Amid the city receiving light and weak monsoon showers since this month, the India Meteorological Department has said that monsoon is slated to pick up pace starting August 18. Mumbai and its neighbouring districts, however, are slated to experience light rains throughout next week.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, said that the next period of monsoon surge is expected after August 18.

Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD Mumbai said, “While there is no weather system currently, we are expecting favourable monsoon conditions and stronger westerlies starting next weekend. For now, the month of August has received only light showers and will continue to receive less intense rains in the next week.”

On the ongoing moderate spells, IMD officials said that Mumbai is currently experiencing ‘break monsoon conditions’ owing to the shift of the monsoon trough to the Himalayas.

Furthermore, according to meteorologists, besides isolated spells of heavy showers, the upcoming week will continue to receive light rain as no weather systems, which would normally bring a monsoon surge over the west coast, are developing over either the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea.

In its bulletin forecast for the next five days (until August 16), the weather bureau has issued no alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Raigad, Thane and Palghar, stating the likelihood of light to moderate showers in the districts.
