Former Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is among the candidates to take the vacant Burnley job, according to reports.

Burnley are looking for a new face to man the dugout after Vincent Kompany departed for German giants Bayern Munich, despite being unable to avoid relegation from the Premier League with the Clarets last season.

The likes of Scott Parker, Liam Rosenior and Ruud van Nistelrooy have been named among the favourites for the job, while former Everton and Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has also been linked with the role.

Assistant coach Craig Bellamy has been steering the ship on an interim basis since Kompany’s departure.

Bruce a surprise name for Burnley job?

According to journalist Alan Nixon (via Inside Futbol), Bruce is a surprise name that has been considered by the powers that be at Turf Moor.

Given the exciting football on offer at Burnley during the Kompany era, Bruce would likely prove an unpopular appointment given he is best known for his pragmatic style of play.

The former Manchester United centre-back would, however, bring a wealth of experience to the job, with Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Newcastle United just a handful of the clubs he’s managed.

The latter represented Bruce’s last top-flight appointment, with the 63-year-old spending eight months in charge of West Brom in 2022 after being let go by Newcastle. However, he’s been out of work since leaving the Baggies 22nd in the Championship with just eight wins from his 32 games in charge.

Leicester City are currently heading back to the Premier League without a manager and veteran coach Steve Bruce has told the Foxes to come get him.

The 2016 Premier League champions returned to the English top flight after winning the Championship this season and that attracted interest towards their coach Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea came knocking for the Italian at the end of the season and on Monday, the Blues confirmed the 44-year-old on a five-year deal.

This has left Leicester without a manager and former Newcastle boss, Steve Bruce, has put his name in the hat.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the 63-year-old said about the vacant position at the King Power Stadium:  “A points deduction wouldn’t put me off.

“Leicester, you know where I am! I mean, what a wonderful opportunity that is all of a sudden.

“You know, they might have a few problems, but Leicester has been a great club over the past few years, of course, the fairy tale of winning the Premier League a few years ago.”

Leicester City should avoid Steve Bruce as Enzo Maresca replacement

Bruce has had a great career in management but he is name that Premier League clubs are no longer considering, which is why Leicester need to stay away from the 63-year-old.

Football moves on fast and the former Newcastle boss has not managed in England’s top flight since leaving St James’ Park back in 2021.

Bruce’s last job was at West Brom, which also ended with failure as his team sat 22nd in the Championship when he left, which is the lowest the club have been for more than 20 years.

Ever since Newcastle United were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), they’ve come on leaps and bounds.

Though silverware has still eluded them, there is no comparison with how the club is now to when it was owned by Mike Ashley and had Steve Bruce in the dugout.

Ashley clearly had no regard for the club whatsoever, allowing it to be run into the ground, whilst Bruce’s limited tactical and technical nous meant that matters on the pitch were just as poorly received by the Geordie faithful.

It’s no wonder that when PIF took over and eventually appointed Howe, the fans came flooding back to St. James’ Park.

As the Magpies continued to shine, Bruce’s star dimmed significantly, particularly after another failed spell, this time at West Bromwich Albion.

He was only there for eight months, joining them when sixth in the Championship, but leaving them in 22nd place.

It’s perhaps with that and his time at Newcastle in mind that he hasn’t been anywhere near a managerial job in England since.

However, the Daily Mirror are now reporting that Bruce is in line for either the South Korea position – available because Jurgen Klinsmann has just been sacked – or a move to the Saudi Pro League.

“Steve is aware of the interest from South Korea and it’s a position that definitely appeals to him,” a source close to Bruce told Mirror Football.

“He is high on the list of a number of clubs in Saudi Arabia as well so he is assessing his options and will be having conversations over the coming weeks. Steve is keen to get back into management and sees managing overseas as a good next step in his career.”

Former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has suggested that Manchester United should raid his old club for the signing of Callum Wilson.

The England international has been a key player for the Magpies, and one imagines he could surely do a decent job at an even bigger club.

Man Utd are a little short of depth up front, so could surely do well to bring in someone experienced like Wilson to ensure there’s not too much pressure on youngster Rasmus Hojlund.

Bruce rates Wilson highly and has talked him up as a potential signing for the Red Devils.

“Wilson is a proven goal scorer, just look at his figures. The kid stacks up,” Bruce said.

“He’s unfortunately had a few injuries but when he’s fit he’s a very good player.

“I’m not surprised he’s linked with clubs including Man United at all because if you look at his record, especially since he’s been at Newcastle, he’s turned himself into a very, very good number nine.”

