After opening with an average of Rs 10.26 crore, Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 saw a jump on the second day. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 14.5 crore on Saturday. This brings the two-day nett collection to Rs 24.76 crore. The sequel released alongside Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, which is creating a storm at the box office. However, positive reviews and word of mouth seem to be helping OMG 2.

The Pankaj Tripathi-Yami Gautam drama had an overall 57.91 percent occupancy in the Hindi-speaking market. Night shows contributed most to the numbers, followed by evening, afternoon and morning shows. As per the website, OMG 2 garnered the maximum audience in the north belt along with Maharashtra and Chennai.

Apart from Gadar 2 in the north, OMG 2 also faces tough competition in the South from Rajinikanth’s Jailer and Chiranjeevi’s Bholaa Shankar. Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, also occupies some shows as it enters its third week.

OMG 2, directed by Amit Rai, shows Akshay as the messenger of Lord Shiva, who descends upon Earth to help a devout believer named Kanti Sharan Mudgal. Unlike the Kantilal of the prequel, this character has the utmost faith in God.

In a recent chat with indianexpress.com Pankaj Tripathi revealed how he had rejected the film initially but made time for it, as it’s an important film. He said, “When I heard OMG 2 for the first time, I didn’t have time for three-four months, so I had told them that I don’t have time for the next five months. The person who was lining it up for me then asked me to do a meeting (with the makers) and listen to the story once again and then decide. After the meeting, I told them I don’t have the time and asked them to give me a couple of days to somehow make some time for it. That way, on the third day, I had managed to clear my schedule for 55 days for OMG 2.”

“I realised that it is an important film and I have to do it. It matches my sensibilities. I think till now, mostly, I have been able to choose the right scripts, so I feel mera dimaag sahi kaam kar raha hai,” Tripathi added.

He also addressed the film receiving an A certificate. Sharing that he was taken aback by the CBFC’s decision, the actor said, “As an actor, I always have ‘self-censoring’. I would never want to hurt anyone intentionally. Not even in my dreams I would want my actions, my cinema, my acting to be hurtful towards anyone. I never came here to do that. I came here to do respectable work. But having said that, today people’s sentiments are getting hurt easily and it is difficult to say anything about it. I have not framed the right thoughts about it.”
