Danny Ings is closing in on a summer transfer as new manager Julen Lopetegui prepares a squad that fits his style.

According to The Sunday People, Southampton are on the verge of re-signing Ings in a deal worth £6 million.

Southampton want to re-sign Danny Ings

The newly promoted side views Ings as a key addition to the squad, given his previous ties with the club and the experience he will bring.

Ings spent a season on loan with the Saints in August 2018 before joining them permanently.

During his three years at Southampton, he scored 46 goals and provided 10 assists in 100 appearances across all competitions.

Danny Ings to Southampton?

Struggles at West Ham

Ings’ time at West Ham has been notably less successful. Marred by injuries, he has only made 52 appearances in 18 months, scoring four goals and assisting twice.

This disappointing stint makes a move away beneficial for both the club and the player.

For West Ham, selling Ings will help bolster their transfer budget and free up substantial wages.

For Ings, a return to Southampton could be the spark needed to revive his old form and re-establish himself as a key player.

Re-signing Ings would bring a familiar face who understands the club’s ethos and can provide the necessary firepower upfront.

Southampton’s return to the Premier League demands experienced and reliable players.

Ings, with his proven track record at the club, fits this requirement perfectly. His ability to score crucial goals and his work rate make him a valuable asset for the Saints.

West Ham striker Danny Ings is closing in on a return to Premier League rivals Southampton, according to reports.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a fruitful spell at St. Mary’s Stadium between 2018 and 2021, scoring 46 goals in 100 appearances across all competitions, including 41 in 91 Premier League outings.

That form earned Ings a £25m move (per BBC Sport) to Aston Villa, while he later moved to West Ham for an initial £12m in January 2023.

However, since leaving Southampton, Ings has managed just 16 goals in 85 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa and West Ham combined.

It’s understood the latter are now willing to part ways with the three-time England international this summer in order to help finance a summer rebuild under new manager Julen Lopetegui.

Danny Ings closing in on Southampton return

Danny Ings of West Ham United looks on as he warms up prior to the Premier League match between Manchester City and West Ham United at Etihad Stadium on May 19, 2024 in Manchester, England.

According to Sunday People (via West Ham Zone), Southampton are closing in on a deal to re-sign Ings.

It’s understood a £6m fee has been agreed, with the two clubs now negotiating the structure of the deal.

The transfer is one that appears to make sense for all parties, boosting West Ham coffers while offering Saints vital Premier League experience up-front upon their return to the top flight after winning the Championship playoffs.

As for Ings, he can now return to the club where he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career to date, which included a 22-goal Premier League return in 2019/20 that ultimately earned him a recall to the England national team.

According to a recent report from talkSPORT, Southampton are keen on bringing West Ham United striker Danny Ings back to St Mary’s Stadium this summer.

Despite a challenging stint at West Ham United, where Ings managed to score only three Premier League goals over two seasons, the 31-year-old remains a cherished figure among Saints fans. His memorable 22-goal haul during the 2019/20 Premier League campaign for Southampton is a testament to his potential impact.

Danny Ings is no stranger to the rigours of Premier League football. With years of experience, including a successful spell at Southampton, his familiarity with St Mary’s and the club’s dynamics could make him an invaluable asset for Russell Martin’s team.

His previous tenure at Southampton demonstrated his ability to thrive in their system, and his return could reignite that prolific form.

With Che Adams’ contract set to expire, Southampton need a reliable forward to lead their attack. Ings, alongside the in-form Adam Armstrong, could provide the firepower necessary to propel the Saints away from the bottom three next season.

Armstrong has shown promise, scoring 23 goals in the Championship this season, but pairing him with a seasoned striker like Ings could elevate the team’s overall performance as it adds an experienced element to the attack.

Danny Ings could leave West Ham United to rejoin Southampton

Ings’ tactical awareness, combined with his experience and goal-scoring prowess, aligns well with Martin’s attacking philosophy. The return of a fan favourite could also boost morale and foster a stronger connection between the team and their supporters.

Ings’ tenure at West Ham United has been underwhelming, with just four goals and two assists in 52 appearances since his arrival from Aston Villa in January 2023. His departure from the Hammers could be mutually beneficial.

For West Ham, it would free up significant wages and potentially generate some transfer funds. Ings’ contract, which runs until the summer of 2025, might be more of a financial burden than an asset for the Hammers as they look to reshape their squad this summer under new boss Julen Lopetegui.

Julen Lopetegui has a daunting task ahead of him if he hopes to surpass the remarkable achievements of his predecessor, David Moyes, at West Ham United.

Moyes will forever be etched in West Ham United’s history for ending the club’s 43-year wait for a major trophy, a feat that earned him a place in the hearts of Hammers fans and a distinguished spot in the club’s annals.

Under Moyes, West Ham experienced a renaissance, with the Scot working wonders to transform a struggling side into a competitive force in the Premier League. His tenure saw the club not only secure a coveted European spot but also clinch the UEFA Europa Conference League, a landmark achievement that brought silverware back to the London Stadium and reignited the supporters’ passion.

