Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not replace Gareth Southgate as England coach following the 53-year-old’s decision to step down from his role with the Three Lions.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Southgate would resign as manager of England following their Euro 2024 campaign in Germany. The former defender guided the Three Lions to the final in Berlin but they fell short having succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Spain.

This leaves England looking for a new coach for the first time in eight years and having recently left his role as Liverpool manager, many fans wanted to see the FA approach legendary coach Jurgen Klopp.

However, it is being reported by The Telegraph that the German will not be available to replace Southgate in time for the start of the World Cup qualifiers as the former Reds manager has no intention of returning to top-level management for another 12 months.

The report says that it will be July 2025 before the 57-year-old is ready to take on a new project.

That means the FA would have to begin their World Cup qualification with a caretaker or interim manager before they could entertain the idea of Klopp taking over in the build-up to the 2026 tournament.

Jurgen Klopp is correct to take a break from football

Klopp was recently approached by the United States to gauge his interest in replacing Gregg Berhalter as manager of the country’s national team, but the German did not enter any formal discussions with the 2026 World Cup co-hosts.

It is clear that the former Liverpool boss intends to take a proper break having been coaching teams for the last 23 years.

After agreeing to serve as an honorary ambassador for the LFC Foundation, the club’s charity organisation, Jurgen Klopp has maintained his relationship with Liverpool.

According to The Mirror, the former Liverpool manager has still continued his connection with the club after becoming an honorary ambassador of the club’s Foundation.

The German manager left Liverpool at the end of last season after joining the club back in 2015.

He became the most successful Reds manager in the last three decades as he guided the club to success in the Premier League and the Champions League.

Klopp came to Anfield after leaving Borussia Dortmund and instantly became a fan favourite.

He not only changed Liverpool’s fortunes on the pitch while also building a unique playing style that was admired around the world but also created a connection with the fans and the community.

The iconic German manager operated on a limited budget at Anfield and helped the club in finishing the dominance of Manchester City who have been hugely backed financially by their owners.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has turned down the chance to take over as the head coach of the United States Men’s National Team after initial contact was made with the German last week. 

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) sacked Gregg Berhalter on Wednesday following the USMNT’s disappointing group-stage exit at this summer’s Copa America, which was hosted on home soil.

The American coach has been in charge of the United States since 2018 across two spells and helped them qualify for the World Cup in 2022, as well as delivering the Gold Cup in 2021 and two CONCACAF Nations League titles.

However, it was clear during the Copa America that America have regressed as a team and that was a big concern ahead of the country hosting the World Cup in 2026.

The USSF knew they had to make a change and had big ambitions to make Klopp their next coach.

However, the former Liverpool boss has turned down the opportunity after contact was made with the German coach last week, with the 57-year-old reiterating that he would like a break from football, reports The Athletic.

Sources have told the outlet that US Soccer are still keen on making Klopp their next head coach and are likely to make another approach in the future.

What next for Jurgen Klopp?

As the report states, Klopp is likely to take a break from football for several years having consistently managed teams since 2001. The German boss has been very successful across his roles at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, with the 57-year-old idolised by all three.

Klopp left the Premier League club at the end of last season having spent nine years on Merseyside. The German became a hero at Anfield having delivered every trophy possible and returned the Reds to the top table in European football.

It is uncertain where the legendary coach will end up next, that’s if he does return, but whoever lands him can count themselves very lucky.

The German manager decided to leave the Liverpool job as he wanted a break from football having managed one of the biggest clubs in the world for almost nine years.

He guided the Reds to success in the Premier League and the Champions League and after his exit from Anfield, it was expected that he would be offered some of the biggest jobs in world football.

According to unnamed reports from Spain, cited by Teamtalk, Klopp could be offered the chance to become the manager of Germany following their Euro 2024 exit.

Hosts Germany lost against Spain in the quarterfinal of the competition despite being one of the the favourites to win the tournament.

They have a talented squad with a mixture of young talent and experienced players but they fell short of reaching the expectations of the fans.

With the Germans now looking to part ways with current manager Julian Nagelsmann, Klopp has become the new favourite to replace him.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp explained that when he was set to leave his job at Anfield it was because he had run out of energy, so he certainly deserves a well-earned break on his holidays this summer.

