After Norwich City’s 4-0 thumping of Leeds United at Elland Road on Thursday night, manager David Wagner has been fired by the club.

The Championship team has sacked its manager, according to the BBC.

In the second leg of their play-off semi-final, Leeds defeated the Canaries 4-0 at Elland Road, bringing the hosts closer to a return to the Premier League.

Prior to a third consecutive season in the second division, the Norfolk club has decided to part ways with Wagner after he led them to a sixth-place finish and a chance at promotion.

The club is anticipated to make an official statement later on Friday.

After Dean Smith was replaced in January 2023, Wagner assumed leadership but found it difficult to compete in the Championship.

Even though they were ranked 17th in November, Norwich won eight straight games at home to finish sixth and secure the last play-off position.

After leading Huddersfield to the Premier League in 2017, the manager was hired in January 2023 with the intention of repeating the feat at Carrow Road.

Ben Knapper, Norwich’s sporting director, will oversee the hiring procedure now.

Knapper, who formerly managed loans at Arsenal and had a good working relationship with Edu, will also have to handle anticipated bids for important players like Jonathan Rowe and Gabriel Sara, who are both highly regarded by Premier League teams.

Norwich City could appoint Arsenal coach

Wagner joined the Championship club after leaving Huddersfield and spending time with Schalke and Young Boys.

In addition to Steve Cooper and Liam Rosenior, Norwich has been linked to Arsenal coach Carlos Cuesta as they look for Wagner’s successor.

Having spent three years in the Championship, Norwich have to make some tough decisions now if they are to get promoted to the Premier League.

Norwich City defender Shane Duffy has found himself in hot water just days before the club’s crucial promotion playoff match after being arrested and charged for drink driving.

According to BBC, the incident occurred on Monday night when Duffy was involved in a two-vehicle collision on Queen’s Road, Hethersett.

Following the crash, the Irish defender was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and subsequently taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported as a result of the collision, but the legal ramifications for Duffy are significant. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 2nd to face the charges brought against him.

Norwich City says club are internally considering the matter

In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Norwich City Football Club issued a statement, acknowledging the situation and stating that the club is handling the matter internally in accordance with its disciplinary procedures.

The spokesperson said (via BBC):

“Norwich City Football Club is aware of an incident involving one of its first-team players.

“The club is in the process of considering the matter internally in accordance with its own disciplinary procedure.”

Reportedly, Brentford have emerged as the first Premier League club to express interest in Josh Sargent, as they make arrangements to sell Ivan Toney this summer.

Brentford are fully aware that England forward Ivan Toney is poised to make a move during the upcoming summer transfer window. Having demonstrated his capabilities at the highest level, the 27-year-old has been linked with prestigious clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea.

Toney’s departure is expected to generate a substantial fee, yet Brentford aren’t inclined to make extravagant expenditures on a replacement. Instead, according to Alan Nixon’s report on Patreon, they aim to secure value for money when seeking cover for Toney. Sargent is viewed as fitting that criteria.

For the past few seasons, Mikel Arteta has been working hard to transform Arsenal into a footballing side in his own image.

It would be hard to argue that he hasn’t done exactly that, given that the Gunners are now a hard-working disciplined group.

With 14 games left to play in the current season, the North Londoners are very much in the title race too.

At present, they are sat third in the English top-flight, level on points with Man City (who have a game in hand) and just two away from table-toppers, Liverpool.

The match against Man City on March 31 is already looking to be one of the most important that Arteta’s side have left, and their success in any of their future matches will arguably be as much down to his No.2 Carlos Cuesta as Arteta himself.

Liverpool are through to the fifth-round of the FA Cup after beating Championship side Norwich 5-2 at Anfield. 

Goals from Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez, with a Ben Gibson strike in between, gave the Reds a 2-1 lead going into the halftime break.

Diogo Jota would make that 3-1 early in the second half before Virgil van Dijk produced a wonderful header from a corner to make it 4-1 to Liverpool as Borja Sainz pulled one back with a stunning strike.

The game would finish 5-2 with a goal from Ryan Gravenberch capping off a brilliant performance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, the assist from Conor Bradley made it, which was the highlight of an exceptional performance from the young right-back.

Diogo Jota has now scored a third for the Premier League club, smashing the ball into the Norwich net in the 53rd minute of the match.
