A speeding truck rammed into two-wheelers and pedestrians near a suspected defective signal in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpattu on Friday, killing four including two students.
Police said the sand-laden lorry heading from Chengalpattu to Tambaram on the Chennai-Trichy highway crashed around 9:45 am near Potheri signal.
The deceased were two private college students, a 32-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old violin teacher. Injured were admitted to a government hospital.
Locals alleged the dysfunctional signal, lack of barricades and traffic police allow vehicles to speed, endangering motorists and pedestrians. Traffic was halted temporarily as people blocked the road. Bodies were sent for autopsy.
Police registered a case and arrested the truck driver. CM Stalin expressed condolences, announcing Rs 2 lakh compensation to victim families and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
