Sharing a couple of videos of strength training including exercises like a weighted reverse lunge and lateral lunge with plate press, and a mirror selfie, Kohli wrote, “Look for excuses or look to get better”.

The weighted reverse lunge to knee drive, that Kohli can be seen doing, primarily works on quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors, said Varun Rattan, co-founder of The Body Science Academy. “This exercise can improve the running stride. The knee drive requires you to stabilise your body on one leg. This can translate into better balance and coordination,” said Rattan.

The lateral lunge with plate press engages almost all major muscles of the body, primarily the glutes, legs, core, and shoulders, informed Rattan. “This exercise also helps improve stability and lateral movement. Lunging sideways trains your body to move side to side, which is required in most sports. It improves functional fitness, making everyday movements easier,” he said.

This is not the first time that Kohli can be seen lifting weights in the gym.

Previously, Kohli shared a video, captured by teammate Surya Kumar Yadav, of himself lifting weights in the gym. “Mobility is key,” he captioned it.

In the video, he can be seen doing snatch push presses and overhead squats.

Here’s why you should do strength training

“Lifting heavy weights makes the body more insulin sensitive (means that the body is better able to utilise sugars and carbohydrates for fuel),” said fitness trainer Shwetambari Shetty in an earlier interaction, stressing that weightlifting is also the best way to boost testosterone.

She added that weightlifting also helps boost the body’s metabolism. “Lifting causes an increase in the body’s resting metabolic rate — the rate at which it burns calories when you’re doing nothing — for hours after the workout which helps better fat burn,” Shetty shared.
