In his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, former Aston Villa attacker Stan Collymore discusses some of football’s biggest talking points, including why Man City’s owners must be taken on, why Jose Mourinho loves a pound note more than himself, why Jack Grealish must be picked for England and much more.

Man City owners must be taken on for the good of the game

Let’s detach Man City as an old historic football club, with supporters that support a team they would all support, whether they’re in the National League or wherever, from the ownership, who have acted disgracefully to work within rules that they’ve been wildly successful under.

They’ve won trophies including four out of the last five Premier Leagues, so by NO measure whatsoever, have the ownership of Manchester City Football Club, in their attempt to make Manchester City successful, had their job hampered by the rules and regulations.

That’s the first thing.

Other clubs such as Aston Villa, Liverpool and Newcastle all agree to operate within the rules, despite, in the Magpies case, they could spend as much as City or arguably more.

You don’t then turn around and go, ‘we’re going to blow the doors off the whole place, and we’re going to sue you.’ The inference from Man City was that they would have to spend less on the academy and less on youth teams and less on youth development but that’s what every other club has to do.

I think that we’re at the time and the place where the red button, the nuclear button may well need to be pressed. And I would say this if it related to any club, such as Aston Villa, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Bournemouth…

If any club is trying to change the material structure of the Premier League to be able to make it a space race ‘free for all,’ then they should be expelled from the league and not come back until they accept the rules as they are.

It’s called a meritocracy and what we all hope and pray for is that when our teams line up on match day one, that we’ve just got a chance of doing something. And this would take away any single remote, lingering hope of any club being able to do what Leicester City did, any club being able to win an FA Cup, any club being able to win a League Cup.

We would have a situation with 40/50 man squads of the best players in the world, whereby one squad plays in the FA Cup, one squad plays in the League Cup, one squad plays in the Premier League, one plays in the Champions League, and you would get quadruples every year.

The reason why these records are breaking is not because these teams are better. It’s because the teams are deeper and better.

And so from my perspective, it’s really simple, the ownership of Manchester City Football Club has to be taken on.

If this was the club I support, Aston Villa, doing what Man City had done over the last 10/12 years, and were now arguing that they will sue the Premier League, I would genuinely, and it’s important to say this, advocate for my own football club to be temporarily kicked out the league until they saw sense.

That’s how serious the situation is.

Grealish brings something different for England and needs to make the cut

Man City star Grealish has to make Euro 2024 squad.

After cutting James Maddison from the England squad this week, Gareth Southgate has a few more decisions to make with the next few days.

There’s rumours that Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones will be next to be given the bad news.

In terms of Jack Grealish, he doesn’t now have the bells and the whistles to drive past people in the box, but what he does have is he keeps the ball very well in that left position.

He’s not as incisive but as we saw with Trent’s goal, he picked his head up and dinked the ball over.

Everybody was getting very excited about Eberechi Eze against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but I didn’t think had a good game. I think he ran into roadblocks time after time. Yes, he got the ball, showed pace, dropped his shoulder and did a couple of step overs, but then he lost the ball and we were counter attacked. Against better teams that’s going to hurt.

Therefore, I’ll probably say that those who won’t make the final cut are Maddison, Quansah, Jones, Eze, James Trafford, Adam Wharton and Luke Shaw. That would be my seven.

If player welfare is important, scrap the ‘breaking new markets’ nonsense

Darwin Nunez scored a hat trick on Wednesday and we’re only less than two weeks after the Premier League finished.

Other than for international tournaments, which tend to start mid June – as we’ve seen with the Euros and their equivalent – I think that we need to have a serious look at post-season friendlies and almost ban teams from going because for the amount of money they get (£2m-£5m a pop) I don’t think it’s financially worthwhile.

When people say ‘Oh, we’re breaking new markets,’ no you’re not. You’re just going for a little greedy couple of million pounds payout, which which will go into the coffers.

I think that any games in the domestic leagues, the Champions League and all European football should be done by the end of May. That can be done. The FA Cup could be in the middle or towards the end of May, and then, like what used to happen with teams winning the European Cup, they’d literally get on a flight and go the next Wednesday or the next Saturday.