However, as is often the case in football, there comes a time when a manager’s influence wanes. For all his successes, it became evident that Moyes had taken the Hammers as far as he could. The team’s performance plateaued this season, and a fresh perspective was deemed necessary to push the club to the next level. Enter Julen Lopetegui, the experienced Spaniard tasked with building on Moyes’ legacy.

Lopetegui steps into a role with significant expectations and limited resources. Unlike some of his counterparts in the Premier League, he won’t have a lavish budget to overhaul the squad. Instead, he will need to be shrewd in the transfer market, focusing on selling surplus players to generate funds for new signings.

One player likely to be shown the exit door is Danny Ings. According to the Evening Standard, the 31-year-old striker could be sold if a reasonable offer comes in.

West Ham United could sell Danny Ings to provide funds for Julen Lopetegui's rebuild

Julen Lopetegui could move Danny Ings on from West Ham United

Ings’ stint at West Ham has been far from successful since he arrived from Aston Villa in January 2023. With just four goals and two assists in 52 appearances, his impact has been minimal, and his departure would not only free up wages but also potentially provide some transfer funds for Lopetegui.

Ings was brought in with high expectations, but he has struggled to find his form at the London Stadium . His performance has been disappointing, and even he has admitted to finding it tough to settle at the club.

Under contract until the summer of 2025, his continued presence in the squad could be more of a hindrance than a help, especially given the club’s financial constraints.

Lopetegui’s challenge will be to build a squad capable of not just competing in the Premier League but also making significant strides in Europe. He will need to leverage his experience and tactical knowledge to bring out the best in the players at his disposal while integrating new signings that can add value to the team.

West Ham United are reportedly willing to listen to offers for striker Danny Ings.

According to Football Insider, the Hammers are willing let the former Aston Villa striker leave the club in the summer.

The London club is prepared to make big changes with a new manager joining the club high on the agenda of the club chiefs.

Ings has failed to make an impact since joining the club and the Hammers feel that his £125,000-a-week wages (via Capology) are not deserved.

They are willing to let the 31-year-old striker leave the club in a major overhaul of their squad.

In 49 appearances for David Moyes’ side, Ings has scored just 4 goals.

The striker has not been preferred in the starting line up by the Scotsman but whenever he has played, he has looked out of touch.

Perhaps that is why the Hammers want to sign a new striker at the end of the season.

According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, West Ham are targeting a move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

The Hammers have suffered because of Michail Antonio’s fitness issues and Ings’ poor form.

Solanke can solve goal scoring crisis at London Stadium

They want a striker who can lead their attack and shoulder the responsibility of scoring goals and share the burden with Jarrod Bowen.

The Bournemouth striker has been in sensational form this season and his 18 goals and three assists in 35 games have impressed clubs like Tottenham and Arsenal.

The 26-year-old striker is at the peak age of his career and the Hammers would be wise to make a move for the man in-form.

West Ham have struggled for goals

Antonio, who has seven goals in 29 games this season, is another concern for the club as the player has struggled with form.

In his absence, Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus have starred for the Premier League club.

West Ham are currently ninth in the Premier League table and look set to finish the season in the top half of the league.

West Ham United manager David Moyes has given his verdict on striker Danny Ings and the manager has not held back in his assessment.

Since joining the club from Aston Villa last year in a deal worth £15m, Ings has endured a difficult time at the club.

The Hammers needed to add goals to their squad since they were involved in a relegation battle last season. However, Ings has failed to provide the support in attack that Hammers were looking for.

Ings has struggled at West Ham

The English striker has either missed chances or failed to make the most of the opportunities provided to him.

The former Liverpool striker has scored only one goal for the Irons in 28 appearances this season. Although in his defense, he has only made six starts.

He scored his first goal of the season in the 2-2 draw gainst Burnley and his performance started discussion about his playing time.

It was suggested to Moyes to deploy both Michail Antonio and Ings in the team and the Scottish manager dsiagreed with the suggestion.

Moyes was honest in his assessment and declared that Ings does not give enough to the Hammers during games.

Danny Ings celebrating a goal for West Ham

“I think we’ve always planned for Danny to have a big role to play,”  Moyes said of Ings, according to the club’s website.

“Danny knows he’s come into a game which suited (him). We were the team on top, lots of penalty box entries and opportunities and who had the tidy finishes and who could finish well. Well everybody knows Danny Ings is great at that part of the game.

“There’s been other games where we’ve not had as much of the ball and not had as much around the box where I don’t quite see Danny giving us quite as much as we require there.

“But he done a great job coming on, it’s what we hoped that he’d score goals coming on or when he starts. But they’re probably his first goals for a while. I’m pleased for him and he was probably unlucky not to get more than the one that he got.”

Does Ings have a future at West Ham?

It is difficult to see Ings make a place for himself in the starting line up after that admission from Moyes.

Fans have been critical of the club signing Ings since the style of play that the team has adopted has not been supportive of the strikers’ strengths.

