Robbie Fowler believes Leeds United are suffering the consequences of last season’s failed promotion bid.

Losing the Championship play-off final against Southampton, Leeds United saw Leicester City, Ipswich Town and the Saints all return to the Premier League. The Yorkshire giants will have to try again this season.

And suffering several key exits, including losing Archie Gray, who joined Spurs in a deal worth £40 million last month, Daniel Farke has been forced to rethink his starting 11.

Leeds United have confirmed Archie Gray’s transfer to Spurs.

Luke Ayling, Cody Drameh, Rasmus Kristensen, Jamie Shackleton and Connor Roberts have already left but the club have confirmed the signing of Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United.

And Fowler reckons Gray’s departure, especially, has been the result of a poor end-of-season result.

“Sadly, for fans at Elland Road, that’s just the brutal reality of not being in the Premier League. If they’d gone back up I’m certain Gray may have stayed. The Gray family will probably have mixed emotions, too,” the ex-pro star told the Mirror.

“Especially Leeds legend Eddie. But until Leeds are an established Premier League club again, losing players like Archie is the price you pay [for not being in the Premier League].”

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has urged his former club to pursue Premier League stars Alexander Isak and Ollie Watkins.

Liverpool are set to kick off a new era at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp’s departure and the arrival of new boss Arne Slot from Dutch side Feyenoord.

There’s expected to be plenty of change at the club this summer with the future of a number of key players up in the air, and Slot likely to want to bring in his own players.

Fowler urges Liverpool to pursue Watkins and Isak

As you can imagine speculation has already begun over what players Slot could be bringing to Anfield, but previous reports have suggested one area he could look to strengthen is in attack.

Darwin Nunez has had a mixed second season at the club, with the Uruguay international starting the season well and then fading as it went on.

The future of Mohamed Salah has been a talking point with Saudi likely to reignite their interest this summer and the Egyptian only has one year remaining on his current deal.

Luis Diaz has shown flashes this season, but has lacked consistency, whilst Cody Gakpo hasn’t really hit expectations since joining the club.

Fowler has urged Liverpool to pursue Isak and Watkins this summer.

Fowler, a former striker himself believes the last few weeks of the season proved Liverpool lacked quality at the top end of the pitch, with the Reds linked to a move for West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.

“In the last six weeks or so, it has become evident that Liverpool need a player who can change things and make their attack more varied when it isn’t happening for them, I’m not saying that Kudus is that catalyst, however, Fowler said in quotes picked up by TEAMtalk.

Fowler would like to see his former club go after Isak and Watkins who have both had brilliant seasons for Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively.

“Would [Kudus] make the club better? He would make the squad better, there is no doubt about that and he is an exciting player”, Fowler added.

“There are two players I would genuinely like to see at the club, Ollie Watkins and Alexander Isak.

“I think Watkins has just signed a new deal, but I’ve got a lot of time for him and I think he is brilliant.

“Isak, for me, reminds me of Sadio Mane as well, I don’t want to put things in people’s heads, but I think he would be a good fit.

“There’s a bit of a Sadio Mane headache still at Liverpool and I can see a bit of Mane in Isak, in all honesty.”

How likely a move for either player is remains to be seen, but that sort of quality would certainly make a huge difference for Liverpool.

The on-loan Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is not having the best of loan spells for West Ham United. And he has faced even more scrutiny recently after he was videoed swearing at Hammers supporters.

Since making his loan switch to the capital back in January, Phillips has only started three times in the Premier League for David Moyes with eight substitute appearances, averaging just 35 minutes per appearance.

The 28-year-old has been in shocking form for West Ham having made an error which lead to a goal in his debut against Bournemouth. Since then he has given away a penalty and has received a red card too.

This poor situation has escalated when he cursed at Hammers fans after conceding a penalty in the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle United.

Former Premier League forward Robbie Fowler has given his opinion on the tricky time that Phillips is having.

Kalvin Phillips at West Ham.

Premier League legend Robbie Fowler on West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

He said in his column for the Sunday Mirror: “Kalvin Phillips should not have reacted to the stick he was given as he boarded the West Ham team coach after the 4-3 defeat at Newcastle last weekend. But come on, cut him some slack.

“Phillips has seen his dream move from Leeds to Manchester City turn to a nightmare. His loan at the London Stadium has gone the same way.

“The lad is only human, something is going to blow and of course, there was a fan with their phone fully primed to capture the moment in 4kHD. Should he apologise? Yes, he is a professional who behaved in an unprofessional manner, even if it was for just a split second. But, then, let Phillips get on with the task of rebuilding his career.”

