David Moyes has outlined his role as a ‘technical observer’ for Uefa at this summer’s European Championships.

The Scottish tactician left his role as West Ham United manager at the end of last season, helping the club end its 43-year wait for a major trophy by winning the 2023 Europa Conference League.

But Moyes hasn’t been short of things to keep him busy, taking up a role for Uefa overseeing tactical trends at Euro 2024 in order to help improve football at the grassroots level.

“I am part of a group of 12 Uefa observers, external who are going to games in Germany and talking about what we’ve seen,” Moyes explained in his column for BBC Sport.

“We look at a lot of analytical data and also explore any general tactical trends – so, if there is anything new going on, or anything which isn’t happening any more that has done in the past.

“The idea is to try to see where the future of football is heading, and what should be fed back to younger coaches at all levels of the game down to the grassroots.

“Those are the places where people need to see what changes are coming, so they can try to implement it into their ideas as well.”

David Moyes joins forces with former Man Utd and Liverpool managers

Uefa’s group of observers reads like a who’s who of former managers, with Moyes joined by the likes of ex-Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, former Chelsea manager Avram Grant, and Fabio Capello — who was in charge of England between 2007 and 2012.

Completing the line-up are Ioan Lupescu (current Dinamo Bucharest head of youth development), Michael O’Neill (current Northern Ireland manager), Aljoša Asanović (former Derby County midfielder and recent Zambia national team boss), Packie Bonner (former Celtic and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper), Frank de Boer (former Inter, Ajax, Crystal Palace and Netherlands manager), Aitor Karanka (former Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham boss) and Jean-Francois Domergue (Euro 84 winner with France).

Moyes added: “I have been to a few games with Rafa and ex-Romania midfielder Ioan Lupescu, and have travelled around with former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Packie Bonner too, feeding back what we’ve seen to try to build a picture of what Euro 2024 has been about.

“On the tactical side, there is nothing really new that has stuck out as being different or surprising, but some of the smaller details have been interesting.”

David Moyes and Declan Rice enjoyed a successful time together at West Ham United.

The Scottish manager guided the England international to success in Europe as they won the Europa Conference League together.

Rice moved on to join Arsenal in a club record move while Moyes was shown the exit door at the London Stadium at the end of the 2023-24 season.

The midfielder is currently on international duty with England and he is hoping to help Gareth Southgate’s team to success in the European Championship.

In a recent conversation with the podcast The Rest Is Football, Moyes acknowledged that Rice’s desire was, up until he departed, somewhat impeding West Ham.

Rice wanted to establish himself, according to Moyes, since he was conscious of criticism that he didn’t score enough goals in his second season.

And Moyes hinted that he believed Rice would have been better suited playing as a six at Arsenal while discussing the impact that had on Tomas Soucek’s game.

Moyes said:

“Declan was such a great lad to have and could cover the ground in his recovery speed, his ability. But I have to say, and I’ve said it, he has improved in a lot of ways.

“He wanted to get forward more in the second year. The first year together when we had Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice, Tomas was the one making the box and scoring the goals.

“Declan was sitting. I think Declan felt, and there was a lot getting said, Declan Rice is not going to be that good if he can’t score a goal, if he can’t really get forward.

“And I think Declan got a wee bit hurt by that as well. And actually, it didn’t help the balance as well with the team, because Tomas ended up having to sit a little bit more and he wasn’t as good at what Declan could do.

“And Declan at the time wasn’t scoring quite enough, he was getting a few, but I think he wanted to prove to everybody how good he could be at the other side as well.

“I think he’s better as a six.”

Declan Rice has transitioned well from West Ham to Arsenal

At Arsenal, Rice has been hugely success in the number eight role and his output in the final third has increased significantly.

The England international scored seven goals last season, some really crucial ones against Manchester United and Luton Town, while also providing eleven assists.

He was one of their best players last season and helped them fight Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Former West Ham United manager David Moyes has been tipped to find himself back at work in the Premier League again pretty soon by pundit Tony Cascarino.

Moyes left his position at the London Stadium at the end of the season recently, with Julen Lopetegui now in place to replace the long-serving Scottish tactician as Hammers boss.

Still, Cascarino has discussed Moyes’ situation and tipped him to return to a job in the top flight soon enough.

