Roberto De Zerbi praised the Brighton recruitment staff for the signing of Joao Pedro and admitted that he did not know who the forward was before he joined the club.

In an enthralling game on Saturday afternoon, Brighton progressed to the next round of the FA Cup after beating Stoke City 4-2.

The Seagulls went behind early on when Jan Paul van Hecke put the home side in front before Brighton levelled it up in first-half extra time through Pervis Estupinan.

Lewis Dunk then put his side ahead just after the break with Lewis Baker levelling things up once again from the spot.

Then within the space of ten minutes, Pedro scored two vital goals to secure a 4-2 victory for the Premier League club.

Speaking after the game, De Zerbi praised the forward revealing that he did not know who he was before he signed.

The man of the moment Joao Pedro has bagged his second penalty of the night, and his third goal contribution to go with it.

These two penalties have helped the Brazilian to register seven goals in his last nine matches in all competitions.

Pedro, who stepped up confidently the first time, did so once again but this time he placed the ball in the opposite corner of the net.

This is something of a statement win, even despite the Seagulls failing to keep a clean sheet because Alejo Veliz has scored his first Tottenham goal with less than 10 minutes to play.

Joao Pedro’s penalty doubles Brighton’s lead against Spurs. This is the sixth Premier League goal of the season for the Brazilian.

The home side have completely stunned the visitors tonight, who were heavy favourites against the Seagulls.

No player in Europe’s top five league’s has scored more penalties in all competitions than Pedro’s seven.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side are firmly in the drivers seat with half an hour played, and it’s largely thanks to Joao Pedro’s involvement – registering a goal and an assist in this magnificent first half performance.

Ange Postecoglou will need to find a way to revitalise Tottenham quickly, or else things could turn messy on the scoreline.

Brighton and Hove Albion are into the Europa League knockout stages as group winners after Joao Pedro’s late winner at the AMEX Stadium sparked scenes of utter pandemonium.

The Seagulls were made to work hard by Gennaro Gattuso’s Marseille side, and it wasn’t until the 88th minute that they made the breakthrough, Joao Pedro swivelling inside the box and firing high into the net.

As the goalscorer jumped into the crowd to celebrate, Roberto De Zerbi and his backroom staff also celebrated wildly on the bench as the decibel levels went up a notch.

Mauricio Pochettino criticised the officiating and shared his halftime challenge with his 10-man Chelsea side in the chaotic 3-2 win over Brighton.

Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill’s headers from corners had put Chelsea in a comfortable position. But on the stroke of halftime, Conor Gallagher was shown a red card moments after Facundo Buonanotte scored for the visitors.

At halftime, Pochettino told his team they had an “opportunity” and explained how he lifted his vulnerable-looking team.

“I told them it is 2-1 and these things happen. It is a great opportunity and a massive challenge for us to show we are a team and it will improve us,” he stated post-game.

The Argentinian coach was also critical of referee Craig Pawson, during his interview after the game, after he sent off Gallagher, saying: “I don’t think it is a sending off, but I may be wrong.”

Fernandez scored a crucial penalty in the second half against Brighton, ultimately earning three points for Chelsea, Pochettino added: “Why was the penalty of [Mykhailo] Mudryk waiting for VAR and he gave the [Colwill] handball? It is so weird the way we use VAR sometimes.”

Chelsea are now ten points behind fourth placed Aston Villa, and eight points behind London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy fifth.

The latest Premier League team of the week from Garth Crooks is in, and of course there’s a place for Alejandro Garnacho after his stunning bicycle kick goal for Manchester United in their 3-0 win away to Everton.

The young Argentine stole the show and arguably stole the whole weekend with his memorable strike, which has been compared to classic goals by legends such as Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

Still, Crooks also found room for some classy performers from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle and Crystal Palace in this week’s team for BBC Sport, with a full picture of the team below…

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Erling Haaland were certainly stand-out performers in the big game of the weekend between Man City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium, while Declan Rice put in another solid display to help Arsenal to a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Brentford.

All in all, it’s a strong line up, even if Crooks’ formations continue to be a little baffling, with two very attack-minded players in Anthony Gordon and Michael Olise lining up as wing-backs here.

Brighton and Hove Albion signed Joao Pedro during the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old attacker was linked with a move to the Premier League 12 months before that as well. Newcastle United were keen on the player but Watford refused a £30 million bid from the Premier League side.

