It looks like it’s going to be quite the summer for Daniel Farke and Leeds United.

This time last year, the German was having to contend with the ambitions of new owners, 49ers Enterprises, alongside those players who didn’t see their immediate future at Elland Road.

That meant that Farke didn’t really have a settled side until mid-September, and yet he still came within a whisker of guiding them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Summerville, Gnonto and Rutter all set to leave Leeds

That he didn’t has already been brought into sharp focus with forced sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur.

With a family history at the club, it would surely been with a heavy heart that the club had to accept that their player would need to be sold.

If that wasn’t bad enough for Leeds fans to digest, it looks like there could be worse to follow.

Leeds United are preparing to lose all three of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Wilfried Gnonto.
Leeds United are preparing to lose all three of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Wilfried Gnonto.

According to Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the trio of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Willy Gnonto are also all likely to follow Gray out of the exit door if acceptable bids are tabled for each of the trio.

Losing just one would be bad enough but if all three jump ship, that would severely weaken the Yorkshire club’s attempts to get promoted at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Such is the fall-out from still being marooned in the English second-tier.

The outlet quote sources as saying the players believe that they have something to offer at the top level, rather than spending another season in the English Championship.

If Farke and his superiors are forced to accept that they’re powerless to keep the players, the best the club can hope for is that they maximise any transfer fee for each, allowing them to strengthen and give Leeds the best chance of promotion on this occasion.

Leeds United are currently navigating treacherous financial waters after the Yorkshire side failed to bounce back up to the Premier League.

The club owes a staggering £190 million in transfer debts accumulated during Andrea Radrizzani’s tenure and have recently reported a £33.7 million loss, despite significant player sales.

This financial strain is compounded by their latest defeat at Wembley in the Championship play-off final against Southampton, marking their third consecutive loss in finals and a sixth unsuccessful play-off campaign.

Daniel Farke’s team were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Championship play-off final, courtesy of Adam Armstrong’s first-half goal. The defeat means Leeds United will spend a second successive season in the Championship, a significant blow given their ambitions to return to the Premier League.

Leeds United will be under serious profit and sustainability pressures

The financial ramifications of missing out on promotion are severe. Leeds fans are now bracing for the likely departure of key talents such as Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto. Chairman Paraag Marathe has acknowledged the possibility of player sales, stating that while the club has the necessary funds, they will need to make sales to comply with profit and sustainability rules.

The likelihood of losing pivotal players is a major concern for Leeds. Summerville and Gnonto are expected to attract significant interest from other clubs, making their retention difficult. Even young talents like Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter are not guaranteed to stay, despite the club’s efforts to hold onto them.

Marathe’s comments to BBC Radio Leeds underline the precarious situation: “We have the funds we need to do what we need, but there will need to be some trade-offs because of [profit and sustainability rules].” The club’s financial obligations and the need to balance the books make it challenging to retain their best players after failing to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

Marathe emphasised the club’s commitment to adhering to profit and sustainability regulations: “There are certain things we need to do and we will make sure we are fully compliant with P and S [profit and sustainability] as we always have been. We’ll have to get back to the drawing board and see what deals we need to do.”

Leeds United played a 0-0 draw in their first leg of their Championship play-off semifinal .

The Whites secured a draw with a clean sheet away from home and now hold the advantage in the tie with the second leg at their home.

The second leg will be played on Thursday to decided who will face West Brom or Southampton in the Championship final.

Daniel Farke’s men have suffered a dip in their form recently but the clean sheet away to Norwich should give them hope of making it to the final.

Farke made changes to his side after putting Archie Gray in midfield in place of Joel Piroe and that worked in the favour of his team.

There is one Leeds player that has received criticism for his disappointing recent performances and it is Georginio Rutter.

Jon Newsome feels that Rutter is struggling at the moment and Joel Piroe, who came on for him in a cameo role for the last 25 minutes, showed more in the match.

Rutter has been out of form since the international break in March when he had surgery on a minor hernia issues.

Georginio Rutter is out of form for Leeds United.

Newsome stated on BBC Radio Leeds that the player could be dropped from the team:

“I hate to say it, but he was really poor today. Nothing stuck. He is that kind of player that really frustrates you, but also has that little sparkle of magic.

“That magic dust has disappeared for the moment and he has been missing for quite a while. Joel Piroe came on, I thought Norwich looked a bit leggy and looked a bit tired, so that gives you an advantage.

“When you have got fresh legs, I think he [Piroe] made more of an impact in the last 20-25 minutes than Rutter had the whole game. Definitely gives Daniel Farke food for Thursday night in his selection.”