“I think there will be another opportunity (in the Premier League) because what he has proved is that he can put the foundations of a football club together to make them a very solid football club,” the pundit said on talkSPORT.

It remains to be seen if Moyes will be high up on most clubs’ lists these days, but he’s surely well respected within the game after doing a fine job with West Ham overall.

We’ve already seen some new managers coming in at a few clubs, with Brighton replacing Roberto de Zerbi with the young and inexperienced Fabian Hurzeler.

Elsewhere, there has been speculation about Thomas Frank potentially leaving Brentford, so that could be an opening to watch out for, though he hasn’t yet left the club.

David Moyes has praised the recent performances of Declan Rice and stated that he is currently worth £150 million after signing from West Ham.

The England midfielder completed his high-profile move across London last summer, joining Arsenal from West Ham for a club record £105 million.

Just like with many record-breaking transfers, the deal was criticised due to the incredible fee of the player with many expecting Rice to fail to live up to the huge expectations.

But the 25-year-old has not only reached the incredible heights expected of him but has completely surpassed them as he led the Gunners to their best-ever season in the Premier League, although it wasn’t enough to dethrone Manchester City.

Speaking on the England star, his former West Ham manager Moyes claimed that Arsenal got a £105 million bargain.

‘I was telling West Ham to hold out for £150m and people were saying I was off my head.” He told talkSPORT.

“But I think if you look at some of the players who have come around that price, Dec’s surpassed them and looks above them.”

England fans will be hoping that he continues his incredible form into their European campaign as they prepare to face off against Serbia in their opening game of the tournament on Sunday night.

Rice will anchor Gareth Southgate’s midfield and will more than likely feature next to Jude Bellingham in the middle of the park.

West Ham United could be set to lose centre-back Nayef Aguerd this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Aguerd has been a standout performer for the Hammers since joining from Rennes for a reported £30m in 2022, making 58 appearances across all competitions during that time.

In 2023/24, Aguerd ranked first among West Ham players in the Premier League for passes completed per 90 minutes (45.36) while also featuring in the top three for aerial duels won (2.32) and headed clearances (1.89).

However, the Morocco international wasn’t able to guide West Ham back into Europe, with the Londoners suffering a dismal end to the season which ultimately saw them slip to ninth in the table.

Even more worryingly, West Ham conceded a whopping 74 goals in 38 games, with only the bottom three conceding more, despite now-former boss David Moyes being known for his defensive solidity.

2023/24 was undoubtedly a huge disappointment, especially just one year on from West Ham ending their 43-year wait for a major trophy with the Uefa Europa Conference League.

Aguerd to leave West Ham?

According to Sky Sports’ Sheth, Aguerd is one to ‘keep an eye on’ this summer regarding a potential exit, as new West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui seeks to shuffle his pack and guide the club back into Europe.

“I think it is clear that that’s an area they do want to strengthen, that there’s lots of talk about Nayef Aguerd potentially leaving West Ham United – that’s definitely one to keep an eye on,” Sheth told GIVEMESPORT.

“But the fact that they are going in for a centre-back in Fabricio Bruno would suggest that that is definitely an area they are prioritising during this summer’s transfer window.”

Regardless, it’s sure to be a busy summer for the Hammers as Lopetegui works to make his mark on the team and improve them following a disappointing final campaign under Moyes.

The Julen Lopetegui era has already begun at West Ham United, and though we won’t see just how well the Spaniard will fare in the hot-seat for a couple of months yet, he’s already in the office and getting to work.

It isn’t clear at this point how many new signings he will have at his disposal, though the fact that the Hammers seem to be trying to get their business done early this summer bodes well.

One player that Lopetegui won’t have had the chance to have a look at is Said Benrahma, given that the player was loaned to Lyon last season and apparently isn’t fussed about a return to East London.

He’d be just the sort of player and character that could ignite the new coach’s way of playing, however, that would appear to be nothing more than a pipe dream at this point.

In any event, the Hammers were hopeful of procuring an eight-figure fee from the French side, but as Sean Whetstone of West Ham News noted on X (formerly Twitter), there is no obligation to buy, only an option, and given that Lyon are banned from making transfers at this moment, there’s little anyone can do.

In the end, the 2023/24 campaign was a bit of a damp squib for West Ham United, and coming so soon after the highs of the previous season, it was a real disappointment.

