An overwhelmed father, an emotional mother and a son embarking on his landmark professional life. Actor Abhishek Bachchan has shared what it was like for him to watch his screen debut Refugee with his family, megastar father Amitabh Bachchan and actor mother Jaya Bachchan.

Directed by JP Dutta, Refugee was released in 2000 and marked the debut of Abhishek and actor Kareena Kapoor. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Abhishek opened up about the night of the screening– the first time he saw Refugee with the cast before the grand premiere.

“JP sahab showed us Refugee the night before the premiere, that was the first time I saw myself on screen. He had a special screening for Bebo and me and our families and the rest of the cast, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty. My mother, of course, was an emotional wreck, but my father was very, very quiet. I think he kind of knew what he was in for after that, just like, ‘Oh God, my son!’ He is not someone who displays his emotions very easily, but my mother was very emotional,” he said.

The drama featured Abhishek playing a character who helps illegal refugees from India and Pakistan to cross the border. Though Refugee was just an average grosser at the box office, it did help establish Abhishek as a performer to watch out for.

In a recent interview with indianexpress.com, Abhishek opened up about father Amitabh Bachchan being his greatest cheerleader and said it has taken the megastar a lot of “courage” to show his love on social media.

“It is wonderful, but times you feel it’s a bit excessive, it’s embarrassing, and I told him that once, ‘Hey, can you just back of a bit? Take your foot off the accelerator!’ But we forget, he is also a father. I am a father today and I know the raw emotion that comes with a child. You can’t blame him. He has finally mustered up the courage to be public about it. He never used to before.  He was very shy, almost very scared of expressing his opinions and emotions about it,” he said.

On the work front, Abhishek will be next seen in R Balki’s sports drama Ghoomer, co-starring Saiyami Kher. The film is scheduled to release on August 18. Meanwhile, Jaya Bachchan is currently seen in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar.
