Leeds United could allow Jamie Shackleton to leave the club this summer, according to journalist Dan Bardell.

Now 24 years old, the former England youth international broke through at Elland Road back in the 2018/19 campaign and has made 94 senior appearances for Leeds across all competitions — including 27 in the Premier League.

However, Shackleton played just 15 times for the Whites across all competitions last season, following on from being loaned out to Millwall in 2022/23.

Shackleton’s contract expires this summer and according to reports, Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United are interested in bringing him to Bramhall Lane.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Shackleton — who can play as a central midfielder or full-back — with Leeds confirming via their official website in June that they were in talks over a new deal.

Should Leeds allow Shackleton to leave?

Despite talks over a fresh deal, it seems more likely that Shackleton will leave Leeds this summer, with Football Insider even claiming he has already passed a medical with Sheffield United.

According to Sky Sports journalist Bardell, Leeds supporters shouldn’t be too worried about the academy graduate leaving the club given how his career has stalled in recent years.

“I think it’s maybe gone a bit stale for him at Leeds,” Bardell told MOT Leeds News.

“He might not have progressed the way that they would have hoped. I think it’ll prove to be a good move for him but it isn’t necessarily a loss for Leeds either.

“I think they have bigger worries than letting Shackleton go this summer to be honest.

“They’ll wish him well after coming through the academy but I wouldn’t be massively worried in this deal if I was a Leeds fan.“

With Leeds United set to go through major changes this summer, one of their players is heading to join their rivals soon.

The Whites failed to win promotion to the Premier League and a number of their players are linked with an exit from Elland Road.

The likes of Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto, Archie Gray and a few others are attracting the attention of some Premier League clubs.

However, Jamie Shackleton may soon be heading out of the club to join their Championship rivals.

Following their recent relegation back to the Championship, the Blades will be trying to assemble a team that can win them promotion again to the top flight of English football.

And it seems that in order to do so, they are looking to their Yorkshire rivals and possible promotion opponents.

Jamie Shackleton is heading out of Leeds United.

According to Sheffield Star, Sheffield United are reportedly trying to take advantage of Shackleton’s hesitation to sign a new contract at Elland Road by luring him to Bramall Lane.

The coming weekend marks the expiration of the Leeds utility player’s current Elland Road contract, setting off a furious competition for his services among second-tier teams.

Leeds United are losing a crucial squad player

Leeds will be disappointed to lose Shackleton even if he never made a name for himself as a regular after coming through the club’s youth system in the 2018–19 campaign.

After all, they were in talks to extend his contract at Elland Road.

Shackleton, a versatile player with experience of playing in midfield and at full back, will be added to Sheffield United’s lineup to provide them additional alternatives.

With only two games to go until the end of the Championship season, Leeds United still aren’t guaranteed an automatic promotion place.

Daniel Farke’s side are currently in second place and are four points behind leaders, Leicester City.

They are ahead of Ipswich Town by a point but the Portman Road based side have a game in hand.

The race for promotion looks likely to be going to the final day of the season, and the all whites have a tough fixture against Southampton to close out their 2023/24 campaign.

Leeds likely to let Jamie Shackleton leave

That the Elland Road outfit are even in the mix for automatic promotion is nothing short of a miracle.

Farke was having to work with one hand tied behind his back when he began his tenure at Leeds, given that for a few weeks into the season he was still powerless to stop players leaving or being sold.

New owner, 49ers Enterprises, obviously wanted to trim the fat off the squad so to speak, so it was a good while before Leeds had anything like a settled squad.

It’s therefore to Farke’s great credit that, a couple of blips notwithstanding, he’s been able to guide the club into the position they are at present.

MOT Leeds News note that one player who was a regular at the beginning of the campaign now isn’t getting a look in, and that’s likely to have spelt the end of his career at Leeds.

Jamie Shackleton has been injured and ill at various stages of the campaign, and in his stead, other players have come to the fore.

The 24-year-old has found it harder and harder to get back into the starting XI, and with his contract at the club due to run out on June 30, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that the club will allow him to leave.

As domestic fixtures come back into view, one Leeds United ace has been advised to take a leaf out of Kalvin Phillips’ book if he wants to ensure more game time for himself.

Daniel Farke has got Leeds playing with purpose now, and he’ll surely want to see his new side pick up three points against his old employers, Norwich City, on Saturday.

The all whites sit just two points above the Canaries and whilst a loss won’t necessarily harm the visitors, it will disrupt their momentum.

Norwich supporters will remember only too fondly the way in which the German got the squad up into the Premier League, and that’s an expectation for Leeds this season.

Should that happen, Jamie Shackleton might want to look for alternative employment according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist, Graham Smyth.

“Shackleton would clearly love nothing more than to remain at Leeds beyond the end of his current contract next summer but if the Whites are to be promoted will he play in the Premier League?’ he wrote.

“He did in the first two post-promotion campaigns, although not as often as he would have liked, and then spent last season out on loan with Millwall.