Pedro has now opened up on the situation and revealed that he was thoroughly disappointed when Watford turned down a substantial offer from Newcastle.

However, he feels that he has now earned a move to Brighton and it was the right decision for him.

“I had this negotiation with Newcastle,” Pedro recalls, speaking to Globo Esporte. “Until months ago, I was upset about not leaving. However, I said ‘now is my moment at Watford. I have to make (a big-money transfer) happen (with my performances).

“I made it happen, and I think it was the best way (to join) Brighton. It’s a club that gives opportunities to young people. They believe in us.

“I made the right choice. I’m very happy here.”

Brighton have a tendency to give opportunities to young players and Pedro has certainly flourished in his new environment. The attacker has six goals across all competitions, and he will look to establish himself as one of the best young attackers in the Premier League with regular football at Brighton.

After Brighton had suffered defeats to Chelsea in the Carabao cup (1-0), Aston Villa in the Premier League (6-1) and a draw after going 2-0 down to Marseille in midweek, Brighton managed a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Amex.

Brighton have had a poor few weeks, especially defensively with mistakes costing them in recent times. With a few injuries in the squad, a few changes were made to freshen up the side, with the likes of Simon Adingra, Carlos Baleba and Igor Julio coming in. These changes gave Brighton a different energy than they have had in recent weeks, and there was definently chances for the Seagulls to beat Liverpool.

Read on for our Brighton player ratings, and who stood out for the Seagulls…

Bart Verbruggen – 6.5 – Made two saves inside the box, and played 44 successful passes showing his importance for Brighton in build up. Not much he could do about the goals, one being a penalty.

Solly March – 7.5 – March played further back than usual, playing as a left back but with license to go forward and overlap Mitoma. Got the assist from a freekick for Lewis Dunk’s goal and made a whopping six tackles.

Igor Julio – 6 – Looked to be suffering from a knock throughout the game, and was subbed off in the 63rd minute. Still managed two key passes from defense and contributed well for Brighton in possession.

Lewis Dunk – 7.5 – Dunk scored the important equaliser for Brighton, and made one key pass from the back. Dunk was also very solid defensively with two aerial duels won out of three, three out of three ground duels won, three clearances, one block and one tackle.

Joel Veltman – 6 – Veltman made a few clearances and a tackle but had the likes of Nunez drifting over to his side and cause him problems. He only made 17 passes (14 successful) with an 82% pass accuracy, and he also lost both of his aerial duels.

Pascal Gross – 6 – Gross looked to drop between the central defenders in this game, to help with build up play, he had a few poor passes in central areas losing possession 10 times, but Gross did manage one key pass and a pass accuracy of 89% despite playing six long balls.

Carlos Baleba – 7.5 – Baleba added a much needed presence in midfield, covering a lot of ground and getting stuck in. He made two blocks, three interceptions and two tackles, along with four out of four long balls completed.

Kaoru Mitoma – 5.5 – Not the most impactful game from Mitoma we have seen, only managing one shot which was off target and one cross. Much more went down the opposite side for Brighton.

Joao Pedro – 6.5 – Pedro was involved, making two key passes and had two shots (one blocked and one off target). However he also lost possession quite a few times in dangerous deeper areas with his back to goal, losing possession 11 times.

Simon Adingra – 8 – The real bright spark for Brighton, won the ball back and scored for their first goal, and was direct at every chance down his flank. Completed three out of nine dribbles attempted, had two shots on target, completed two out of two long balls and of course scored his goal.

Evan Ferguson – 5 – Wasn’t very involved and was taken off after 60 minutes. Only had 24 touches, losing possession six times and only having the one shot off target, quiet day for Ferguson.

Subs: Danny Welbeck 6, Jan Paul van Hecke 5, Ansu Fati N/A.

Though it came very late in the second half, Joao Pedro’s spot-kick looked to have earned Brighton and Hove Albion a vital point against Marseille in the Europa League.

The French giants had raced into a two-goal first-half lead, both goals coming inside two minutes.

The Seagulls managed to stop the rot and managed to get themselves back into the game thanks to a second-half strike from Pascal Gross.

With time running out, Joao Pedro was the calmest man on the pitch to equalise for Roberto De Zerbi’s team.
