News that Ruben Amorim might succeed David Moyes at West Ham United has clearly come as a huge shock to football fans everywhere, not least to those in Liverpool.

It’s long been thought that the 39-year-old Portuguese would take over from Jurgen Klopp ahead of the 2023/24 season, but it’s been widely reported – by talkSPORT and many other outlets – that Amorim has conducted a face-to-face meeting with the Hammers already.

Their intent therefore is obvious and it remains to be seen if the East Londoners have done enough to seduce the current Sporting coach.

Should they manage to do so, it will really shake things up on the pitch given the contrasting styles between Amorim and current managerial incumbent, David Moyes.

Ruben Amorim could sell Tomas Soucek

On the odd occasion, the Scot will release the shackles and allow his team to play a free-flowing game. The ‘West Ham way’ if you prefer.

Most of the time, however, Moyes tends to adopt a safety first approach which doesn’t benefit the more attack minded players in the team such as Lucas Paqueta and Mo Kudus.

Whilst there’s clearly an appreciation for Moyes after he delivered European football on three consecutive occasions, including winning the Europa Conference League – West Ham’s first major trophy in 43 years – defeats such as the 6-0 at home to Arsenal and the 5-2 this past weekend against Crystal Palace has seen the fan base turn on him.

It’s clear that the London Stadium faithful want a change, and if the club truly want to move forward and rival the best clubs in the division, then they need a younger, more forward-thinking manager.

If it is Amorim that takes over, The Athletic’s Euro Expert, writing on X (formerly Twitter) believes that Tomas Soucek will be out the door.

The player has been a loyal servant for the East Londoners but his style of play isn’t likely to suit Amorim.

The latest Premier League team of the week from Garth Crooks is here, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City all getting players in as all three of the main title contenders won again.

Liverpool got three players in, but, somewhat surprisingly, there was only one from Arsenal despite them thrashing Sheffield United 6-0, while only Phil Foden made it in despite Manchester City’s impressive 3-1 derby victory over rivals Manchester United.

As ever, Crooks’ formation is an interesting one to try and dissect tactically, with the rather odd choice of central midfield players Tomas Soucek and Martin Odegaard both playing out wide, either as wing-backs, or possibly even as part of a front five…?

Overall, it’s a very strong-looking line up, with the likes of Ollie Watkins and Micky van de Ven certainly deserving their places in the latest BBC Sport XI.

Yoane Wissa also scored one of the more memorable goals of the weekend with his superb acrobatic effort in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Everton’s Sean Dyche praises “high quality moment” from West Ham ace

Everton manager Sean Dyche commended Tomas Soucek’s impressive late goal during Saturday’s 3-1 comeback victory at Goodison Park.

Dyche, once again lamenting Everton’s missed opportunities, acknowledged West Ham’s clinical performance that sealed the win, highlighting the contrast in effectiveness between the two sides.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Dyche irritatingly exclaimed: “We’ve got to go and score. I can’t stand here every week and say ‘the XG is through the roof’. It’s a marker but it doesn’t win you games. Winning games is scoring at one end and keeping it out at the other.

“They score a great goal to be fair to them (from Soucek) to get their nose ahead. We’ve had so many chances today. High quality moments in high quality areas and we don’t score a goal. That’s my responsibility but also the player’s responsibility.”

Even David Moyes, the counterpart to Dyche, conceded that the 3-1 result favoured West Ham, while singling out goalkeeper Alphonse Areola for his exceptional performance. Moyes highlighted Areola’s brilliance, particularly his pivotal save from a Beto penalty, as the highlight of an outstanding display.

Everton boss praises West Ham’s Tomas Soucek

On the other hand, Dyche offered reluctant praise for Areola’s teammate, Tomas Soucek, whose beautifully curled goal in the 91st minute gave West Ham the lead for the first time.

Soucek, typically known for his aerial prowess and gritty goals, netted what could be considered the pinnacle of his West Ham tenure in stoppage time. His midfield companion, Edson Alvarez, sealed the victory with a counter-attacking goal, alleviating pressure on former Everton manager Moyes after back-to-back wins and a haul of seven goals in a week.

Moyes, in contrast, lauded Soucek’s exceptional curling strike as “brilliant.” The towering Czech midfielder, who now boasts nine goals this season, is just one goal shy of his personal best.

