Newcastle United have focused more on their sales so far this summer as compared to signing new players.

The Magpies were in trouble about the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and in order to comply with the regulations, they needed to sell players first.

Eddie Howe’s team have signed defender Lloyd Kelly this summer and he remains their only prominent signing so far.

As far as outgoings are concerned, Newcastle have sold both Yankuba Minteh and Elliott Anderson, players that Howe wanted to keep at the club but could not due to financial constraints.

Recently, Howe said he wasn’t actually interested in selling Anderson and Minteh in an interview that was published by The Guardian.

“We didn’t want to lose anybody,” the 46-year-old said.

“Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions but in those last few weeks it was very, very difficult.

“It was a very difficult last couple of weeks of June. There was a lot of uncertainty and we didn’t know what was going to happen. The rules forced us to do things we didn’t want to do.

“I want to make that clear we didn’t want to sell any of the players we sold. Absolutely not. Why would we want to sell any of our promising young players? Elliot’s someone we’ve invested a lot of time in and it defied the inner feeling we all had associated with the club, it felt wrong.”

The Magpies are now set to enter the market to sign a new right-winger and possibly an attacker who can provide competition for Alexander Isak and play as his back-up.

The Toon Army need depth in their squad in order to avoid deal with the injury crisis they suffered last season.

It would appear that Newcastle United are aiming to get much of their transfer business done early in this summer’s window.

With Financial Fair Play in mind, the North East giants will have more headroom in the market if they’re able to offload players that are perhaps now considered to be surplus to requirements.

Both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh have recently left the club, and it seems that Eddie Howe isn’t quite finished with Newcastle’s outgoing business just yet.

According to Sky Sports, the Magpies are in talks with a Saudi Pro League club for the signature of Miguel Almiron.

Miguel Almiron set to leave Newcastle

Now 30 years of age, the Paraguayan international can no longer be considered a first-choice for Newcastle when everyone is fit.

Whilst that’s to be expected when your club is trying to build for a future which apparently includes bringing through younger players, that’s still likely to hit Almiron hard.

Newcastle's Miguel Almiron is likely to move to the Saudi Pro League
Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron is likely to move to the Saudi Pro League

After all, he’s long been a part of the Magpies success, and was the player who started things off on that famous night against Paris Saint-Germain last season.

His experience in and around the place could be invaluable to Newcastle, though if he’s only going to be utilised in fits and starts, his is a position that could easily be filled by another, younger exponent.

It seems clear that the Saudi Public Investment Fund are preparing to make a splash in the market where possible.

Rightly so too, as if the club want to get back to the top table of both domestic and European football, key areas need to be targeted.

The Saudi club that Almiron is linked with hasn’t yet been mentioned, though it appears to be a foregone conclusion that the player will soon be on his way out of the Premier League club.

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to try hijacking West Ham United’s move for Wolves defender Max Kilman by offering a player in return.

According to reports, the Magpies are lining up a cash-plus-player deal for Kilman, with young midfielder Elliot Anderson the player on offer to Wolves in the exchange.

Anderson has long been highly rated at St James’ Park, but it seems he’s now available as there’s perhaps too much competition for places in this Newcastle side.

Kilman would be a fine signing for a number of Premier League clubs, but Financial Fair Play is making deals complicated for many teams this summer, with a large number of swap deals going through at the moment.

Making some ‘pure profit’ from a youngster like Anderson could be smart business by NUFC, which can also help get Kilman’s price down.

It will be interesting to see if West Ham can respond and move back into pole position for this deal.

It isn’t clear just how long it will take for Dan Ashworth to be officially installed at Man United, with the 52-year-old currently on gardening leave from Newcastle.

The rise of the Magpies since they were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has as much to do with Ashworth as anyone else in the St. James’ Park food chain.

As a result, his loss is likely to be keenly felt at the club, particularly by the likes of Eddie Howe and assistant manager, Jason Tindall.

His influence on the club since joining can be seen in one particular decision that he made which meant that Newcastle didn’t end up signing players.

