It’s only been a short while since Gareth Southgate resigned from the England job, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation that Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe, would be the perfect replacement.

That neatly bypasses the fact that there’s a due diligence process that needs to be gone through by the Football Association in the first instance, and that the Magpies board would almost certainly turn down any FA request to speak to Howe.

Newcastle hold clear-the-air talks with Eddie Howe

Given how brilliantly Howe’s teams play football, and his tactical understanding of the game, it’s no real surprise that the FA would want to at least test the waters and see where the land lies.

Recent comments attributed to the Newcastle manager have, apparently, pushed the club’s board into clear-the-air talks with Howe, according to The Telegraph (subscription required).

Eddie Howe has been heavily linked with the England job.
Eddie Howe has been heavily linked with the England job.

There has to be a degree of worry for those talks to have been initiated, and indeed, the outlet detail Newcastle’s CEO, Darren Eales, describing Howe as “phenomenal,” which clearly evidences the esteem which the 46-year-old is held in by the St. James’ Park hierarchy.

It seems that comments Howe has made to the media about being happy if he continues to be supported in doing his work as he has been to this point is what has blindsided the Newcastle board.

Though the manager hasn’t explicitly said he would take the England job, there was enough in his statements to hint at it being a possibility if the direction that Newcastle were taking took some of Howe’s power away.

Paul Mitchell having replaced Dan Ashworth as sporting director should arguably be a seamless transition, however, if the new man wants more say in transfer dealings, thereby weakening Howe’s position, that is just one area of contention that could see the latter walk in due course.

Newcastle are in the market for a centre-back this summer and their new sporting director Paul Mitchell is very keen on Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.

The French defender is expected to leave the Ligue 1 club this summer with several sides interested in his services ahead of the new campaign.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has only seen one outfield player join his ranks so far during the transfer window, with Lloyd Kelly arriving to strengthen his defensive options. The English coach would like another centre-back as the Magpies enter the 2024/25 campaign with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles still carrying significant injury issues.

According to Alex Crook, Newcastle have now opened talks with Todibo over a potential move with Mitchell said to be spearheading the pursuit.

However, a deal is very unlikely as Juventus and West Ham are leading the race for the 24-year-old.

CaughtOffside reported this week that West Ham hope to sign Todibo on loan for one season with a €32m buy option attached to the deal. The defender has already been offered a contract until 2029/2030 by the Premier League outfit, but the French star would prefer a move to Juventus.

Todibo’s priority is to move to the Italian giants this summer as they can offer him Champions League football and that has been reaffirmed to the Serie A club during a recent meeting with the player’s agent.

Juventus are prepared to meet Nice’s €32m asking price after initial hesitations, which puts them firmly in the driving seat for the French centre-back.

The coming Premier League season is a hugely important one for Newcastle United.

After missing out on Europe altogether due in no small part to the injuries sustained to key players after a gruelling 2023/24 campaign, which included their first foray into the Champions League for over 20 years, Eddie Howe knows he has no excuse not to have the club riding high again.

Whilst a lack of revenue from those special European nights could hit home where Financial Fair Play is concerned, the rest and recuperation that the Magpies players will have compared to those teams expected to be in and around them next season, is likely to be of huge benefit.

Eddie Howe wants Newcastle to keep hold of Callum Wilson

Although pre-season is already underway, transfer dealings will soon come to the fore, and as The Northern Echo note, Howe will be spelling out the reasons to Paul Mitchell as to why he wants to keep hold of striker, Callum Wilson.

Though the player is believed to be the subject of interest to West Ham, it’s clear Howe wants him retained for at least one more season.

Ahead of the new Premier League season, Newcastle United are putting the building blocks in place to ensure they can improve on their showing in 2023/24.

Having to negotiate a Champions League campaign on top of their domestic commitments last season took its toll, with a number of first-team players out injured and some for long periods.

Newcastle set to land Paul Mitchell’s former Monaco colleague

The summer has given Eddie Howe and his backroom staff the chance to do a hard reset, which has also included the loss of sporting director, Dan Ashworth.

