Another pre-season of upheaval is in full swing at Leeds United.

After dropping down to the Championship last season, the all whites had to shed a vast number of players as they sought to balance the books for Financial Fair Play.

Any notion that it wouldn’t happen again 12 months later was dispelled once Leeds didn’t go back up to the Premier League automatically or via the Play-Offs.

Daniel Farke has it all to do this season, perhaps more so than in 2023/24, because he’s already lost a number of the players that helped keep Leeds towards the top end of the table for most of the campaign.

The mass exodus is, unfortunately, continuing, and Junior Firpo seems so desperate to leave that he has apparently taken a pay cut on his £60,000 per week wages (Capology) in order to seal a move back to his old club, Real Betis (Ficherio).

With the current transfer window still open for another six weeks or so there’s time for Leeds to redress the balance, but with one eye always on FFP, Farke and owners, 49ers Enterprises, are going to have their work cut out to put together a winning squad.

Leeds United are gearing up for a crucial summer transfer window after narrowly missing out on promotion by losing the Championship playoff final to Southampton 1-0 last season.

The club aims to bolster their squad while offloading several players. One of the key exits could be Junior Firpo, who is reportedly close to a return to Real Betis, with personal terms already agreed.

Leeds identify potential replacement for Junior Firpo

According to Estadio Deportivo, Leeds have identified Anselmo García MacNulty as a potential replacement for Firpo.

The 21-year-old centre-back, who plays for Ireland at the U21 level, currently represents Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle.

MacNulty joined Zwolle in July last year on a one-year contract with an option for a second year. During his time with the Dutch club, he made 31 appearances in the Eredivisie, scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists, primarily playing as a left-back.

The report claims that the club plans to proceed with Firpo’s sale only if they can secure MacNulty’s arrival at Elland Road. The club views MacNulty as a promising addition to their defensive lineup.

As Leeds United navigate its summer transfer strategy, the emphasis remains on acquiring talented players like MacNulty to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.

It looks as though it could be a long, hard season ahead for Daniel Farke and his Leeds United side.

Not getting promoted back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking has hit the Elland Road outfit hard, with a number of their players moving on to pastures new.

17th Leeds player set to leave the club

If a clear out last summer was a necessity as Farke looked to streamline his squad, this summer is already turning out to be a bit of a disaster for the club.

Given that the aim will be for the all whites to go up again this season, to do so without the likes of Archie Gray, Luis Sinisterra and others, as well as potentially Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville, hints at the size of the task ahead.

Indeed, transfermarkt note that Leeds have shed a massive 16 players already this summer, and now, Spanish outlet, Ficherio, have noted that Junior Firpo has agreed terms with one of his former clubs, Real Betis.

It’s therefore clear that the 27-year-old sees his future back in La Liga and not in the Championship.

Leeds United failed to win promotion to the Premier League last season after their season fell apart at the final stage.

The Whites finished behind Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Championship and then went on to lose the Play-off final against Southampton.

Now they are facing the consequences of failing to win promotion to the Premier League.

A number of players could leave Elland Road this summer in a permanent or loan move.

Archie Gray has left the club to join Tottenham in a big money move and more players could follow.

The likes of Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto could be next in line to leave the club this summer.

Glen Kamara is leaving to join Ligue 1 club Rennes and it is looking worrying for Leeds ahead of the new season.

Junior Firpo has the option to go on loan from the Championship club this summer due to the club’s inability to secure promotion to the Premier League, per Spanish publication ABC.

If Firpo were to go on loan, Leeds would be faced with a terrible situation given he has less than a year remaining on his contract and no new deal offers are in the works.

Real Betis, who have bought Roca and Llorente from the Whites this summer, are reportedly among the teams interested in signing Firpo.

Leeds United’s Junior Firpo reportedly went straight down the tunnel following the club’s defeat to Southampton on the final day of the Championship season.

Leeds had to win to have any chance of automatic promotion, and hope that Huddersfield could pull off a shock win against Ipswich.

Daniel Farke’s side slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Elland Road, and end the season with just one win in their last six games as they settle for a place in the play-offs.

Firpo heads straight down the tunnel?

As is tradition on the final home game of the season all the players go round and clap the fans and thank them for their support over the season.

However left back Firpo wasn’t there as he headed straight down the tunnel with journalist Adam Pope sharing the news.

Firpo reportedly went down the tunnel and didn’t join his team-mates in applauding the fans.

Pope took to X and said: “Firpo goes down the tunnel alone as the rest of the players applaud the remaining fans. 90 points not enough but a second bullet remains in the barrel. Knockout footy ahead.”

That kind of behaviour won’t endear the 27-year-old to the fans at all, and with his contract expiring in 2025, and reports stating he won’t be offered another one, he could be sold this summer.

The Dominican Republic international has featured regularly for Leeds this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions, with 26 coming in the Championship.

Firpo joined Leeds from Spanish giants Barcelona in 2021, and has made 81 appearances for the club in total, including 43 in the Premier League, before they got relegated last season.

Leeds will need to put the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion behind them quickly as they play Norwich in the play-off semi finals, with the winners facing either Southampton or West Brom at Wembley for a place in the Premier League.

Leeds United’s bid for promotion suffered a setback as they suffered a defeat to Coventry City over the weekend, while Leicester City capitalised on Leeds’ and Ipswich Town’s results.

Coventry took an early lead through Ellis Simms and doubled it with Haji Wright’s goal. Despite Joel Piroe pulling one back for Leeds. Afterwards, Junior Firpo seized the moment by delivering a golden opportunity to his teammates in the dying moments of the match.

