Educating children in their mother tongue plays an important role in nation-building, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday while addressing the sixth convocation event at the Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

“It is the moral responsibility of all of us to protect and promote our languages. Therefore, every citizen should take a decision to teach their children in their mother tongue. The perceptive, reasoning, and decision-making power of children who study in their mother tongue become extremely strong, which plays an important role in nation-building. If our resolve to teach our children in the mother tongue is realised, then no one can stop the country from progressing,” Shah said.

He further added that education in the mother tongue is the major focus of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Taking special note of the fact that Sanskrit is taught as a compulsory subject in the IITE curriculum, Shah told teachers the language is “a treasure of knowledge and that is why its study is very necessary”. “The country is indepndent and in safe hands. So there is no need to die for the country but dedicate our lives to the country and be determined to live for the country with the spirit of doing something. The celebration of ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ will be completed on August 15 and from thereon ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Kaal’ will begin, which will last till the year 2047. In this period, incredible development will take place in all directions in the country including economy, technology, education, health, infrastructure, defence, research, and other sectors,” he added.

Appealing to students to take a small resolution that would prove to be big for the country, Shah said every citizen should take “small resolutions”. “I will not waste any food. I will not evade taxes. I will start saving electricity. I will follow the traffic rules from today – he urged them to take such small but important resolutions.
