Liverpool manager has revealed the reason he opted to leave Raheem Sterling on the bench for the Reds’ final clash of the season versus Stoke City, claiming the winger has had a “difficult few months”.

The England international has had a tumultuous second half of the season; as reports of rejecting a new contract at Anfield, along with the recent news that he told boss Rodgers that he wants to leave the club in the summer have emerged [via BBC Sport].
The most controversial moment of his season came when, earlier this week, his agent incredibly told reporters that Sterling wouldn’t even accept a contract worth £900,000 per-week to remain at the club.
It was therefore unknown whether he would feature in Liverpool’s closing game of the campaign, and Rodgers opted not to play the youngster, believing that others could put in a better performance given his troubles off the pitch.
The Northern Irish manager revealed after the defeat to Stoke, “It’s been a difficult few months for him [Sterling] and we felt other players might be able to contribute that bit more,” as quoted by the Daily Star.