Steve Bruce has become the latest name to weigh in on Marcus Rashford’s latest poor showing.

The Manchester United forward is enduring a dreadful season. Appearing a shadow of his former self, the 26-year-old has recently lost his place on the left wing to youngster Alejandro Garnacho.

And after dropping another disaster class during Saturday night’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle, Rashford has come under fire by Bruce.

Speaking to Stadium Astro about United’s number 10, Bruce, said: “The first one you look at is why is Marcus Rashford looking, with how good he was and how well he played for England a few weeks ago, after ten minutes, is he not happy with playing on the right? Or what is wrong?

“We aren’t going to know about that and what’s happened behind the scenes if anything at all has happened.

“Obviously, when he comes off he shows that he’s petulant and he’s not happy. But he has to look at himself to start with. It’s not just him though.”

It’s clear that Mike Ashley was never flavour of the month when he was the owner of Newcastle United, and his eventual sale of the club to the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) opened up a whole new world of possibilities to the Magpies.

The first-team have flourished under Eddie Howe’s tutelage and thanks to the millions being poured into the business by the new owners.

In just two years, the club no longer resembles the mess it was in during Ashley’s time in charge.

Pictures have now been unearthed via NUFC TV which showed the extent to which the former chairman was trying to save money.

Ice baths have long been an accepted part of the recovery process, but where most elite level teams would have cryotherapy chambers and the like, back in 2015/16 Newcastle were having to use paddling pools, wheelie bins and dustbins.

No wonder the Toon Army were glad to see the back of Ashley!

This summer has seen the £100m ceiling for football transfers smashed to pieces after Brighton and Hove Albion sold Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for an astonishing £115m, though former Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce, admits he could’ve signed the player for a fraction of the price.

Whether Caicedo has justified such a price tag is a moot point at this stage, though it’s clear he is midfielder of the highest quality.

Had Bruce been able to bring him to St. James’ Park, it raises a question as to whether the Ecuadorian might well have been able to turn the club’s fortunes around.

“When I was at Newcastle we tried to sign Moises Caicedo for £4.5million and I remember thinking what a good player he was,” Bruce said on Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“The chief scout at Newcastle, Steve Nickson, came and told me that I had to see him play and that he was sensational.

“He ended up choosing Brighton instead of Newcastle and that will go down as one that we missed out on because now he’s gone on to become the British record transfer fee for £115million, but he is a top, top player.”

How times have changed at Newcastle United since the days of Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

When the Saudi Public Investment Fund took over the club from the former, the Magpies were in 19th position in the Premier League and prime candidates for relegation to the Championship.

Once Eddie Howe stepped in, it was like a weight had been lifted and Newcastle had morphed into the swashbuckling outfit that they used to be under Kevin Keegan.

Eighteen months on and things are going from strength to strength, and in an interview with club media, chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, explained that he wanted the club to be number one.

If there’s one thing that’s marked Newcastle United out in the last 18 months or so, it’s the improvements that have been made in all areas under Eddie Howe.

The manager’s positivity and evident love of teaching different tactical concepts within a training and match environment has got his players singing from his hymn sheet.

On another day and without the rotten luck that saw the Magpies having to play their third choice goalkeeper in the Carabao Cup final against Man United, Newcastle could’ve walked away with their first piece of silverware in decades.

Qualifying for the Champions League perhaps came ahead of schedule, but it’s a reward for the effort everyone has put in and the ambition of the manager to get the players believing in themselves.

Players that under former manager, Steve Bruce, looked a shadow of the players they are now.

One player in particular was even name checked at Howe’s interview for the job according to The Athletic (subscription required), and the manager-to-be clearly wasn’t happy with what he was seeing from afar.

Joelinton was actually playing as a striker at the time and was clearly struggling, and to Howe’s immense credit he identified a new role for the player once he’d been handed the manager’s role at St. James’ Park.

That the Brazilian is now one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League speaks volumes for Howe who is surely destined for further success in the north east.

So far, so good for Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side in 2022/23.

Though the Magpies lost the Carabao Cup final to Man United, it was an achievement for Howe’s emerging side to get there, and if they’re able to beat Leicester City in their next Premier League fixture, Newcastle will have qualified for Champions League football in 2023/24.

That would’ve been unthinkable with Steve Bruce in charge of the first-team and Mike Ashley as owner, so it shows just how far the club have come in a short space of time.

One piece of bad news clouded the win over Brighton and Hove Albion, however, as Joe Willock was photographed leaving St. James’ Park on crutches.