In the last nine games, Rutter has not scored or created a goal for the Whites.

Leeds star has struggled for form

His form should be a serious cause of concern for the manager, who is looking to take his team back to the Premier League.

The manager was seen screaming at the player and giving him instructions during the match on Sunday.

Farke has to make the big decision on Thursday now, whether to start Rutter or go with Bamford if he is fit enough to play.

A 4-3 win over Middlesbrough when the pressure was really on has arguably been one of Leeds United’s best results of the season.

Daniel Farke’s side knew that they needed to win at the Riverside Stadium and will almost certainly have to do so in their final two games of the Championship season against Queen’s Park Rangers and Southampton if they’re to stand any chance of going up automatically.

At present, the all whites find themselves in the second automatic promotion spot behind leaders Leicester City.

On 90 points, they’re four behind the Foxes and one ahead of Ipswich Town who, crucially, have a game in hand.

Georginio Rutter has to cut out mistakes says Leeds legend Dorigo

The Portman Road-based team have Hull City, Coventry and Huddersfield to play, and they too are likely to need to win all their matches to give them any chance of going up without needing to go through the lottery of the play-offs.

Each of the teams vying for promotion needs all of their players to be right at it for the remainder of the season, but former Leeds great, Tony Dorigo, hasn’t been impressed by Georginio Rutter of late.

Leeds ace Georginio Rutter has been criticised by Tony Dorigo
Georginio Rutter of Leeds United

“Georgi in these positions, got to do better – got to do better,” he said on commentary for LUTV during the game against Middlesbrough, and when the hosts had taken full advantage of Rutter’s error.

“He’s got away with losing the ball in bad positions before but not this time. Meslier should save that.”

He’s unlikely to be dropped for the remainder of the campaign, but Farke himself might be looking at Rutter’s penchant to be consistently making the same mistake and, at the very least, have a word with him.

The all whites simply can’t afford any more mistakes between now and the final whistle of their match against Southampton.

They’ll still be relying on Kieran McKenna’s side to slip up, but if they’ve not managed to do the business themselves, Leeds will have no one else to blame.

Leeds United recently published their accounts for the 2022/23 season. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire broke down the Whites’ finances.

TalkSPORT presenter Alan Brazil reacted to the financial situation of Leeds United. On April 10, the financial report for the 2022/23 season of the Whites was unveiled, revealing a £33.7 million deficit in the wake of their descent from the Premier League.

Speaking live on TalkSPORT, Brazil claimed: “Well possibly [Leeds could be in trouble], and the reason for that is that, under Jesse Marsch, Leeds spent a fortune on players last season.

“They bought players for £170m and Leeds fans were saying, ‘Well, that’s great, but we thought the owner was looking for a way out, so where’s he getting the money from?’”

“It turns out [former chairman Andrea Radrizzani] has effectively used the Leeds United credit card, so Leeds now owe other clubs £190m in unpaid transfer fees. How are they going to do that in the Championship?!”

Leeds United could be in serious trouble if they don’t get promoted to the Premier League

Looking from the outside in, it seems like it’s promotion or bust for Leeds United this season. They’re in a strong position; currently in third with just a point behind league leaders Leicester City. And there is still plenty of football left to be played.

The Yorkshire club have a few players they may have to sell if promotion is not achieved this season. Crysencio Summerville is a player that is attracting plenty of suitors ahead of the summer.

Additionally, Wilfried Gnonto, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray are three more players that Leeds could sell for large transfer fees in order to balance out their financial situation.

When Leeds played Sunderland on Tuesday night, they had the perfect opportunity to top the table after Leicester had surprisingly lost against Millwall.

However, the all whites fluffed their lines again and, not for the first time in this Championship season, they’ll be thinking about what might’ve been.

Daniel Farke appeared to blame the officials in his post-match press conference, but the truth is that his players just weren’t at the races at times.

That’s a little worrying when you’re in the midst of a promotion race, though there’s no time to dwell on things as the games just keep on coming thick and fast.

Leeds ace Georginio Rutter slammed by Don Goodman on Sky Sports

The players will need to look at themselves after the 0-0 draw and ask themselves the question as to whether they have the stomach for the fight ahead.

It’s one that’ll go right to the final kick of the 2023/24 campaign and, at present, any one of Leicester, Leeds or Ipswich Town could end up in third place and have to go through the drama of the Play Offs.

Don Goodman slammed Leeds United's Georginio Rutter
Leeds United’s Georginio Rutter was poor against Sunderland

If Leeds don’t want to see the lottery of the ‘richest game in the world’ decide their fate, then players such as Georginio Rutter need to step up to the mark.

