After getting a thunderous opening of Rs 40.10 crore at the box office on its opening day, Sunny Deol starrer Gadar 2 has maintained its stronghold at the box office as the film earned a massive Rs 43 crore nett at the box office on its second day, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. This takes the film’s nett domestic collection to Rs 83.10 crore which is humungous for a Hindi film. In 2023, not many films have been able to achieve this kind of numbers during their opening weekend.
Bollywood Hungama predicted that the film could earn Rs 175 crore in just five days, and will soon enter the Rs 300 crore club. The three-day opening weekend could be in the range of Rs 125 crore, as per the publication. The film has already become the highest grosser for its lead actor Sunny Deol, who has been a part of the industry since the 1980s.
In 2023, the only film that enjoyed a bigger opening than Gadar 2 was Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathaan, which earned Rs 57 crore on its opening day. Gadar 2 released against Pankaj Tripathi and Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2, which only earned Rs 10.26 crore on its opening day. However, with good reviews and strong word of mouth, OMG 2 could prove to be a competitor for Gadar 2 in the coming days.
Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 also stars Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma and is the sequel to the 2001 hit. The film is set during the 1970s and follows Sunny’s Tara Singh to Pakistan as he tries to rescue his son from the Pakistani army.
The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave the film 1.5 stars and wrote that the “Sunny Deol film offers nothing new.” The review further read, “Gadar 2 is exactly in the same mould as the original, with the high-on-patriotism Tara Singh going on a rampage in Pakistan again, this time to rescue his strapping son (Sharma) from the clutches of the cruel Major General Hamid Iqbal (Wadhwa).”