Far from wallowing in their own self pity at losing a man who was seemingly as important to the Magpies as Howe, the club quickly brought in Paul Mitchell, and he is believed to have requested the hire of James Bunce, according to Daily Mail journalist and Newcastle insider, Craig Hope.

Bunce worked with Mitchell whilst the pair were at Ligue Un side, AS Monaco, and Bunce’s hire will surely only serve to strengthen Newcastle as the club move forward.

Newcastle United are planning a £100m summer spending spree this summer after appointing Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director.

The Magpies moved swiftly to replace the outgoing Dan Ashworth, who has joined Manchester United after just over two years at St. James’ Park.

Mitchell was most recently in charge of affairs at French side AS Monaco but has also enjoyed spells calling the shots at Tottenham and Southampton — where he was responsible for the signings of Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Sadio Mane, respectively.

Newcastle are one of a number of clubs currently battling against Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and despite already raising handsome sums for Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson — who joined Brighton and Nottingham Forest, respectively — face the prospect of losing more players.

Bruno Guimaraes one of the club’s biggest stars still seriously linked with an exit from St. James’ Park, alongside the likes of Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak.

Newcastle plot £100m summer spend

Naturally, Eddie Howe will be desperate to make sure he doesn’t lose any more key players from his squad.

But regardless, he will be backed by a strong budget for incoming players in this summer’s transfer market, with The Telegraph reporting the powers that be at Newcastle are freeing up £100m.

It’s understood that a new right-footed forward and left-footed centre-back are at the top of Howe’s wishlist now that Mitchell has taken up his new role.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe will demand the club sign a new centre-back and right-sided forward this summer, according to reports.

The Magpies face an uncertain summer in the transfer market, with star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes linked with an exit and the club still walking a fine line when it comes to Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Newcastle were able to raise handsome sums with the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest, respectively.

Those sales should at least free up some funds for Howe to strengthen his squad after failing to qualify for Europe last season.

In fact, according to The Telegraph, the former Bournemouth boss will have £100m to spend in the market.

Howe demands two key positions at Newcastle

On Thursday, Newcastle announced Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director following the departure of Dan Ashworth to Manchester United.

Mitchell was most recently on the books of French club AS Monaco, but has spent time with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the past.

At Spurs, the 42-year-old was responsible for the signings of Dele Alli and Son Heung-min, while he also brought Sadio Mane to Southampton.

And according to The Telegraph’s report, Mitchell’s first job at St. James’ Park will be to help find a new centre-back and right-sided forward for Howe — who is looking to add serious depth to his squad after suffering with a major injury crisis last season.

Newcastle United have appointed Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director following Dan Ashworth’s move to Manchester United.

The Magpies moved quickly to replace Ashworth, who, after extensive negotiations, finally joined Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s senior management team.

Consequently, Newcastle United have been forced to sound out a new sporting director in time for the remainder of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United appoint Paul Mitchell as sporting director

And Mitchell is their man — linked with both Manchester United and Liverpool in the past, the Magpies have successfully agreed terms with one of Europe’s most well-respected sporting directors.

Paul Mitchell has agreed to become Newcastle United’s new sporting director.

Speaking to the club’s official website about his next role, Mitchell, 43, said: “It’s with immense pride that I accept the responsibility of being Newcastle United’s new sporting director.

“I’ve seen the recent growth and ambition of the club. This, plus the amazing fan base, made the decision to join an easy one.

“I can’t wait to get started and help continue the organisation’s growth and long-term competitiveness in all areas of elite football performance.”

Prior to becoming a sporting director, Mitchell was forced into early playing retirement due to injuries. However, now responsible for club’s transfer strategies, the 43-year-old boasts an impressive CV having previously worked with the likes of RB Leipzig, Tottenham Hotspur and AS Monaco.

“We are delighted to welcome Paul to Newcastle United,” club CEO Darren Eales added.

“He brings a successful track record and wealth of experience to the club.

