Nine Rajya Sabha members retired on Friday out of whom four have been re-elected to the House, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Friday.
Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar from the BJP and three members from the Trinamool Congress — Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Derek O’ Brien and Dola Sen — have been re-elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Five members who retired are Jugalsinh Lokhandwala and Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya of BJP, Sushmita Dev and Shanta Chhetri of TMC and Pradip Bhattacharya of Congress.
“The five retiring members have made rich and significant contributions to the proceedings of the House during the course of their tenure. I am sure they would cherish the unique honour of their association with the House and will continue with their contribution to the nation at large,’’ said Dhankhar.
In his retirement speech, Anavadiya said he was the first member from the Prajapati community in Gujarat to ever be a member of the upper house and thanked the PM.
“…Whenever I have raised an issue with any minister, they have always listened to me and helped me. I had hoped that by the end of the session, the Rajya Sabha would issue a resolution on Manipur, but that did not happen. I have been a teacher of a college for 30 years and have two students who are now working in Manipur, and they ask me why Rajya Sabha has not come out with a resolution,” said Bhattacharya.
BJP’s Lokhandwala said “every issue should not be politicised” and that the PM had spoken for one and a half hours on Thursday in Parliament. Pointing out that she was a member from the North East, TMC’s Sushmita Dev said: “…I want to impress upon the House that we must strive to maintain the delicate peace of the North East.”