“At some point, if Shackleton wants to be as ever-present in a team as [Kalvin] Phillips was at Leeds prior to his exit, then following his old pal out the door might be a necessary step.

“On the evidence of this season so far, there is a place for Shackleton at Leeds and giving up a potential second promotion, this time with fans present, would be a hard pill to swallow.”

According to WhoScored, Shackleton has made nine appearances in all competitions this season, though as Smyth suggests, stepping up a division might well see the 24-year-old drop back down the pecking order again.

To that end and given his age, there’s an argument that it’s now or never for Shackleton should Leeds get the promotion they covet.

Were he to stay at Elland Road only to find history repeating itself, he’d only have himself to blame.

Things have certainly proved to be nothing if not exciting for Daniel Farke since his appointment as manager of Leeds United.

The German has had a multitude of issues to deal with, but fortunately with the closure of the summer transfer market came a sense of calm.

The Elland Road outfit have had a start to their 2023/24 Championship campaign which mirrors their off-field chaos, and they currently find themselves in 15th position on six points, with one win, three draws and one loss to show for their five games played.

It’s arguably not the start that Farke, new owners, 49ers Enterprises, and the fans would’ve wanted, but when placed in context, it’s a wonder that the all whites have managed any points at all, such has been the upheaval.

In any event, one player has, somewhat unexpectedly, shone for Farke so far this season; Jamie Shackleton.

According to Phil Hay of The Athletic (subscription required), Shackleton hasn’t yet been offered an extension to his current deal which has less than 12 months to run, however, given the standard of his performances, it appears likely that Farke may well instigate talks in due course.

For a player that was on loan at Millwall for the entirety of last season and appeared to be on the verge of leaving before Farke’s appointment, that’s some turnaround.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke did his best to keep Jamie Shackleton at the club during this summer’s transfer window.

It seems the 23-year-old’s future was unclear during the summer after he spent last season on loan at Millwall, but Farke was keen for the club not to let him go.

According to The Athletic, Shackleton impressed Farke during pre-season and this led to the club’s new manager personally fighting to keep hold of him.

Leeds fans will now hope Shackleton can finally live up to this potential and become a key player in the LUFC first-team after some slow progress since he first made his debut as a teenager.

Leeds United have enjoyed a reasonable pre-season, having not unexpectedly lost to Man United and AS Monaco, but beating Nottingham Forest and Hearts.

Daniel Farke is likely to be more interested in team shape and dynamic at this stage as, if he’s able to get that right, the results will follow.

What he will need is a committed playing staff. A squad willing to run through brick walls for the German and carry his instructions out to the letter.

It’s a big ask for Farke to get the Elland Road outfit straight back up to the Premier League, however, it’s certainly achievable and that has to be the aim from all concerned at the club.

Some players won’t make the cut for the first-team of course, and to that end, Leeds Live are reporting that Jamie Shackleton is ‘done’ at the club.

The 23-year-old only has 12 months of his current deal remaining and apparently hasn’t done enough to impress the powers that be at the club.

Now, more than ever, Leeds can’t afford to carry any passengers. Players have to be at the top level each and every week if they want to have a chance of leaving the rest of the Championship in their slipstream.

By moving on players like Shackleton, it gives the club a bit more room financially too, which can only be a good thing moving forward.

Jamie Shackleton’s agent is said to want a move for his player this summer as he struggles for starts on loan at Millwall.

Agent Hayden Evans told Phil Hay of the Athletic that said that Shackleton has become annoyed at his situation on loan with the Lions from Leeds, where the midfielder has started just 16 times this season.

It’s been frustrating for Jamie. He’s not getting the minutes, but the side are winning. When he’s come on, he’s done well and Millwall have applauded that. But he’s not getting enough minutes.

Shackleton (right) tackling Josh Laurent of Stoke City

“He’s got a year at Leeds, so we probably need to find him a permanent move away. He needs to be starting games, and he’s good enough. The quality he has has not diminished in any way. He trains and works hard.”

With 27 Premier League appearances to his name at Leeds, Shackleton isn’t short of minutes at the top level, but with the likes of Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie looking like they will be the full time midfield starters for Leeds going forward, perhaps a move for Shackleton is the best thing for him and his career.

“He knows that he and the club are almost done,” said Hay in an article with The Athletic.

Shackleton is currently on loan at Millwall, who have a deal in place to sign him on a permanent at the end of the season.

Leeds United ace Jamie Shackleton is reportedly aware that his career with the club is likely to be over after going out on loan.

The 22-year-old hadn’t managed to make himself a regular for Leeds, and will now spend the rest of the campaign on loan at Millwall.

Still, it seems Shackleton is not optimistic that he’ll be back at Elland Road at the end of his loan spell, according to The Athletic.

Some Leeds fans will undoubtedly be disappointed that this promising young player hasn’t managed to fulfil his potential.

It remains to be seen if there might end up being a way back for him after all, but it makes sense that his long-term future probably now lies away from the Yorkshire outfit.