There should be a moratorium for end of season friendlies and pre-season friendlies. The calendar should stop at a certain point and proper breaks put in.

When there is no mandated European Championship or World Cup tournament, or if you are not included in those squads for those tournaments, you get four to six weeks off. No exceptions, no tours, no nothing.

All of the superfluous tournaments, lucrative games and the Nations League would be scrapped.

Mourinho loves a pound note more than he loves himself

Jose Mourinho unveiled as Fenerbahce manager.

Jose Mourinho is very clever. What he does is that as his managerial abilities wane, his mouth works over time. We know from the ‘Special One’ thing that he’s having himself, but he was winning major trophies with major clubs at the time.

Let’s not beat about the bush, he likes a pound note. He’s getting paid €21m over two years by Fenerbahce, so he’s not going anywhere for other than top, top, top dollar. You have a look at the deals that he signed with Roma and Fenerbahce and with the greatest respect, neither are getting anywhere near the Champions League. They’re not getting anywhere near the Europa League either.

If you’re a chairman and you see Mourinho popping up on Sky Sports or any television channel around Europe to tell you how great he is, you go ‘Brilliant. We’re going to get him,’ and fans will be lining the streets.

The way to judge him though is when he leaves your club and he left Manchester United and Tottenham much worse off, in my opinion. Of course, the revisionists are now saying he was right about United but Mourinho left the dressing room fractured. At Tottenham, he did nothing. The football was turgid.

So watch this space Fenerbahce fans. You’re all getting very giddy and very excited, but let’s see, in two years time, if your thoughts and memories of Jose Mourinho are the same as when he waved the shirt and kissed the badge.

Pardew chase is a surprise because ‘old school’ managers don’t have a place in a modern Premier League

Old school managers have no place in the modern game, although they should because the Premier League should be about different styles and different systems.

Whether it be longer ball versus Pep ball or 4-4-2 versus 4-3-3, most clubs, on the back of a three plus goals per game Premier League season, want a manager now with all the bells and whistles and whose team defend on the halfway line. Who are a guarantee of three or four goals a game, so the clubs can get punters In.

It’s somewhat of a surprise that Alan Pardew would be considered for the Burnley job because I don’t see his of play being conducive to anything exceptional for Burnley as they’re trying to get back into the Premier League.

You look at the clubs that they’re going to be competing with, pretty much most of them are going to be those that can finish at the top. They’re going to be footballing teams.

Maybe Burnley have identified something and said ‘We’re going to be a bit more industrial. We’re going to be a bit more pragmatic. We’re going to have use old school management to get into them a little bit more,’ and maybe they see something of a Sean Dyche in him, but I just think that what got Burnley out of the championship into the Premier League in the first place was quality on the deck football.

The Sam Allardyce’s, the Neil Warnock’s, the Harry Redknapp’s and the Alan Pardew’s are great at going on podcasts and telling the great tales of yesteryear, but I don’t think in reality, they have the attention to detail or the energy levels that a modern coach has.

The pressure will all be on Gareth Southgate to finally produce an England squad capable of winning a major tournament this summer.

The Three Lions can oh so close in the previous edition of the European Championship, losing on penalties to Italy in the final.

Southgate had also managed to get England to the semi-finals of the World Cup back in 2018, and despite being comfortable against Croatia, they ran out of steam and were eventually beaten.

Therefore, if he wants to go one better than before, he has got to get things spot on in terms of squad selection.

Gareth Southgate drops Jordan Henderson

According to The Athletic (subscription required), ahead of the official announcement, Southgate has already sprung one massive surprise which will almost certainly get tongues wagging.

A player that epitomises all of the qualities that the manager expects from his players is Ajax ace, Jordan Henderson.

Gareth Southgate has left Jordan Henderson out of the England squad
Jordan Henderson has been left out of the provisional England squad for Euro 2024 by Gareth Southgate

The former Liverpool captain is a calm, experienced head in the midfield and a warrior when required, but it seems that his failed move to Saudi Arabia and subsequent inability to help Ajax towards the upper echelons of the Eredivisie – they finished 35 points behind title winners PSV – has cost him his place. His age, 33, will undoubtedly have also counted against him.

