Espanyol forward Martin Braithwaite has exercised his €600,000 release clause, terminating his contract and becoming a free agent.

This move has sparked interest from several Premier League clubs, including Everton, Southampton, and Leicester City.

Espanyol confirmed Braithwaite’s decision to activate the clause in an official statement, expressing gratitude for his professionalism and wishing him well in his future endeavors.

The club noted that he used the clause just before the deadline, ending his stint with the Spanish side a year before his contract was set to expire.

Premier League interest Martin Braithwaite

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Everton, Southampton, and Leicester City are all keen on signing Braithwaite on a free transfer. It is expected that Braithwaite will seek reimbursement for the amount he paid to Espanyol as part of any potential deal.

Braithwaite’s career has spanned several top European leagues. He previously played in England with Middlesbrough, making 40 appearances and scoring 9 goals.  Internationally, Braithwaite debuted for Denmark in 2013, earning 69 caps and scoring 10 goals. He has participated in major tournaments, showcasing his experience on the international stage. (Transfermarkt)

Braithwaite joined Espanyol in the summer of 2022 and made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut. Despite the club’s relegation in the 2022-23 season, he stayed and became the top scorer in the Segunda División with 22 goals, helping them secure promotion back to La Liga. However, his desire to not continue with the Spanish club led to his departure.

Leicester City are reportedly one of a number of clubs who have made an offer for Danish striker Martin Braithwaite, along with fellow Premier League sides Everton and Southampton.

According to Football Espana, Braithwaite has been offered a contract by these three clubs after leaving Espanyol, while there could also be the opportunity to stay in Spain with Valencia and Getafe.

Braithwaite scored 22 goals in La Liga last season, so clearly has the potential to make an impact for any of the clubs mentioned, with Leicester certainly in need of someone proven and experienced like that after winning promotion back to the Premier League.

Braithwaite might not be the most glamorous name in world football, but if he could move to the Foxes on a free he could surely have a decent impact given the low cost of the deal.

It seems for now the 33-year-old is weighing up his options, so it will be interesting to see if he picks the King Power Stadium over other the other clubs pursuing him.

Leicester need a good transfer window after a difficult start to the summer, which has seen them lose their manager Enzo Maresca and star player Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea.

Chelsea and Arsenal have been offered the opportunity to sign the Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite.

The 32-year-old has been in impressive form for Espanyol in the second division, scoring 11 goals across all competitions. He is currently the top scorer in the second tier of Spanish football.

However, a report from HITC football claims that Arsenal and Chelsea have been made aware of his potential availability this month. It will be interesting to see if the London clubs decide to make a move for him before the window closes. The report further states that the striker could be available for just £5 million.

Arsenal need to bring in a quality striker who can score goals consistently and Braithwaite could prove to be a useful option. Gabriel Jesus has got just three goals in the league this season and the Gunners need more quality in the final third if they want to win the league title.

On the other hand, Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson to solve their goalscoring problems at the start of the season, but the 22-year-old striker has not been able to live up to the expectations. His performances have been quite mediocre and the Blues could certainly use a new signing.

Martin Braithwaite has played for Barcelona in the past

The 32-year-old Denmark international will be attracted to the idea of playing in the Premier League and the opportunity to join big clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea can be quite tempting.

It would be an exciting new challenge at this stage of his career and he will look to prove his quality in the English top flight.

The Red Devils have reportedly been offered the chance to sign former Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite.

Erik ten Hag’s side faces an uphill battle in the second half of the season as they aim to narrow the gap between them and the top four.

Like the majority of sides in the Premier League, Manchester United have been hit with numerous injuries to key players and have struggled to field their best eleven since the start of the season.

This hasn’t been helped by their toothless attack who have failed to produce a consistent goal-scoring output with Rasmus Hojlund only recently grabbing his first two goals in the league.

It is no surprise then that they have been heavily linked with a new number nine with the latest report from HITC via TeamTalk claiming that they have been offered former Barcelona striker, Braithwaite.

The 32-year-old striker is currently the top scorer in La Liga 2, the Spanish second division, after his side Espanyol were relegated last campaign.

With 11 goals to his name so far, he is reportedly keen on a return to a top European side and has been offered to Manchester United as well as Chelsea per the report.

Hello guys and welcome to my second briefing of the day as things move quickly on Deadline Day – read on for updates on Arthur, Douglas Luiz and more!

AC Milan

Sergino Dest is currently undergoing first part of medical tests as new AC Milan player. Barcelona were ready to let him go. He joins on an initial loan with a permanent buy option.