According to inews (subscription required), the club were looking at attacking midfielders but Ashworth talked them out of it because he believed that Elliot Anderson was perfect for the role.

As it turned out, he was exactly right and has no doubt saved the club a pretty in the process.

It’s likely to be one of a number of good business decisions that helped set the club on the right path.

His own path now appears to be at Old Trafford where he’ll likely want to be trying to repeat the same tricks again.

Eddie Howe’s team delivered a disappointing performance, suffering a significant 2-0 defeat in Germany against Borussia Dortmund. The result and performance highlighted their ongoing injury crisis.

That being said, the match served as a stark reminder of how much Newcastle United must progress to become a well-rounded and competitive side in the Champions League, emphasising the need for greater squad depth.

Despite these challenges, there’s potential for them to become a formidable force in European football with additional skill and tactics.

Howe’s post-game comments underlined his commitment to improvement without without making excuses. However, with only 13 senior outfield players and Callum Wilson’s early departure due to a hamstring issue, the team is severely constrained in realising its potential in this crucial season for the Toon Army.

The squad’s lack of depth is glaring, and the forthcoming Premier League ruling on squad additions from clubs in Saudi Arabia could impact their plans for the January transfer window. Newcastle were reportedly preparing for the arrival of Ruben Neves on loan from Al-Hilal, but these plans could be scuppered.

Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Harvey Barnes, Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy, Matt Targett, Javier Manquillo, Elliot Anderson are all set to miss the Magpies trip to Bournemouth on Saturday evening. Along with Sandro Tonali (long-term suspension) and Bruno Guimaraes who has picked up a match ban due to picking up five yellow cards.

The size of the task awaiting Newcastle United in the Champions League has been put into perspective with the sheer size of their growing injury list.

With so much more pressure and at least six extra matches against top-tier European teams when compared to last season, it was obvious that any injuries and suspensions that may arise were going to hurt the Magpies.

Another loss to Borussia Dortmund has made their task even harder given that Eddie Howe’s side have got to win both of their remaining games to given themselves any chance of qualification to the knockout stages, and even then they will be relying on other results going their way.

According to Premier Injuries, their current injury troubles – they have 11 players out – will only be slightly reduced by the time of the PSG match.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are both expected to be back for the Chelsea game the previous weekend, however, the news isn’t so good for nine other players.

Sven Botman isn’t due back until December 10, with Elliot Anderson the next best case scenario of a Boxing Day return.

Harvey Barnes, Dan Burn and Jacob Murphy aren’t due back until various dates in January, whilst Sandro Tonali is banned until next August.

Callum Wilson, Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett don’t even have a return date as yet, so if the Magpies were to tumble out of Europe, the blame can’t be attached to Howe or his backroom staff, because that’s an unprecedented injury list at one of the most crucial times of the season.

After going 1-0 down early on, Newcastle managed to fight back to gain a 2-1 lead. However a late goal from West Ham in the 89th minute secured a draw for the Hammers, and meant Newcastle dropped two points.

West Ham took the lead through Tomas Soucek in the 8th minute, and went in at halftime 1-0 up. However a quickfire double from Alexander Isak in the 57th and 62nd minute fired Newcastle into the lead. Looking like they was going to take all three points, they had it snatched from under their noses in the 89th minute when Mohammed Kudus scored to equalise for West Ham and secure a point.

Read on for our Newcastle player ratings, and who stood out for the Magpies…

Nick Pope – 5 – Pope only made one save, but did have two punches and three high claims. He made a big error for the first West Ham goal though, caught out in no mans land for Emerson Palmieri to take it round him and pass it to Tomas Soucek for an easy tap in.

Dan Burn – 7 – Burn played well and kept Jarrod Bowen quiet down the flank, making three clearances and one interception. Burn also made one key pass from left back and created one big chances for Newcastle which isn’t usually his forte.

Fabian Schar – 7 – Schar did his job defensively, making a whopping nine clearances along with one tackle and one interception. Schar also attempted 10 long balls, four of which were successful.

Jamaal Lascelles – 7 – Lascelles also contributed positively in defence, making three clearances, two tackles and winning six out of his nine aerial duels. He also contributed in possession with 64 successful passes out of 74 attempted, giving him an 85% passing accuracy.

