Former Netherlands and Everton defender Johnny Heitinga has joined Liverpool ahead of the 2024/25 campaign where he will work as an assistant coach to new Reds boss Arne Slot.

The 40-year-old left a similar role at West Ham United at the end of last season following the departure of David Moyes and has decided a move to Liverpool is the next best step for his career.

The Dutchman has also coached at various levels with Ajax but this move to Anfield could propel his career should everything go to plan.

The Athletic reports that Heitinga will work alongside fellow assistant Sipke Hulshoff, lead physical performance coach Ruben Peeters and first-team individual development coach Aaron Briggs.

Slot’s coaching team at Liverpool is starting to come together as the Merseyside club continue their pre-season preparations. The Merseyside club are set to fly out to the United States soon and the Dutch coach would ideally like his staff complete by the time that happens.

Heitinga has already spent time in Liverpool having played with Everton for five years between 2009 and 2014.

The Dutch defender made 140 appearances for the Toffees, scoring five goals and assisting a further five. The Blue side of the city will not be happy with his latest move but it is what is best for his career.

With all these changes happening at Liverpool, it is hard to predict how the Reds will perform this season following the departure of Jurgen Klopp.

Pre-season will be crucial for Slot as he implements his ideas to his new players, however, that will be disrupted as a result of players coming back late due to their participation in Euro 2024 and Copa America.

Despite all this, Liverpool are expected to have a strong campaign but will they be challenging for the Premier League title? only time will tell.

Former West Ham assistant Johnny Heitinga has revealed he’s in talks with Liverpool over becoming part of Arne Slot’s coaching set-up.

Heitinga is currently out of work having left the Hammers with David Moyes at the end of last season.

It’s all change at the London Stadium with the newly appointed Julen Lopetegui now in charge, and the Hammers have been getting to work in strengthening their squad.

Heitinga reveals he’s in talks with Liverpool

Heitinga, a former Everton defender was surprisingly named as one of Moyes’ assistants last September and it appears he might not be out of work for long.

The 40-year-old could be set for an immediate return after revealing he’s been talks with Liverpool over becoming part of Slot’s coaching staff.

“The only thing I can say now is that I have been approached (by Liverpool) and that my agent Rob Jansen and I are in talks,” he told Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

Heitinga joined the Hammers after leaving Ajax following a short spell in charge of the Dutch giants.

The former defender spent five years playing for Liverpool’s rivals Everton but that doesn’t appear to be putting him off a potential link up with fellow countryman Slot, who appears to still be finalising his coaching staff ahead of the new season.

Whilst there’s plenty of change at West Ham this summer, there’s arguably more at Anfield following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, and Liverpool are somewhat heading into the unknown next season as they prepare for a new era under Slot.

Liverpool haven’t been active in the transfer market and are yet to make a signing, and maybe they are waiting until Slot has finalised his coaching staff before making an approach for any players, with the Reds needing to add to their squad having fallen away in the title race at the end of last season.

Slot’s coaching staff at Anfield is starting to come together, with The Athletic also reporting that former Manchester City analyst and coach Aaron Briggs is joining the Premier League giants as the Merseyside club’s new elite development coach — filling the role vacated by Vitor Matos at the end of last season.

David Moyes is in the market for a forward this January and it is believed that West Ham coach Johnny Heitinga is the driving force behind the Hammers’ pursuit of a Dutch target.

The London club have been short of options up top this season due to the injury of Michail Antonio and according to Dutch football journalist Mike Verweij, Heitinha is pursuing Ajax star Steven Bergwijn, who can be signed this month for as little as €30m (£25m).

The winger would be good value for money as he can play across all three forward positions but West Ham fans will hold some concerns given his last spell in the Premier League with Tottenham.

During his time with Spurs, the 26-year-old bagged just eight goals and 10 assists across 83 games, and failed to hold down a regular spot in the team before being sold to Ajax.

It will be interesting to see if West Ham push hard for Bergwijn as it is clear that Heitinga would love to have him at the London Stadium.