Arsenal

Arsenal are in talks over signing Douglas Luiz. He wants to leave Aston Villa, so personal terms won’t be an issue, but discussions taking place over £20m fee.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has signed a new contract until 2024 with Arsenal before moving on loan to Southampton.

There’s no Arsenal bid for Mykhaylo Mudryk – Shakhtar Donetsk expect him to stay, they’ve also rejected other offers. Arsenal have held an interest, but nothing more concrete so far.

Aston Villa

Leander Dendoncker is on his way to Aston Villa – it’s a done deal. £13m fee agreed, with his medical taking place this afternoon.

Barcelona

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks set to leave for Chelsea, with Marcos Alonso moving to Barcelona as part of the deal.

Hector Bellerin to Barcelona is on – he’ll join until 2023 after an agreement to terminate his contract at Arsenal.

Despite reports to the contrary, Memphis Depay is now closer to staying at Barcelona rather than leaving.

Chelsea

Chelsea and Barcelona have finally reached an agreement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The fee will be €14m, plus Marcos Alonso moving in the opposite direction. Aubameyang will be in London tonight and sign a two-year contract with the option of one more.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea is nearly done

Despite reports, my understanding is that there are no advanced talks over Memphis Depay – Aubameyang remains Chelsea’s priority. As I said earlier, though, Depay is one to watch on Deadline Day – find out more here.

Kenedy is in Spain ahead of a possible move to Valladolid. His agents are working on the deal with the La Liga club.

Espanyol

Martin Braithwaite is having a medical with Espanyol as he looks set to terminate his contract with Barcelona and move on a free transfer. He’ll sign a contract until 2025 with Barca’s rivals.

Everton

Everton submitted a formal bid of £25m plus £5m in add-ons on Wednesday for Joao Pedro: Watford have turned the offer down – they have no intention to let him go.

Fulham

Layvin Kurzawa has signed his contract as a new Fulham player. He’s joining on loan from PSG – it’s now a done deal.

Daniel James is set to join Fulham on loan from Leeds. Tottenham were also interested, as I revealed earlier.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Willian is another incoming player for Fulham – he’s just signed a contract with the club and it’s a done deal.

Getafe

Jordan Amavi to Getafe, deal done. He’s flying to Spain in the next few hours to sign the contract after a move to Olympiacos fell through a few days ago.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan are set to seal the loan signing of Francesco Acerbi from Lazio. It will include the option to make the transfer permanent, but has no effect on the future of Milan Skriniar.

Leeds

Leeds are set to sign Bamba Dieng from Marseille for €10m – he joins as a replacement for Daniel James, who is moving on loan to Fulham.

Cody Gakpo was a target for Leeds, but he’s now set to stay at PSV. Leeds could try again for the Dutch winger in January.

Leicester City

Official, confirmed. Wout Faes joins Leicester on permanent deal from Reims as the club’s replacement for Wesley Fofana.

Leicester are also still working on a deal to sign Jeremie Boga from Atalanta.

Still no update on Youri Tielemans – I’m not aware of a bid from a mystery club. Personally, as I wrote earlier, I think he could have been perfect for Liverpool.

Liverpool

Arthur to Liverpool – here we go! He’s flown to the UK for his medical, with contracts all signed for loan deal valid until June 2023, with no purchase option.

Manchester City

Done deal, officially confirmed – Manuel Akanji has completed a transfer to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for a deal worth €17.5m.

Sam Edozie and Juan Larios are going to join Southampton, as first revealed yesterday – now medicals ongoing for both. Both players have buy-back clauses inserted into the deal by Manchester City.

Manchester United

Erik ten Hag is convinced Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at Manchester United – exclusive insight here.

Tahith Chong to Birmingham City is a done deal. He’s set to take a significant pay cut to leave Manchester United permanently, with a medical scheduled.

Nottingham Forest

Official, confirmed: Willy Boly has completed a move to Nottingham Forest on a permanent deal from Wolves.

RB Leipzig

Official: Josko Gvardiol has extended his contract with RB Leipzig until June 2027, with Chelsea’s €90m bid turned down yesterday. There wasn’t enough time to complete the agreement, so talks for Gvardiol to Chelsea in 2023 will continue in January.

Official, confirmed. Abdou Diallo is joining RB Leipzig on loan from PSG, with the option to make the deal permanent for €25m.

Southampton

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has completed his medical to finalise a move to Southampton. He’s joining on a season-long loan with the option to make the move permanent.