The outlet also note that his former club colleague, Curtis Jones, is likely to get a first senior call-up, indicating just how much his star has risen over the past 12-18 months.

There’s sure to be a handful of other surprises when the official announcement comes, not forgetting of course that this is just a provisional squad and more players will need to drop out before the final 26 players are named.

If England go on to do well in the tournament, no one will bat an eyelid, however, if the Three Lions exit the tournament earlier than expected, Southgate will have some explaining to do.

Jurgen Klopp is preparing his Liverpool side for an important run-in.

The Merseyside giants currently sit top of the Premier League table, two points clear of Arsenal and three clear of defending champions Manchester City.

The first of nine incredibly important league games will take place on Thursday evening at home against Chris Wilder’s relegation favourites Sheffield United.

And tomorrow night’s matchup against the Blades could be a must-win before kick off with Arsenal and City both set to play 24 hours earlier.

Liverpool injury news: Curtis Jones in line to return against Sheffield United

However, boosting the Reds’ hopes of securing what would be their 21st league win of the season, Klopp, as per journalist Neil Jones, has confirmed midfielder Curtis Jones is in line to make his long-awaited return from injury.

Jones, 23, has not featured since he suffered an ankle sprain during Liverpool’s 4-1 win at Brentford in February.

Curtis Jones picked up an injury against Brentford back in February.

However, his manager, who spoke to reporters ahead of tomorrow night’s game, revealed the 23-year-old is ‘in contention’ to feature — probably off the bench considering the length of time he’s been out.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Joto boost

Going on to confirm Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota are also close to returning after both suffering knee-related injuries, Klopp said: “Diogo [Jota] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] can be part of team training next week.”

There is also good news for goalkeeper Alisson. The Brazilian suffered a hamstring injury and, like Jones, has not featured since February.

“Alisson looks good as well,” Klopp added. “In his mind as well, next week, parts of team training.”

Thursday night’s game at Anfield, which is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. (UK time), will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 2.

Liverpool will have regrets over Man Utd defeat – but Jurgen Klopp’s post-match strop is not one of them

I think Liverpool will have a lot of regrets at the manner in which they exited the FA Cup at Old Trafford. They didn’t play at their best, nowhere near, but it was still a game they could and should have put to bed, particularly in the second half of the 90. Their lack of precision and sharpness in the final third cost them dear, and while Manchester United deserve credit for their persistence, the Reds can only blame themselves for how the afternoon turned out.

The good news from Liverpool’s perspective is that they have other competitions to go after – this wasn’t do-or-die for their season – but still any defeat against United will hurt, and this one certainly will, given it was an avoidable one.

Jurgen Klopp’s post-match spat with Viaplay’s Niels Christian Frederiksen obviously garnered a bit of attention, and it is by no means the first time the Reds boss has taken exception to a reporter’s line of questioning.

I was surprised that it was ‘that’ question which set him off, as it felt a little tame in all honesty, but as Frederiksen himself pointed out, quite rightly, it is almost part of being a top manager that you don’t take losing particularly well, and I’m sure all will be forgotten next time the pair meet.

I’ve seen Klopp give a bit to other reporters in the past and it’s never become a feud or a long-running grudge, so I don’t expect it to be so this time.

Take Pep Lijnders manager speculation with a pinch of salt

There has again been some talk of Pep Lijnders being an option to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, but I would take that talk with a hefty pinch of salt, given the source, but of course it is not just Klopp who is leaving Liverpool this summer, it’s the bulk of his coaching staff too, and there’s no doubt that Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, in particular, have been a big part of the Reds’ success in recent years. That said, the idea that Liverpool’s players would be offering strong opinions as to who the next manager should be is rather fanciful to me.

I don’t think there’s any chance Lijnders will get the top job at this stage, and nor should he either. If we are questioning the experience of Xabi Alonso, Ruben Amorim or Roberto De Zerbi, then we have to do the same with Lijnders, whose senior managerial career amounts to a few months at NEC Nijmegen.

