Arsenal are closing in on the transfer of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, and it’s fair to say Juventus and Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci is disappointed to see the player leaving Serie A for the Premier League.

While it’s not a done deal yet, Fabrizio Romano reported via his Daily Briefing column yesterday that it should be a ‘here we go’ for Calafiori to Arsenal soon, and it seems Bonucci is also very much expecting his fellow countryman to make the move to the Emirates Stadium.

The 22-year-old shone for Bologna last season and also looked impressive at Euro 2024 this summer, and Bonucci admits he’s disappointed that his former club Juventus didn’t manage to sign him this summer.

It was perhaps always going to be difficult for Juve after they also raided Bologna for their former manager Thiago Motta, but Arsenal will just be happy either way to have landed such an exciting defensive prospect.

Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal looks a hugely significant signing

Bonucci was a rock-solid centre-back during his peak years and the fact that he rates Calafiori so highly can only be considered a big compliment.

Calafiori transfer: Bonucci disappointed to see Arsenal beat Juventus to defender

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia about Calafiori and his move to Arsenal, Bonucci said: “Calafiori? I’m sorry about his transfer. I would have liked to see him at Juventus.

“He’s a defender who’s a little different to what we’re used to seeing. He plays, has personality and fits in.

“We’re exporting a great player who will be a point of reference for the national team for the next 15 years.”

The message couldn’t be clearer: Arsenal are set to sign a huge talent and someone Bonucci expects to be a ‘reference’ for the Italian national team for the next decade and more.

AFC supporters will now just be hoping this deal can be made official as soon as possible so that Calafiori can get all the benefits of a long pre-season and time to settle in with his new club.

Leonardo Bonucci says he hopes Federico Chiesa remains at Juventus amid reports of a move to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

Chiesa has notched 32 goals and 23 assists in 131 appearances across all competitions since joining Juventus from Fiorentina in 2020, winning two Coppa Italia titles along the way.

However, there has always been a feeling that Chiesa has never quite reached his full potential with the Old Lady, often struggling with fitness and consistency issues.

Newcastle United have been linked with the 26-year-old in the past but more recently, sources have informed CaughtOffside that Spurs have tabled a bid for the winger.

Chiesa has just one more year left to run on his contract at Juventus who, reportedly left him and Weston McKennie at home as they departed for a pre-season camp in Germany.

But according to the same source, Juventus have also sent a contract offer to the 51-time Italy international — who played four times at Euro 2024 this summer.

Bonucci discusses Chiesa’s Juventus future

Juventus legend Bonucci — who played over 500 times for Juventus across two spells, winning eight Serie A titles and playing in two Champions League finals — has admitted Chiesa needs to ‘take another step’ before he can be classed among the world’s elite players.

However, the former centre-back insisted he hopes Chiesa reaches that level as a Juventus player.

“I think he needs to understand what it is that he wants,” Bonucci said of Chiesa (via Football Italia).

“In recent years, he had difficulties in terms of physicality and character, now he needs to take another step to become a top player. I hope he will be at Juventus.”

Union Berlin’s centre-back, Leonardo Bonucci, has singled out Manchester United’s Harry Maguire for praise, acknowledging how the defender bounced back after falling out of favour under manager Erik ten Hag last season.

Harry Maguire faced a challenging period, starting only half of the 16 Premier League games he played during the 2022/23 season. This situation arose as he fell behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof in the defensive hierarchy at Manchester United.

Manchester United considered selling Maguire in the summer, and as a result, he began the 2023/24 season as a squad player after a potential transfer away from the club did not materialise.

But the England international has made a strong comeback under Erik ten Hag, featuring regularly in recent months and starting nine out of the 11 Premier League games he has played in, earning praise from Italy legend Leonardo Bonucci.

Bonucci told The Sun: “For me, Harry is an example. After all the stick and attacks he’s received, he still plays at Manchester United and is a regular for England. That’s indicative of his mental strength. Maguire is a rocky and tough defender.”

Maguire’s resilience and strong performances this season highlight his determination and value to Manchester United, especially after facing challenges and uncertainty about his future at the club.

No Man United bid for En-Nesyri and don’t just blame ten Hag for poor results

I haven’t heard anything regarding a Man United move for Youssef En-Nesyri as of now. Names I’ve mentioned in the past are Donyell Malen, Serhou Guirassy and Timo Werner because I’m aware that Man United spoke to their representatives.