Despite being a hugely important player in the heart of David Moyes’ midfield, Soucek, while discussing Paqueta’s talent, remained as humble as ever, claiming it is ‘difficult to play next to’ the South American.

“We know his quality,” Soucek told The Evening Standard.

“He’s a different (level) of player to all of us. It’s sometimes difficult to play next to him (because he is so much better)!

“He’s a top player, his quality is unbelievable. He can keep the ball, he connect perfectly with Emerson with his passes and he can add something extra.

“I’m happy for him. He came back and straight away we won so hopefully he can stay fit for the next games.”

Paqueta remains linked with a move to Manchester City following last summer’s failed transfer due to a betting investigation.

During his first 18 months in London, Brazil’s Paqueta, who has up to four-and-a-half years left on his deal, has scored 10 goals and registered 13 assists in 69 games in all competitions.

West Ham fan favourite admits he is assessing options to leave

West Ham United midfielder Tomás Soucek has admitted he sitting with the idea of leaving the London club in the future to play in another country.

The Czech star has been with West Ham since 2020 and has grown to become a fan favourite amongst the London Stadium faithful.

The midfielder has played a big part in the Hammers’ recent growth but the 28-year-old has been speaking on the V Repre podcast about his future, relayed by Infotbal in the Czech Republic.

Soucek was linked with a move to Inter Milan last summer and the West Ham star has admitted that it is a club that he would like to join. The midfielder has said that he is assessing his future but he is also happy to stay in East London for a long time.

“Already last summer I received an offer directly from Saudi Arabia. But I immediately gave her away, it’s not my cup of coffee,” Soucek said.

“A lot of people told me that he was knocking on the head, why. But it’s not for me. Neither America nor China. I would rather return to the Czech league, where I would live with my family and friends. And if it was Slavia that raised me, that would be a plus.

“It’s true that sometimes I think about it – to try the Italian, German or Spanish leagues, for example. It would be more interesting than being in England all my life.

“But I’m also tempted to be in one team for several years, it’s the Premier League and a big team.”

Danny Murphy claims Moyes will axe 28-year-old to make way for Kalvin Phillips

According to Danny Murphy, if Kalvin Phillips secures his January loan move from Manchester City to West Ham, he could replace Tomas Soucek in the starting line-up.

Murphy, speaking on talkSPORT, emphasised that Phillips, an England international, requires consistent playing time and suggested that joining West Ham could be a beneficial move for the 28-year-old as he aims to solidify his spot in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming European Championships.

Murphy further noted that despite the impressive performance of summer signing Edson Alvarez, the potential acquisition of Kalvin Phillips by West Ham suggests that the club wouldn’t pursue the move if they didn’t intend to provide Phillips with playing time.

Consequently, Murphy speculates that Czech international Tomas Soucek might be the likely candidate to find himself on the bench at the London Stadium if Phillips joins the squad.

“He’s a talented lad, who needs a platform to play, he’s got an England squad to try and get into and I think this could be a good move for him,” said Murphy on TalkSPORT.

“But when you look at the midfield West Ham have got, I know they’re still in two competitions and there’s going to be quite a few games, but Alvarez has been sensational since he’s come in.”

He added: “My feeling is, Moyes and the club wouldn’t go out on a limb, put the money in if they weren’t going to play him. I think he’ll take Soucek’s place.”

If Soucek ends up being replaced by Kalvin Phillips, it would be unfortunate for him given his excellent performances in recent months. Although he had a somewhat shaky start to the campaign without Declan Rice alongside him, Soucek managed to establish a solid partnership with Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse as the season progressed.

West Ham midfielder signs new contract until 2027

Tomas Soucek has signed a deal at West Ham which will keep him at the club until the year 2027.

The Czech Republic international joined the club on an initial loan in the January window of 2020 before the deal was made permanent the following summer.

Soucek has made 182 appearances for the club since and has been a mainstay in the heart of the Hammer’s midfield since.

Now at the age of 28, the midfielder expressed his happiness at signing a new four-year deal at the London Stadium.

“We have won a trophy, had good results in the Premier League, and I am happy with myself, that I have played nearly every minute, and I feel that the fans appreciate me here.” He said via the BBC.

David Moyes will be hoping that Soucek can help drive his side onto a successful Europa League and Premier League campaign.