Southampton are in talks to sign Maxime Lacroix. It won’t be easy but negotiations are ongoing between Southampton and Wolfsburg.

Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite has reportedly refused to leave the club on a free transfer unless the Blaugrana pay him out of the rest of his contract – leaving the club in financial limbo after making various multi-million-pound signings over the summer.

With their financial worries being well documented, many have been perplexed to see Xavi’s men take up the signings of Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres, Raphinha, Jules Kounde and Franck Kessie over the past six months.

The Spanish giants have reportedly refused to pay Frenkie de Jong the £14m he took in deferrals to help the club’s books during the pandemic ahead of a proposed move to Manchester United, and it appears they are forcing other players out who remain surplus to requirements.

Yet according to Sport (as relayed by the Daily Mail), Braithwaite is refusing to listen to club chiefs over an agreed pay package – with the Dane set to collect the final two years of his wage at the Nou Camp.

Xavi is doing an excellent job at Barcelona, although he will be hoping the star leaves so that he can register other players

With a contract that runs until 2024, the infamous emergency signing from Leganes will undoubtedly be on a bigger wage than the one he was earning at the Madrid-based club, and likely will earn for the rest of his career.

After being offered a ‘letter of freedom’ that would allow the striker to decide his future, this was swiftly rejected as he remained defiant he would not be forced out of the club over the summer.

MORE: “Unacceptable” – Erik ten Hag blasts Cristiano Ronaldo for recent decision

Essentially fifth-choice striker behind Lewandowski, Aubameyang, Torres and want-away striker Memphis Depay, it would be surprising to see if Braithwaite would make more than the measly five appearances he made last season.

And club chiefs are reportedly displeased with the manner of their players for refusing to bow to their demands.

The financial situation at Barcelona has led to all sorts of bizarre transfers taking place in recent seasons. When Adama Traore rejoined Barcelona in January, it meant that the Catalan club possessed two of Middlesbrough’s front three during their most recent successful promotion campaign to the Premier League.

Traore looks as if he will be back in England this summer and Brentford are hoping to bring back Braithwaite too. The Danish forward was ruled out for almost the entirety of the first half of the season, but on his return barely featured for Barcelona. Manager Xavi Hernandez has shown that he didn’t trust Braithwaite, sending him onto the pitch for just 22 minutes since he returned from injury in mid-January.

Martin Braithwaite played just 4 times last season.
Braithwaite is expected to be part of a reshaping of the squad in Barcelona and Spanish paper Sport believe that Brentford may be his destination. That said, the player himself has always been adamant that he would be staying at the club and reaffirmed his desire to see out his contract recently, which expires in 2024.

Barcelona are reportedly planning a major clear-out in their first-team squad this summer in order to raise transfer funds.

Among those leaving could be Dutch forward Memphis Depay, according to El Nacional, while others like Philippe Coutinho and Clement Lenglet are also mentioned.

Depay only joined Barca from Lyon last summer, but hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, and it looks like his stay at the Nou Camp could be short-lived.

This could be of interest to Arsenal, who need to strengthen up front this summer and who have been linked with Depay by Sport in recent times.

The Gunners have suffered since allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to join Barcelona in January, but that could now help them as it seems to have contributed to pushing Depay out of the club.

Memphis Depay could leave Barcelona

Tottenham have also been linked with Depay in a recent report from Mundo Deportivo, and they would also surely benefit from having the 28-year-old in their squad.

Spurs have often been overly reliant on Harry Kane, but Depay could take the pressure off the England front-man and give Antonio Conte’s side something a bit different in attack.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham are the main two teams competing for a top four spot this season and one imagines that could end up being crucial when it comes to  attracting players like Depay.

Barcelona is desperate to sign Leeds United winger Raphinha and according to recent reports, could even throw one of their own players into a potential deal.

That’s according to recent reports in the Spanish press, who claim the Catalan giants are willing to part ways with any one of four players as they look to try and convince Leeds United to sell Raphinha.

It has been claimed that Xavi is willing to offer Clement Lenglet, Martin Braithwaite, Sergino Dest and Oscar Mingueza, although the latter is believed to be only a loan option, in exchange for Raphinha.

With the likes of Lenglet and Dest seemingly out of favour with Xavi, now could be the perfect time for Jesse Marsch’s Whites to capitalise, and although admitting defeat when it comes to retaining Raphinha will be a bitter pill to swallow, now is about getting the very best deal possible.