I’m also sure the race is still open and nothing has been decided. I do see Man United signing a backup striker, but this doesn’t change their trust in Rasmus Hojlund for the present and future.

Despite their loss at West Ham, I’m still on the same page with regards to my thoughts on where Man United are at, at the moment.

They have too many injuries and it’s also difficult to work on a daily basis when there’s still no confirmation on the new co-owner, no clarity on the board structure beginning in 2024, no clarity on the new director… Man United have many problems – it’s not only Erik ten Hag and the results.

Barcelona can’t afford to make Echeverri’s dream come true

Claudio Echeverri is a brilliant young Argentinian who recently scored a hat-trick against Brazil’s U17s, and he’s always mentioned his passion for Barcelona in public.

Unfortunately, despite a relatively low release clause, Barça can’t make the deal happen now due to Financial Fair Play so it’s not possible to proceed.

That means that both Manchester City and Chelsea have much better chances to sign the player at this stage, and both Premier League clubs remain keen on making that happen.

No Chalobah offer but Roma could sign Bonucci or Kehrer

I’m not aware of any deal between Roma and Trevoh Chalobah now to be honest. Let’s see if the Serie A club will bid for him but as of today, I’m not aware of negotiations or contacts. I think Premier League clubs will enter the race for Chalobah, but probably later in the window as he’s just returning to the training pitch now after a long injury.

Leonardo Bonucci has been offered to Roma as an opportunity in January, and as he’d love to go to Euro 2024, playing for Roma would help a lot. However, Roma haven’t decided yet which player they want to sign in that position. Bonucci is available as an option but he’s not the only one, as West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer has also been offered to the Giallorossi.

Victor Osimhen has signed his Napoli contract extension

Speaking of contracts, Victor Osimhen’s Napoli deal is done. The documents have been signed and his contract has been extended from 2025 to 2026.

One more season at Napoli so not a long term deal, but it will help Napoli to handle his future. Victor Osimhen still has a very good chances to leave the club in 2024 – his release clause is in the region of €130m – but not in January unless something completely crazy happens.

The interest from Chelsea and Arsenal remains, and let’s see if other clubs will join the race to buy the player next summer.

Reece James accepted surgery on the basis he’d be fit for Euros

Reece James had surgery in Finland this week. Everything was fine and even Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was in touch with him. Chelsea believe it could take three to four months before the player is back on the pitch, so his season is not over.

James’ mission is to be fit for the final two to three months of the season and then to be fit for Euro 2024. After consulting the medical specialists wanted by Chelsea and people close to the player, he accepted the decision to go ahead with surgery.

No panic at Barça; João Felix situation under control

João Felix has been the subject of criticism around Barcelona in recent weeks due to the poor results the club had. He was one of the players always mentioned in the recent days, especially with Xavi not so happy.

Barça haven’t yet communicated to his agent or to Atlético Madrid that they don’t want to keep João Felix , because this is not the case. His situation remains open.

Barcelona are looking forward to having him as an important player in the second half of the season and the situation is calm and absolutely under control. He’s still being supported, but he’s not going to be moving in December or January, it will be in the crucial final months of the current season that a decision will be made.

No news on potential Barcelona suspension

Regarding the rumours that Barcelona could be suspended from the Champions League, I’ve zero information on this kind of thing guys, I’m sorry. This is a legal/lawyers topic, not transfers – and I have absolutely no idea…

Inter Miami getting the band back together

Congratulations to Inter Miami because they’ve now secured the signing of Luis Suárez. He will rejoin his old Barcelona team-mates Leo Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. El Pistolero has signed a one-year deal with an option for another year.

Currently sat in sixth place in the Serie A table despite Romelu Lukaku’s brilliant goals return this season, Roma remain a huge 16 points behind Inter at the top.

With the second worst goals against record in the top six, it’s clear as to why Jose Mourinho may be looking for a new defender to shore things up at the back.

Although there appeared to be rumours that the Special one was going to plunder his old side, Chelsea, this would see, to be wide of the mark.

“I’m not aware of any deal between Roma and Trevoh Chalobah now to be honest. Let’s see if the Serie A club will bid for him but as of today, I’m not aware of negotiations or contacts,” Fabrizio Romano said in his Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside.

“I think Premier League clubs will enter the race for Chalobah, but probably later in the window as he’s just returning to the training pitch now after a long injury.”

January always does represent a good time for opportunities to arise in the marketplace, and if clubs buy well, the transfers could often be a difference maker in the second half of a season.