Kieran Trippier – 8 – Trippier really added attacking threat down the right for Newcastle, getting his assist for Isak’s second goal. Trippier made five key passes, created one big chance and made eight accurate long passes out of 10 attempted.

Sandro Tonali – 6 – Tonali didn’t have his best game, barely getting involved physically in the middle of the park, having zero aerial duels won or attempted, as well as only having one defensive action in the whole game (one tackle). Didn’t impose himself in this one.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6 – Was slightly more involved in central duels than Tonali with two defensive actions and one aerial duel attempted, but was a similar story, didn’t impost himself on the game and could have received two yellows in the first half.

Sean Longstaff – 5 – Longstaff also struggled alongside the other midfielders, having no defensive actions made, no aerial duels attempted, and picked up a yellow card. Also had the least touches and passes made for Newcastle in midfield.

Elliot Anderson – 6.5- Anderson played slightly further forward than he usually does for the Magpies, getting two shots off (both off target) and completing two out of two dribbles. He also made one key pass.

Alexander Isak – 8.5 – Scored the important goals and took them well. Got Newcastle back in the game when they needed it, and could’ve had a hatrick. Made great runs in behind all afternoon and caused West Ham problems.

Miguel Almiron – 6 – Not a very productive game for Almiron, only taking the one shot off target, and only attempting one cross which was unsuccessful. He was booked in the second half too, so was not a performance to remember.

Subs: Jacob Murphy 5, Callum Wilson 4, Matt Targett N/A.

Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson is reportedly not injured after all, and could be in contention to play in this weekend’s game against Brentford.

Despite a scare whilst being on international duty with Scotland, the 20-year-old now seems fully fit and is expected to be able to be available for Eddie Howe when his side host Brentford at St James’ Park this Saturday.

Anderson has established himself as a highly regarded young player, and is already a regular in the Newcastle first-team.

The Scotland international has also represented England at youth level, and has been the subject of something of a tug-of-war between the two national sides.

Elliot Anderson has been called up to the latest Scotland squad confirming his decision to represent the Scots over England.

Manager Steve Clark has included the 20-year-old in his squad for matches against Cyprus in a Euro 2024 qualifier on September 8 and a friendly against England on September 12.

This confirms the Newcastle star’s decision to play for Clark’s team over England, the nation in which the midfielder was born, having represented the Three Lions at U-19 level.

Anderson played just once for the nation of his birth and represented Scotland more often at youth level. Therefore, it makes more sense for the Newcastle star to join the Tartan Army and fans will be excited to have the talented Premier League youngster within their ranks.

Elliot Anderson made a rare and brief appearance during Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday.

After joining their youth academy back in 2010, Anderson, 20, has spent his entire career with the Magpies and was promoted to the club’s senior first team last summer.

Since then, the 20-year-old has featured in 21 matches, in all competitions, including making one start in the Premier League.

However, with Callum Wilson a vastly more experienced centre-forward and Alexander Isak being signed from Real Sociedad for a record-breaking £63m (Sky Sports) last summer, Anderson is way down in Eddie Howe’s pecking order.

Consequently, despite having three years left on his deal, according to transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano, the young Whitley Bay-born hitman is facing an uncertain future.

“A decision on what to do with Elliot Anderson next season has not yet been made,” Romano said in his exclusive column.

“I’m told Eddie Howe asked the team and the club to be totally focused on qualifying for the Champions League before they make any decision – this is also why no talks are taking place for new signings yet – Newcastle will take their time.

“They are happy with Elliot’s impact and development but his future is open and undecided at the moment.”

Newcastle fans will probably be hoping to see more of Anderson this season, but knowing how close the side are to qualifying for the Champions League, the risk of introducing an inexperienced forward attacker may not be the best decision at this stage of the season.

Nevertheless though, with Anderson one of the Toon’s own having come through all of their youth ranks, a fairytale outcome for the midfielder would undoubtedly be to continue his growth at the club he has called home for the past 13 years.