Phillips is facing an uncertain future at the moment because his Manchester City career is seemingly coming to an end. And with the way his Hammers loan spell has gone he likely won’t have a future with the Londoners either.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has warned that it won’t be easy for the Reds to hire Xabi Alonso this summer as there’s bound to be plenty of other top clubs interested in the Bayer Leverkusen manager.

Alonso played for the Reds between 2004 and 2009, winning the Champions League with the club in his first season at Anfield, and forming a world class midfield partnership with Steven Gerrard.

Now working his magic in management, Alonso looks an ideal choice for Liverpool as they look to replace Jurgen Klopp, who recently announced that he’d be stepping down from his position at Anfield at the end of this season.

Speaking in the video clip below, former LFC striker Fowler is clearly keen on Alonso, but has also stated that his old club won’t find it easy to appoint the Spanish tactician as there’ll also be plenty more interest from elsewhere…

What’s the latest on the Xabi Alonso to Liverpool saga?

With Alonso’s Leverkusen side emerging as such serious title contenders in the Bundesliga this season, it might be some time before we know for sure what his plans are for next term, as he won’t want anything to distract him from delivering success to his current employers.

Fabrizio Romano has previously told us that Liverpool look the favourites for Alonso, but he’s also been clear that there are other names likely to be considered, so the club surely won’t panic if he ends up being poached by someone like Bayern Munich, or another of his former clubs Real Madrid.

It won’t be easy for Liverpool to replace Klopp, who is a legendary figure for the Merseyside club after turning their fortunes around when he took over in 2015.

The German tactician has won the Premier League and Champions League in his time at Liverpool, and even a top coach like Alonso would have big shoes to fill upon taking the job.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has heaped praise onto Jurgen Klopp for the job he’s done that leaves the club in a strong position for their next manager.

The Reds have some exciting young players coming through, and Fowler believes Klopp has been unselfish in prioritising the development of the likes of Curtis Jones and Conor Bradley in recent times, instead of being tempted to just have more ready-made and proven players in every position for his final season in charge at Anfield.

Klopp recently announced he’d be stepping down as Liverpool boss at the end of this season, and that will undoubtedly be a big blow for the club, as well as a huge challenge for whoever comes in next.

Still, Fowler believes Klopp has already helped his successor by leaving this squad in such a good shape with so many top players who can make an impact for the present and future.

“I don’t agree that the manager who takes over from Jurgen Klopp will be accepting a poisoned chalice. In fact, I think Liverpool’s next boss will have reasons to be cheerful about the legacy Klopp will leave behind,” Fowler wrote in his column for the Daily Mirror.

“Conor Bradley is the latest youngster to illustrate what a brilliant job Alex Inglethope and his staff at the club’s academy is doing to produce players who are good enough to wear the famous red shirt.”

He added: “Usually, when a manager exits a club they leave behind a team that is struggling. Rarely does the next incumbent inherit a squad that is geared for success. It illustrates the kind of manager Klopp is that he has not turned a blind eye to bringing through the next generation.

‌”It would have been easy for him, knowing this was his final season at Liverpool, to rely on the same select group of experienced players who he knows won’t let him down.”

Liverpool fans will no doubt be worried about what the post-Klopp era looks like, but the German tactician couldn’t have done much more to leave the club in a better state than it looks now.

Liverpool take on Arsenal away from home in the Premier League today in what could be a crucial match in terms of determining how Klopp’s final campaign with the club will play out.

A win for LFC gives them a commanding lead at the top of the table, whereas a draw or defeat would surely keep Arsenal right in the mix in the second half of the season.

Although it hasn’t been the greatest season for him in terms of scoring, Liverpool’s Mo Salah has still managed to find the net on 16 occasions per BBC Sport.

He trails Erling Haaland by the same amount, the Norwegian streaking away with the Premier League’s Golden Boot at this stage.

One of those strikes turned out to be the match winner for the Reds against Saturday afternoon’s opponents, Nottingham Forest.

It was a typical strike from the Egyptian King, getting his body in front of his defender and sliding the ball home  despite seemingly being off balance.

Even when Liverpool are playing badly, and in the opening 20 minutes of the second period they’d conceded two regrettable goals, it still appears that Salah can come up with the goods. His consistency in front of goal is astonishing.