The East Londoners have often promised so much but almost always failed to hit the heights.

David Moyes bucked that trend during his tenure, culminating in the epic Europa Conference League title win in 2022/23.

The writing was on the wall for the Scot once his side were hammered 6-0 at home by Arsenal, and the Irons never really recovered after that home loss.

West Ham will be sold within three years

Julen Lopetegui was brought into the club, and in a move that’s significantly different from previous incumbents in his position, he will only be head coach rather than manager.

From now on, technical director, Tim Steidten, will take charge of transfers in a much more continental way of working, something that former super agent, Jon Smith, believes could be the pre-cursor to a sale of the club.

“West Ham, as was over the last couple of years, have got away with their way of working because they didn’t have an obvious striker but they did have a decent coach,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“Now it looks as if things will work slightly differently at the club with Tim Steidten driving transfers, and I think it’s a path that they have to tread to become a modern club.

“I’ve grown up with a lot of the people running our game and have had good relationships with most of them, and I’m fond of David Sullivan who has been very kind to me.

West Ham owner David Sullivan

“I’ve watched him operate and he’s bloody good at what he does – but he’s in his 70s. He’s not ill at all, but he’s had medical issues and I just feel that he’s possibly setting the club up for the future.

“When you look around the corner, the David Gold shareholding that’s for sale… the price has gone up and up and up, and the obvious taker was originally Daniel Kretinsky but he’s gone and bought the Post Office now, so he’s obviously not going to buy West Ham at the same time.

“He’s still a major shareholder, however, so put all those computations together, and you get a club that needs to set itself up for a potential sale in the coming 36 months.

“So for me, the new way of working is an obvious step for West Ham to take. It’s modern, it’s cool, it’s doing the things that the likes of Man United are going to have to do in future and I think it’s a bold move, but a necessary one.

“I think there’s a real chance that West Ham will be sold in the next 36 months but it does depend, by the way, on who comes in and takes the Gold shareholding.

“There’s some big players in that mix, and I think when you see the outcome of that, whoever comes in may be the prelude to what happens next.”

Given the template at the club in terms of the reach it has amongst supporters, there’s no reason why, with the right investment, the club can’t, finally, start to regularly populate the upper echelons of the Premier League and be in the Champions League each season.

Though they have one of the most iconic grounds in the country, it’s clear that the London Stadium wasn’t built to hold football matches, so any prospective buyer might also be looking to relocate the club once more.

David Sullivan is likely to make a pretty penny from any sale, before driving off into the sunset too.

West Ham endured a poor second half to their 2023/24 campaign, which eventually saw David Moyes part company with the club.

Buy Last Minute Tickets to the UEFA Champions League Final!

After taking them to the Europa Conference League title 12 months ago, it was felt that, perhaps, the Scot might be offered a new deal given that his contract at that point had a year left to run.

However, a series of poor results in the Premier League meant that conversations never really appeared to progress towards getting him to put pen to paper, and in the end, the Hammers decided to plump for Julen Lopetegui as the new first-team head coach.

His remit will be slightly different to Moyes in that it will be technical director, Tim Steidten, dealing with transfers. Lopetegui’s best work needs to be done on the training pitch.

Stan Collymore isn’t convinced by West Ham’s Julen Lopetegui

After initial reticence, it seems that the Hammers faithful are coming around to the idea of the Spaniard being at the helm, but as Stan Collymore noted, it’s an appointment that might not be a long-term one.

“Julen Lopetegui is a confident man and he’s had some of the biggest jobs that it’s possible to get, and I think that West Ham are obviously looking for somebody that can take them consistently into Europe over the next three or four years,” he said to CaughtOffside for his exclusive column.

“If you’re David Sullivan, you’re probably looking at clubs like Aston Villa and Newcastle and saying that’s where we should be. That’s where we want to be. We want to be in the Champions League. So we need a manager that can pretty much get us there.

Julen Lopetegui might not be the right man for West Ham according to Stan Collymore
Julen Lopetegui might not be the right man for West Ham according to Stan Collymore

“So Lopetegui’s experience at Real Madrid, at Sevilla, with the Spanish National team, at Porto and with Spanish under age groups… he ticks all the boxes. I’m just not convinced about him as a person.

