Wolves face race against time to secure transfer target at cut price

Wolves have until the end of July to trigger the release clause of Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi, according to reports.

Elvedi has been a mainstay of the Bundesliga side since joining from FC Zurich in 2015, making over 300 appearances across all competitions.

The 53-time Switzerland international — who remained an unused substitute throughout his nation’s Euro 2024 campaign — has long been lauded for his ability to play out from the back. Indeed, Elvedi completed 1,500 passes in the Bundesliga last season, at least 189 more than any other Gladbach player.

However, Elvedi is a player who has also often been linked with a move away from Borussia-Park. This summer, it’s understood Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers are keen on signing the 27-year-old, who they see as a replacement for Max Kilman, who recently joined West Ham United.

Kilman’s departure means, at present, Wolves have just four senior centre-backs registered to their squad in Toti, Santiago Bueno, Craig Dawson and Yerson Mosquera, the latter only returning to the club this summer following a loan spell at Villarreal.

Wolves must act fast to secure Elvedi deal

According to Sky Sports Germany (via Get Football News Germany), Wolves now have the opportunity to sign Elvedi for just €10m.

However, it’s understood that his release clause is only valid until the end of July. After that, it’s likely the Midlands outfit will have to come up with a substantially higher fee, with Elvedi a key player for Die Fohlen after starting 28 of their 34 Bundesliga matches in 2023/24.

Marcus Thuram sunk Dortmund in the Borussia Derby this evening, with a delightful header in the 78th minute.

The sides were locked at 2-2 going into the interval, with Erling Haaland and Nico Elvedi scoring a brace each. However, it was Gladbach who got the better of the second half.

A goal from Ramy Bensebaini in the 49th minute restored their lead for a third time and Thuram made sure of things with an inch perfect header late on.

Gladbach haven’t won the Borussia derby for a long time, but in condemning Dortmund to their seventh defeat of the season, they have changed that in dramatic style.

Erling Haaland is just relentless!

The young striker scored yet again as he combined with Jadon Sancho to equalise for Dortmund against Gladbach in the 22nd minute. What a beautiful finish.

Then the pair worked another beautiful goal six minutes later to make it 2-1.

That lead lasted just four minutes as Nico Elvedi score to level things up, bagging a brace of his own in the process.

The match is currently locked at 2-2 at the half way stage. It is shaping up to be a classic goal fest.

No less than a win will do for either side if they want to qualify for the Champions League. If the hosts are to have any chance of coming out on top they will need to somehow find a way of keeping Haaland quiet in the second 45.

Some Arsenal fans will absolutely love to see this superb goal-line block from rumoured target Nico Elvedi during Borussia Monchengladbach’s Bundesliga clash with Leverkusen this afternoon.

Wonderkid Kai Havertz saw an effort rattle off the crossbar, the ball spilled out to midfielder Kerem Demirbay who was just a few yards out.

Demirbay’s goal-bound effort was somehow blocked by Elvedi as he outstretched his leg to stop his side falling to a two-goal deficit.

According to the Sun via French outlet Le 10 Sport, Arsenal are eyeing a move for the centre-back in the next transfer window, Elvedi’s reportedly worth around £25m.

Le10Sport claim that Mikel Arteta is on the hunt for a long-term partner for William Saliba – who will officially join the Gunners for next season after being last summer from Saint Etienne.

Elvedi has made 33 appearances across all competitions this season, unfortunately his performance today ended on a sour note as a controversial penalty was awarded against him – allowing Leverkusen to score the all-important winner from the spot.

Elvedi, who has 17 caps for Switzerland to his name, could be a fine option for Arsenal as he’s also got plenty of experience at full-back.

Versatility should be a key factor when Arsenal recruit players as they’ve faced major struggles in their attempts to keep their best players fit over the last couple of years.

A block like this is probably the best thing a defender can ever do to prove his worth to interested clubs, should the Gunners prioritise a move for Elvedi?

Arsenal interested in signing £25m-rated Swiss centre-back

According to the Sun via French outlet Le 10 Sport, Arsenal are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi in the next transfer window.

The 23-year-old has been solid for the German outfit this season, playing a key role in their success as they’ve managed to defy the odds and find themselves third in the Bundesliga.

Elvedi looked sharp in Monchengladbach’s first game back this weekend after a brief hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Marco Rose’s side were 3-1 winners against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Le 10 Sport report that the promising centre-back is valued at around £25m, with Monchengladbach expected to be open on cashing in on the star as he has just one year left on his current deal.

It’s added that Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is on the hunt for a centre-back to partner William Saliba – one of last summer’s big money signings that’s spent the season on loan at boyhood club Saint Etienne.

With Elvedi a top defensive talent in the Bundesliga it’s not surprising to see the report add that Bayern Munich are also keen on the Switzerland international.

Elvedi has made 32 appearances across all competitions this season, the ace has also plenty of experience being utilised as a full-back, making him an attractive option for an Arsenal side that have struggled to keep their best players fit over the last couple of years.

The Monchengladbach starlet has 17 Switzerland caps to his name, he could be the ideal kind of player to play alongside 19-year-old Saliba as he has plenty of experience in one of Europe’s top leagues and he also has the potential to improve.

The north London outfit will be in need of reinforcements at centre-back in the near future as veteran defenders David Luiz and Sokratis are approaching the end of their successful careers.

Arsenal transfer news: Gunners in for Ligue 1 striker and Bundesliga defender

Arsenal are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window with Gunners boss Mikel Arteta looking at several options to sign players given the club’s financial status after COVID-19.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are looking into signing Ligue 1 outfit Amiens’ striker Serhou Guirassy who has emerged as a target for Premier League sides, with both Bournemouth and West Ham also looking into the possibility of signing the forward.

The forward has scored 9 goals for Amiens this season before the club were relegated following Ligue 1’s announcement to end the season.

Guirassy’s agent Mark McKay has tipped his client for a move saying : “A number of clubs in England and across Europe have shown an interest in Serhou after he performed so well for Amiens.

“In the current climate due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic clubs might not be able to pay huge transfer fees like they used to and in that respect Serhou could prove to be a bargain in this window.

“Serhou’s preference has always been to play in the English Premier League, but Amiens will evaluate all offers that come in for him and make a decision from there.”

Elsewhere according to Le 10 Sport, Arsenal are also vying to sign Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi.