There’s no question that he is a big figure, day-to-day, at Liverpool, and his coaching credentials are excellent, but I think even he would accept that if he is looking to re-start his career as a head coach, he needs to go and prove himself elsewhere before stepping into the big job on Merseyside. I expect to see him in the dugout somewhere next season, just not at Anfield.

Liverpool midfield duo continue to be overlooked by England

Harvey Elliott has had a really good season and he, like Curtis Jones, will certainly have his eye on breaking into the senior England squad going forward. I wonder whether Jones would already be in, had he not suffered that injury against Brentford last month.

Elliott’s problem, perhaps, is that he is used as often from the bench as he is from the start – he earned the ‘super sub’ tag at Liverpool earlier in the season – and that he kind of falls between two positions, playing either as a right-sided No.8 or as a right winger. I don’t see him breaking into the England squad as the latter, and he has a few established names to compete with in the former.

Jordan Henderson, certainly, is one that should be looking over his shoulder and looking at the likes of Elliott, Jones, Kobbie Mainoo and others. He’s been a good player for Liverpool, but at 33 he will know that the younger generation is at the door. The likes of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are certainties in England’s midfield going forward, and it is up to the rest to elbow their way in.

Certainly, Elliott has improved his chances this season. He’s a star at U21 level, but I don’t see him making the Euros squad unless there is a raft of injuries at this stage. Jones, I would say, is closer but needs to steer clear of injuries.

Liverpool like Jamal Musiala but it’s not an easy transfer

Bayern Munich look like they are going to have a summer of real change, in the dugout and within their squad, and there are certainly a few players that could be in the minds of a lot of top clubs. Joshua Kimmich, for example, is being linked away, although from a Liverpool perspective I’d be giving that one a wide berth.

Serge Gnabry, too, seems like a far-fetched link when it comes to Liverpool. He’ll be 29 in July and has not played an awful lot of football over the past few months. Liverpool are not in the business of spending big money and dishing out big contracts to such players. The same goes for Leroy Sane, who turned 28 in January.

Musiala is different. At 21 he has his best years ahead of him, and he absolutely has the potential to be one of the very best in his position. I know that from a Bayern point of view, they are desperate to retain him, and I also know that pretty much every other top club in Europe, Liverpool included, would want to be in the conversation should he leave. I don’t imagine Manchester City or Real Madrid would be sitting on their hands there!

Liverpool’s stance whenever I’ve asked has always been a ‘well, yes, of course we like him’ but as far as I’m aware there is nothing more concrete than that, despite the links. If I were a gambler, I’d bet on him staying at Bayern – even if I would love to see him at Anfield!

The last week or so has been disastrous for Liverpool regarding injuries as several key players are set to miss multiple matches, which includes the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Reds will be without Trent Alexander-Arnold for the Wembley showpiece and last weekend saw other key stars added to the hospital list.

Alisson picked up a muscle injury during training on Friday, while Saturday’s match against Brentford saw Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota exit in the first half.

Klopp is also waiting to hear the latest fitness report on other major stars such as Darwin Nunez, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah ahead of Luton Town on Wednesday.

Speaking at his press conference on Tuesday ahead of the clash with the Hatters, the German coach provided an update on Liverpool’s injury issues.

Will Darwin Nunez be fit for the Luton Town match?

The biggest news from the Liverpool boss’ press conference is that Jota will be out of action for “months”, while Jones and Alisson will miss the Carabao Cup final.

“Not great, I would like to say no issues but we have some,” Klopp said about the Reds’ injury problems via the Liverpool Echo.

“Not available: Ali, muscle injury, we don’t know how long it will take but definitely not the foreseeable time coming back. Then we have Diogo with a knee issue is ruled out. Curtis, with a bone/ligament issue, is ruled out.”