To that end, news that the experienced Leonardo Bonucci has been offered to the Giallorossi may excite fans of the club.

“Leonardo Bonucci has been offered to Roma as an opportunity in January, and as he’d love to go to Euro 2024, playing for Roma would help a lot. However, Roma haven’t decided yet which player they want to sign in that position,” Romano confirmed.

However, the Stadio Olimpico faithful don’t want to get too excited about the ex-Juventus man at this point, as there could be a surprise addition in his stead.

“Bonucci is available as an option but he’s not the only one, as West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer has also been offered to the Giallorossi,” Romano noted.

Kehrer, signed by the Hammers for £10.1m from PSG (The Guardian, subscription required), could represent much better value for money in the longer term, given that he’s nine years younger than his contemporary.

Newcastle United have reportedly held surprise talks over the potential transfer of veteran Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci.

The 36-year-old’s future is in some doubt this summer, with Juve seemingly open to letting him go if the deal is right, with initial discussions said to have taken place with Newcastle, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

Newcastle have tended to prioritise younger players since their Saudi takeover, with the club’s owners funding moves for exciting talents such as Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak in previous transfer windows, and Sandro Tonali this summer.

Bonucci is a fine player who’s had a great career, but it’s hard to see how he’d fit in with that philosophy, so we’ll have to see if these transfer rumours amount to anything more serious.

Newcastle fans would surely give this legendary figure a warm welcome, but it’s probably also best if the club stick to the plan that has been put in place and which has worked well so far.

Eddie Howe guided the Magpies into the top four last season and there could be room for more experienced players, but Bonucci’s age surely makes him a bit of a risk as well.

Good morning everyone and welcome to today’s Daily Briefing from CaughtOffside – click here to subscribe for this and more exclusive ad-free content straight to your inbox!

AC Milan

AC Milan director Maldini on €35m deal for Charles De Ketelaere: “Charles is the example of a player who has to improve. It’d have been easier for us to sign Paulo Dybala as free agent last summer… but would he have been the right player for our project? No.”

Al Sadd

Matheus Uribe has completed his medical tests as a new Al Sadd player — the Colombian midfielder will leave Porto as free agent. Long term deal signed, Uribe will try a new chapter in Qatar.

Arsenal

Bayer Leverkusen hope to sign Granit Xhaka in June after agreeing personal terms on a contract valid until 2027. Talks will move to final stages soon. Arsenal will then insist on Declan Rice deal as their main priority to fill that gap in midfield. For the time being, they’re still waiting on West Ham to decide the final price tag.

Arsenal are interested in Joao Cancelo but could also consider Ivan Fresneda if Man City refuse to sell them another player (Telegraph)

Aston Villa

Mateu Alemany’s move to Aston Villa was 90% done, but he never signed anything. He had the chance to work with Unai Emery, with a big budget and on an exciting project, but he loves Barcelona and he changed his mind and decided to stay.

Barcelona

There’s still no concrete negotiation between Jordi Alba and Barcelona over salary reduction; this was not discussed in the meeting that took place on Tuesday while club plans remain to reduce salaries. Alba is under contract until 2024 and would be happy to stay at Barca.

Barcelona will fix the appointment of Deco as new director very soon, it’s just a matter of time for technical reasons, then it will be completed. Joan Laporta is convinced of Deco’s skills as director to help the club on long-term project.

In a surprise U-turn, Mateu Alemany is now set to stay at Barcelona — he’s changed his mind. Alemany had an agreement in principle with Aston Villa but never signed anything. Barca are now expected to continue with Alemany. Deco remains in advanced talks to become new director while Alemany would stay on same conditions.

Mateu Alemany won’t be moving to Aston Villa after all

Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen hope to sign Granit Xhaka in June after agreeing personal terms on a contract valid until 2027. Talks will move to final stages soon.

Xabi Alonso plays down rumours about Tottenham and Real Madrid: “Yes, I’m gonna stay at Bayer Leverkusen. I’m very happy at this club and with this team.”

Bayern Munich

Despite speculation over his future, Sadio Mane still wants to stay at Bayern next season. Mane and his agency ROOF have no plans to leave the club. Mane likes the project at Bayern, he has great relationship with Tuchel and hopes to stay and win titles next season. However, there is interest from Saudi Arabia – click here to find out more.

Bayern have a very clear stance on Joshua Kimmich – he is considered untouchable and not on the market this summer. There is no intention to negotiate with Barcelona or anyone else, he’s integral to the club’s project.

