Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has backed one Liverpool player to potentially make the difference in the race for the Premier League title.
Diogo Jota has returned to full training, Jurgen Klopp has stated, after the Portuguese international was stretchered off in the game against Brentford back in February.
With just seven games remaining, the Premier League title race is at its most intense, with Arsenal leading the pack by a mere point, closely followed by Liverpool, level on points but trailing in goal difference. Manchester City, just one point adrift, loom ominously behind.
Despite grappling with significant injury setbacks, Liverpool have shown remarkable resilience, not only maintaining their title challenge but also clinching the Carabao Cup and progressing to the Europa League quarter-finals.
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has labelled one particular Reds player as “invaluable” as Liverpool aim to record their second Premier League title under Klopp.
Paul Merson labels Diogo Jota as “invaluable” to Liverpool
Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson said: “One player whose return will be invaluable to the German manager is Diogo Jota. I think he’s Liverpool’s best finisher ahead of Mohamed Salah and if he had played, Klopp and co. would have emerged victorious against Manchester United,” via Liverpool Echo.
Jota has netted 14 goals in 28 matches this season, earning praise from Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher, who hailed the 27-year-old as the club’s most proficient finisher in recent decades.
Unfortunately, the Portuguese forward has struggled staying injury-free this term but his importance to the team is underlined in his goal contribution stats.
He has been named on the bench for Liverpool’s home leg against Atalanta on Thursday evening.