“His extensive and diverse experience in football leadership, cultural change and recruitment mean he is the ideal person to lead our sporting directorate.

“We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him in our pursuit of long-term, sustainable success.”

According to sources, Paul Mitchell, the Monaco chief, is eager to take on the role of sporting director at Newcastle United.

The 42-year-old was mentioned in The Telegraph last week as being open to returning to the Premier League, where he has experience working with Southampton and Spurs.

According to HITC’s Graeme Bailey, Mitchell is now interested in the Newcastle position that is open, having been identified as the top candidate by Magpies for that position.

Newcastle eyeing move for Mitchell

Currently working for Monaco in Ligue 1, Mitchell was formerly employed by RB Leipzig, where he signed talented players including Patrik Schick, Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku.

While Bailey has one good news for Newcastle fans, the other is not so great.

According to the journalist, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain scouts were present at the weekend to watch Newcastle star in action.

Paul Mitchell to Newcastle United?

Chiefs from Real Madrid and PSG are said to have watched Bruno Guimaraes, and the French powerhouses also observed Alexander Isak.

Goncalo Ramos, the team’s current striker, and Kylian Mbappe, who is headed to Real Madrid, are said to be leaving in the summer.

Newcastle could be forced to sell players

A number of players have been linked with moves away from St. James’ Park. Eddie Howe could at least lose one big player in order to follow the Financial Fair Play regulations.

The player expected to depart the club could either be Guimaraes or Isak, someone who could be able to generate funds for the club.

Another player linked with an exit from the Premier League club is Paraguayan winger Miguel Almiron.

It’s no secret that Newcastle’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, is on his way to Man United, and though the Magpies have put the 53-year-old on extended gardening leave, it appears that they’re now keen to get him out of the door.

His departure hasn’t necessarily left a sour taste in the mouth at St. James’ Park, but Eddie Howe and owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), understand the need to move on, which they’re unable to do whilst Ashworth is sat in the background.

Newcastle want Dan Ashworth out as soon as practicable

The reason he hasn’t yet begun his new role at Old Trafford is because Newcastle are demanding a compensation figure as high as £20m for his services, something that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has, thus far, refused to pay.

Newcastle need Dan Ashworth gone so they can pursue a new sporting director
Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth

The Telegraph (subscription required) note that the North East giants now want to move quickly to replace Ashworth, with Paul Mitchell being touted as an early favourite.

West Ham’s Tim Steidten, Brentford’s Phil Giles and Tiago Pinto are also mentioned in dispatches as potential candidates.

It appears that Mitchell is the man Newcastle want however, and in order for him to join the club before the summer transfer window, there’ll need to be some negotiation on Ashworth’s compensation figure.

Manchester United have three main transfer targets in defence as they make a centre-back signing a priority for later in 2024, CaughtOffside understands.

The Red Devils are unlikely to make a big splash in the market this January as they formalise plans to revamp their recruitment team, but sources have indicated to CaughtOffside that this could be nearing a positive conclusion with the appointments of both Dan Ashworth and Paul Mitchell.

Later in the year, we could see Man Utd enter the market for a significant signing in defence, with three big names under consideration – Jean-Clair Todibo, Antonio Silva, and Matthijs de Ligt.

Todibo has been monitored closely for some time and there had even been speculation about a move happening this January, though it has long looked clear that Nice were not prepared to sell the France international in the middle of the season.

Jean-Clair Todibo to Manchester United?

MUFC are maintaining positive contacts with Nice now in order to put themselves in a good position for the summer, but any talks happening now seem unlikely to lead to anything happening this January.

Silva, meanwhile, continues to impress a host of Europe’s top clubs at Benfica, with Paris Saint-Germain thought to be showing the strongest interest, though United are there as well.

Finally, De Ligt is unsettled at Bayern Munich and it could be that he’d be open to reuniting with his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

In terms of this January, Anthony Martial is one name who could leave in the final days of the window, but it seems increasingly likely he’ll move on a free in the summer as his wages are proving an obstacle now.