So much so, that former Liverpool goalscoring legend, Robbie Fowler, had to mention it on his Twitter feed. That’s because the goal was Salah’s 183rd for the Reds, bringing him level with Fowler but in 71 less games.

Fowler’s x-rated message was a cheeky nod to just how brilliant the striker has been under Jurgen Klopp, and with four more goals, he will leapfrog Steven Gerrard into the top five of all-time highest Liverpool scorers.

If he stays at Anfield for the foreseeable future, whose to say that he can’t at least make it into the top three.

Man United were dumped out of the Europa League on Thursday night by Sevilla as the record champions hammered the Premier League club 3-0.

The defeat ended Erik ten Hag’s hopes of a treble with Man United looking to add the Europa League and FA Cup to their Carabao Cup win earlier this season.

In 2001, that treble was won by Liverpool as Gerard Houllier’s side played every game that season to claim all three cup trophies but that achievement was dubbed the “Mickey Mouse Treble” by fans of United.

Two years before, the Manchester club won the strongest treble possible, winning the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup; and United supporters used that to play down the success of their rivals in 2001.

Man United’s banner

Ironically, Man United were going for that same feat this season and having watched the Red Devils get knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday night, Liverpool legend and a member of the 2001 Liverpool squad, Robbie Fowler, decided to troll the Reds’ bitter rivals.

The former striker tweeted a picture of Liverpool’s three trophies from 2001 with the caption “Micky mouse treble”.

The Liverpool legend was the Merseyside club’s third-highest goalscorer in 2001, finishing behind Michael Owen and Emile Heskey, and knew how hard it was to achieve the feat.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has shared some worrying information he’s heard from the training ground at his old club.

The Reds are enduring a miserable campaign, just months after they were so close to a stunning quadruple victory, but it seems their efforts last season have now taken a real toll.

“They have struggled this season and all the talk coming out from the training ground is that the exploits of last season have taken its toll,” Fowler told the Liverpool Echo.

“I can’t sit here and argue against that. I think when you are a successful team you’ve got to keep fighting from any angle anyway.

“Jurgen Klopp is an exceptional manager but you will have tough times. There’s always something that will happen at Liverpool. I am not an insider giving out information but I would be amazed if there isn’t something happening behind the scenes [for the summer].

“I also think that when Jurgen signed a new contract that would be one of the pre-requisites as part of his contract that he can bring in players at the end of the season.

“Think of what they could have achieved! I know it’s all ifs and buts and should haves and could haves. They are having a tough time and the expectancy levels have risen through the roof but I’d be confident of Jurgen turning it around.”

Mohamed Salah once again fired Liverpool to a win at Anfield, with his goal today marking a particular important milestone.

The forward scored his 20th Premier League goal of the season today as he slotted a penalty home against Brighton to make it 2-0 to The Reds after Yves Bissouma handled in the area.

The goal now elevates Salah to joint second in Premier League goal contributions for Liverpool with Robbie Fowler on 158.

He now only needs to overtake Steven Gerrard, who has 212 goal contributions to the club in the Premier League era. Meaning there is a gap of 54 G/A between them.

Steven Gerrard currently manages Aston Villa

Considering Salah’s insane form since joining Liverpool in 2017. one could imagine the Egyptian easily eclipsing Gerrard’s record if he stays at Liverpool for a few more years.

However, recent reports have indicated Salah and Liverpool are a way off from agreeing a new deal, despite the 29-year-old’s overwhelming desire to stay at the club.

Whatever the case, Salah will have one year left on his deal when the summer comes, and a massive decision will need to be made between both parties.

Whether entails a compromise or a parting of ways remains to be seen.

Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has advised Jurgen Klopp to look to the club’s academy after hearing plenty of managers complaining about the transfer market.

Watch below as the ex-Red spoke to Empire of the Kop about Liverpool’s history of promoting from within, with the likes of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard all becoming star players for the club at a young age.

Klopp will be no stranger to Liverpool’s academy, which continues to produce fine players, with Trent Alexander-Arnold the most notable recent example, though Curtis Jones looks like another big talent who could perhaps be playing more often.

Liverpool surely have other young players coming through who could also help the club during this difficult time, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both badly missed after jetting off for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Reds fans would surely love to see the next Gerrard or Fowler coming through soon, with Collymore right to point to the club’s great history in this department.

We’re also seeing more of the big six sides enjoying success in this department too, with Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe at Arsenal, Mason Mount and Reece James at Chelsea, Mason Greenwood at Manchester United, and Phil Foden at Manchester City.