Bournemouth

Jefferson Lerma will be out of contract in June at Bournemouth — Crystal Palace are interested in the Colombian midfielder and will push in the next days. He is attracting plenty of interest as clubs are keen on free agent opportunity.

Brentford

Official: Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been suspended from all football and football-related activity with immediate effect for eight months. He has also been fined with £50,000 —and warned as to his future conduct for breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

Brighton

Roberto de Zerbi almost confirms Mahmoud Dahoud as next signing for Brighton: “Is he coming? Yes, we have no secrets — I like Dahoud and I would like to work with him. It’s not official… yet.”

Dahoud has already completed medical tests at Brighton.

De Zerbi on Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo: “I said there can be the possibility to lose big players. We are Brighton, and I know the policy of our club.”

Chelsea

Independiente director: “Today, I can say that Kendry Paez will be Chelsea player in 2025. We received bids from Man United and Borussia Dortmund but Chelsea showed super interest.”

No talks Chelsea-Inter or with player’s camp for Romelu Lukaku, as reported last week. This won’t happen before the end of season. Any discussion with Pochettino will take place after the Champions League final. Lukaku doesn’t want any distraction as his full focus is on Inter.

Julian Nagelsmann’s agent Volker Struth: “Can confirm that Chelsea were quick to call for Julian. He was their number 1 choice; I believe it would have happened if he wanted it. It was the right decision by Julian not to go there.”

Crystal Palace

Jefferson Lerma will be out of contract in June at Bournemouth — Crystal Palace are interested in the Colombian midfielder and will push in the next days. He is attracting plenty of interest as clubs are keen on free agent opportunity.

Inter Milan

There’ll be no Romelu Lukaku talks with Chelsea yet. The Belgian is only focused on the end of the season with Inter, who will take on Manchester City in the Champions League final.

Inter vice president Zanetti on Lautaro Martinez links with Man United and Chelsea: “Lautaro’s key player and we keep him with us. As things stand, it’s time to enjoy Lautaro as a player. He’s very happy here, it’s his home. I hope this can be the case for many years.”

Inter are closing in on the agreement to extend the contract of Alessandro Bastoni. The defender’s new deal will be valid until June 2028. alary will be around €5m net per year plus add-ons, with the documents to be officially signed in the next few weeks.

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has been linked with a move away from the club in January.

According to a report from Football Italia, the 35-year-old has fallen out with manager Max Allegri and he has asked the Turin club to sell him when the transfer window re-opens.

Bonucci has been an exceptional servant for Juventus over the years but he has not been at his best this season. As a result, he has not been a regular starter either.

It will be interesting to see if he can kick-start his career with a move in the coming months.

As per Italian journalist Giulio Mola from Il Giorno, the player could end up at Tottenham Hotspur in January.

Antonio Conte has worked with the player during their time together at Juventus and he knows all about the Italian defender. Bonucci was a key player under Conte and the duo could be keen on a reunion.

Spurs could definitely use more quality and depth at the back. Bonucci would be a superb short-term signing for them. He could mentor the young players at the club as well.

The Juventus star has won multiple trophies throughout his career including the Euro 2020 last year. Apart from his quality as a defender, his winning experience and leadership qualities could be vital to the Spurs dressing room.

Leonardo Bonucci has apologised on behalf of the Italian football team after they left the dressing room in a horrible state following their defeat to North Macedonia.

North Macedonia shocked the world by knocking Italy out of the World Cup, with a last-minute goal in a playoff game.

Video footage emerged on social media of the state of the dressing room following the defeat (via Twitter) and Bonucci was quick to apologise.

“It was a big mistake, next time, we’ll pay more attention. We were very disappointed and we didn’t think that these details make the difference sometimes. We’ll pay more attention in the next matches, we apologise,” Bonucci said in his post-match press conference, as reported by The Sun.

Understandably, the Azzuri were disappointed to be knocked out of the World Cup. This doesn’t excuse this kind of behaviour, however, and leaving the dressing room in a clean state is the least they could have done.

Their frustration with themselves has meant somebody, likely a cleaner on minimum wage, has had to spend their evening picking up cigarette ends, bottles, and food from the floor.

“There are teams selected in other confederations that have lost four or five games. And we were eliminated by a goal in the 92nd minute in our only defeat. This new formula is a real madness,” added Bonucci.

The Italian was angry at the powers that be for the play-off process, and seemingly used it as a slight excuse as to why they left the dressing room in such a state.
