Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan was allegedly racially abused during a training game against Serie A side Como in Marbella.

Gary O’Neil’s side were playing Como, who are now managed by Cesc Fabregas at their pre-season training camp, but things descended into chaos in the second half with Hwang accusing a Como defender of racially abusing him.

In the aftermath Daniel Podence, who spent last season on loan at Olympiakos was sent off for punching an opponent in unsavoury scenes, with Wolves winning the game 1-0.

The South Korean insisted the game continued despite having the option to leave the pitch, and O’Neil confirmed after the match that Hwang had told the referee about the incident, whilst Wolves were going to file a complaint with Uefa.

“Channy heard a racist remark which is really disappointing,” O’Neil told the Express & Star.

“You could see a coming together and Channy was clearly upset by it, as were the lads, you could hear a lot of them trying to comfort Channy and stick up for him.

Hwang was allegedly racially abused against Como.

“It’s really disappointing that it happened, that we have to talk about it and that it impacted the game, not ideal and things like that shouldn’t be around.

“I spoke to Channy and asked if he wanted us to take the team off and he didn’t, he wanted the team to continue. I asked him if he wanted to come off and he didn’t, he was keen to continue.

“Fair play to him, to suffer something like that and still put the team first, shows what he is to us and how important he is to us. He’ll get our full support and we’ll pick him up in the morning and make sure he’s ok.”

On Podence’s red card O’Neil admitted the 28-year-old went to far with his actions.

“Daniel was then sent off for his part in sticking up for him, which obviously went too far,” he added.

“Daniel’s apologised for his part in it already. I understand that he’s sticking up for his mate and we need that, a group that’s together and when one of us gets hurt we give them our backing.

“But obviously we need to make sure that stays the right side of the line and we don’t cross that line.”

Hwang Hee-chan has pulled one back for Wolves to make it 3-1. 

Erling Haaland scored a first-half hat-trick to give Manchester City a 3-0 lead, and the game pretty much looked like it is done.

However, the South Korean has given Wolves some hope in the second half.

Bellegarde bursts down the right and whips an inviting cross into the box, with Ederson pushing it straight to Hwang, who finishes from close range.

Wolves are reportedly fearing that their top goalscorer Hwang Hee-chan could leave in the summer and are said to be bracing themselves for offers. 

The 27-year-old is currently away with South Korea at the Asian Cup but has been very impressive for Gary O’Neil’s team this season, scoring 11 goals and assisting a further three across 21 appearances for the Premier League side.

This has attracted the attention of Liverpool and Tottenham, who are monitoring the forward’s progress, reports Football Insider.

The report says that Wolves fear they may lose the South Korean star during the summer transfer window but they will likely attach a high fee to the player’s name.

Hwang signed a contract extension last month to keep him at Molineux until June 2028 – which will boost the player’s value if Liverpool, Tottenham or another top side firm up their interest in his signature.

It is hard to see where the Wolves star would fit in at Liverpool given all the talent they have in their forward area, therefore, Spurs could be a better fit for the 27-year-old.

Hwang’s international teammate, Son Heung-min, is also at the North London club and the Tottenham captain would be able to help the Wolves man settle in and become the best version of himself at his new club.

The latest Premier League team of the week is in, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City players featuring, while there’s also a lot of Nottingham Forest representation after their impressive recent wins over Manchester United and Newcastle.

Four Forest players made it in in total, with BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks selecting Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White, Matt Turner and Jeison Murillo in his line up.

Forest have certainly improved since hiring Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager, as we hadn’t previously seen too many of their players making the team of the week, but they’re now in there with more established names like Mohamed Salah, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer…

As we head into the second half of the Premier League season, it appears that Tottenham are preparing to rival Liverpool for a striker that has already plundered 11 goals in 2023/24.

The north Londoners have seen Richarlison hit a bit of scoring form of late, though the Brazilian does tend to blow hot and cold.

Ange Postecoglou has relied on the scoring prowess of captain, Son Heung-min, to keep the Lilywhites afloat in that department.

From Liverpool’s point of view, perhaps Jurgen Klopp wants to shake up the front line and have even more competition for places amongst the likes of Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Mo Salah.

According to Football Insider, scouts from both clubs have been blown away by the form of Wolverhampton Wanderers front man, Hwang Hee-chan.

The South Korean has led the line with aplomb this season and the goals have flowed since the beginning of the campaign.

Born in Chuncheon-si, the same birthplace as Son, it could therefore be said that Spurs have the advantage over the Reds should both clubs consider making an offer for the player.

It isn’t clear yet if any approach would be rebuffed or not, but given that Hwang has scored roughly a third of Wolves’ 30 goals this season and helped them into their current 11th place, he’s unlikely to come cheap even if the Midlanders decide to cash in.

Wolves are back level thanks to sublime goal from Hwang Hee-chan.

Callum Wilson had given Newcastle the lead with an acrobatic finish in the 22nd minute, but Wolves equalised 14 minutes later with a towering header from Lemina.

However, in the dying minutes of the first half, Newcastle restored their lead after Hwang Hee-chan conceded a harsh penalty, with Callum Wilson converting from the spot.

Nevertheless, the South Korean managed to redeem himself with a brilliant goal in the 71st minute.

Pope’s weak clearance fell to Tote Gomes who passed it to Hwang. The 27-year-old displayed brilliant skill as he embarrassed the Newcastle defender with his first touch to cut inside before firing past Pope to draw Wolves level.