Though he’s been brilliant for large parts of the season, he was awful against the Black Cats and Sky Sports’ Don Goodman wasted no time in telling the viewers so.

“Sunderland are making it hard for them. But, the choices they’re making, Rutter, I think that’s the poorest I think I’ve ever seen him play in that first-half actually,” he said at half-time in the match (h/t The Boot Room).

“Literally, he did not make a good decision or a good choice all the way through. He’s not on his own.”

With 15 points still to play for, there are bound to be more twists and turns before the whistle sounds to bring the season to a close.

After working so hard to get to this point and be in with a shout, the last thing Leeds need is a mini-collapse right at the business end.

Leeds United have been handed a worrying update regarding Georginio Rutter’s future.

Georginio Rutter, aged 21, has emerged as a top performer for Daniel Farke’s team this season, following a challenging beginning to his Leeds career.

The French player, who arrived from Hoffenheim for a reported club-record fee of £35.5 million in 2023, struggled to score goals as Leeds faced relegation in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Nevertheless, Leeds are gunning to bounce back up to the top-flight but their pursuit of promotion hit a snag with a 2-2 draw against Watford on Good Friday.

Rutter has regained his top form in the Championship, tallying seven goals and 18 assists in 41 matches across all competitions this season.

Leeds United will lose several key players if they fail to get promoted

According to transfer correspondent Peter O’Rourke for Football Insider, Leeds United could see several players leave the club in the summer if the club fail to clinch promotion back to the Premier League.

O’Rourke stated on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “If Leeds do miss out on promotion, there will be interest in Rutter and other top players at the club. The likes of Gnonto and Summerville will also be wanted elsewhere if that is the case.”

Leeds find themselves embroiled in a four-way race for automatic promotion with Ipswich, Leicester, and Southampton as the season’s conclusion looms.

Ipswich Town are currently top of the league on 87 points, with Leeds closely following in second place on 86 points. Leicester City are just a point behind Farke’s men in third, with a game in hand. And Southampton sit on 74 points with two games in hand on the top two.

Like always, the Championship promotion race will come right down to the wire, and Farke will need to achieve the club’s target otherwise the Whites will face a fire sale in the summer.

Chris Dunlavy warns that if Daniel Farke’s team secures promotion from the Championship this season, Leeds United striker Georginio Rutter could face exposure in the Premier League.

Despite sitting third in the Championship, trailing behind Ipswich Town and league leaders Leicester, Leeds drew disappointingly with Huddersfield Town on Saturday, March 2nd.

Rutter has played a crucial role in Farke’s squad at Elland Road, contributing six goals and 11 assists in 34 matches. However, Football League Paper journalist Dunlavy suggests that Rutter’s blend of strength and finesse may not be suited for the Premier League just yet.

“The 21-year-old is a street footballer in the body of a heavyweight boxer, a mixture of bulldozer and ballerina whose first instinct is to forge a direct path to goal.

“It’s high risk, high reward. In the Premier League, those early errors would have been ruthlessly punished, the game long gone. It’s why Rutter barely got a kick last season – and why promotion would be a year too soon.”

Leeds United’s Georginio Rutter prematurely written off

It appears premature to dismiss Rutter’s potential in the Premier League, especially given his impressive performance this season, before Leeds United secure promotion. Despite facing challenges in the Premier League previously, Rutter has flourished in the Championship under Farke’s guidance, showcasing significant growth as a player.

Although he still commits frequent errors and can be unpredictable on the ball, it’s precisely this element of chaos that makes him a formidable threat. Defenders struggle to anticipate his next move when he’s in possession and charging towards the backline.

Whether he smoothly transitions to the Premier League is uncertain, but for now, his primary focus should be on aiding Leeds United in securing their spot in the Championship’s automatic promotion spots.

Graham Smyth has revealed how Georgino Rutter snubbed a potential return to the Bundesliga in favour of helping Leeds United win promotion back to the Premier League.

Speaking on the ‘Inside Elland Road’ podcast recently, Smyth explained how Rutter, 21, who has been in excellent form so far this season, rejected the chance to return to Germany, despite the ‘very good money’ offers coming in for him in the summer.

“You have Rutter, who could not really have been blamed for saying, ‘Actually my four months at Leeds were quite enough thanks you, I’m out of here.’ Yet there was nothing at all. He had options as well,” he said.

“There were Bundesliga clubs who were offering very good money to Leeds for him, and a decision was taken collectively that he would stay at Leeds, and look where we are now.”

Since the start of the season, Rutter, who has five years left on his deal, has directly contributed to eight goals in 27 games in all competitions.