“If you look at Wolves he was there for a year, if you look at Sevilla – three years, Real Madrid – he barely walked into the club before he was out again, Spain – a couple of years, Porto – a couple of years… if West Ham are looking to get into the Champions League, it’s a three, four or five year project, and he hasn’t stayed at a club for anywhere near that.

“So the question is, what’s in it for him? Massive payday.

“Is he particularly loyal? Wolves fans will say no. If he has a good season and let’s say do what Villa did last season, does anybody honestly think that if Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich came in for him that he’d still be at West Ham?”

Though Lopetegui came across as being sincere during his opening interview with club media, his suggestion that he’d be back at the London Stadium as manager one day, after managing Sevilla in a Europa League fixture there, smacked of party line.

He certainly needs to hit the ground running in terms of results, and by getting back to playing the West Ham way.

If he’s able to do that and get everyone onside, success should follow. To that end, if he’s the one driving that success, he’d be a foolish manager indeed to then jump ship.

Time will tell if Collymore’s hunch is proved correct.

With Man City having won another Premier League title, setting a record for doing so in the process, one might think that all is rosy in the garden at the Etihad Stadium.

Buy Last Minute Tickets to the UEFA Champions League Final!

For one of Pep Guardiola’s players, however, nothing could be further from the truth.

It takes a special kind of talent to fit into the Catalan’s demanding way of playing, and only the very, very best are going to become regulars under him.

Any sign of a drop off in form or an intention to seek riches elsewhere isn’t generally met with a ‘no can do’ attitude.

Kalvin Phillips is set to leave Man City
Man City’s Kalvin Phillips could join Roma

Rather, Guardiola is more than happy for players to go, preferring instead to replace them with others already at the club or with a big name from elsewhere.

As arguably the best team in the world over recent seasons, the cachet that playing for Man City has at present tends to have the effect that whomever Guardiola wants, Guardiola gets.

One player signed by him, however, was almost instantly written off as a mistake.

Man City flop Kalvin Phillips could be on the way to Roma

The Athletic (subscription required) noted that Guardiola and his technical department had realised their error in signing Kalvin Phillips from Leeds in one of the earliest training sessions involving the player.

After subsequently hardly being played by City, Phillips eventually went out on loan to West Ham at the start of 2024, but that move turned out to be even more of a disaster, as one mistake after another dented his confidence.

By the end of his loan spell he wasn’t being played by David Moyes, and his 10 appearances for the Hammers totalled just 320 minutes (WhoScored). They included a red card and not once did he manage a full game for the East Londoners.

His nightmare could soon be over, however, as The Sun are reporting that the playing is considering moving abroad, and all of RB Leipzig, RB Salzburg and Serie A giants, Roma, are interested in his services.

As the Julen Lopetegui era gets underway at West Ham United, the first thing that the Spaniard will need to understand is exactly which players he will have at his disposal.

After an underwhelming season in 2023/24 with David Moyes at the helm, it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that some first team stars may have become disillusioned with their time at the club.

Ultimately, the manager has to make his choice as to who he believes is the best first XI and subs, and if that means that certain players don’t make the match day squads so be it.

West Ham midfielder could decide to move on this summer

There will also be those players that are perhaps deemed too good to be sold but not good enough at any given moment, and to that end a loan move would be arranged.

That was the case with West Ham’s excellent 25-year-old midfielder, Flynn Downes.

Despite being part of the squad which ended the season before last winning the Europa Conference League – the East London outfit’s first major piece of silverware in 43 years – Downes was loaned out to Southampton for the 2023/24 campaign.

Southampton want West Ham's on-loan midfielder Flynn Downes to join permanently
West Ham’s Flynn Downes helped Southampton to promotion via the Play-Off final

Having helped the Saints win promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking thanks to a 1-0 win in the Play-Off final at Wembley, Downes has shown time and again what an important and key member of the team he is.

Loaning him to the Saints could be a decision that the Hammers end up regretting too, as the Daily Echo note that the South Coast outfit are now looking to take the player on a permanent basis.

With 37 games under his belt, most of them playing the full 90 minutes (WhoScored), it’s evident that Downes has become a fully paid up member of Russell Martin’s squad.

That trust from the manager will surely have resonated with Downes, and if believes that he isn’t wanted at West Ham, particularly with a new regime getting their feet under the table, a move to Southampton isn’t the worst in the world for the next stage in his career.
