Aston Villa have a ‘more realistic’ chance of signing Crysencio Summerville or Morgan Gibbs-White than Nico Williams this summer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Midlands club are a more attractive prospect in this summer’s transfer market than in previous years after finishing fourth in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League.

Villa emerged as a shock name linked to the signing of Athletic Club star Williams, who stood out as one of the players of the tournament as Spain went all the way at Euro 2024 — named Man of the Match for the 2-1 win over England in the final and named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament after notching two goals and an assist.

Unai Emery may well be on the lookout for a high-quality winger with France international Moussa Diaby heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Aston Villa to be priced out of Williams deal

However, according to Jacobs, Villa are yet to enter the race for Williams, with Barcelona and Chelsea more prominent suitors for the winger’s signature.

But even they face a battle to get a deal over the line, with high wage demands putting both clubs off.

“Aston Villa have not to date entered the race for Nico Williams,” Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT. Barcelona still remain the club to watch. Chelsea haven’t entirely walked away but won’t rekindle interest unless the overall package drops. They made the decision before Euro 2024 and nothing has changed since.

“Barcelona are hoping Williams either drops his wage or accepts personal terms in a structure that suits Barca given their precarious financial situation. This could involve deferred wages, for example.”

Rather than breaking the bank for Williams, Jacobs believes Villa may be better off pursuing the likes of Summerville of Leeds United or Nottingham Forest’s Gibbs-White — valued at £40m and £60m, respectively.

“Villa would be handed a healthy budget if Diaby is sold on their terms, but Williams’ wages are the real issue for potential suitors,” Jacobs added. “I think there is a more realistic chance Villa look at players like Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville or Morgan Gibbs-White at Nottingham Forest.”

Morgan Gibbs-White is likely to leave Nottingham Forest this summer and it is being reported that Newcastle are the best-placed club to sign the talented midfielder. 

The 24-year-old has been at the City Ground since 2022 having made the £42.5m move from Wolves.

The Englishman has been a big hit at Forest and has developed into the club’s best player. Gibbs-White featured in 37 Premier League matches this season, scoring five goals and assisting a further 10. This played a big part in Nottingham Forest staying up, but could it be the player’s last campaign at the City Ground?

Forest are one of six top-flight clubs that need to sell players before June 30 to appease the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, which could lead them to part ways with Gibbs-White.

Newcastle and Tottenham are two clubs interested in the 24-year-old, with journalist Dean Jones believing that the Magpies are more likely to sign the midfielder over their North London Premier League rivals.

The Nottingham Forest star would be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s squad and the Magpies boss would certainly take his game to another level.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones has provided an update on the future of Gibbs-White and has stated that Newcastle are leading the way to sign the 24-year-old talent.

“Doubt continues to linger around the potential of him staying at Nottingham Forest and my hunch is that if he leaves, Newcastle would be the best-placed to sign him,” the journalist said.

“Spurs are being linked too but I’ve heard a few whispers around the Newcastle side of this that would make me side with them slightly in terms of being favourites at this early stage.

“He would be such an intriguing signing in that Newcastle team, a lovely player to have, making inroads behind Isak.

“We know the priority for Newcastle is to find an attacker for the right side of the attack but I would still keep an eye on Gibbs-White and how his situation starts to open up.”

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has been linked with a move away from the Premier League club and Newcastle have been mentioned as a potential destination.

Former Premier League striker Louis Saha believes that the 24-year-old midfielder could soon move on to another club and a move to Newcastle might be ideal for him.

“He is a very impressive player,” Saha said.

“I think he has shown talent but as well very aggressive, capable of getting the ball very high on the field for his strikers, so he provides a good link with Chris Wood at the top. He is a very good leader. He is capable of creating chances for people and he is very clever.

“I think he is on his way to maybe other suitors. I am very very impressed.”

Gibbs-White has impressed with his performances in the Premier League season and he deserves to play for a bigger club with more ambition.
