Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies had a disappointing end to the 2024 Copa America as his failed Panenka attempt sealed Canada’s loss to Uruguay in the third-place game.

After Jonathan David and Luis Suarez scored late goals to push the match to a penalty kick shootout, Canada would fall short of pulling off the upset win over the South American side.

Ismaël Koné missed his penalty kick shootout attempt and Davies had to make his attempt or else it was over for Canada. The 23-year-old’s shot beat the goalkeeper as the player went with the Panenka, but the ball hit off the top crossbar and out, sealing the win for Uruguay.

Canada was already down 2-0, and the situation worsened as they lost Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies, who was substituted off due to injury. The defender was on the receiving end of a tackle from Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo De Paul.

Davies left the pitch limping and attempted to get back on to help his team overcome the situation. However, after entering the pitch again, he quickly asked to be subbed out. It will be interesting to see if Davies can play the third-place game or if his tournament is over.

Former Watford standout Ismaël Koné has sent Canada into the semifinal of the 2024 Copa America. After the Canadians took the 1-0 lead in the first half, Venezuela responded in the second half to level the scoring 1-1.

Neither team could find the game-winning goal in the remaining time, so the matchup went to a penalty kick shootout. Venezuela missed three shots, while Canada failed twice. As a result, Koné had the chance to win it for Canada, and the current Marseille player scored; now Jesse Marsch and his team will get a second crack at facing Argentina.

In a tightly contested 2024 Copa América match between Canada and Peru on Tuesday evening at Children’s Mercy Park, LOSC Lille standout Jonathan David scored the lone goal.

The two sides played a scoreless first half. The Canadians generated five shots total, while the Peruvians countered with only one shot total. In the second half, Peru played the rest of the contest with 10 men after Miguel Araujo received a red card in the 58th minute.

With the man advantage, Canada would eventually find the back of the net as David broke the scoreless game with a goal in the 74th minute.

Moreover, OptaJack highlighted on X that 26 of David’s 27 goals for Canada have been scored in competitive matches.

David’s goal is crucial not just to help Canada advance but also to boost his profile. The 24-year-old is rumored to be on the move this summer, as there are links to Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

A strong showing at the Copa América will only bolster David’s profile, making it more likely that any team will pursue a deal with Lille.

Former Chelsea midfielder and manager Frank Lampard is reportedly in line to become the manager of the Canadian national team.

Lampard has been unemployed since leaving Chelsea last summer. He was appointed by Todd Boehly as the interim manager in 2023 after the dismissal of Graham Potter but failed to make any significant impact.

In fact, Chelsea experienced a significant dip in form during his tenure, winning only one out of the 11 games he was in charge of.

Frank Lampard shortlisted by the Canadian FA

Despite the recent failed stints at Everton and Chelsea, The Sun reports that the 45-year-old is keen on a return to management, and he could be given an opportunity to do so by the Canadian FA.

He has been shortlisted as the potential new manager following John Herdman’s exit last summer.

However, the report adds that it remains to be seen whether Lampard would be interested in moving abroad. It suggests that he is not in a hurry to return to management, and could be tempted to wait till the end of the season to see if any top-flight jobs become available first.

Lampard is enjoying time away from football as he waits for the right opportunity

In a recent interview, Lampard expressed his enjoyment of spending time with his family during his hiatus from football.

While he indicated a desire to return to management, he emphasized the importance of finding the right opportunity.

He told talkSPORT:

“I’m enjoying being with the family and looking to get back at some point.

“Hopefully something comes up that feels right for me, I’m keen to get working again but as I reiterate, I’m enjoying family life.

“It’s an intense job so when you’re out of it, it’s nice to appreciate being around all my children.

“You love the job. you understand the rigours of it in the modern day. I’ve enjoyed all the clubs I’ve worked with.

“They’ve all been big challenges for different reasons. I enjoy working with players, improve players and the team, so let’s see what comes.”

Morocco are just 45 minutes away from qualifying for the knockout round of the World Cup, for what would be just the second time in their history. However it is set to be a nervous second half, due to their own mistake.

The North-African side were looking comfortable at the time, defending deep and breaking on Canada, giving them a two goal lead. However a ball in from the left was turned past Yassine Bounou by his own defender, Nayef Aguerd. The West Ham man made contact with Sam Adegkube’s cross, but it turned into a neat near-post finish.

As things stand, Morocco are still heading through the group as winners. Unless Croatia can find a winner against Belgium, they will end the group in top spot.

Morocco have been impressive in defence so far, this being just their first goal conceded of the tournament. No doubt the nerves will be audibly jangling should things remain the same until the latter stages.

Morocco are on the verge of making history, as they look favourites to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup for just the second time. They know that a win will qualify them for the next round and they find themselves two goals to the good.

After Hakim Ziyech put them ahead with a glorious chip, a beautiful ball in behind for Youssouf En-Nesyri found the Sevilla striker clear. He finished on the run to send the North-African side into dreamland.

If they can hold onto three points, Morocco will be through to the Round of 16 for the first time in 36 years, last qualifying in 1986. En-Nesyri has also become the first Moroccan player to score in two World Cups.

If Croatia fail to beat Belgium in the other group game, Morocco will go through as group winners. That could mean a tie against any one of Spain, Germany, Japan or Costa Rica, with all four harbouring hopes of going through.