The left-back showcased his skill with a magnificent free-kick from the left-hand side, expertly curling the ball into the dangerous area just outside the six-yard box. But they couldn’t find an equaliser, dropping crucial points.

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo was visibly frustrated at his teammates against Coventry

During the LUTV broadcast for the Coventry game, former Whites defender Tony Dorigo expressed bewilderment as the ball managed to elude every player on the pitch. He also observed that the Dominican Republic international appeared visibly displeased with his teammates’ inability to capitalise on the opportunity.

“Firpo threw his hands up, and has every right to as well because that was a brilliant ball in the perfect spot. It bounces for goodness sake, right on the edge of the six-yard line.

“Someone has to get there, either near post, middle of the goal or far post. But no-one did. Missed everyone.”

With Leeds and Ipswich faltering, Leicester City claimed the top spot in the table with 88 points after defeating Birmingham City at home. But Daniel Farke’s men have a chance to get back into the automatic promotion spots in midweek against a struggling Sunderland side in front of the Elland Road faithful.

Graeme Bailey suggests that Leeds United might consider an upgrade on former Barcelona player Junior Firpo at some stage, especially considering the significant wages he would command next season if promotion to the Premier League is secured.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, speaking to Leeds United News, Junior Firpo would become one of Leeds United’s top earners in the Premier League if they secure promotion at the end of this season.

Upon promotion, Leeds United will face numerous tasks to address, including the futures of players currently out on loan and those returning to their parent clubs. While recruiting new players is crucial, it’s equally vital to resolve the futures of existing players, such as left-back Firpo, who has been linked with a move away from Elland Road of late.

Firpo could serve as a valuable backup option, but given his high wage if Leeds are promoted from the Championship, offloading him could be beneficial for the Whites.

Journalist on Leeds United left-back Junior Firpo

Graeme Bailey revealed to Leeds United News: “If you are back in the Premier League with him, he is on very good money and will be one of Leeds’ highest earners in the Premier League, there is no doubt about that.

“He came from La Liga, and ideally you do want a young, upcoming full-back to come in to replace Firpo, but you are not desperate.

“If you started next season with Firpo in the Premier League, ideally you want an upgrade, but he’s not a complete disaster.”

Given his bit-part role this season in Leeds’ Championship promotion bid, it would be surprising if Firpo isn’t moved on by the club in the summer because of his extortionate wage.

The Dominican international has started 12 times in the league and has five assists to his name.

Carlton Palmer believes Leeds United are in no rush to extend Junior Firpo’s contract amid injury and fitness concerns.

Joining the Whites from Barcelona in 2021 for around £15 million, Firpo, 27, was expected to become one of the Premier League’s best right-backs.

However, after struggling with his discipline, the Dominican Republic international failed to keep the Whites in the top flight and has since been forced to play in the Championship.

And ahead of his contract expiring next summer, Palmer believes the club should consider parting ways.

“I can see why people are talking about not renewing his contract, he has struggled with injuries and that is a problem. You obviously don’t want to go into the new season with a player that is often out,” he said.

“He’s having a tremendous season this season, he’s doing really well, five assists in 17 games for a left-back is outstanding. But, I don’t think Daniel Farke will be in any rush to make a decision, and they need to win promotion first before looking at the situation.

“They may sit down with the player and think it’s better for him to move on in the summer, so they can go out and strengthen that left-back position if he doesn’t feel Firpo is capable of cutting it in the Premier League.

“But, there’s no panic at the moment. Leeds United do not want to go into the Premier League thinking the left-back could miss parts of the season, so that’s a factor that comes into it. I don’t think it’s an issue at this moment in time, as he still does have a year to run on his deal.”

Leeds United star Junior Firpo is likely to be sold by the Yorkshire club this summer as the defender will not be offered a new deal at Elland Road.

The left-back has been a key star for Daniel Farke since the turn of the year, starting all but one of Leeds’ Championship games, and registering five assists along the way.

The Whites have been in sensational form and have clawed their way back into the title race, currently sitting three points off leaders Leicester City.

A return to the Premier League looks good but with a contract expiring in 2025, Phil Hay has reported for The Athletic that a new deal at Elland Road is looking unlikely for Firpo.

Leeds will accept any offers that arrive for the former Barcelona man this summer and that will help fund their return to the English top flight.

This is a risky move from Leeds but it may also be a smart one as Firpo struggled in the Premier League last season and is also injury prone.

The defender also earns a large £60,000-a-week, therefore, having that off of their books could help the club recruit players this summer.

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo has had his fair share of criticism this season for his defensive lapses.

While there is no doubt that Firpo has been a useful player for Leeds and he has added a new dimension to their attack going forward, his inability to defend at a high level consistently has been a major problem.

The Leeds left-back has five assists since the turn of the year but he can be quite vulnerable defensively.

Journalist Phil Hay has now revealed that the former Barcelona defender is struggling with the defensive side of his game and he has not been able to shake off the issues so far.

Leeds are currently pushing for promotion to the Premier League and they will need a more reliable left back if they return to the top flight in the summer.

Junior Firpo in action for Leeds

It will be interesting to see if Leeds United can bring in a more well rounded full back at the end of the season. Firpo could still be a useful player for them, but the former Barcelona player should not be a regular starter for them in the top flight with his current defensive issues.

He has struggled against championship wingers defensively and those problems will only escalate when he is up against world class attackers in the Premier League.