The Arne Slot era at Liverpool is underway as the Dutch coach sat in front of the press on Friday with the new Reds boss unveiling one of the big reasons he decided to accept the job at Anfield. 

The former Feyenoord coach has huge shoes to fill at Liverpool as he is the first new boss at Anfield for nine years following the very successful reign of his predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

The German coach decided to bring his time at the Premier League giants to an end last season but has left the Merseyside outfit in a very good place for Slot to take over.

Speaking at his first press conference as Liverpool coach on Friday, the Dutchman revealed that this was one of the reasons why he decided to accept the job despite having to follow one of the club’s greatest-ever managers.

“Big shoes to fill but also I inherited a squad that has a winning culture and one of the reasons to come here is that I do feel we have a real good squad,” Slot said via Paul Gorst.

“As a manager, you want to work with good players to win something. Past has shown that here.”

Can Arne Slot take the current Liverpool squad to the next level?

There were major changes at Liverpool last summer which saw the Reds’ entire midfield undergo an overhaul. This brought great results for most of the campaign as Klopp’s side challenged on all fronts but that fell off around March, resulting in the team winning only the Carabao Cup.

There is a lot of potential in the squad Klopp has left behind and many will be wondering if Slot can bring the best out of them.

Liverpool only need one or two additions this summer and the Dutch coach will be happy with what he already has at Anfield. With the 45-year-old having a similar style to his Reds predecessor, the transition should not be too complicated for the team and it could result in the Merseyside outfit mounting another title challenge during the 2024/25 campaign.

Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp left Anfield at the end of last season after a hugely successful time at the Premier League club.

The German manager guided the Reds to Premier League and Champions League glory during his nine-year stay at the Merseyside club.

Klopp became an instant favourite after building a world class team at Anfield and adopting a style of play that was appreciated and recognised all over the world.

He decided to take a break from football claiming that he is running out of energy at the end of last season.

However, the iconic German has now received a new job offer by former Premier League goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Howard has offered to go to Spain to speak with the former Reds manager about taking over as manager of the US national team because he thinks he can convince Klopp to do so.

The former Everton goalkeeper penned a piece for the Daily Mail, in which he wrote:

“After the disappointment of Copa America, after the United States lost to Uruguay and exited at the group stages, I will personally fly to Spain. I mean it.

Liverpool star Diogo Jota has revealed that Klopp still contacts his players even after quitting the club.

The German manager has since been replaced by Arne Slot, who has been given the responsibility of guiding Liverpool to success similar to Klopp’s.

The Portugal international has claimed Klopp messaged him after Portugal’s Euro 2024 match in which Jota celebrated the goal by putting the ball inside his shirt to celebrate the incoming birth of his child.

The goal was later disallowed but Klopp found out that Jota and his partner are expecting the birth of their child.

“By chance he sent a message after the first game,” Jota said at a press conference after the match, via O Jogo.

A new era at Liverpool begins on August 17 as Arne Slot takes over as the Reds’ head coach away at Ipswich Town and the Dutch coach has already made a comment about the 12:30 kick-off time. 

It is fair to say that his predecessor Jurgen Klopp did not like this timeslot and often complained about it for various and understandable reasons.

Liverpool were often chosen to play at this time after international breaks which gave their players very little time to prepare for games, especially those coming back from South America. Klopp could not understand why the Merseyside club were put in the timeslot so often and it eventually got to the German coach.

Klopp’s first game in charge of Liverpool was ironically a 12:30 kick-off against Tottenham at White Hart Lane back in October 2015 and Slot will now start his era at Anfield at the same time away at Ipswich.

The former Feyenoord boss has already made a comment about the timeslot and it is one that will go down well with fans of the Reds.

Arne Slot comments on Liverpool’s 12:30 kick-off against Ipswich Town

During his final two seasons in the Premier League, Klopp saw his side claim all three points in only five of 12 early games.

It seems like some sort of joke that the minute the German leaves, Liverpool are back in that timeslot for Slot’s first game in charge of the Merseyside club.

The Dutch coach has alluded to this and has joked about Klopp’s dislike for this timeslot.

Speaking to Liverpool’s media, Slot has said via David Lynch: “They’ve told me it’s going to be 12.30… from what I know, Jurgen complained a lot about this so probably they thought, with Jurgen being out let’s put them at 12.30 again!”