Klopp added: “With Diogo, it will obviously rather take months (not weeks). And Curtis… with injuries you have important days, like day five or day 10, when you judge the situation again, because not everyone reacts in the same way. It depends on the pain level they still have and stuff like this. I couldn’t give you a timeframe even if I wanted to. They all react differently. That is just how it is. When you don’t have these players it makes no sense (to speculate).”

Liverpool will be without Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones for this weekend’s Carabao Cup final as the duo have been ruled out after picking up injuries against Brentford on Saturday.

Jota and Jones were forced off in the first half of the Reds’ 4-1 win over the Bees with knee and ankle injuries to add to Jurgen Klopp’s injury woes.

According to the Telegraph, both stars have undergone scans in the last 24 hours, which have confirmed that they will not be available for Liverpool’s forthcoming matches, which include a Wembley date with Chelsea on Sunday.

The Merseyside club have somewhat of an injury crisis at the moment and the weekend’s win over Brentford was a costly one.

Klopp has a lot of injuries to deal with heading into the Carabao Cup final

Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been ruled out of the Carabao Cup with a knee problem and the fitness of goalkeeper Alisson is uncertain having suffered a muscle injury in training on Friday.

These are all major players for Klopp and the German coach is still waiting to find out about Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Núñez.

One group of people that this does benefit is Chelsea as the Blues could see a totally different team across from them than the one that hammered them 4-1 at Anfield last month.

Liverpool take on Arsenal away from home in the Premier League later today in what looks set to be a hugely important game in the title race.

The Reds are one of the in-form teams in Europe at the moment and recently won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup, though the Gunners’ form has improved since then.

It’s a hard game to call, but Liverpool really seem to be playing at a high level as they head into their final few months under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, who recently made the surprise announcement that he’d be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

Klopp will be desperate to get another league title under his belt at Liverpool after coming close on so many occasions but finishing as champions just once, and one imagines his team would be firm favourites with three points at Arsenal today.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool

Still, LFC will have to make do without Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, so it’s not going to be their strongest side, even if Trent Alexander-Arnold should return…

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate; Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones; Gakpo, Jota, Diaz.

Jurgen Klopp singled out midfielder Curtis Jones for his brilliant performance before aiming a playful dig at him.

The Liverpool academy graduate has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season, putting in solid performances in the midfield consistently.

And he was brilliant once again during Liverpool’s FA Cup win. He opened the scoring for the Reds, with a lovely header from a James McConnell assist. This was his 5th goal of the season.

In addition to his goal, the local talent contributed defensively with one tackle, three successful ground duels, two key passes, and a 100% dribble success rate.

He has shown the most improvement in his defensive work, gradually transforming into a midfielder who increasingly resembles a complete player.

Klopp took a light-hearted jab at Jones, highlighting the player’s significant improvement in his defensive capabilities. During an interview with ITV Sport after the win, Klopp remarked:

“Curtis is in a great moment for us. He’s super important in different departments for us.

“He’s a very good player and he’s kind of a role model as well for all our academy guys. Coming up from the academy, all our boys are good footballers, all of them. Otherwise they would not go through all the different age groups.”

“If Curtis Jones can learn defending, everybody can learn defending!”.

“This high press, this intensity, he is setting the rhythm for us.”

Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders has made a strong plea to England manager Gareth Southgate, urging him to include Curtis Jones in the national squad.

The midfielder, set to turn 23 this month, has been in exceptional form for Liverpool this season, playing a crucial role in Jurgen Klopp’s rebuilding efforts at Anfield. Despite facing highs and lows since his debut in 2019, Jones found his stride towards the end of last season, featuring in the final 11 games where Liverpool remained unbeaten.

Curtis Jones is currently a key figure leading Liverpool’s charge on multiple fronts this season. With the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Fulham approaching, Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders has emphasised that the midfielder must be considered for Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

“It is a no brainer,” the Reds assistant manager exclaimed during the press conference. “You have eyes, no? If you are top of the league and one of the most decisive players in the team, the player who with and without the ball sets the tone and takes the initiative and always shows up, then.”

While Curtis Jones has yet to make a senior appearance for the England national team, he played a pivotal role in helping the England U21’s secure victory in the Euros last summer.
