Zwolle-born footballer looks competent on the ball, registering in the 91st percentile for pass completion (amongst peers outside of Europe’s top five leagues), according to FBref.

His statistical profile indicates he’d be a useful threat at the opposite end of the pitch, given he ranks in the 88th percentile for non-penalty xG and 69th percentile for xAG.

If the likes of West Ham, Everton or Napoli could keep the price below the £25m mark, he could be a snip.

Everton are pushing to complete a deal for Armando Broja with the club in daily contact with Chelsea according to reports.

Broja endured a difficult campaign last time out, and having had limited opportunities in the first half of the season at Stamford Bridge he joined Fulham on loan in January.

The Albania international didn’t fare much better at Craven Cottage and only made eight appearances totalling just 80 minutes.

Everton close in on Broja deal

The 22-year-old returned to action for Chelsea in September following a long lay off with a serious knee injury suffered during the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

On his first start since returning from injury he scored against Fulham, but opportunities were few and far between for the Albanian during the first half of the season.

Chelsea were open to selling the striker in January but there were no takers at their ambitious £50m asking price and he instead joined Fulham on loan in an attempt to boost his value.

The loan move didn’t have the desired effect with Broja seldom featuring for Fulham, but it’s evident his Chelsea career is over.

Wolves, Bologna, Monaco and AC Milan are reportedly all interested in the striker with Chelsea believed to want in the region of £30m.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has taken to X.com to reveal that Everton are close to agreeing a deal for Broja worth £30m.

He said: “Exclusive: Everton are pushing to sign Armando Broja.

“Club in daily contact with Chelsea with a £30m package discussed, #EFC hoping for a quick breakthrough.”

Everton currently have Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as their forward options and Sean Dyche is clearly looking for more firepower ahead of the new season.

Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park, and if a deal does go through for Broja he would most likely be expecting regular game time.

Manchester United are considering two alternatives if they can’t land Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite this summer according to reports.

It’s set to be a busy summer at Old Trafford, and the Red Devils still haven’t taken a decision on the future of Erik ten Hag, but are seemingly pushing ahead with their transfer plans.

Despite winning the FA Cup, United endued a difficult season which saw them finish eighth and miss out on Champions League qualification.

United eye Branthwaite alternatives

United are set to strengthen defensively following the departure of Raphael Varane and are believed to be on the lookout for a starting quality centre back.

Branthwaite is thought to be United’s top target and reports claim Everton would want in the region of £60-£70m for his services.

If a move for Branthwaite doesn’t work out journalist Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that the Red Devils are considering two alternative targets.

Branthwaite is believed to be United’s main defensive target.

“Alternative options being considered are pretty vast, and they could end up signing two centre-backs,” Jones said.

“From within the Premier League the two main players of interest are believed to be Max Kilman of Wolves and Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace.

“Of the two, Kilman would be slightly cheaper at around £50million, though Wolves would not want to lose him.”

Kilman appeared in every Premier League game for Wolves last season whilst Guehi could start for England at the Euros given doubts over Maguire’s fitness.

It’s not just defensively where United are looking to strengthen and they have been linked with a move for Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, whilst they are believed to want a striker to take the goal scoring burden off Rasmus Hojlund.

This summer marks the first window since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos assumed control of footballing matters at Old Trafford, and it will be interesting to see how much they are prepared to invest in the squad.