The Hammers play a counter-attacking style of football and that does not suit Ings and how he has played in his career.

He needs a number of chances to convert into goals but at West Ham, chance creation is a massive issue since the team surrenders most of the possession.

Maybe a managerial change can help Ings but if Moyes stays at the club, it looks like the striker has no future at the London Stadium.

Garth Crooks is back with his latest Premier League team of the week, and it’s a star-studded side containing big names from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs.

Declan Rice and Ben White were the stand-out performers for Arsenal as they beat Brentford 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium to go top of the Premier League table, while Liverpool and Manchester City played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk and John Stones were among the most impressive performers in their top of the table six pointer, while it was also a very good weekend for Tottenham as they thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 away from home, with as many as four of their players making Crooks’ line up on BBC Sport, as shown in full below…

Elsewhere, Chelsea also got a much-needed win at home to Newcastle United, and once again it was Cole Palmer who stood out for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, scoring in the 3-2 victory.

Other names to complete the XI include Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Danny Ings of West Ham.

It’s not been the best of season’ for David Moyes and West Ham United, despite the Hammers still being very much in the running for the Europa League this season.

The Hammers have completely dropped off the pace in 2024, their recent win against Brentford being their first in all competitions since the turn of the year.

A 6-0 humbling at home to Arsenal saw the incredible sight of thousands of Irons fans leaving the London Stadium at half-time, by which point they were already 4-0 down.

It was another nail in the coffin of a manager that’s never been the most popular in East London despite bringing them their first major trophy in 43 years – the Europa Conference League – last season.

One man that knows all about what it takes to be a success at West Ham is their former striker, Frank McAvennie.

Alongside Tony Cottee, he formed one of the most feared partnerships in the English top-flight back in the 1980s.

Frank McAvennie has suggested that West Ham manager David Moyes doesn't know what he's doing with regard to striker Danny Ings

The Scot is clearly unhappy with the way in which Moyes is treating one of his players, however.

“Go back to basics and see where that gets you,” he said to West Ham Zone.

“What they’ve not got is togetherness. I don’t see them all together as a team. I know Paqueta is a wonderful talent but surely one player doesn’t make that much of a difference.

Frank McAvennie has let rip at West Ham’s David Moyes

“I can’t understand what he’s [Moyes] doing. Ings gets Man of the Match and he gets dropped. I don’t get what the situation is with that.

“I don’t think the fans do either and that’s where the problem is. You see Danny Ings has worked his socks off up front, gets Man of the Match and gets dropped the next game.”

Moyes still hasn’t signed a contract that’s apparently been on the table for a while now, but whether that indicates he’s waiting until the end of the season to see how things pan out is unclear.

As the end of the January transfer window draws near, Celtic fans are eager to see at least one new signing, with West Ham United’s Danny Ings being the latest player rumoured to be on their radar.

Rumours are swirling that out-of-favour West Ham striker could make a six-month loan move to the Scottish Premiership, with The Mirror reporting that several clubs are interested in securing the England international’s services before the transfer window closes.

The 31-year-old has struggled to secure regular playing time under David Moyes this season and has yet to score for the club. However, he has a strong ally in Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers was the one who brought Ings to Liverpool during his time as manager, and despite Ings’ injury troubles during his spell at Anfield, Rodgers has admitted to monitoring the striker’s progress throughout his career.

After departing Liverpool, Ings revitalised his career with a successful spell at Aston Villa before moving to Southampton.

Despite the speculation surrounding Ings’ potential departure, West Ham manager David Moyes seems reluctant to let him leave, indicating earlier this month that it’s up to the player to earn more playing time in the English Premier League.

“Danny has played his part and he’s probably wanted more minutes than we’ve been able to offer him, but there are circumstances that have affected the situation.”

It was another disastrous cup result for West Ham United and their long-suffering fans.

Club history is littered with domestic cup upsets, and their abject performance at Ashton Gate against Bristol City on Tuesday evening got what it deserved.

Though the winner in the match was scored as early as the third minute, the lead never looked in danger for the hosts because the Hammers front line offered nothing in an attacking sense.

Shorn of the likes of Mohammed Kudus (AFCON), Jarrod Bowen (injured) and Lucas Paqueta (injured), the East Londoners looked a shadow of the team that has done so well in the Europa League this season.

If nothing else, the 3,000 or so supporters that made the trip from the capital would’ve expected every player to give 100 percent, though even they might’ve known what was coming when the team sheet was read out and Danny Ings had been chosen to partner Maxwell Cornet up front for the Irons.

In 28 games between them this season, the pair haven’t managed a single goal per WhoScored.

Their poor performances notwithstanding, it was what Ings did late in the game that really appeared to rile the away end.

According to Hammers News, when Ings was substituted in the 81st minute, his slow trudge across the turf highlighted a sulkiness in his attitude.

That, in turn, saw the West Ham fans let Ings know in no uncertain terms exactly what they thought about the player and his performance on the night.
