Liam Rosenior has been sacked by Hull City after they missed out on the Championship play-offs.

They lost to Plymouth on the last day of the season and concluded the season in seventh place.

Hull trailed sixth-place Norwich, who suffered a defeat on the last day of the season, by three points.

Despite being nominated for Manager of the Year, Rosenior is sacked by the Championship club, according to Sky Sports.

Late in December 2023, Rosenior agreed to a new three-year deal that would have kept him with the team until 2026.

In 2022, he assumed charge at the MKM Stadium.

Now, reports suggest that the club fired him after he failed to make the top six.

Hull fell short against struggling Plymouth Argyle in their final match of the season.

In what turned out to be his last interview as manager, he stated that the season had been good when he spoke after the game.

He said, as reported by The Sun:

“The energy and intensity they put into the game, they deserved their win overall.

“Even though results didn’t go our way, we wanted to finish on a really positive note because that would have summed up the season.

Hull City Liam Rosenior Championship
Hull City have made the big decision to sack Liam Rosenior.

“It has been a positive season but we couldn’t quite get over the line today.

“Part of me not quite expected it, but I knew we would be a team that would have to learn on the job.

“Sometimes you can watch us play and we make so many young decisions but we are so fearless in the way we play.

“It is our biggest strength but sometimes our biggest weakness.”

Rosenior was nominated for Championship Manager of the Season, even though he was not able to challenge for promotion through the play-offs.

Hull City’s decision will be surprising for some fans

The winner was Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, who beat Leeds manager Daniel Farke.

After joining the team halfway through last season, he assisted the team in avoiding relegation, and at the time of his new contract, the team was in the play-offs.

Hull’s season came to an unsatisfactory close as they lost to Plymouth and only managed two victories in six games after being held to draws by Middlesbrough, Watford and Ipswich Town.

When you’ve had a footballing career like Wayne Rooney, becoming the all-time top scorer for Manchester United and England in the process, that commands respect.

The former international has been there, done it and got the t-shirt as far as playing the game is concerned.

As he winds down his playing career at Derby County, and with the release of Phillip Cocu as manager fresh in the mind, Rooney has intimated, per Sky Sports, that he would like the manager’s job full-time.

A player coach with the Rams since last December, Rooney will be taking charge of the first-team in the interim period with Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and Justin Walker, but his personal desire is clear.

“I’m ambitious, of course I want to go into management,” he said to Sky Sports.

“I wouldn’t be an ambitious person if I sat here and said I didn’t want the job.

“Right now, there’s an opportunity for the four of us here to try and lead this team, for however long that is. It’s an opportunity for us to show the different ideas we’ve got and get this team back on track.

“It’s been a strange week. We have to say a big thank you to Phillip, I’ve learned a lot in my first coaching role here.

“But, I think the change was needed. We’ve not had a great run of form and it’s an opportunity for myself, Liam, Justin and Shay to bring some new ideas and almost a new identity to the team.”

Any appointment won’t be made until a takeover of the club is completed, by which time Rooney may find he has competition in the role, both from outsiders and those he’s currently working with.

Clearly, it will be the first big decision of the new owner’s tenure and one that has to be right.

Currently rock bottom of the English Championship, Derby County are in desperate need of new direction.

After Phillip Cocu left the club, the Daily Mirror are reporting that, in the interim at least, first team managerial duties are being shared by Wayne Rooney, Liam Rosenior, Shay Given and first-team development coach Justin Walker.

With a game against Bristol City in the immediate future, it’s believed that Rosenior will direct operations from the touchline as Rooney is still in the squad to play, and remains captain.

In any event, Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan, a cousin of Man City owner, Sheikh Mansour, is expected to take over the Rams in the near future.

The January transfer window is just around the corner too, and the connection to the Premier League club could see them become a much-needed benefactor to the Midlanders.

Although the Daily Mirror note there will be restrictions in place as to how much Derby can spend, the hope is that City will loan them some of their players to help in the push away from the Championship relegation zone.

Longer term, such a ready-made association is entirely possible, and would arguably benefit all parties.
